Eila | Slave brood -----------------
As Lena joined her and spoke to the younglings, Eila took the opportunity to duck her neck and rub her face along an outstretched foreleg, attempting to stem her still-watering eyes. All this ash was more challenging to deal with than she'd anticipated- it definitely wasn't the ideal terrain for an escape attempt. Or, she thought as she lifted her head and cast a quick look over the working groups, for new growth. Would this land ever be sustainable again? Depressing thoughts, and Eila snorted quietly, trying to keep her mind on task. Golden eyes lit on Lena and Dawne, as the mother blew a gentle breath on her filly before scrambling back up the bank, and Eila felt her gaze soften slightly, at what was surely a common interaction between the two. But no less precious for it.
Nodding at Lena's words, Eila cast another look down at the splashing fillies before she shook her head and followed her partner. Moving in next to her, Eila fit her shoulder in to the space left under Lena's hooves and began to shove, bracing her thick neck. Lena had already weakened the tree and with Eila's added strength, the tree quickly let loose a final crack and ripped from the earth in a plume of ash and dust. As the dead roots were upturned, they dragged across Eila's legs, leaving long sooty streaks in her red coat, but the mare was too busy sneezing to care.
"Excuse me," she finally managed to Lena, shaking her forelock free from her eyes. "Must have some ash in my nose..."
The mare trailed off; her attention had been captured by the massive grey form of Ghost. He was moving, and thus Eila's attention zeroed in on him, leaving little room for other concerns. He wasn't moving towards her group, but Rylynn, and with a neutral, calm demeanor. Eila felt a moment of relaxation, and had started to turn away when her ear flicked to catch a new voice-
"Can we help you?"
Whipping her head around, the fjord looked at the small brown mare who had spoken in such a hostile voice. Yellow eyes darted from the mare to Ghost and back again.
From many of the bachelor stallions, such words from a mare would be more than enough to incite violence. Ghost wasn't generally one of those stallions, but as Eila continued to watch the scene unfold, a blanket of tension seemed to settle over her form, as muscles bunched, ready for action. Unconsciously, the mare swung her hips so that she and Lena were in between the rest of the group and the younglings in the river.

Dawne had instantly ceased to splash at Vashti's grunts of discomfort and then at Eila and Lena's voice.
"Oh, but mommy, I would never go too deep!" The foal cried exasperatedly. Then there was the satisfied huff on Dawne's nose and the filly promptly began to dart for the shore.
"Okay Vashti. What do I do?" The filly had thought it would be an easy task to patch up the bank, but she couldn't see where it needed patching. So, she happily picked up a bundle of sticks and mumbled past the brown burdens.
"Okay, so where do I need to put the sticks, you can tell me and lead me to 'em." The filly's voice sounded like a cacophony of odd sounds since she was holding the sticks, but hopefully the meaning was clear. She began to delicately pick her way along, finally slowing down and allowing Vashti to be the leader of their "dangerous" mission to stop the banks from crumbling in. The sharp voices of the mares in the charred woodland above the foals in the bank had reached the filly's ears, but the young foal payed no mind. The filly began to mumble from behind the sticks,
"Did ya know that I got my gift? Ba'Yagu said that I may see the future one day."

At the calling of her name, the grullo brood craned her neck around to let her eyes rest upon Ghost. Her ears flickered a bit before she gave her response, "Coming." She replied calmly, giving a little shake to her ashy shoulders before trotting over to the large stallion. His words were the truth, the more they helped one another, the faster they could be finished and get to go home. Rylynn didn't mind helping, but it was the fact that the ashy air made her eyes water and throat tickle, and that even with the help of the Bachelors, the Southern Isle would still remain just as run down.
"Can we help you?" A voice rung in her ears as she followed beside the stopped grey stallion, her attention now turning towards the Exile mare that spoke. Rylynn suddenly gave a loud, and rather irritated snort. How could they show such disrespect?! They had come all this way to help restore the Exiles land and this is the thanks they get? Hostility?
The brood gave a harsh flick of her tail, working up a large breath to speak before cutting herself off. The mare would've loved to tell the inconsiderate mare whats what, but Rylynn held her tongue, knowing that her ill-temper wasn't going to help in the situation. She only hoped that Ghost would put an end to it.
"Exiles..." She simply muttered under her breath, giving a little roll to her eyes.

Sevastyan beamed at the little brown mare. Geez, he hadn't actually enjoyed talking to someone in a long time. It was funny, she almost looked.... surprised when he had told her the truth. For some lying comes to mind, but as for Sev, it really never does. He just doesn't even think to lie. Her face morphed into a knowing look, and he watched as she nodded.
''I understand... I think we all died a little on the inside, that day. But I believe most of us get out of it stronger, eventually,'' She said.
He nodded in agreement. Suddenly, he noticed her whirl around instead of saying another thing. He was already facing them, but hadn't noticed until she had. Bachelors. He was still very distrustful of the brutes, but he still remained in a good manner towards them. No point in making his life more full of discord than it already was.
Moari snapped at them, "Can we help you?"
He winced visibly and stared wide-eyed at the feisty thing who had just been talking sweetly at him two seconds before. He made an apologetic grin and flattened his ears back submissively to the visitors. His next words he filled with an apologetic tone.
" Uhh... Hi?" Sev ventured awkwardly. " I uhh... am Sev and this is Maori. Sorry... What is your names?"
He hoped nobody would fight near him.

[Ghost//Bachelor Elite//Stallion]
"Can we help you?"
Ghost inhaled sharply, biting the inside of his cheek. 'Don't respond negatively...it's not worth it. Stick to the mission.' He thought, slowing to a stop in front of the aggressive mare as she spoke. He flicked an ear back as Rylynn muttered under her breath. Thankfully she had followed with no incident, and he was glad for it. Being accompanied by a brood would hopefully make him appear less threatening. Exhaling slowly, he began to speak.
"Yes. You can actually." He said rather curtly, trying to maintain his neutral demeanor. "There is much work to be done, as I am sure you are painfully aware. If we all work together, I believe we'll be able to get much more done in the time that we are here. I propose two of us knock the trees from the ground, and the other two roll them over to the bank so we can start building that blockade Khala spoke of. I know my energy is wasted on pushing already felled trees when I am of more use knocking them over." He paused, watching the mare for her reaction, when the dark stallion beside her finally spoke up.
" Uhh... Hi?... I uhh... am Sev and this is Maori. Sorry... What is your names?"
"I am Ghost, Bachelor elite, and this-" He motioned toward the lady brood beside him."Is Rylynn. We are not here to cause trouble. I am merely making a suggestion that could save all of us some time and energy." He emphasized each of the words he spoke, trying to ensure that they understood it was their choice. The last thing he needed was for either of them to try an pick a fight with him, especially with Khala standing not too far away. Not that he couldn't handle himself in a fight, he just had no desire to stray from the mission he was given. A mission that he intended to complete without issue.
"So what do you two say?"

MAORI | EXILE | MEDIC
Just as she had said it, she bit her tongue. She didn't ment to be so hostile, almost so aggressive. She exhaled slowly, silently, while she saw the huge, strong stallion came to a stop in front of her and Sevastyan. It was that second that all her confidence slit through a drain. She didn't ment to start a fight, especially since he didn't came calling them around. He didn't do anything yet, so she calmed herself and awaited his reply - still very on guard because of her previous outburst. She could expect anything from him - from catching her by her throat to yelling to her for being a mare and snapping at him. She held her breath, just hoping she didn't just screw things over completely. She and her impulsive, not-thinking behavior. She could slap herself for that.
Luckily the spotted stallion stood there for a few seconds, probably cursing her from the inside of his head, but when he opened his mouth and spoke to her and Sev, he was still as neutral as his body language showed them. She could finally breath again. She slowly turned one of her ears out of her neck, shortly forward, but than sideward again. She almost couldn't believe that a Bachelor stallion could be so willing to help them. But after his words she decided to just go with it and partly trust him for now.
Her face softened a bit when Sev's words reached her ears, how he tried to safe her snapping at the Elite stallion by welcoming him and asking what his name was. She looked over her shoulder shortly, throwing a very thankful smile at him, before looking back to Ghost who stood in front of them, and the mare that had appeared behind him. She loosened up a little. Sev made her feel like she wasn't alone in this and out of all honesty, if the spotted stallion hadn't been a brute Bachelor, she would've been nice to him. He didn't do anything wrong, and with that sentence repeating in her mind, she tried to set up a nicer attitude. To begin, she forced herself to smile a little. HIs words were neutral and even calming a little, repeating that they were only here to help.
In the back of her mind she still didn't trust this whole happening, because she couldn't remember Bachelors making a gesture of helping another, without profiting from it themselves. But this stallion in front of her sounded honest and she decided to just go with it.
''I think you're right,'' she said, al though it felt more like a sorry in her mind. A sorry for snapping out at him, while he sounded so honest and neutral. She smiled. ''I think I would be of best use pulling those trees towards the stream. Y'know, not the best pushing strength in my body,'' she sorta joked, smiling. It was true, though. With her small, fragile body she would never get a death tree over on her own, while the stallion in front of her wouldn't need any help with that. Just like Sev - he had been fine on his own too.
She swung her tail shortly, looking over at Sev again, a bit of a questioning look in her golden eye. She didn't know if he would be fine working with the stallion or not.

Eila | Slave Brood
------------------
The spotted mare let out a slow breath, one she hadn't realized she'd been holding. It had obviously cost him an effort, but Ghost was keeping his temper in check, in order to hold to his word (or Cain's, truly) and to keep to the mission. Had it been Issac, or Brutus that an Exile had snapped at... Eila suppressed a shudder. No use dwelling on it; Cain had obviously known what he was doing when he assigned the various missions. Turning back to her work, Eila let out another breath, and as she inhaled again, for a fleeting moment alarm flared through the mare. She froze, nostrils flared as she sorted through the scents in the air. It was difficult, with all of this choking ash, but for a moment, she could have sworn... Eila took in several slow, measured breaths, even going so far as to close her eyes. No, she couldn't detect anything on the mild breeze...
Opening her eyes, Eila gave her short, bristly mane a brisk shake. She was just on edge, with this strange mission and all of these subtle undercurrents of tension. Although she didn't mind if the Bachelor herd was perceived as weak, she still had enough meager pride left to her to not wish to personally appear flighty, or silly, and scenting phantom predators on the acrid breeze wasn't going to help that. So it was with a mild expression that the red dun turned to the next appropriately sized tree, arching her neck and beginning to shove.
But her time as a loner had instilled deep caution and awareness within her, and so despite her resolve, Eila resumed her work with heightened sensitivity to her surroundings.
Because he could have sworn, that for a moment, the breeze had carried the scent of something non-equine, and it had set off every "predator" alarm in her body.

Rylynn gave a hardy snort, though the two Exiles gave a somewhat apologetic response to Ghost, the brood still wasn't pleased by their attitude in general. Couldn't they put aside their pathetic rumors about the Bachelors and just get things done? Suddenly she blinked, snapping herself out of thought and back into reality when Ghost introduced the two. "I am Ghost, Bachelor elite, and this is Rylynn. We are not here to cause trouble. I am merely making a suggestion that could save all of us some time and energy."
At her name the mare gave a little flick of her tail, giving acknowledgement to her mentioning before glancing over at the foul mouthed mare when she spoke. Sadly, Rylynn would have to agree with her. Even though she would've preferred to help knock down trees, she was simply not built for the task and would make much more use by rolling them down the bank. "Sev, if you're okay to push over trees with Ghost, I'll help Maori get them to the stream." She said calmly, looking over at the other brood for some sort of confirmation of her help.
However, it was only when the mare glanced over at Maori did her ears begin to twitch at a distance noise, a noise that inwardly worried every horse. Low growling echoed in her slender ears, causing her to flinch slightly. Surely it wasn't a grass beast, there was no grass for them to hide in. Quickly the mare began looking around, her ears swiveling in an attempt to figure out where the sound of was coming from. It didn't take long for her eyes to focus on the approaching silhouette of a Quiver Back, one of most feared predators in Chevalin, and words to come spilling out of her mouth. "A Quiver Back!" She neighed, giving an abrupt nudge with her rump to Ghost and flicking her nose towards the aggressive monster.

Everything was going fine, and I mean everything. Dawne had swiftly removed her ribbon from Vashti, just so she wasn't trying to drag the other foal around, it wasn't as safe but it was as the same time. Now Dawne had finally found some work, but had still splashed about the river to snatch some of the river plants to help with her goop-like structure to help hold up the bank. There was a little commotion in the woods above them and Dawne cautiously scrambled up it just to make sure nothing bad was happening. Just some of the horses shifting positions and partners by the way it had quieted down. Dawne smiled incase Mother could still see her, then she wheeled around and slid back down the bank, relishing in the mud and fun of it all.
Then there were great rumbling steps like that of a giant storm's thunder. A roar filtered through the trees. Dawne scrambled up from the bank and immediately into Vashti, the older foal.
"Momma! What is that?" The filly shouted, fear evident in her voice, she couldn't see it but it sounded big and terrible and it smelled horrible, like the rotting trees that surrounded the land.

Sev nodded assurance to Maori and Rylyn that he'd have no problem working with Ghost. The Elite surely did not look like he wanted to start a fight. Besides, downing trees would be easier if two strong stallions worked at it.
"Of course. I have no problem-" Sevastyan was cut off in the middle of his sentence by a huge roar.
His ears swiveled back to the noise, and soon his head followed. Sev's green eyes grew wide and one could see the anxiety behind them. A Quiver Back. Every muscle in his body tightened in anticipation, ready to spring. He would have let himself launch into a fleeing gallop too, if it weren't for his herdmates looking at the predator with the same terrified expression. His legs shook with adrenaline as he tried to calm down. He needed to stay to help them. Right? Or wrong? Would they run away too or fight the terrible thing? He secretly hoped they wouldn't chose the latter.
His heart melted at the sound of Dawne, who was a ways away: "Momma! What was that?"
He furrowed his brow, closed his eyes and sighed. The foals would be okay, he tried to reassure himself. Looking back on the foreboding mass lumbering closer, his heart rate quickened. He stared at it defensively, unsure of what was to come.

She smiled at Sev's assurance that he would be fine working with the stallion. She just wanted to be sure now that she knew a little about his anxieties. She didn't know where he stood about the Bachelors, so asking would be the least she could do. When she looked forward and heard the Bachelor mare's voice, she nodded in agreement. She could feel a certain hostility, or arrogance from the mare that spoke to her, but she couldn't really care about it. She felt hostile towards them and really had trouble staying friendly, so she couldn't blame them for just the same.
Just as she wanted to set her slim body into movement to get to the task they had gotten from their leader, a horrible, rumbling roar filled the air. Even before realization came to her mind an ice cold chill ran through her body and it felt like she froze from top to bottom. It felt like stones were tied to her hooves and as if her muscles had stopped moving. Before she knew it she could hear the group of horses startle, each one of them reacting in their own way, and it was the scared voices of the foals that awoke her from her shock. She let go of a high-pitched, soft neigh and burried her ears in her neck, not knowing what to do with the movement that she now finally got back into her body. She snorted, looked quickly around. Sev still stood a few steps away from her, his body filed with fear, just like hers. The others hadn't moved yet either, all she heard were startled voices, soft neighs of a Quiver Back coming their way.
But than she seemed to snap out of that shocked trance she had been in. She snorted loudly and than came into movement. ''We have to move.'' She neighed heavily, loudly. ''We have to move!'' Again, now even louder. She sprung away in a gallop, making a small round around the horses that stood around her. Next to Sev she stopped, giving him a quick nudge with her nose against his neck. ''Move!'' She said, panic coming through in her voice. She was damn scared, even though she tried to hide it. We can't fight that damn beast, she tangled up in her head.

[Ghost//Bachelor Elite//Stallion]
"Quiver Back!"
The words caught Ghost off guard. Turning on his heels, he noticed the massive predator as it charged toward the river bank where the younglings were. ''We have to move. We have to move! Move!'' Maori's panicked voice rang in the stallion's ears as he played through scenarios in his mind. They could run, but with Dawne being obviously blind and neither filly being incredibly fast or strong, there was a good chance they wouldn't be able to out run it. They could try to distract the creature and draw it away from the younglings, but there was no guarantee that would work. Or they could stand their ground and fight. He glanced around the small terrified party and back at the beast as he headed straight for the younglings. There was no other option. They had to fight.
"We must protect the younglings!" He hollered, rearing up before launching himself toward the creature. "We have to fight! It's the only way to protect the young, and your homeland!" He called back to the others, hoping they would join him in his attack. They would have to work together if they had any hope of defeating this menace.
Tapping into his gift, the spotted stallion began fading from sight. "Stay close to me and the creature won't be able to see you!" he shouted to the party, extending his gift out towards the terrified horses. "It may give us the advantage we need!" Ghost cursed inwardly as he continued his charge toward the quiver back. 'This is utterly insane...' he thought, staring at the beast's massive, saliva covered fangs. Cain had entrusted him with the brood's safety, of course they'd be attacked by Chevalin's most deadly predator... Ghost shuddered at the thought. The last time he'd fought a quiver back, it had left it's mark on him, shredding his spotted hide as if it was nothing. He bore the terrible scars even now, and the idea of facing one now sent a shiver down his spine.

Cholena | Exiles | Scout
The scene that unfolded before her happened so quickly, as if someone dropped a book and all the words fell out of the pages and onto the floor. The work they had been performing as an almost unit was nearly done together as one, but now it was nothing.
"Quiverback.!"
"We have to move.!"
"Protect the younglings.!"
"Mama, what is that.?"
Only one voice stood out to her, and the mare quickly evaded the protection that the draft was offering, barreling towards her filly. Death did not scare her, but the death of her daughter did immensely. Tears welled in her eyes, the mother making a sharp turn around her filly, ash flying from her hooves as she nudged Dawne towards the Elite who offered protection, more than she could give at least.
"Dawne, baby, quickly.! Run, trust mama and just run," the mare snatched up the red ribbon between her teeth, tugging on it until her daughter's gangly legs sprinted alongside hers. Everyone was in a panic, but Lena had to protect her daughter, and she would do so over everyone else. Coming to Ghost's side with Dawne in tow, the mare looked up at the spotted draft, eyes a mix of fear and determination.
"Please keep her safe," the pony whispered up to him, though he might not have looked at her, she made sure he heard, "She's all I have to protect in this world."
With her plea, the mare nuzzled her filly, blowing another comforting huff on her nose, and Lena feared it might be her last, "Dawne, don't leave his side. Do as mama says and stay here, please...don't move until Khala tells you."
Swallowing hard, the pony mare looked at her leader, blue eyes shining as she slowly walked out of the protective field around them. She was a horse of no ability or gift, she was a horse of her own four legs and her wit.
That was it, no, this was it.
Looking back at the group huddled, Lena's sense of protection kicked in, their faces those of her foals', of her daughter and colt, of Melia and Oliver, of Dawne. Steeling her nerves, she turned back around, she had everything and nothing to lose. If she died here, Kanu would care for their daughter, and yet, for her sins, she deserved death, but nothing this noble if it came to it.
"I'll distract it," she voiced, knees quivering like the quills on the creatures spine, "Ghost, get them out of here, get them safe."
With that, the chimera lunged forward. Ever since she escaped her speed had increased significantly, and if for once she might make use of it. Evading would be her only option, evading and distracting that is. Barreling towards the beast, she kicked up the sun-heated ash into its face, running in the opposite direction of her group.
"GO.!"
