Rylynn was struggling to get to her feet as the Quiver Back veered off out of range, her legs shaking weakly under the weight of her body. However, the chaos that stormed around her only seemed to last for a moment longer after Ghost called to Sev, the tumbling of trees echoing in the brood's ears before they all seemed to fall into a large pile with a heavy thud. Silence overwhelmed the thick, ashy air, the only sound the mare could identify was the sound of everyone's uneven breathing, and the gentle rippling of water. With a final heave, the mare found her footing eventually, and stood up to find the Quiver Back crushed beneath the dead trees, clumps of bloody, black fur hooked on broken branches.
"Do you... Do you think it's dead?" She heard Sev murmur, casting a glance at the now ash covered stallion. Slowly, the mare looked around, staring at the silenced and injured horses around her. Everyone seemed to be as shocked as they were relieved that they had rid themselves of the might beast. At Maori's voice, Rylynn suddenly blinked and glanced over at Cholena, suddenly realizing how much the pony mare had really taken. She was covered in large claw marks and blood, but then again, so was Ghost and herself. They had all taken a good beating, and would now bear the scars from the damned creature that threatened their lives.
With weak knees, the brood collapsed down into the river, dropping to her side with a relieved huff. Silently, she lay in the bloody river, letting her wounds and worries drain away with the gentle current that tugged her mane. Her sides heaved and her breathing hardened, the pain of her wounds now searing and shooting through her body like sharp bolts of electricity, and with a loud grunt Rylynn sat back up and winced. "I never realized how much I hate Quiver Backs until today." The brood murmured lowly, giving a quiet chuckle to herself.

[Ghost//Bachelor Elite//Stallion]
Ghost watched as the logs tumbled down, violently assaulting the massive creature. It was over. He let out a sigh of relief as he looked around at the rest of the bloody and battered party. They had done well, better than the stallion had initially expected, but there had still been a price to pay.
"Thank you." The pony mare's voice sounded rather weak as she spoke. Ghost turned to glance at her. "You did well, Cholena." He nodded slightly as he spoke. "Just don't do anything that stupid again. You have a daughter who needs you.." He glanced at Dawne who was standing by Maori's side, briefly thinking of his own young daughter. Hopefully Felicity was safe, and being obedient to the older horses...not pulling something like Vashti had. He shot a glare at the golden mare before returning his attention to Cholena as she collapsed in the water a few feet away.
"Where's my mom now?"
The silver stallion looked down to see Dawne had appeared at his side. "She's right over here, child." He said softly, nudging her along with his large velvety nose. "You must be gentle with her though, She's been injured and needs to rest." He glanced at where Cholena lay in the river, concern for the mare washing over him. He was about to call for help when Maori trotted over to where he stood. ''Ghost." The mare's voice was determined as she spoke. "We have to get her up and out of the river. If she stays here, her wounds will keep on bleeding because the water won't let them close up. And when she keeps on bleeding...'' "I understand." The spotted stallion nodded, watching as Cholena tried to stand, only to fall back into the water, her legs too weak to support her weight.
"Hang on, I've got you..." Ghost murmured softly, wedging his head gently under the mare's limp body, shifting her so she was resting across his neck. The feat was nothing new for the stallion, as Felicity had asked for many a ride in a similar fashion. Slowly, he walked over to the river's edge, carefully lowering her to the dry, sandy bank. "I'll leave the rest to you, Maori." He said matter of factly, knowing the younger mare had more experience caring for the injured than he did. "Dawne, stay with Maori and your mother...but if you need anything, you can call for me." He spoke softly, grabbing the filly's ribbon as he led her to the Exile mares.
"Well, now what do we do? Most of us took a pretty good beating from... that.. that thing." Ghost turned to look at Sev as the other stallion finished speaking, his thoughts lingering on his own injuries momentarily. "Aye, we did... But there is still much to be done." Ghost said rather softly, pushing away the pain that shot through his being, as he looked around at the rubble. "You'll need to move the quiver back out of the river, the last thing you need is a rotting corpse contaminating one of your water sources..." He glanced at the dead creature as he spoke. " A few good shoves and we should be able to get it to the shore... After that, we Bachelors will need to be heading home..." He glanced around briefly, looking for the Exile leader, but his attention was grabbed by the sound of splashing as Rylynn tried to stand.
"Eila,"Ghost called to the older brood "I need you to tend to Rylynn's wounds...We will have a fairly long trek home ahead of us..." The concern in the elite's voice was evident as he spoke. It would take them at least an hour to get back to their Island and another two to reach the Summer Fields. He needed all of them to be able to make it home in one piece. Glancing at the filly who stood near them, he called to her separately. "Vashti, get over here and help Sev and I move this carcass." His voice was stern as he spoke, his irritation for the youngling still fresh in his mind. He had a few choice words set aside for the filly that he'd be sure to share on their journey home

Eila | Slave brood
------------------
Eila hadn't spared Rylynn more than a glance, unwilling to further divide her already stretched attention between the beast and Vashti. But she felt a surge of hope and, oddly, fierce pride? that her fellow brood was joining with her, as the two fought to keep the quiverback away from the prone Vashti. When Rylynn successfully sent Vashti away, Eila felt a moment's reprieve from horror, and instead reeled as a wave of shock moved through her. Vashti had listened?
Then Rylynn went down. For a split second, Eila froze, certain the quiverback would turn and fall on to the bleeding, vulnerable mare. And she knew in her heart she wouldn't be able to stop it.
"NOT ON MY WATCH!" Never in her life had Eila felt so grateful for a Bachelor stallion to be taking her problems in to his own hooves, as the elite pounded towards her, catching the attention of the enraged quiverback and, blessedly, driving it away from them.
Standing protectively next to Rylynn, Eila started to turn to look for Vashti, not at all confident the filly would remain out of trouble. However, events were quickly snowballing and before Eila had even contemplated the thought, her eyes had instead cut to the river. In all of the dust, shouting and general chaos, the fjord unmistakably heard the words "push those trees now!" and with an intake of breath, she watched, every nerve stretched taut, as the trees went crashing and rolling in to the river. She couldn't see what had happened past that, and dread curdled in her gut. Sharp yellow eyes scanned the body language of the horses on the bank, and as they suddenly relaxed and drooped, Eila knew it was over. She let out a shaking snort.
Turning finally to verify Vashti's safety, Eila heard Rylynn ponderously make her way to the river. Good, she wasn't deathly wounded, it would seem. She trailed after the grulla none the less, worry nagging at her. She didn't think about how she'd blown her shining chance at escape; she couldn't afford to right now. There would be plenty of time on the plodding journey home, which would undoubtedly take longer with so many of their group injured.
Flicking an ear at Ghost's command, Eila hesitated, then bobbed her head in acceptance, although she was eyeing the wounded brood dubiously. Stubbornly, Eila had refused to study healing and herbal knowledge, feeling it to be an acceptance of her role in the herd. But now, she wished she had.
"You should perhaps get out of the water now," Eila suggested tentatively to Rylynn, flicking her tail anxiously. "I'm afraid the wounds will continue to bleed, if you stay in the water. Do you need help getting out?" She hesitated, then turned and called, "Vashti, come here and help me." A sudden thought flared through her; what if Vashti had herself sustained an injury? She'd scampered off agile enough, but that didn't mean she wasn't wounded... "Vashti!" Eila called again, anxiety sharpening her voice.
"We'll help you," Eila said to Rylynn, turning back to the mare. "We'll help you."
For they were broods, and broods stuck together. They had to.

Rylynn watched in silence as the once chaotic band of horses slowly departed back into the groups they had came in, Maori had escorted the small filly Dawne across the river while Ghost tenderly helped Cholena get across as well, her wounds severe and in need of treatment. Once setting the pony mare down, he returned to the opposite bank to gather Sev and Vashti to dispose of the Quiver Back carcass. For the time being, the grullo brood simply lay in the water, feeling dizzy and weak from her wounds before letting her ears perk at the mentioning of her name by Ghost. "Eila," Ghost had called to the older brood "I need you to tend to Rylynn's wounds...We will have a fairly long trek home ahead of us..."
The sound of hooves quickly followed, and when they stopped Rylynn craned her neck to face the other brood with a somewhat relieved expression. "You should perhaps get out of the water now," Eila had suggested to her. "I'm afraid the wounds will continue to bleed, if you stay in the water. Do you need help getting out?" Giving a little shake to her head, Rylynn extended a folded leg and began to heave herself up, "No, no, I'm okay." She murmured, biting her lip slightly at her final attempt to push herself up with her injured leg. "Vashti, come here and help me!" The grullo heard Eila call, but although it took a moment, she had eventually gotten up. "Thank you for the concern." Rylynn smiled, wincing as she extended her neck to give a thankful touch to the Fjord's shoulder with her pink nose.
"We'll help you," Eila said promisingly, "We'll help you." The young mare had never realized how loyal and close her fellow broods were, how devoted they were to sticking with one another through thick and thin. After all, most broods had a hard life living among the Bachelors, and it was a good feeling to know that they were in it together.
"Thank you, Eila. You're a kind a mare. I hope we can get to no one another in time." Rylynn smiled before glancing toward Ghost, knowing their time on the Southern Isle had come to an end. Hesitantly, the brood put weight on her injured leg, testing her patience and eventually managing to walk in the direction of the Elite. Though they hadn't gotten much accomplished in restoring the land, hopefully what they did manage would begin new life on the barren island. With a sigh, Rylynn let her eyes close for a moment, enjoying the peaceful state that had come to her. In her mind, the trip here had been a success, they had helped rid the Exiles of dead trees and had defeated a Quiver Back. Though the day was almost over, things were just beginning.

Cholena | Exiles | Scout
"Hang on, I've got you..."
Suddenly, the mare felt herself lifted, the feeling overwhelmingly nostalgic from her foal-hood. She allowed herself to be carried, feeling the large draft's shoulders sway under her belly as he escorted her to the bank. She could hear Maori and Dawne trotting behind him, listening to her daughter's concern. The sound of her filly's voice made her heart swell, the pony sighing as Ghost slowly slid her body to the sandy, ashy shore of the river. She heard Ghost lead Dawne closer to her and the medic, blue eyes opening as she stared up at the stallion she had grown to hate, but slowly, she had a change of heart. For as long as she was a brood, she hated him, but now that their worlds diverged, she saw him as he was; and what Ghost was, was a horse, one much like her, full of the need to care for and protect those who need it.
"Thank you," the mare whinnied softly, knowing that once the Bachelors left the island, this fragile truce would disintegrate like the land on this island, but she didn't mind showing her appreciation. She smiled, nudging her now close daughter under her chin, "Mama's here, baby, mama's here..."
The chimera felt tears prick her eyes and she pulled her gray filly to her side, her anxious and frightened cries that had been held in escaping her lungs. She had been so scared to lose another foal, she hadn't allowed herself to feel the fear until much later. Neck craned over the filly that lay beside her, the mother allowed the hiccuping sobs escape her, pulling away to kiss over her dirty and muddy filly's face, "Thank the unicorns, you're okay. Mama was so scared, I was so scared to lose you, Dawne."
Blood and dirt covered the small family, the two mares missing one very important piece of them, but only for now. Soon they would be reunited, and she had no doubt that Kanu would fret over her; it would be a long while before that overprotective fiancé of hers let her out of his sight, but after a day like this, she never wanted to leave his side. She sighed softly, tears finally ceasing their descent from her blue eyes, the mare nuzzling her daughter as she turned to Maori, smiling at the mare with brightness like the sun behind the ashen clouds.
"Thank you, Maori," she said gratefully, Lena seeming to relax for the first time since 'Quiver Back' had been screamed, "I'll be fine for now, please go see how Sev and Khala are doing, I promise you I won't move until you give me the okay."
The mare looked over her daughter's head, watching as the two stallions and a few of the others started moving the beast's body from the river, moving the fallen trees as well. She watched as the broods aided each other, and her heart felt a small pang; they were lucky to have each other close, it was something that she did not have while in the Bachelor herd, and she felt slightly better about them returning, together. A small frown crossed her face though, knowing that the three broods she called sisters would soon leave her eyes and most likely never seen again...and for a moment, Lena felt saddened at their inevitable departure.
Slowly, she adverted her eyes from the busy horses around her, turning to Dawne with another small smile, a huff in her nose, "Did I tell you that mama and papa met here.?" The mare started, playfully pulling at her filly's short, curly mane, "Mama was young and silly, and she had been attacked by grass beasts, but papa came to save her, and....."
Lena continued to tell her the story of how they met, using vivid descriptions to distract her daughter from the work around them. They were finally home.

MAORI | EXILE | MEDIC
She had been worried about how they'd get Cholena out of the river, but when Ghost nodded understandable and set his powerful, muscled body into movement, he lifted her with ease. She was in awe for a moment, seen how easily he could lift the pony mare. She always forgot how powerful those huge stallions were and it surprised her every time she saw them get use of that strength.
She let go of a sigh of relieve when Cholena was put down the ashy shore carefully and started nudging her blind, but wound-free filly. She smiled, feeling her heart swell again. On one hand so happy that there had nothing happened to the foal and that Cholena's brave encounter with the Quiver Back hadn't been for nothing. But on another hand she felt the pain of having to miss her filly she had once lost. She had lost count, but it had at least been three winters ago. And still the pain wouldn't leave, the wound on her heart wouldn't heal.
"Thank you, Maori. I'll be fine for now, please go see how Sev and Khala are doing, I promise you I won't move until you give me the okay."
The pony mares voice pulled her back to reality and she looked down to her and her filly, returning the smile to her. She was relieved to see the life had returned in the mares eyes, shining even brighter than they'd done when the Quiver Back hadn't yet come to their attention.
She nodded to her words. ''I'll come back to you as soon as I've made sure the others are atleast a bit okay,'' she promised her with her one eye filled with determination. Now that the Quiver Back had been killed, she would be able to heal those that were wounded. It would be a little more tricky than healing would be on the Southern Isle, since she'd really had to search for herbs over here, only hoping she could fine a few. But she would do so without a doubt. They were her fellow herd members, her family, and she would tend to them, even if she'd had to search days for the herbs and plants she needed.
After taking a last look at Cholena and her filly, finally reunited. She could leave them here with a good heart now, knowingly they would be fine for now. She tilled her head up, turned around and carefully made her way back into the river, to hurry up to a trot as soon as she reached the river's grounds. As she trotted towards Ghost and Sev, she saw them looking over to the carcass. It was only than she realized the death body of the beast would pollute their waters. If they'd left it there, they wouldn't be able to use this as a watering ground in the future, when they would retake their home. Luckily Ghost again offered his help and together with Sev tended to remove the carcass from the water.
She trotted to where they were just standing, and waited there. She knew Ghost and the broodmares would leave after this, and she wanted to take a look at Sev when he was done pushing the carcass out of the water. She let go of a sigh of relieve, a sigh she didn't knew she had been holding. They'd outlived the beast. He had been killed and safety had, for now, returned withint the small group of horses. It had made her anxious of her previous home, though. He could they return living here, while beasts like that lived out here? She'd hoped that, with the dying of all the green and the departure of the Exiles from the Southern Isle, the beasts had died or at least left their land. She knew there were still Periditm Mooses living out here, but they could live next to those predators, even though they'd look out for them. But beasts like the one they'd just killed... That weren't beasts you could live next to.
She again sighed, but than lifted her head again and turned her ears around. She started looking for Khala, seeing that she was the last she hadn't seen the wounds of. Their leader had charged the beast together with Ghost and she couldn't be more proud of her for that. She had stood up for her herd and protected them like a good leader would. Worry filled her head as she realized the chimera mare had to be hurt after charging the beast, and now that she couldn't find her while she scanned the area, she was worried something might have happened to her.

Voices, relieved and tired now, were filling Dawne's ears and though slightly concerning should it have been heard on a regular basis, considering they'd been attacked this was a good change. The filly smiled finally after so much chaos as Ghost led her gently to her mother, who had been moved to the river bank. The filly twitched her ears at Lena's sing-song voice as it carried over the wind, so nice for someone so hurt.
"Mama's here, baby, mama's here..." "I know Mama, I know!"
The filly buckled her knees and buried herself in her mother's mane, her small back legs sitting in the water and her mane dripping from having played in it so much. She nuzzled the chimera and licked gently at her mother's coat to clean off the dirt.
"Did I tell you that mama and papa met here.?" Lena began to pull at Dawne's mane, tugging it different ways quite goofily but gently. "Mama was young and silly, and she had been attacked by grass beasts, but papa came to save her, and....." Dawne was enraptured with the story of her mother and father's meeting and quickly relaxed, resting her head against Lena's leg and chest, yes everything would be fine. The Exiles would go home finally, to the home Lena and Kanu so often told her about. To the home she knew she would love. With that the filly finally got called into the lull of sleep, the day had been exhausting and they were finally done.

When she knew Ghost wasn't looking in her direction, she stuck her tongue out at the Elite and muttered a few choice words about him. Dawne had gone back to her mother, cuddling with her mother at the river bank. Vashti surveyed the others for a few minutes. She spotted Eila helping the injured Rylynn stand. The brood had acquired a few cuts from going after the Quiverback. Vashti made her own over to them."Eilllllaaaa," the youngling whined in her usual bratty voice, nudging at the brood's flank. "I want to go home, are we going home?" They certainly wouldn't be getting home quickly with the majority of them wounded and tired, but she would whine and complain nonetheless. Then Ghost called over for her to come help him and one of the Exiles move the carcass of the Quiverback. She huffed and stomped over to him, giving him a look. "Okay, your highness," she replied, moving to help push the body. It was heavy, much heavier than she expected. How was she going to be of any help moving it? Becoming flippant, the youngling complained and whined about the 'hard' work she was doing. If the others didn't have a headache already, they certainly would have one now from all her chatter.
