Amarante - Scout - Exile
Amarante shivered when she heard it might be a bear, though she had never run into one she heard they were fierce and the prospective of running into one was a bit scary yet exciting. The only battle she had ever been in where practice ones, so this was a chance to show she had what it took. She would let outlaw lead the way, however, she wasn't dumb. Being cocky got a horse killed really quick. She was worried though, did they has enough horses to take on a bear? She trusted their leader, and decided if he thought they could handle it she wouldn't question it.
She knew that, despite how terrifying the prospect of running into a bear was. She wanted to help her new herd, and the best way to do it was to help them get back their former land. 'Or what is left of it.' She thought looking around. She stepped up, "I agree, we should go after this threat. If we don't who's saying when it will catch the herd off guard. It might even lead us to the new razing lands." she said absentmindedly. She was ready to face whatever left these tracks, with all she had. (205)

Galloway - Scout - Exiles
Gallow listened as one by one the other horses in his team spoke their opinion on the matter.
An Ash Bear. Gallow had heard about them from some of the Exiles in the herd. He’d never come across one personally, at least not an Ash one. He’d seen bears before on his lone walks through the islands. They were wary creatures that would not attack unless desperate or threatened. He of course always kept his distance. But an Ash Bear sounded like something that would strike at the smallest annoyance.
Gallow still wasn’t okay with the fact that the sun was going down. No matter what the others said it was a huge risk factor that darkness was coming on. It may be that the creatures are moving and awake, but it also meant the possibilities of a hoof sliding in a hole wrong. Of one tiny mistake with huge consequences. He wasn’t a reckless stallion. He was brave and fearless, but not reckless.
Gallow shook his head left and right to rid the negative thoughts overcrowding his mind. We’re a strong group, he said to himself. These are just dumb beasts lumbering around. We can easily take them.
Gallow grit his teeth and turned to look at the others. “Well everyone seems to be on the same page. And so am I. Let’s get this thing out of our lands and reclaim our grazing grounds.”
That reminded Gallow of what Outlaw had stated. It would be nice to think that there were extra grazing grounds for the growing Exiles. But he kept that hope buried deep under expected disappointment. It was better to be surprised by something good than to expect something great and be let down. At least that was his way of thinking.

Despite the consensus reached by the group of horses to follow the tracks and chase out whatever made them which was assumed to be an Ash Bear, the Guard could tell how weary his team members were feeling. Their answers were short, and their body language...wasn't exactly as enthusiastic as his own. Outlaw may have been cocky, but only with his godlike looks. Well, godlike in his own mind. As for his decision making, he was always thorough and never chose an option that would just cause problems down the road. Yes this mission had the potential of being dangerous for them, but he would rather put the team knowingly in charge of expelling predators in danger rather than the rest of the herd who wouldn't know what was happening should they be ambushed. The safety of many over the safety of five assigned to take care of the issue. However, he was grateful for Khazada's support in helping protect the group. She was a Guard too, so the mare would be of great help. From the looks of it she had a good head on her shoulders too, and appeared brave and loyal to a fold. And despite the weariness of two of the Scouts, Amarante and Galloway, he knew that they would stay with the group and help should they have to. To ease their souls, the tall Guard circled around the group and stood between Amarante and Galloway. After brushing shoulders gently with the two in order to raise their morale, he stepped forward and began following the trail of tracks, hoping the others would walk beside him so they could converse. His tone was warm and relaxed despite the black oncoming wall of night coming to envelop them as he spoke. "My ability will aid me in traveling unnoticed at night. Should we come up on anything questionable, I'll go on ahead and make sure everything is safe then report back to all of you, if that's alright." he said as he aimed the last part of his sentence towards Delvin. The strangely marked stallion lifted his head up higher to watch the red sun slip below the horizon, leaving the sky above their heads shades of purples, blues and blacks only broken up by dots of stars. Even those seemed tiny and further away than normal. But Outlaw was thankful for this mission. It gave him something else to do rather than risk sleeping and waking up in strange places. After he spoke his peace, he glanced among the group with an undeniable confidence and a warm smile that was like a comforting blanket around whomever his gaze landed on. For the most part, he acted so confident so the horses around him won't be as apprehensive. The stallion hated seeing his comrades anything but the picture of positivity, even if they were a little nervous. So he always did what he could to make them feel more at ease. Outlaw was always rather good at this, what with his charming smile and encouraging behavior. The pale stallion brought out the best in horses, one of the few things about him besides his looks that he was proud of. Now that the sun was sleeping, Outlaw took a deep breath of crisp, clean air. After those weeks away, the ash wasn't stirred up and tainting the air with that dusty smell it carried. The scent of newness made the Guard feel alive, and his heart beat that much faster. Without the competition for brightness with the sun, the stars shone brighter in the sky and winked down happily at the travelers. The tracks stretched for awhile, so he decided to start a conversation. There was no harm in it, after all. "The stars are burning so bright tonight...like they're lighting the sky a bit extra just to show the way for us." A gentle breeze blew towards their faces, tossing Outlaw's onyx colored mane like a dark curtain in the wind. This night was just so peaceful and, despite the ashen landscape, perfect to him. The smile he wore never left his face, but grew more wistful as he looked back from the sky above to the tracks beneath their hooves. Khazada- Guard- Exiles
How Outlaw could have such confidence and such a calm about this task was beyond the draft mare. However Khazada couldn't help but to admire that trait in the black and white stallion and it seemed to ease some of the doubts in her own mind. No, it probably wasn't going to be a stroll through the Summer Fields but it was better to have a more optimistic outlook. "At least it's only a bear and not a pack of grass beasts or something like that." Khazada nickered, flicking an ear over to Gallow and Amarante though those words were more for her own comfort then the two scouts. Shaking her head to release any of the extra tension she had in her shoulders and neck, Khazada lowered her head some, her gaze drifting down to the tracks as the group began following them.
Even as night was settling in, Khazada couldn't help but remove her gaze from the tracks and glance up at the sky when Outlaw mentioned the stars. Pausing in her stride, she let a small smile slip upon her face. Maybe Outlaw was right, maybe the stars seemed to know the importance of their task as well. Or maybe it was just one of those nights. But Khazada liked the idea of some luck finally showing for their group as no doubt they needed all the luck they could manage. It would seem even the night wind was on the dun mare's side as it brushed her long forelock out of her eyes. This made her smile grow a bit more as she felt her spirit begin to rise.
But Khazada knew she couldn't let her guard down and reluctantly, she tore her gaze from the night sky and back to the tracks they followed. Having fell in behind the others, the draft mare gave a quite snort though one ear was flicked back in case anything should try and sneak up on their small group.

Galloway - Scout - Exiles
Gallow’s heart rate slowed as the air began to cool with the setting sun. He loved the night. Everything about it was quite and secret. The breath he usually held around other horses slowly released during the night. It was his own little paradise.
Gallow heard Outlaw’s statement. A bit of jealously drifted over his mind but overall he was impressed and in awe at the stallion. Gallow awaited eagerly for his own ability to surface.
“What a perfect ability Outlaw!” He hadn’t meant to sound so eager, but he really was. It always felt good when a team fit together right. “That would be great. Better to have us prepared then to jump in blind.”
The black and white stallion brushed shoulders with Gallow and the bay mare, Amarante. The touch was reassuring and frightening to Gallow at the same time. He wasn’t use to being near any horse. But he knew the stallion was trying to keep the groups attitude up. And it worked. Gallow was ready for the night to begin.
Gallow drew his eyes up to the fading sky. His comment about the stars made Gallow wonder if it was true. Where they showing us the way? They did seem extra bright this night. Their distant light eased Gallow’s fears.
Khazada came up from behind the other horses and mentioned a positive fact. Gallow nodded his head in agreement.
“You’re absolutely right, Khazada. It’ll be so much easier to take care of one creature than a whole pack of them!”
Gallow wanted to connect with these horses. He never was so good at keeping friends. He needed to change in order to survive the oncoming struggles the herd would face. It was always better to have friends in time of great trials.
With his spirits a little more renewed and the gentle cover of night to boost his confidence Gallow was ready to keep moving forward. He took a glance at the other mare, Amarante. He hoped she was also just as renewed as the rest. Her and Delvin both. He knew they could finish this job if they worked together.
"If everyone is on the same page I say we go ahead and follow the trail. Like Outlaw said we can send him out to scout ahead and go from there. The sun's set. There's no wasting time now." Gallow was beginning to feel the rush of adrenaline and the lightness of adventure.

Delvin - Scout - Exiles
Delvin was glad to hear the team was in accordance to a plan: track down the bear that made the tracks, and send the sorry bugger packing to another part of the island. The bay flicked an ear at Outlaw, who by far seemed to be in the highest spirits out of the bunch. That always perplexed Delvin, how some horses could remain so optimistic even in these dire scenarios. Though, he supposed it wasn't entirely a bad thing. The cheery stallion's comment on his ability was a welcome asset, of that he was doubly sure. "Good, that'll make things easier on us. Bears can see in the dark, but they can't see very far. Now we'll have a leg up on 'em," Delvin commented, giving Outlaw a nod.
Night had fallen upon the ashy land now; the burning sun had finally disappeared beyond the horizon. The island looked even more foreign now than it had under the scorching light of the sun, if that was possible. The teams' hooves plodded through the ash with continuous dull thuds. The bay stallion briefly wondered if the other teams were having any success, specifically the ones tasked with beginning the healing process on the land. Some foliage had already begun trying to forge a new ecosystem in the ash, but nowhere near enough to sustain the herd for an extended period of time.
Small bouts of conversation began to pop up amongst the group, most of it meant to keep spirits high. Delvin was actually thankful for that as well. He knew he wasn't the most inspirational of horses, so he was glad for his team's vigor. He supposed it was good to get to know a few more of his herd mates, too. That was another department the Scout lacked in, sociability.
"Aye, one bear against five horses are favorable odds," Delvin commented. If the bear had any sense, and was in fact alone, it may rescind its territory without an actual fight. Grass Beasts were another story, he thought, thinking back to how he received the majority of his scars. Nasty little things, they were.

As the temperature rapidly began to cool, Outlaw couldn't help but shiver a few times until his body was able to adjust to the rapidly approaching coolness. Normally there were trees all around that absorbed warmth all day from the sun and made the transition of temperature more moderate, less abrupt. But without any vegetation, the climate seemed to breathless in the drop of a stone. At the eager response from Galloway, the stallion grinned brightly and bobbed his head up and down. "Exactly." he chuckled.
While everyone was now getting used to the darkness and the shifting, the Guard kept an eye on the tracks to make sure they continued on the right path. He could see the stars out of the corners of his eyes anyway. However when the team leader spoke, the pale stallion flicked an ear in Delvin's direction. With an enthusiastic nod of agreement to the older Scout's statement, Outlaw's walk picked up in pacing very slightly. All the horses in the group were taller, so keeping up wouldn't be an issue as far as he could foresee. Still, every once in awhile his head shot up to look back around to make sure no one fell behind or went astray. Despite only having one visible eye, Outlaw was a very watchful stallion. Thankfully, everyone was within jumping distance or less from each other. That thought comforted the strangely marked stallion.
Khazada made a very good point indeed. A pack of Grass Beasts would likely be more difficult to chase off rather than any bear. Grass Beasts hunted as a group, and would be able to surround it's target. However if this bear was alone, it couldn't very well do that. Delvin was right, it would probably run off once it saw it was outnumbered. Outlaw knew he would if he were a bear facing five other creatures at once.
Gallow was right too, they didn't have all the time in the world to get this done. It wasn't an evening stroll and it wasn't a cakewalk on the beach. But thankfully they were really moving along at an extended walk now, and making great time. As they moved forward, however, the tracks began looking a bit heavier since they dug deeper in the powdery ash beneath their hooves. Curious...
This put Outlaw on guard even further. He made sure to keep his hoof falls absolutely silent and his movements fluid. At this point if someone didn't already know he was there, they wouldn't notice him. Especially in the dark. Thank the heavens for the stars, otherwise the team would be stranded in the pitch blackness. And without Night Vision or Light Manipulation, it would be impossible to see.
The oddly marked stallion swiveled his ears back, forth and all around in an attempt to listen for any sign of life other than themselves but so far came up with nothing. Surprising, yet not too surprising. Well, I guess that means we have a ways to go yet... Outlaw thought. But to keep the silence from sinking into the group, Outlaw decided to ask, "Do you ever think what it might be like to discover something new? Or do something no one has never done before? We haven't been on the Southern Isle for so long...who knows what could be around." Of course he meant this as something harmless and interesting...but he also knew that 'something new' could also be dangerous.

Khazada- Guard- Exiles
Khazada didn't seem to mind the drop in temperature and for once was thankful for being part draft as the cold didn't seem to bother her anyway. But even with how dark it was becoming, the mare only kept her attention to any noises behind her. Once or twice she'd stop, casting a quick look over her shoulder before having to lengthen her stride to catch back up to the others. Night made her more weary but for once she wasn't too spooked with the idea which surprised even herself. It would seem she hadn't been giving herself enough credit when it came to this.
"Depends on what you mean by discovering something new." Khazada replied, still holding the rear of their small party, however Outlaws idle question didn't miss her ears. "If it is something that benefits our herd then I'm all for it. However if it's something of ill will then I'd be content not to know." Maybe that wasn't the right answer but the words just tumbled off her tongue."I guess it would be...exciting if no harm came out of it." The draft mare finally concluded before flicking her ears behind her but still she didn't hear anything other then the groups muffled hoofbeats.
However even voicing her own thoughts on Outlaws questions, she couldn't help but to wonder what it would be like to do something no other equine had done. Not like I'm one to go taking risks like that...Rolling her eyes a bit at herself, she seemed to let that thought drift away from her main thoughts just as she swerved an ear behind her once more as it seemed she was staying on the alert just as the others.

Galloway - Scout - Exiles
As the pace picked up with the group, Gallow listened intently on his teammates and the surrounding landscape. The cool night air slid like silk across his spotted coat. His skin shivered slightly at the temperature drop. He hadn’t realized until now how close they were to actually helping the herd and doing what they were sent out to do. It gave him a nervous lope in his trot, but that thrill of adventure was starting to warm to him.
Gallow was glad Delvin was on board just as much as the others. He was a strong stallion and had a good head about him. They needed him in their group.
Outlaw lead the way, moving like a snake through grass. Gallow watched him and studied how he moved. He was intent on being just as silent and skillful in moving through the dark. You never know when being silent could save your life.
Suddenly Outlaw spoke up, the silence broken like ice. Then Khazada with her response. The question was a good one. It was a way to get to know each other. But the slight noise their voices put Gallow on edge; even though he couldn’t resist to answer.
“I have to admit it would be awesome to discover something knew. Whether it be dangerous or not. The thrill of seeing something no other horse has ever seen would be amazing. I’ve always wanted to just go off and explore new places. But there’s not much left to explore on the islands.” He said the last few words with a chuckle. “Hey don’t want to be the downer. But I think it might be best to keep a tad quieter.” He winced at himself for being the way he was. But he didn’t want someone to make a mistake. He was just making everyone realized what they were doing at the moment. He hoped he hadn't offended anyone.

Delvin - Scout - Exiles
Delvin began to feel a little more aware of himself and his surroundings as the temperature began to drop. The heat made you feel stifled and dull while the temperate breeze did just the opposite. His senses felt sharper and his mind more at ease now that he didn't have to think through a very real haze. The prints still tracked dutifully through the thick ash, leading further into one of the many burnt forests on the island. The team was all looking very capable as Delvin gave them each a quick glance. One might even say he was feeling optimistic.
"Mmmph," Delvin huffed at Outlaw's sudden question. "I agree with Khazada," he stated, "Ignorance is bliss; isn't that the sayin'," he continued. He was far past the coltish age of wanting to discover newer and better things. He'd would settle for what he knew and what kept himself and the herd alive.
Keeping an ear swiveled towards the spotted stallion who'd introduced himself as Galloway, Delvin kept one eye on the few tree trunks left standing as the other Scout explained his position on the manner. Just as he suggested the team take on a more silent approach, Delvin noticed a bit of fur caught on a piece of flaking bark. He breathed deeply, and finally a smell other than burnt debris was in the air, albeit very faintly. "Aye, look here," he said, flicking his tail at the few ash-colored strands. "Its scent is still hangin' about, though not very strongly. Means it's probably not in the immediate area, but it's been here none too long ago."
Strange, how the smell of a bear could be so warped by the ash in the air and on the ground. It almost didn't even smell like a bear anymore. The Scout briefly wondered what they themselves must smell like with all this ash around, but didn't dwell on it. They were on the right track; the bear was very much alive and it wasn't far now.

The Guard listened intently to the answers of his team, nodding his head to show he understood and agreed that they had a point. But Khazada and Delvin's words had brought him back to earth and even made him chuckle inwardly at his own silly questions. He had always been rather audacious, but that just made him sound like a colt who hadn't quite left the 'teenage angst' phase of his life. The herd was already in disarray what with being spread out over two Isles doing who knows what with who knows who. Not all the Exiles were helping clear the land, that was one thing Outlaw knew for certain. His closest friend, Prophet, hadn't said much when they talked together about their missions before they left. But Outlaw didn't ask any questions, as it wasn't his business. If the information had been shareable, the High Guard would have told the other oddly marked stallion what was going on. So the questions just bounced around in his head as they traveled, now silent once more. Galloway had recommended a hushed form of travel, which got him to shut his mouth rather quickly and continue listening to the world around him. Hoof falls muffled by the ashes, quiet breath, and his own thoughts. No noise came from him, except for shallow breath which was now billowing in front of his nostrils in the cool night. At this point he could easily be lost in a veil of darkness since he had stopped speaking, which was one of the reasons he started a conversation. But as suddenly as the silence ensued, Delvin's deep, slightly accented voice reached him once more bringing news of...a scent? Fur? Outlaw trotted to the draft Scout's side and once more lowered his head to catch a better whiff of the scent. After taking the scent in for a few breaths, a skeptical snort left his nostrils. He hadn't encountered this kind of a scent before...but then again it could've been distorted and blown around by the ashen wind at one point before they had reached where they were. Or this could've been how an Ash Bear smelled, for all he knew. But with the familiarization of this scent came more questions that the Guard just pushed to the back of his mind with the others that had been crowding it.
"We should pay even more attention from here on out then. If any of you sense anything that could be a lead, come nudge me. I'll go check it out quickly so you don't have to be careful about staying silent as the grave." he murmured just audibly enough for everyone on the team to understand before continuing with a swish of his obsidian colored tail. "But if I'm not back within those few minutes...Well I will be, so we need not worry about that. I won't engage anything and I won't get close." He nodded surely and raised a hoof to stomp, but caught himself right before his hoof hit the ground. His black tipped ears flicked around the group to see if they approved of his idea or had a better one themselves. But in the meantime he started following the trail of sharp tracks once more, the pace now at a jog since it was easier to follow with that new albeit faint scent that Delvin found on the fur.
I wonder what made those pieces of fur fall out...maybe the bear is old...or maybe...he lost a fight with something else. Lunar Ravens instantly came to mind, and he flicked his ears backwards, his eyes lifting up oh so slightly to be able to see a bit of the sky as well...Lunar Ravens would be the last thing they needed, especially with their eyes glittering in the starlight.

Khazada- Guard- Exiles
Giving her own nod of agreement at Gallow's suggestion to be quite, Khazada was careful where to place her hooves as not to make a lot of noise. Shaking her head to herself, she cast another look behind her though upon hearing Delvin's discovery, the draft mare turned her attention back to the draft scout. Putting both ears forward, she only listened to what was said, deciding to keep her thoughts to herself. The more time wore on, the more anxious she was beginning to feel as she just wanted to face this bear and get it over with before she lost her nerve. The idle conversations had taken her mind off the whole bear thing and she was already missing the distraction.
Remaining behind the others, Khazada increased her pace though the draft mare gave a annoyed snort as there were days she wished she wasn't near as big and bulky as she was. It seemed more of a challenge to stay quite and the dun mare found herself picking her feet up a bit higher as if that would help her hoof beats become quieter. But after a few minutes of her struggling, the mare shook her head and stopped, slowing her stride and instead just lengthened her stride as not to fall behind the group. This seemed to be the trick and Khazada smirked to herself as she always seemed to forget that with being such a big horse made her stride quite long as well.

Galloway - Scout - Exiles
Gallow’s heart sped up when Delvin said he had found a scent. It was a scrap of fur caught on the bark of a dying tree. Gallow snuck up and caught a whiff. His nostrils refused the scent causing him to snort. What was that scent? He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. It was really a scent he had never smelt before.
Outlaw suggested a plan shortly after having a sniff for himself. Gallow nodded his head in agreement. “I think that sounds like a solid plan to me. Especially with your ability.”
Gallow was beginning to feel the heavy seriousness that he always had when in a dangerous situation. They were coming up closer to the creature. Half of him wished they had a little longer and half of him wanted the ash bear to appear before them now so they could finish this and head on to the next creature. As the group moved forward, with Outlaw in the front, Gallow noticed how silent it was. It hadn’t occurred to him how quite a burned land would sound. The only thing that was audible was the occasional hoof fall and the steady breathing of his teammates.
Gallow’s mind was reaching to all the negative parts of him mind. He thought of every bad scenario that could happen. To counter those he thought of how he could fix them or resolve those bad scenarios. His mind was always exercising itself. But he didn’t want that at the moment, so he bent his thick neck towards the ground and studied the prints. He noticed that these prints and the ones ahead where deeper and more defined than the ones they had first happened upon.
Gallow raised his neck and quickly shard his discovery. “The tracks are more defined and heavier here. I think we’re right on its tail.”

Delvin - Scout - Exiles
The whole team moved with more urgency now that they were drawing near to the beast. Galloway pointed out how fresh the tracks were, and the underlying scent of bear was now clearly distinguishable under the ash. Wouldn't be long now.
"Before we come up on the beast, we need some kind of plan for dealin' with it," Delvin said in a hushed whisper, "When we spot it, I suggest we get in a line and face the creature. We're all fairly tall horses, so seein' us all side by side might discourage it from fightin'. Rear and make all the noise you can," he added, thinking back on the way bears do about the same thing when something wanders onto their territory. They stand on their hind legs and roar.
Five against one were favorable odds, and Delvin wasn't quite worried about their situation yet. As long as they stayed close together once they faced it, everything should work itself out just fine, and they could head back to the herd knowing everyone was a little bit safer.
"Outlaw, do you want to scout ahead a bit? We're close now," he pointed out. He didn't feel great about sending off one of their own by himself, but Outlaw seemed quite the capable sort, and his ability would only be extra insurance.

Amarante-Scout-Exiles
Amarante took steady steps, her Arabian heratiage helping her make a little less noise then she would if she were a full draft horse. She was apprehensive as the scent of the bear hung in the air now. She knew it wouldn't be long before they came upon it and she was more weary then scared. There was five of them though so she had hope that maybe it wouldn't even come down to a fight. She was worried something would go wrong, because you never knew what would happened. Outaw was going to go ahead, and check the area for the bear.
Amarante looked at the sky, she had heard of birds made of stars. She listened to Delvin's instructions, memorizing them to her mind. She wasn't nearly as tall as the others, but neither was Outlaw. Amarante wished she was faster at times like this. Maybe then she would be a better asset. She wondered if her future gift would be something to do with speed. "God I hope so, that or something like strength or the ability to talk to animals." she thought to herself. She wasn't ready for a gift yet, however, and would have to go with her own strength for now. 206
