Welcome to Exile Plot 002 : Defending your Homeland
Plot: Upon returning to your homeland in the South, it is immediately clear that your land has been claimed by wild beasts. The lands lay scarred with their movements, and tracks are easily followed across the Last Green Land and into the Ash Plains. Your task is to track them all down and reclaim the land that is rightfully yours.
Setting:
The sun is slowly setting over the ash plains, and the land is painted with deep, rich hues of crimson and marigold. Here on the Ash Plains, it seems like a foggy dust cloud has grown accustom to it's place over the horizon line, blocking some of the light, but is not thick enough to be dangerous to breathe.
Team Captain: Delvin (Bellasuem)
Team Members: Galloway Outlaw Amarante Khazada
Checkpoints Reached: None
Rules: 1. The Captain of the team must post first 2. A posting order must be kept as people enter the rp. 3. No god modding 4. React to the Checkpoints as they come! (If you don't know what a checkpoint is - don't worry - you'll know when they come!) 5. Communicate with your partners! 6. Have fun!!!!
How the posting order works:
Delvin must post first, then anyone can post after him. They can post back and forth until someone else posts, when someone else posts they must be entered into the posting order. For example: Ryder Fay Ryder Fay Jack Kasier Ryder Fay Jack Kasier Kayden
And so on. This means you do not have to wait for someone to join, but once they do their first post you must wait for them.

Delvin - Scout - Exiles
The air seemed to close in behind the group of returning horses the minute they crossed over the Landbridge, sealing them back on the island they had abandoned all those weeks ago. Honestly, the ashy air came as a relief to Delvin; no more would the herd have to worry about when the Bachelors would come 'round, demanding more payment for their 'hospitality.' But no more of that here; it was high time to start taking their destinies into their own hooves again, even if that meant rationing out what little food there was to be had on the island.
That meant clearing out all the unwelcome guests who slithered their way onto Exile territory during the herd's absence. The land was beginning to sort itself out, and signs of new life could be seen if one took the time to look, but the land had no say in who inhabited it. That would be up to them. The painted draught turned to face his companions, a mix of scouts and guards tasked by Khala to begin the eviction process, and swished his tail.
"It's gettin' to be about dusk," he began, "That means the wildlife will be nosin' about, no doubt about that. We don't need to be gettin' reckless, but be ready to face anythin' out here. We have an idea of whose moved in durin' our absence, but we can never be sure," he warned. As he scanned the horses in front of him, he was relieved that at least they all looked in relatively good physical health, thanks to their time spent on the Eastern Island. "Let's get movin'," he said, turning onto the ashy expanse that lay before them.

Outlaw - Guard - Exiles
As soon as the paint stallion set hoof on the Landbridge, he felt nearly all excitement drain from his body. A heaviness existed in the very air they breathed that gave Outlaw the impression that something wasn't right about this. He dismissed it with a shake of his mane as nothing more than just petty excessive nerves. This was just a recon mission, only to see what had happened on their island while the herd was away. Still, despite the ashes floating about the air causing the Guard to sneeze once in awhile, Outlaw was still a bit excited to gaze upon his home once more. Hopefully it was in better shape than when they left...the strangely marked stallion wasn't very keen on returning to Bachelor lands at all in the future. Food and water might be scarce, but that which he received on the Eastern Isle tasted sour in his mouth. This food, this water, this land...it was theirs once more and as an Exile he would guard and care for it always.
But as they continued in silence, Outlaw's mind began to wander. What had happened on the island? What could have happened? Well as long as there was land and even the smallest bit of sustenance there must be animal life. No horses, but...likely smaller animals that could survive off of what little there was thus far. And where smaller animals thrived, predators were there to thrive off of them. The leader of the patrol, another paint stallion named Delvin turned to face them and Outlaw halted to listen to what he had to say. Outlaw had seen Delvin around but hadn't worked or talked with him in the past. In fact, he only knew the other stallion's name from when Khala assigned him as Team Captain. He hadn't actually known the other horses in his patrol too well either, but this was work so that mattered not to the tall stallion. So far he hadn't been talkative because right now he had to listen to the area around them. Anything could happen since they had been away so long and he had to be on his toes. There was no wind, no shift in the nonexistent breeze, so Outlaw resembled a stone statue as he listened. After nodding his agreement with Delvin's small pre-mission speech, Outlaw's shoulders rose and fell with a sigh of preparation. He had been waiting for this moment since they moved onto the Eastern Isle, and it was finally here. The Guard's brown eyes flashed with determination and he pawed the ground a few times, showing that he was anxious to get moving. The slowly setting sun didn't bother him as they began their first journey back onto their healing land.

Khazada-Guard-Exiles
Khazada felt her own excitement began to grow when she finally was able to step back on the eastern isle. The mare gave a snort, not seeming so fond of the thick, ashy air that entered her lungs. Shaking her head some more and throwing her forelock into her eyes, blocking her sight for a brief moment, Khazada stopped tossing her head just as her ears pricked forward as she needed to focus on what was around her then her mane.
Not being able to help herself, the draft mare gave each member of their small group a quick look over, trying to remember who was who. None of the other horses were familiar to her but Khazada felt more at ease having other experienced horses in her group.
Though upon the painted draft she was sure was call 'Delvin', Khazada paused in her stride, listening to the stallion's words. A slight frown found it's way on her equine face as she cast another quick look around them. Hopefully whatever had taken residence in their home would be quite easy to drive out. It couldn't be worse then having to live among the bachelors, could it?
Letting those thoughts go, she however flicked an ear in paint stallion's direction upon seeing him paw the ground a few times. Outlaw was his name she was sure, seeing his odd markings. She was anxious herself but she only bobbed her head a few times, of course causing her forelock to cover her eyes again. Snorting more to herself, she let it be as she had other things to worry about then that.

Amarante - Scout - Exiles
The tall thick dappled mare looked around her, she wasn't born in the exile herd so she wasn't familiar with these lands. She had heard from the other Exiles of the fire that had drove them out of the lands though. She sneezed from the ash still in the air, shaking her head. She was more use to the clear air of the eastern island. She looked at her companions, wondering what dangers awaited them. She was unfamiliar with most of them, being fairly new to the heard. She hoped though the this missions would help her get to know each other better. She hoped she would prove herself to her new herd.
She noted the stallion ahead one her, he was white with unusual black markings. She recalled that his name was Outlaw, she wasn't sure how she felt about him yet as she had just met him. She looked at the only other mare in her group. She didn't know the mare but recalled her being called Kahzada, she briefly wondered if they could become friends. Her gaze moved on to the draft stallion that was their group leader. His name was Delvin, and he looked strong. She listened to their mission, they would be cleaning out any critters that had moved in.
She looked at the land bridge under her feet, pawing it with her hoof. It was the first time she had be on one in a long time. She felt nervous on it, last time she had been exiled for walking on one. But this time she would not, since it was a mission. She hoped not at least, she didn't want to loose her new herd and friends. She wondered what would happen after this. She focus ahead on the party not wanting to be left alone, who knew what was here. (311 word count)

Galloway - Scout - Exiles
Gallow looked around. His heavy mane barely moved in the dead weight of the air. Smoke lay heavy around him making it hard for him to take a deep breath. He hadn’t been on the isle when it went up in flames and he couldn’t even begin to understand the fear that must have come with the experience.
His nerves were rattled from the task that his team and himself were put up too. Gallow was a bigger stallion being part Friesian and he knew his stature could scare some horses but the creatures that had taken the Exile’s old herd grounds? He wasn’t so sure.
Ahead of him was the teams leader; Delvin. He seemed to be a very confident stallion and his age helped put Gallow’s mind at rest. With age comes wisdom.
The rest of the horses who were part of the carefully chosen team seemed just as able and confident. Gallow hadn’t known them before this quest, so at the moment he was unsure of their capabilities or personalities. Gallow himself was an observer. He stood back and listened and watched. He would always be there when needed. He could pride himself in that.
Suddenly Delvin had slowed to a stop. He turned and faced the group, giving a small opening speech to the adventure that was just before them. Delvin’s word’s stood stark against Gallow’s mind. He was right. The sun was starting to set setting the world ablaze. Dark shadows were stretching and thoughts of what hid in them danced in Gallow’s mind.
Whatever comes I’ll take it in stride, Gallow said to himself, preparing himself for whatever was out there.

Delvin - Scout - Exiles
Delvin's steps barely made a sound as he padded through the grey ash, sending little billows of the nasty stuff into the air with every movement the group made. It was a windless evening, which would make things a bit easier on the team. Delvin cast a glance over his shoulder, and as he suspected there was a clear path through the ash winding out from behind them. "Keep an eye out for any paths in the ash, or even any abundance of the stuff in the air," he told his team, "It shouldn't be hard to find the critters out here with all this soot. And the fires didn't leave much cover for them to hide in, either."
The stallion held no fear nor anxiousness regarding their task, but he did worry for the herd. While the horses he was with seemed like a sturdy bunch, anything could happen if he were to be honest, and not just in regards to the predators who moved in. He used to know the island almost as well as he knew himself, but it barely even looked like the same island he had grown up on now. All the earthy greens and vibrant plant life were reduced to washed out greys and blacks, and the air was still rank with the smell of destruction. It was almost useless to scent the air for any other animals.
As his mind lingered on his team, Delvin decided it would be best to introduce himself. He didn't know any of these horses personally, though that wasn't saying much coming from him. He gave a snort, trying to dislodge the ash that seemed insistent on settling in his nostrils. "I'm Delvin, in case any of you were wonderin'," he stated. It wasn't in the stallion's nature to be optimistic about much, but he figured the group could use a bit of hope since they came back to find their home not much better off than how they initially left it. "It may look dreadful, but once we're done out here we can head back to The Last Green Land with the rest of the herd."

When Outlaw's hooves reached the awaiting powdery ash on the ground of their home away from The Last Green Land, his tail visibly drooped a bit. The vast majority of the Southern Isle was still covered in the dirty grayness that the herd had left when they fled to the Eastern Isle. The stallion wasn't keen on getting his white coat soiled by kicked up ash (though he knew in the back of his mind that it was basically inevitable) so he began walking closer to Delvin's side rather than behind him and made sure to trod lightly across this area.
Giving the Scout in the lead a nod of understanding, Outlaw lowered his romanized head closer to the ground. This would facilitate seeing any tracks in the ash. He wasn't half bad at tracking under normal conditions, but these obviously weren't normal. There were no plants or grasses to hold a scent, which made the process of searching that much harder for him. Delvin's right...at least whatever's here can't hide. There are no hiding places left, and their tracks would be visible. He thought to himself. The Guard was always optimistic and once he was at least a little bit sure that the team's safety was more affirmed, he would try to socialize with them and cheer them up. Everyone looked so stone faced, he'd noticed. Hearing Delvin's introduction, the strangely marked stallion lifted his head and offered a friendly grin.
"My name's Outlaw. Nice to meet you Delvin." His voice rang out clearly in the desolate space around them, and with a backwards flick of his ears he was glad that he hadn't been at his normal speaking volume. With that said, Outlaw turned his head back towards the rest of his team with his black tipped ears perked forwards in interest and an inviting smile playing across his lips. "I'm sorry but I'm not entirely sure of all your names and I don't know if you all know each other so...do you mind introducing yourselves too?"
Outlaw agreed with Delvin silently as his soft brown gaze swept the land around them once more. This land wasn't healthy at all yet, but with time and care it would be. That's how most things worked. Horses, land, relationships...time and care heal all wounds. Now whether or not scars are left behind is a completely different animal. After the land regrows...will there be some things that just can't be fixed? He thought introspectively with a swish of his tail as he lowered his head once more to continue searching for tracks.
As suddenly as the ashen air hit him when the team set foot on the Southern Isle, a set of tracks almost leapt out of the ashes into Outlaw's face. The Guard halted next to them, raised his head and called out just loud enough for his team to hear. "Hey guys! I found something. Come take a look!" The pale stallion pawed lightly at the ground next to the clear set of tracks and continued, "We should follow them to clear out whatever sorry creature made them, right?" Outlaw inquired towards Delvin.

Khazada- Guard- Exiles
Seeming more focused on everything around her, Khazada kept flicking her ears back and forth though she couldn't help to snort here then there. Shaking her head some more, she once more turned her attention to the others horses though her amethyst gaze lingered on Delvin before the draft mare bobbed her head. Hopefully it would be as easy as the older horse made it sound. Though the more Khazada tired to ponder what they could be facing, her excitement began to fade as reality sank in.
Hearing both Delvin and Outlaw give their short introductions, the draft mare thought it was about time she introduce herself. "Khazada is my name." She arched her neck at bit, trying to sound quite sure of herself though Khazada gave a small frustrated roll of her eyes when her tone was softer then she would have liked. However feeling she said enough, Khazada turned her attention back to the ground though all she saw was ash.
Hopefully Delvin was right, that there land would heal. It didn't look like much now and honestly this was not the same land she grew up in. Khazada couldn't help her own doubts though it had to heal. There was no way she'd want to return back to the eastern isle. They had to get their home back. It was this thought that gave the mare an extra boost of determination as she felt her body tense up. No, she'd be ready for whatever they had to drive out from there home.
Though hearing Outlaw, Khazada once more snapped herself out of her thoughts before her ears shot forward. Taking a few cautious steps and stopping near the oddly marked stallion, she too took notice the the distinctive tracks that Outlaw found. "Do we know what made them though?" The dun mare lifted her head, glancing at the others.

Amarante - Scout - Exiles
Amarante's ears twitched as she listened for sounds of animals around them, she couldn't smell anything through the ash so she hoped that she would hear anything coming before it go there. This land was nothing like east island, it was desolate and bare of greens. Everything, but the horse, appears to be a shade of grey. She shook her head, shaking ash out of the bottom of her mane. It couldn't be helped as her mane and tail where so long. She held her head a bit higher trying to keep it off the ground. It was times like these when she wish she had shortened her mane and tail. They didn't get in the way, but in ash like this they were getting filthy. She sighed to herself and ignored it, there was nothing that she could do about it right now.
She upped her head when she heard the introducing themselves, and noted each of their names. She decided she should introduce herself as well. "I am Amarante," she said in a assured toned. lifting her head a bit more. She continued plodding along till Outlaw found the tacks. She came up beside them and peered down at them. 'Whatever made these tracks was big.' She thought to herself with a shiver. (218)

Gallow - Scout - Exiles
This ash was endless, Gallow noted. He could barely remember what the land had looked like before this. His body ached for the color green. A shiver ran down his flanks. The herd would just have to keep mending the broken land in order to get any semblance of it’s past back.
Trying to keep those more desolate thoughts hidden and quiet in his mind, Gallow’s spotted ears perked up as Delvin told the group to keep their eyes open for tracks in the ash. As Gallow looked down and around he saw the evident tracks they were leading behind them. It was inevitable they would stumble upon one of the creatures lurking here. A small thought flitted in Gallow’s mind. What if something followed us?
Before the thought could manifest itself into something bigger Delvin continued to informally introduce himself to the small group. He also gave a small pep talk to rally up the groups spirits. It was comforting to know that their captain was just as equally hopeful. Gallow also tried to keep things in the positive, even though his negative side was always just below the surface.
The strangely marked white and black paint stallion proceeded to introduce himself next. His name was Outlaw and he had confidence that could kill. That was always good. Gallow knew he could count on this stallion in a fight.
The larger dun mare’s name was Khazada. She came off a little shy and timid but he could tell she was willing to give her best in anything that came her way.
The other mare, a bay, was named Amarante. Gallow could tell her mane and tail were getting in her way, but the way she tried to soldier through it told him she was a fighter.
Having heard everyone else’s introductions Gallow proceeded to follow suit.
“I’m Galloway, but you can call me Gallow as well.”
Almost as soon as Gallow had said his name Outlaw proclaimed the discovery of tracks. Gallow picked up his ambling walk and trotted up to the group. Sure enough there were tracks of beast he couldn’t quite name. He raised his head and looked out towards the direction they went in. Wherever they went it was far and the sky was turning a desaturated orange as the sun hit the horizon. Soon it would be night.
“It’s going to be night soon,” was all Gallow could say. He didn’t really want to face this thing in the middle of the night on terrain they weren’t so sure of. But he also didn’t want whatever it was to keep making a home here. It was up to their Captain at this point.

Delvin - Scout - Exiles
Delvin kept an ear swiveled back as he listened to his companion's introductions. As he suspected, he didn't know any of them, but from the way they presented themselves they didn't seem to know one another very well either. Even though they all came from the same herd, it wasn't too surprising. These past months, things had been more than chaotic, what with the fires, the migration, the Bachelors, and now the return home to find the Southern Island taken over by beasts.
The shadows were growing longer as the sun continued its descent, and the team plodded along resolutely until the stallion Outlaw proclaimed a discovery. Delvin and the others crowded around, all regarding the set of tracks with mixed emotions. They were far too large to be Grass Beasts, and didn't look like cat tracks either. Delvin lifted his head and looked around, though the grey landscape revealed nothing more to him except the ominous trail of tracks disappearing through a copse of burnt trees.
The painted bay grunted in acknowledgement as Galloway pointed out the hour. It would be dangerous to go wandering through the scorched forest now, but this was when the predators would be most active. Khala sent them out just before dusk for a reason, after all.
"I hate to be the one to say it, but these look like bear tracks," he stated, putting his own large hoof next to the clawed print for comparison. "No cougar has prints this big, or claws like this," he continued. Delvin was glad now that Khala had sent them out in a group of five; bears were no trifling matter. "I understand you all might have some trepidation about this, but the sooner we drive these beasts out, the sooner we can all rest easy knowin' we've got some safety measures in place again."
Delvin paused a moment and shook his mane out, clearing some of the ash from his coat, and sighed deeply, "We'll decide as a group, though, since we'll all need to be at our best if we plan on doin' this right."

The Guard stamped each name with a face beside it into his memory, for he indeed didn't know these horses. Well, not yet. This mission would change that for sure as far as he was concerned. Should this come to a fight to chase out an occupant of their land, Outlaw wouldn't just forget it or let it go. No. If you fought with him, that made you his friend in his own mind. Or at the very least an acquaintance if they were really dead set against socializing or having a bit of stress relieving fun. Khazada, Amarante, Galloway and of course Delvin. Not hard to remember, their names were so unique as were their markings and manes. The pale stallion would have no problem remembering.
Outlaw kept his head close to the tracks and took a dainty breath in to try to catch a hope of a scent of the creature that left these, but like he'd suspected all he ended up with was a dirty nose. A rush of air shot through his nostrils in the form of a snort to clear them as he listened to Delvin rooting out what could've created these strange prints in the ash. When his white spotted team member pointed out how low the sun was getting, the strangely marked stallion lifted his head and gazed off towards the horizon where the sun was sinking. The sky was stained red in the west where the sun was setting, and was already black in the east. Fear was far from clutching onto Outlaw's heart, for he rather enjoyed the darkness of night. Despite popular opinion, he felt safer and more comfortable wrapped in the cool, dark satin air after sundown. But with a quick glance around his group, he could tell that the other horses didn't feel exactly the same way. However there was a perfectly viable reason to be on edge, lots of predators were nocturnal. But to chase them out, they had to be awake, right?
As Delvin continued speaking and placed his hoof beside one of the tracks, Outlaw's ears flicked backwards. His voice didn't sound shaken or nervous when he spoke, but confident and almost thoughtful. "You're right, Delvin...But there's so little here it would be difficult for one let alone a few Ash Bears to survive. They're big, so they need to eat more meat than a Grass Beast or Cougar. Maybe there's a more recovered area of the Isle that supports life other than The Last Green Land and that's where it's getting it's food." The Guard knew the likelihood of this being true was very little, but it was best to stay optimistic and keep his team's spirits as high as possible. "I'm sure Khala and the herd would be pleased if we were to return with news of another grazing ground."
Upon Delvin giving them the go to decide as a group, Outlaw was the first to put his opinion out in the open. His warm brown eye flashed with an inspiring light of determination as he spoke. "I think we should follow the tracks take everything in stride. After all, Khala chose us for this mission because she thought we would be capable of handling something like this. Plus, we've got each other's backs and whatever Bear is out there wouldn't be thick enough to choose a fight five to one. It would probably just run away when it saw us." To emphasize his next words, he stepped forward and lowered his head for a moment before making eye contact once more, a grin on his face. "And as a Guard I give you my word that I will protect you should we end up in conflict. What do you say?" Outlaw asked as he straightened up once more, eye flicking between his teammates and ready to listen to whatever they wanted to contribute to the conversation.

Khazada- Guard- Exiles
A bear? Of course it's a bear...Khazada gave a small shake of her head, throwing her forelock into her eyes. She had never faced a bear before so this would be a whole new thing for the dun draft mare. However she gave another glance at the other horses in their party of five and felt more at ease as with all of them, that bear shouldn't be too much of a problem, or at least she hoped so.
Pricking her ears forward, she listened to Delvin, though upon hearing Outlaw bring up the whole idea of another part of the isle that could be grazing ground, Khazada's ears pricked forward. Just like the oddly marked stallion, she was sure that wouldn't be the case but the whole idea made her feel more hopeful. maybe they'd actually have something go in their favor, instead of the string of bad luck their herd had experienced since the fires.
After hearing Outlaw voice his thoughts of what he thought the group should do, Khazada decided to include her own. "I second the decision to keep going. As much as I don't fancy treading through the dark, I will if that means we chase out whatever bears, grass beasts, or other creatures from our home. The sooner we do, the sooner we can call this place home again." The mare paused as she looked from each member of the group, lifting her head. "And I too will do whatever I can to protect the lot of you." Khazada glanced briefly at Outlaw as he wasn't the only guard in this group and Khazada may not be near experienced as the oddly marked stallion was, but she would do everything in her power to help defend their group if or when they did face such a conflict.
