Everything seemed to come in a blur around her, horses scattering in panic as the massive predator lumbered closer and closer. "We must protect the younglings!" She had heard Ghost yell, "We have to fight! It's the only way to protect the young, and your homeland!" And without a second word, the mighty Elite had taken off, thick clouds of ash getting tossed up behind him as his hooves struck the earth with each step. Immediately, Rylynn bolted after him, not far behind the stallion. "How are we gonna be able to fight this thing!?" She called from behind, the mare would do anything to take down the Quiver Back, but it was the matter of doing it that worried her. With several horses going at it, sure, maybe they'd be able to take it, but what if they couldn't? Surely everyone wouldn't help drive it off?
"Please keep her safe," Cholena had pleaded to Ghost, taking the stallions offering without a second thought to protect her daughter. Suddenly, another flurry of words came from the mare. "I'll distract it,", "Ghost, get them out of here, get them safe." What was she doing!? "Cholena! Wait!" Rylynn neighed loudly, galloping fiercely after the mare. Though she was courageous, she wouldn't be able to fight the beast alone. She had a daughter, and Rylynn couldn't bear the thought of the defenseless foal without her supportive mother.
At her side, Rylynn slid to a halt when Cholena blew up ash into its gnarled, saliva dripping, face. As it flinched and gave a disoriented snarl, the broodmare took its drawback to her advantage and aggressively kicked out her hind hooves, managing a firm blow to its snout, however it didn't seem to effect it much. Instead, it merely hobbled back a bit before swinging a massive paw towards Rylynn, a loud roar echoing out from its jaws, its long badger-like claws tearing the hide on her rump. Instinctively, the mare flailed back with a sharp whinny, her legs shaking underneath her for a moment as blood seeped from her newly made wounds like sap from a tree.

At Maori's firm push he sprinted into a gallop along her side. Fighting that thing would be crazy! He looked over his shoulder in earnest at everyone else. He felt so selfish just running off like that. Tugging a bit at Maori's mane to get her attention, he wheeled around.
"Maori! This is crazy! We have to go back and round up the foals and get them to safety or something! I don't think I can fight that thing, but helping others get to safety should be a must! You coming or what?" He called to her.
Sev ran towards Ghost at breakneck speeds. Coming up to him he inquired this:
"Ghost! I sure as hell can't fight that thing, but I can lead the foals away, and anyone else who values their lives! If the youngsters stay here they could die, but if someone were to fight the beast while I gathered the foals to safety, well... I think that would be the best bet."
Sev looked to Ghost, then the foals, then the Quiver Back. He turned around in search of Maori, but she was nowhere to be found. It instantly made him nauseous with fear. Fighting the urge to flee, he waited for Ghost's response.

MAORI | EXILE | MEDIC
It had been her best bet to take a run for it, but when she heard the others stay behind, only Sev following at her side, she felt her stomach turn. This was wrong. She felt the tucking of Sev at her mane and as she slowed down and came to a quick stop, she saw Sev turning and running back at them.
"Maori! This is crazy! We have to go back and round up the foals and get them to safety or something! I don't think I can fight that thing, but helping others get to safety should be a must! You coming or what?"
She smiled completely out of her comfort zone, touched by the fact that the anxious stallion didn't have to think twice to step in and safe the foals. He was right. They could run, like a bigger lot of the group, but the foals, and especially Dawn, would die out there. They would become one with the ashes, teared apart by the huge Quiver Back, just like many of their family had done when the fire razed over the lands. And especially that was wrong. Not even to think about her herd, her family, that they left behind when they ran.
She couldn't leave them behind. She turned her ears in her neck and quickly observed the group; she saw how Cholena dropped Dawn at Ghost's feet, disappearing just like the huge Elite had done. And so did Sev, when he finally reached Ghost. Cholena, on another hand, got back into sight and driven crazy by the thought of loosing her daughter, she ran to fight the beast. Or distract it. She couldn't let that happen. And just as she saw Rylynn ran after Cholena, she did just the same. As fast as her hooves could carry her she rumbled towards the Quiver Back and the two mares that were brave enough to come close to the beast. She wasn't brave. Nor was she adventurous of heroic. But this wasn't the time to think about what she was, because when she arrived close to the Quiver Back, Cholena had already made him go angry by kicking dust all up in it's snout, while Rylynn gave a major kick onto it with her hind legs. Maori made a small turn around Rylynn and saw the huge, sharp claws missing her body by an inch, while it hit Rylynn's hind with a major hit, tearing her hind apart like it had the substance of water. With her ears burried in her neck and fear rumbling through her body, her mind set at zero, she pushed her body against Rylynn's, trying to keep her up on her feet, keeping her from falling down to the earth. Blood gushed from her wounds, but luckily Maori had seen more than enough blood in her life to just look through that, all though it made her definitley realize what kind of pain the mare had to be in. She would stitch her up later, if the three of them could get out of here. They'd definitley distracted him from the two foals, even though it went less subtile than she'd hoped.
''Are you okay? Can you move?'' Maori spoke hasted, a shiver of fear in her voice. ''We have to move or we die right here, under his claws,'' she neighed, quickly looking at Cholena who had already moved out of the Quiver Back's reach. She could hear the Quiver Back roar and snort his noise like crazy, probably because of the irritation the two had caused. A shiver of fear ran back and forth over her spine, while she threw a quick look at the Quiver Back, who slowly stepped his huge foot forward to come closer to them and probably hit another time, probably being angry out of his mind and very greedy because of the blood he could smell.

Cholena | Exiles | Scout
Lena whipped around the back of the beast, coming up on the opposite side of the other two mares that came to aid her. Rylynn was bleeding, and the pony knew that the scent of metallic blood would only intensify the Quiver Back's desire. Again, Lena come to its face, throwing up more ash into its eyes and nose; a predator relied on its sight and smell, if those were altered or hindered, they would have better chances of fighting against it.
"Maori," the scout called, looking at them over the creature, "Get Rylynn out of here, she's injured.! We can't take any chances with her getting hurt worse."
The sound of her voice so close to the animal caused its attention to shift, it's dark eyes locking on her like a lunar raven on a shining gem. Without thinking, she reared up, smashing her hooves on top of the creature's head, feeling one catch the soft flesh of one of those dark orbs. It howled in pain, shaking its head as Lena again threw herself at him, attempting to seize its ear between her teeth. She almost succeeded, snatching the tip of her target before the beast lashed out at her, having enough of the mare's antics. The back of its paw threw her, Lena's teeth and lips covered in blood as she slightly tore away the ear she had held on to.
The mare coughed, laying a few feet away from the Quiver Back on her side. The shove had tossed her a bit from the animal, but now she thankfully had its attention more than Rylynn and Maori. Blood and ashy breath escaped her muzzle as she stood, shakily, to her hooves, watching in momentary horror as the beast stalked towards her. It was deranged, salivating onto the ash ground; everything on this island was dead, dying, or starving. The Quiver Back was obviously the last two, so it wouldn't allow fresh kill to leave its sights so quickly. Panicking, the mare looked to see where everyone else was, but thankfully, she saw no one except the other two mares, meaning Ghost had them safely tucked away under his gift. The enraged roar of the beast brought her back to focus, but by the time she was about to bolt away, the creature was closing in.
It snarled, so close that Lena could smell the carrion in its lips, and frightened the mare made a quick 180 turn in the opposite direction, heading towards the river at the bottom of the hill. But the mare's hesitation costed her, the thick claws taking across her back, leaving open gashes along her shoulders. Her breath caught in her throat, the pain stunning the chimera as she came to the ridge of the hill. Short legs gave out, the exile tumbling down the ashen hill to the river her daughter was playing in not an hour earlier. A thud and splash, Lena lay on the bank, water running red as her now ash coated wounds bleed into the trickling river. Weakly, she tried to force herself up, blue eyes watching as the beast roared again, making its descent down the hill after her.

[Ghost//Bachelor Elite//Stallion]
Everything happened so quickly. One minute, the small group of horses had joined him out of the predator's sight, and the next, Cholena was charging willy nilly toward the beast. "I'll distract it, Ghost, get them out of here, get them safe. GO!" Those were the mare's words as she foolishly ran out on her own to face the creature. Ghost snorted in frustration. What the hell was she thinking?! Before he had a chance to respond to the chaos, Rylynn darted out after the pony mare, only to be met with a claw swipe to her tender flank.
"Ghost! I sure as hell can't fight that thing, but I can lead the foals away, and anyone else who values their lives! If the youngsters stay here they could die, but if someone were to fight the beast while I gathered the foals to safety, well... I think that would be the best bet." Sev's voice mirrored the older stallion's thoughts and Ghost nodded in agreement. "Be careful..." The spotted elite murmured, wheeling around to face his foe, unseen.
Angrily, He charged into the fray, taking notice of Maori as she rushed to the lady brood's side. "Maori! Get her to safty!" He barked, glancing at the pair briefly as he allowed himself to appear to materialize. Ghost turned his attention back to the beast in time to see Cholena attack once more, only to be thrown back, bleeding profusely. As the pony rolled down into the shallows of the river, the spotted stallion whinnied angrily, rearing up to paw at the air before charging full force at the quiver back. As he approached the creature head on, he tapped into his gift once more, vanishing, only to swerve out of the beast's direct path at the last moment, kicking out violently towards it's jaw. He was rewarded with a satisfying 'CRACK' as his massive hooves met flesh and bone. Coming to a halt, he turned quickly, preparing to attack the creature again, only to realize the beast had spotted Cholena's injured form once more. The massive creature barreled toward the pony, intent on making her it's next meal.
Images of Robin as she lay on the blood stained grass danced through his mind as the quiver back approached the mare. Not now. Not again. Not ever. He would not watch another foal have to grow up motherless. Another stallion have to grieve the loss of his mate while consoling a child who didn't quite understand. Another family torn apart by needless tragedy. "NO!" He roared , galloping as fast as his legs could carry him toward the injured mare. He arrived at his destination in the nick of time, standing protectively over Cholena as her blood mingled with the cool river water. Fury overtook the stallion and he charged toward the beast, lunging for the creature's throat. Sinking his dull teeth into the beast's thick hide, Ghost lashed out at the quiver back's underbelly with his sharp hooves. Claws raked across his chest, but he barely noticed, adrenaline surging through his veins like a forest fire.

The events blurred all of Dawne's senses. That moment of quiet and then the explosion of motion and screams and fear and the smells. Metallic and dusty like the dead ash. The rotten smell of the Quiver back. The smells were only one thing that blinded Dawne from her other senses. The motion and then the noise, Momma had screamed and the filly flared her nostrils, legs starting to shake. She pressed close to the stallion, Ghost, that Cholena had left her with and then he was gone as well.
The thundering of hooves, horses were darting everywhere. Then Ghost was shouting, from the splashing in the river all the filly could tell was that was where they must be. It was so hard to stay back with the other stallion, her legs quivering and wishing they could run to wherever Mommy was, she would protect Dawne always and forever. Never would there be a time when Lena would leave her daughter alone anymore. Maori, a mare from Daddy's herd was being shouted at. Rylynn was being mentioned in hoarse words everything was out of order for the filly and she began to sob. No tears just awful moaning sounds and hiccupy noises emitted from her. She pressed close to the stallion Ghost had left with her, her scared demeanor easy to pick out and see.
"What's happening to Mommy and who are you and what's going on!" The filly sobbed through all the words, they became blurred and rushed and she was too far from understanding without her sight to know exactly how things would likely play out. Another roar of pain and fury. The filly took tentative steps towards the noise of Ghost, the Quiver Back, as they had shouted, and her Mommy. They were close enough. Dawne would be able to curl up next to her mother and wake up, this had to be a bad dream. The filly took more steps, the long ribbon dragging in the dusty dirt, loose. No one to lead her. The stallion, whoever he was better let her go to see Mom and wake up, he might just be part of the nightmare.

[ Khala | The derpalerp who's supposed to be a leader ]
As the other horses settled into their work, Khala quietly dismissed herself from Ghost and trotted a distance off. She'd given a glance to the landscape to check if they were safe, seeing nothing at the time and continuing without worry. Finally, when she stood atop a hill, the mare took in what she could see around her, and the very distant shapes of another team of horses working on the land. Closing her deep yellow eyes, she took in a deep breath, and with the exhale she flooded her gift into the ground around her. With her focus so driven into what she was doing, the noises behind her flooded into the background. She could feel the earth begin to ripen beneath her hooves, the hidden grass seed slowly falling into place and the soil about it blackening, turning into the soft loam she used to feel when she would roll as a much younger horse.
Then came the yelling. Torn from her focus, Khala spun on a hoof to take in a horrifying sight- a giant, black quiver back had found their small band, and had already started wrecking havoc. Not a moment later, she was pounding across the ash covered plains, dust flying up behind her in a menacingly dark cloud. As she ran, the mare tore rock from beneath the surface, hurtling them forwards towards the beast. "NOT MY HERD, BEAST," she bellowed as she came. Ghost had charged forward in defense of Cholena, and it appeared several of the others were also protecting those injured- injured! Maori, who was thankfully a medic, was with one of the Bachelor mares, and the foals- panic gripped her for a moment until she determined they were out of harm's way- for the moment.
Rage was quickly boiling up inside her stomach, and it was not long after that the rocks were flying in the direction of the bear, her aim careful to not hit the massive spotted stallion as he also attacked. The leader slid to a halt between the bear and as many others as she could, all the while tearing solid earth from the soil and throwing it continuously at the target. Adrenaline coursed through her veins, and she could hardly focus on anything but the bear- it had to be stopped! She had to protect them!

As Maori came to the mare's side, Rylynn gave a hardy snort and shake to her neck, gritting her teeth as her fresh wound stung from the ash and dirt. "I'm okay! I'm okay!" She called out through the chaotic thrall of horses, "I can walk, and I'll be okay, for now focus on the others. It's just a scratch." Though she would've preferred to take a moment to catch her breath, she couldn't afford letting her minor injury get in the way. Instead, she steadied her, taking quick breaths of air before targeting the large Quiver Back, her eyes coated in horror as Cholena took several harsh beatings. Rylynn wanted to scream, how could this all be happening!? Only mere moments ago were they peacefully tending to the land without trouble, now they were battling a Quiver Back for survival.
A small pinprick of relief stabbed the brood, however, as Ghost and Khala began attacking as well, using their gifts to their advantages, distracting the mighty Quiver Back from the injured mare. Ghost threw the monster off guard as he used invisibility to maneuver around it, while Khala had began throwing chunks of earth and rock at it. "Get to Cholena!" Rylynn neighed, giving a firm nudge with her shoulder to the other mare to get her moving, and fast. There was no time to waste, especially now that Cholena was severely injured.
But there was something wrong. Vashti was still safetly tucked down in the river, but Dawne was not there nor with Ghost. Instead, the eyeless filly was wandering helplessly towards the noise, her expression filled with worry and fear. "Dawne! Dawne stop!" Rylynn screamed, galloping toward the tiny filly and snatching her red, now ash covered, ribbon from the ground and practically dragging her away from the chaos but kept her pace slow enough for the youngling to follow. Awkwardly, the grullo brood nudged the petite youngling down the bank and toward the river and Cholena.
"Dawne, listen, your mother is hurt, but she is going to be okay. I promise. Maori is going to take care of her," She huffed "but you must stay here no matter what, unless someone tells you otherwise. It's not safe up there." With a final nudge forwards, Rylynn released Dawne's ribbon and gave a little comforting touch with her nose to the filly's back before heaving herself up the bank awkwardly and giving a cough as clouds of ash were kicked up from the hectic flurry of horses above.

Cholena | Exiles | Scout
Fuzzy, muffled noises finally became clearer as the pony mare opened her eyes. Her head rocked, and it wasn't until she tried to stand that she noticed her temple bleeding from the impact of the rocks at the bottom of the river. Blue eyes focused, scanning the body that stood over her, and it was one she least expected. Ghost howled at the beast as it started coming down the bank, uncertainty in the creatures dark eyes. Well, one dark eye and the other damaged.
Khala had began her own assault on the beast, using her gift to hurl stones towards its body. Maori was ordered by Rylynn to tend to her, but Lena refused to let their few resources used on her. The formerly mentioned grullo lady was seen briefly by the mother, her blue eyes widening when she saw her filly wandering aimlessly. If Ghost was above her, her filly was defenseless. Panic rose in her throat, but as she saw Rylynn take lead of her daughter and quickly make their way down the bank towards them. Lena got up, shakily rising to her hooves as Dawne was placed in front of her.
"Thank you," she breathed to the other mare before she scurried away, wrapping her neck around her daughter's withers. Tears stained her blackened cheeks, leaving trails of her mosaic coat in their wake; the fear of losing her daughter drive her to protect, and she would no matter what it costed. As long as Dawne was safe, any amount of sacrifice was worth it to the mother. Never again would she lose a foal, never again would she let harm come to one of her children. She had failed so many times before, and Dawne was her unicorn sent gift.
"Ghost," the mare nickered, bringing herself to the stallion's side, "Tell me what we need to do."
The mare, for once, would follow his orders, because now they were as equals, and not superior and slave. Her eyes glanced around the bank, catching the felled trees they had piled up. An idea struck her, and she quickly whipped her head around to count everyone and analyze their positions, as well as the beast's.
"Ghost," she said again, black curls sticking to her coat, her blood gluing the hair to her sides, "The trees, we can use the trees. If we lead it down the river, we can shove the pile on top of it."

MAORI | EXILE | MEDIC
She knew that Rylynn's wounds were severe, she knew she couldn't stay at her side too long. She wouldn't die from the wounds and as long as she tended to them later, she would be -probably with scars that would never leave her body again- fine for than. Cholena, on another hand, was another story. She didn't know how the mare was doing and after the roll down the bank into the water and onto the rocks, she could only think of the worse.
"I'm okay! I'm okay! I can walk, and I'll be okay, for now focus on the others. It's just a scratch."
She knew the mare was washing away her own pain with her words, because she knew she was into a lot at the moment, but the most important thing now was to help safe the others, to make sure every single one of them came out alive. With the push of Rylynn's body to hers, as a sign she had to move, she shot away towards the place the horrifying scene was taking place. She leaped around the beast, even though she wanted to help both Ghost and Khala, she knew her place was at Cholena's side, observing her wounds and looking how she could help her the best at the moment. Getting her to safety. As fast as her hooves could carry her she rumbled down the bank and as soon as she was below, in reach of the mare, she slowed down quickly, making way into the water carefully so she wouldn't hurt Cholena by jumping in as a maniac. When she had arrived there, Cholena was already pulling her body up from the river, while Rylynn brought Dawn to her. She smiled heartbroken when she saw she mother taking in her blind child, while she herself was dangerously wounded. ''We have to get both of you out of here,'' she said while she made herself stand in between Cholena and Ghost who was fighting the beast. She didn't want the pony mare again to get hurt even more, she didn't want another mother and daughter bond ripped away from the earth. When Ghost would lash out back, she atleast knew she was getting hurt, and not the mother and foal in front of her.
She tried to quickly investigate Cholena's wounds now that she stood next to her, but all the blood gushing from the huge gasps in her flesh didn't made the sight any better. They were in the river, but there was no way they had time to clean up her wounds.
"Ghost, the trees, we can use the trees. If we lead it down the river, we can shove the pile on top of it."
Maori quickly looked over her shoulder towards Ghost, who was hitting the beast hard, but knew he wouldn't fell him all alone. Quickly thinking, she focussed her eyes on Rylynn, who was already making her way up. The pony mare was right, the only way of getting that beast down, was if they'd all work together. ''Rylynn!' She neighed loudly. ''Can you get to the pile of trees? And push them down when the beast is down in the river? Look out for Sev, he could help you push them!'' She called loudly towards the mare. This would only work if they teamed up, and as much as she wanted, she couldn't leave the pony mare's side. She nudged softly with her nose to Cholena's neck, at a place there weren't any wounds to hurt her even more. ''Cholena, can you move?'' She asked while she looked at her and Dawn. Luckily, the small, blind filly was not hurt. ''We have to move you to the other side, get you to the other bank. If that beast is coming out down here, which it certainly will with the smell of blood filling the air, we have to get you, and her, to a safer place. And that safer place is not down here.'' Her body was shaking underneath her, filled with adrenaline and fear, but after working so long as a Medic, day in and day out, she had learned to focus on one thing, and one thing only. And currently, that were Cholena and her filly. There weren't any herbs that would still grow out here, but maybe if she looked under one of the trees roots, or got some water, she could at least try to clean the wounds. But first, she had to get the both of them out of here.

"Dawne, listen, your mother is hurt, but she is going to be okay. I promise. Maori is going to take care of her," Dawne's fear melted partially as Mamma was felt. Dawne huffed onto her mother's neck, her whimpering ceasing and then she was wrapped in her mother's embrace. Tears wetting her coat. Dawne nuzzled into her mother's side, finally happy when just out of reach roars and screeches assaulted her ears, but nothing mattered. Not until Lena suggested they literally crush the bear with trees.
Dawne was that little bit of uncertain, her mom had said that? Really? Wow, the filly had never heard such seemingly cruel words uttered from her mother's lips, but the filly almost felt as if it was with good need to kill the beast causing so much havoc. She whimpered and then quieted, she had to let her Mother help her get out of danger. Now as Maori spoke Dawne leapt up and clamped her mouth down on her mom's braid. "Oh the water's not deep, even Mamma can probably get through it even though she's hurt." And the filly promptly tugged on her mother's mane and began her slow walk through the rushing water to the opposite bank.

"Hello Dawne! This is Sev, I'm gonna take you out of this mess okay? Your mom is..." Sev didn't know if she was actually okay, but he wanted to soothe the foal. "Is alive. She's.."
He craned his neck around in search of he poor filly's mother. Spying her in the middle of the fray he turned back to Dawne, but just like that she was no longer by his side. Dizzy with fear he turned around and around trying to find her.
"Dammit, Sevastyan. You freaking idiot! You can't even do one thing. Good for nothing..." Sev reprimanded himself over and over as he continued the search.
Then he saw her alongside Rylyn, the two of them making pace towards Cholena.... and was that Maori?
"Thank goodness. I suppose I'm not a total failure, I haven't killed anyone yet..." Remembering his father he sighed. "At least not by accident."
He made his way over there, somewhat scared that he would be in trouble with Ghost, or Cholena, or even Dawne, because he lost the filly. He swallowed hard and galloped to them. He had the urge to go back, avoid them all, and go by himself. The nauseous feeling he had gotten stronger in his stomach. He heard himself counting down the feet until he arrived at the group. Once there, he winced visibly when he spoke to them.
"Sorry, I got lost. I am really sorry that I lost Dawne! I turned around for half a second and she was gone and..." Sev sighed, no one probably wanted to hear his sob story. "Okay. How are we going to kill this thing? I want to make myself useful, and I won't fail this time."

Cholena | Exiles | Scout
The blood dripping from her coat slowly made its way to the murky waters below her, and the group was now at the bottom of the hill. Most of them at least, with the two group leaders battling it out with the beast, and Rylynn and Vashti out of sight, most likely together. Maori advised her to leave, to take Dawne with her, but she had another plan. As far as she knew, her and Rylynn were the only ones bleeding as much as they were, and the scent of blood would only draw the beast to them.
"I can't leave with Dawne," the mother said frantically, eying her daughter with worry as she assured her mother could walk through the shallow waters, "My blood will only draw it to her, I can't put her in that kind of danger...I can't...."
The mare craned her neck over her foal, looking at the others near her. If they were to draw this creature into the shallow ravine they were standing in, that hulking body of the beast would have a hard time crawling back out. Adrenaline ran through her veins, circulating blood and energy to every inch of her body. If she could convince Rylynn to stand at the bottom with her...
"Maori, please get the younger ones to safety. You're right, the safer place is not down here, but she needs protection more than I," the mare urged, refusing to leave this to everyone else to handle, "If something happened to Dawne I would never forgive myself."
Without taking any protests, the chimera looped the raggedy red ribbon around the medic's neck, looking Dawne in her face, blue eyes met with the cloth around her daughter's eyes, "Dawne, follow Maori, she will get you and Vashti to the bank. Mama will be fine; your mama has seen scary beasts, this one's no problem."
The mare smiled, even though her daughter couldn't see it, she did. A huff was blown into the foal's nose, a nuzzle to her forehead as the mother lifted her now steeled determined face to the grullo, "Get them up the bank, do not let them leave your side. Sev," the mare called, turning to the stallion who seemed like a nervous wreck, but she smiled weakly at him for comfort, "I need you to do something very important."
The mare trotted over to him, her shoulders aching and burning at the movement, but she hardly had time to notice, "Rylynn ran up the bank, I need you to send her back down here and have her meet me just in front of the felled trees," as if to reinforce her directions, she nodded toward the pile of dead trees they had laid together at the edge, "We'll have Khala and Ghost lure it down there until it catches scent of Rylynn's and my blood. That should force it this way, I'll need you to stay at the top, ready to shove the whole pile down on it. Can you do this.?"
The pony looked up at the stallion, black curls, some stained in blood, whipping around her, repeating a shortened plan, "Send Rylynn down, and push the felled trees into the river on the beast, can you do this.?"
She needed to make certain he understood, but time was a precious resource they didn't have, "You must go, now.!"
The mare nudged his shoulder encouragingly, bolting towards Ghost and Khala. She just needed them to hear their plan, she didn't need to get too close. When she was in earshot, she hollered, "Ghost.! Khala.! Lead the Quiver Back down the river.! We'll bury it under the trees there.!"
Following the plan she made, Lena started into a gallop, small hooves splashing up ashy, murky water into the air. All the movement stirred the blood trying to clot in her wounds, causing fresh blood to seep out down her back and belly. Perfect, as long as the creature caught scent of her, it would follow. Smiling to herself, she made her way to the rendezvous spot where she hoped Rylynn would be.

The grullo mare heaved herself up from the bank, giving a groan or two as she forcefully hauled her hind quarters up, pain shooting down her leg where the wound sat, but she refused to let it bother her. Instead, she did her best to ignore it, biting her lip slightly and gritting her teeth. Suddenly her ears swiveled behind her at Cholena's thanks and she let her head follow with a nod before letting her ears return to their forwards position, taking in Maori's following words. "Rylynn! Can you get to the pile of trees? And push them down when the beast is down in the river? Look out for Sev, he could help you push them!" Rylynn suddenly threw her head to where Sev stood beside the two mares and filly, and quickly she motioned him to follow. Catching the fearful stallions words, Rylynn shot him a sympathetic look before speaking, "Sev, don't worry about it, things happen. Now come on, help me roll those trees down when the Quiver Back comes."
With a little rear and kicking of her front hooves, Rylynn sprinted off towards the loose trees that weren't far off, coming to a firm halt before gazing around with narrowed, ashy, eyes. "Ghost! Khala!" She whinnied sharply, "You two have to try and lead the Quiver Back down the bank!" At her final word, Rylynn was suddenly overwhelmed with a new fear and problem. What if they weren't able to crush the beast with the trees? What if it only made it angrier! If the monster managed to escape the fallen trees, Cholena and Dawne would probably never see the light of another day! And unicorns know what would happen to Maori and the rest of them.
"Sev hurry! We have to pile as many trees as we can on that thing when it's down in the bank!" The brood called, already shoving one of the fallen trees they had uprooted toward the steep shore of the river. They needed to kill the Quiver Back, and if they didn't there was a high chance that'd it kill one, or more, of them.

Eila | Slave brood
------------------
It was funny, how at such pivotal times in one's life, time could slow, grind to a surreal and gelatinous progression.
From the moment the cry of "quiverback" had rang in her ears, such an event had occured. The lights seemed brighter, the colours more saturated, and events seem to flow past Eila in jerking slow motion, not touching or affecting her, but merely moving past.
This was it. This was her chance. It wasn't a good one, and she didn't bother trying to calculate her chance of success. She'd already spent seven years watching and waiting and growing ever more complacent; she knew this in her heart. She didn't have time to wait for the perfect opportunity to escape; it wouldn't occur in the first place. No, this was her chance. Fail or not, she wasn't going to waste it.
With a sort of snap, time realigned with Eila's senses, and suddenly she was standing still in the midst of utter chaos. Her ears flattened against the clamor of hooves and shouts, roars and cries, and her nose wrinkled as she inhaled the swirling ash and dust kicked up in the fray. Horses were down; she could see that. None looked dead, though it was hard to tell.
Eila took a step backwards, blessing the unicorns for her red coat that blended so well with the burned landscape. She took another, then halted at a particularly piercing cry. Her heart twisted as guilt thrummed through her, an insidious flood; escape attempt it may be, but it was also desertion. Not from the Bachelor herd, for in her mind they held no valid claim over her. No, the desertion was to her fellow broods. Her heart twisted again, before Eila callously shoved the emotions away.
No, she had to steel herself against such softness. She had to.
She took another step in to the hazy, acrid breeze.
