The rats wouldn't stop coming. They were on all sides he was sure. Far more than they could fight off, not at this rate. The ugly creatures were hungry and it was very obvious by their flying attacks and locking jaws around tendons that they were not going to give up any time soon. They weren't going to be able to just fight the things off. They were too hungry to care about injuries. It was either kill every single one of them or get the hell out of here. But where? They couldn't just leave the city and the protection it offered from the war and fighting outside. Running into the unknown city didn't sound very wise either. There were too many things that they could run into, like other rats or even cougars... or dead ends. He wasn't liking either of the options at the moment, but they certainly couldn't stand here. He pinned his ears, kicking off another rat as he suddenly lashed around, grabbing one as it lunged for Iscah and threw it out into the fray of other grey monsters.
It was then that he saw the flash of bright colors. Fire. For once he actually appreciated the presence of the burning flames. They were quite useful when not being used on yourself. His ears fell back when Evalyn's voice demanded for them to get out of here. Shortly after another voice called out his name, agreeing with the mare's suggestion. I know! He mentally screamed. For a moment he was tempted to give in to panic and fear and just give up, accepting that there wasn't anything he could do for the group of mares he'd been entrusted with... but that thought only lasted mere seconds. No, he wouldn't give up. He'd been given a job. Suddenly getting an idea he reared up, lunging forward as he trampled past several rats, not bothering to pay much mind to the teeth that jumped up at his now running legs. "Quick, the church!" He ordered. It was only a few blocks away, they knew how to get there, and it had doors, doors that could be closed and used for protection from the swarm of hungry rats. If nothing else it would give them time to think things through and figure out a better plan. As far as he could see, running blindly was just going to get them all killed. He kept at a slow pace so that the mares could keep up with him. Kicking and bucking as he did to clear a path of sorts between the swarming creatures so they could get through the wave and into the clearing. "Everyone!" He added. He didn't like the Exiles much at all... in fact he despised them and their cowardice, but he could use them. The more horses they had the more chance they would all have of surviving. Power in numbers, it was the one thing he was sure of at this moment.

Syria || Exile Scout || Mare
Teeth bared as the speckled mare stomped down on the rats, eyes narrowed as anger grasped her like a choke chain. Her desire to protect her herd boiled within her blood. Eyes glanced to the others watching them struggle with the rats as the pesky rodents did all the could to feed their empty bellies even if it meant death in the end. Nostrils flared as she winced in pain as she felt the sharp bites in her flesh. How they feasted so quickly on the blood that dripped from her. Death. Rats would chew them to the bone, to the point they would all worn out. Soon standing would be a chore, one by one they would all drop down. Being eaten alive by the mongrels, that is if they stayed and fight.
Ears perked up as she looked over the others once more as she stomped about crushing the rodents below her. They bachelors spoke of getting out of here, but as to where? Thats when the leader of them spoke of a church, Syria watched him as he cleared a path, and her ears pinned down a bit, a look of slight envy and frustration showed a bit in her eyes. Though she perked up as he mentioned to having everyone follow suit. Eyes looked to Prophet their own leader, but Syria seemed like at the moment this was the best choice. "We best keep up with them." she remarked to her fellow comrades. "We don't want to get left in the dust." Another wince of pain showed on her face as the rats dared to crawl up her back legs nipping at her flesh constantly. Syria shook her body flinging them off of her, and she soon began to follow suit of the others. They all needed to get out here and fast.

Salvatore | Stallion | Exile Guard
"Quick, the church! Everyone!"
Shit. This was not about to get any better, was it? The Exile guard let out a shrill whinny as more rats began to gnaw at his pasterns. He looked down with burning eyes, and from what he could see between his bloodied socks was that the pests had nearly chewed right to the bone. With the strength he still had in his legs, Salvatore flailed his limbs, sending three rats flying ten feet into the air before crashing down with a thud directly in front of him. "Mother-" he cursed before raising his head to trample the rats, right when a particularly large one launched itself at his face. Salvatore bellowed as he reared onto his back legs, the rat digging its claws to his nose before climbing up his face, hissing menacingly. This can't be happening.
Without hesitation he followed suit behind the bachelors and the rest of his own herd fleeing for the church, with the rat still clinging to him in such a way that he could no longer see where he was going. At this point, Salvatore was losing so much blood that he could no longer keep a steady pace behind the others, and he began to weep quietly from the pain at his ankles and where the rat's claws scraped at his skull. He couldn't even shake it off for fear that his face may get torn clean off. "Someone..." he pleaded. "someone - please... get this thing off... of me..." he began to beg, right before the rat opened its jaw and lunged at the guard's right eye.

Aragon heard the grey bachelor mare shriek and hide behind the only stallion with the group. The little roan's ears laid flat against her head so much they looked as if they were attached to her skull. She let out a surprised yelp and jumped up in the air from terror of the rat lunging at her.
Somehow in the chaos she heard the bachelor leader say "Quick, the church! Everyone!" She didn't even hesitate before getting ready to bolt off after them but stopped seeing Salvatore needed help. "Go!" She shouted to the others and hurried to her new friend in need. She turned to face him, her nose wrinkled in disgust. She couldn't use her wind to help him. 'Unicorns help me!' She thought and reached foreword. She clamped her jaws down on the rat, tight enough the warm and salty taste of blood flooded her mouth. She was ready to puke now as the rat's claws let go of his face. She shook the rat, from side to side and threw it back into the pack. "Time to run!" she said to Salvatore and bolted off, spitting as she did trying to get the rat blood out from her mouth. She felt the blood slipping down her chin which only made her run faster, wanting to stop to clean the blood off. She nearly collided with the back end of Syria as she ran. Muttering a quick "Sorry." under her breath she sped past her and ran straight to the church.

Quick, the church! Everyone!
A quick thanks was sent to the unicorns that Kyanos actually listened to her, before she saw him start to clear a path leading back towards the old building. Without any hesitation, Evalynn willed two cords of flame to follow behind Kyanos, outlining their path, and keeping rats from cutting them off. She watched as one of the Exile mares followed quickly behind Kyanos, and was careful to keep her flames away from the mare.
She dug her hooves into the ground, deciding she was to be the last horse to go. She could flank the group and make sure to keep as many of the rats off of them as possible. She didn't know what any of the Exiles were ranked as, but the mares she was with could not fight these vermin. Adrenaline coursed through Evalynn's veins, and she let out a loud whinny.
"Get going! I can hold off as much of the swarm until you guys get closer to the church! I'll follow afterwards!" she looked at Kyanos as she spoke the last part. Escape was not on her list of priorities, not in the city, especially not with this many rats.
As she turned around, she saw one of the Exile stallions behind the rest, his legs a bloody, terrible mess. She saw a giant rat attacking his face, it's dirty claws cutting into his flesh.
Someone...
She heard him cry out, and she lunged forward immediately, as she saw the rat scuttle towards his eye, it's dirty yellow teeth gleaming. Evalynn stretched her neck out, muscles straining as she tried to reach the rat before it dug into the stallions' eye. She wasn't going to make it in time, she was too far away, and it was too close to him for her to use her fire! But as she watched, she saw that a mare was closer, and was able to snatch the rat off of his face before she could. A brief flash of relief washed over her before she watched the mare turn and follow behind the appaloosa mare.
Without stopping to see if the stallion was okay, Evalynn let another surge of flame out, watching as a dozen rats around them went up in a foul-smelling blaze. "Go!" she dug into the cobbled ground and pushed her shoulder into the stallions flank, urging him to follow the Kyanos to safety.

{ Akira | Slave Brood } "Quick, the church! Everyone!"
Akira didn't have to be told twice. All that pent up energy from her earlier emotional explosion was re-fueled by a surge of adrenaline as her flight response kicked in. Leaping forward, she cringed as she dove into the hoard of rats blocking her path, sending several flying as her sooty black legs picked up speed. Thankfully she'd inherited her mother's speed and agility as she swiftly made her way through the wreckage, gliding over fallen traffic poles and ducking beneath remnants of destroyed overpasses. Gritting her teeth, her legs felt like they were on fire from all the open wounds. The thick, hot red liquid oozed from every gash, scratch, and bite mark but she pressed forward, knowing if she stopped now, she would never get going again. She could only hope at this point that Mercedes had fled with the gray mare and that she was alright. Everything was happening so fast...it was all a blur of tangled bodies, teeth, claws, and orange fire. Her ears rung with the screams of others and the shrieks of the deadly rats. It was her worst nightmare come true...
As she was one of the first to take off, she caught up to Kyanos fairly quickly, her sweaty golden neck pumping back and forth as she gave it all she had. There! She could see it! The cathedral's magnificent steeple rose up in the distance, growing closer at a quick pace. They were going to make it! It seemed like they were finally gaining ground when a shrill scream came from her lungs as a rat launched itself from the roof of a building directly onto her rump, digging its fangs into her withers and its dirty claws into her smooth golden hide. Fumbling, Akira fell to one knee as her back legs bucked in a feeble attempt to knock the vermin off, though unsuccessfully. After righting herself and several more failed attempts, she squealed again as it tore a chunk of flesh. "Kyanos!!" she called out in a instinctual cry, pure fear taking over and forcing a desperate cry for help.

His legs were by now covered in blood as he ran, both of his own and of the rats'. He continued to clear a path the best that he could though, trying to protect the group from the front. His ears flicked back when he noticed continuous flashes of orange light - Evalyne. It was funny how much he had despised the fact she had come along while now he couldn't be more grateful for her presence. Of all the mares he had with him, she was a fighter, she could actually help protect them all, and she knew what she was doing. He gave a slight nod when she announced that she would take up the rear. He wouldn't ask for it any other way. With him in the front and her in the back, they could make it, he was sure. The thought of her trying to escape didn't even cross his mind, it wasn't a concern at this moment and time and honestly he found that below her to run at a time like this.
They were almost there! Even his blurred vision could see the tall, welcoming steeple of the church ahead, reaching out to them above all of the other crumbling buildings. Just a little farther and they would be safe. Suddenly he heard a frightened screech calling out his name. He had no time to be surprised that anyone would call for him for help as he slid to a stop to see Akira attempting to stumble to her hooves, a large blurry bump on her haunches. His hooves skid on the hard ground as he turned around, running to her side he grabbed the thing's head without a moment's hesitation. Biting down hard he waited three seconds for it to let go and then launched it as far away as he could throw. A great thump sounded as it smashed into a building not far off. His attention was now on the mare though as he stood beside her, offering his shoulder as stability to stand. "Go!" He demanded, shoving her carefully but firmly all the same with his muzzle, herding her to the entrance of the church. At the doors he stopped, waiting for everyone else to get in while he fought off the rats that he could, preventing them from swarming into the building that was to be their sanctuary. "Quickly! Everyone, get in now!" He ordered loudly. His usually soft, broken, crackled old voice was now strong and pure, the kind of voice you'd expect a drill Sargent to yell out.

Syria || Exile Scout || Mare
Syria jumped a bit as she felt the presence of another, thankfully quick footing let her stay moving forward. Ears perked up a bit as Aragon muttered a quick sorry to her. Syria smiled and nodded faintly to her, showing she was nother bother at all. Though she watched the mare zip ahead and off into the church. Sanctuary. Syria sighed with relief and delight, they were all going to make it. Syria's heart leapt with joy as she watched other zip in and noticed how Evalynn stayed back throwing fire to the rats, though before turning her attention back at the church she noticed Salvator struggling. Ears pinned back as she let out a deep snort, no way was she going to leave anyone behind, it was never her style anyways. The speckled mare moved to Salvator's side offering him her protection as well as something to lean on if he needed it.
"Hey we got this Salvator. We are nearly to the church." she reassured the stallion. Syria kicked out trying her best to make sure Salvator stayed rodent free till they got the church. Worry consumed her if he went down on the ground, would she be enough to help him up? Syria shook her head, it was best not to dwell on such things. With a few stomps and kicks she flung and crushed the vermin that dared to gnaw at the pair, if anything she would gnaw them back. An eye for an eye right? All her mind could focus on was protecting Salvator, making sure he would return home safely. Eyes looked up as she spotted the others make it into the church and she sighed with relief, just a few more horses and they would all be good to go. They would be safe and they could rest and breath and check on wounds and everything else. It was the hope that seemed to build a fire within Syria, a fire that kept her alive and willing to keep going even if things looked bad.

Rats nipped at her heels. She screamed and tossed her head, kicking out at the rats. There was a loud crunching noise as she brought her hooves down on one rat, crushing the vermin's skull. The bite marks on her heels stung. Everyone was panicking. She heard Kyanos yell for everyone to head to the church and immediately she took off towards it. She ran like a bat out of hell, heart pounding in her chest. The rats were surprisingly quick, a few of them pulling in pursuit as she ran. But with all of the others running crazily about, they were soon diverted onto a more easier target to attack. Iscah ran into the welcoming doors of the church. She skidded to halt once inside and turned around, looking at the others as they came running inside the sanctuary. Seemed the others had gotten the worst injuries compared to the few bites she had gotten. There was a frown on her lips where her usual smile would be. That was a close call, she thought to herself and shudder at the thought of what could have happened if she had stayed around any longer. She was thankful no one was seriously injured.

Shiya | Exile Scout | Mare
“Rats”
If there was one thing Shiya knew at this very moment, it was that she hated rats. Maybe even more than grassbeasts. They were smaller, moved in greater groups and were harder to hit or avoid. Hearing Addie’s voice, Shiya kept as close as she could to the mare. Body trembled with the sudden surge of adrenaline as she frantically stamped any rats that dare come near her. She wanted to flee, to run for her life, to get away from the danger. Just as the feral her would do. No, she was not her anymore. She was different to the mare she once was.
However as she caught a flash of orange from the corner of her eye, her mind plunged her to the dreaded summer. The summer the Southern Isle burned to the ground and left its scar on her. Terror seized her heart and mind at the sight of the burning monster. Voices drowned in her fear and the vermin were forgotten. That is until several bit her legs and with a terrified shrill, she ran. And ran like the wind she did.
Instinct kept her close to the others and as far away from the flames as possible. Yet when it flashed into her line of sight again, fear clung to her gift over the air and blew the fire away from her. “Keep it away, keep it away,” she muttered fitfully under her breath, unaware if the wind blew the flames out or amongst the rats.
“Quick! Everyone, get in now!.”
She madly followed the voice and whoever was ahead of her, not stopping for anyone, and sprinted her way through the doors and into their, hopefully, safe place. Forced to skid to a skittish stop to avoid collision, Shiya was barely aware she had lost sight of Addie in her mad dash before she frantically sprung around to search for her in amongst this chaos.

Aragon went crashing into the church, literally. She ran right past the bachelor stallion at the door and nearly ran into the bench right inside the makeshift sanctuary and another mare in the church. she turned around instantly and trotted in place as she watched her friends and the other bachelors make it to the entrance. Seeing more rats trying to scurry closer where the fire wasn't, clacking their teeth and staring at the horses hungrily with their beady red eyes. She willed the wind to push back the rats and act like a wall shoving them back only a few paces.
As her adrenaline levels started to fall the little roan realized suddenly that she had been bit repeatedly all over her legs. "Stupid rats." She whined. As the others rushed in she saw Syria and Salvatore still fighting their way in. She stepped out side the doors and shouted "C'mon! You got it!" Now the fire had cleared enough rats away, they would be able to make it inside, hopefully with no problems. The small mare breathed a sigh of relief before stepping out of everyone's way and finding a decent place to wait at. Using her power had drained the energy form her. All she longed for now was food, water, and a safe place to sleep at. But that was impossible at the moment.

[ Prophet | Exile High Guard | Stallion ]
The... The Church? Being unfamiliar with this part of the Bachelor island, Prophet didn't quite know where that was. Salvatore. He had heard one of his guards call for help. A call he couldn't ignore. Prophet wheeled, and found that a Syria along with a pintaloosa mare had aided him, thankfully. He went to them, because he wanted to be sure they made it, and perhaps the mare could guide them to the Church. "Just a little further Salvatore, hang in there. We've got you." He urged the stallion on, giving a thankful look to the brave mare as they raced on to what would hopefully be safety... but the more he looked at her, the more familiar she became. Evalynn? He could scarcely believe his eyes.
However, he couldn't get a question out before they had reached the church. Aragon was there, but he hadn't seen Addie or Shiya yet. Damn it. I hope they're safe inside... Prophet frantically looked around, urging Salvatore and Evalynn into the safety of the church before entering himself and taking a head count. "Exiles, sound off." He called, glancing over each head several times, counting each face. He didn't get a good count of the Bachelor group they'd been entwined with, which made him more nervous. What if someone out there needed help? Prophet made a note to keep a calm head, and the calmness would hopefully spread.

[Adhara//Exile Scout//Mare]
Addie watched as Shiya lept over a pair of rats and starting running toward the church behind the rest of their party. Good. She thought, relived that her young friend was safe. Not seeing Mercedes anywhere nearby, the grulla appaloosa turned to follow them, only to find herself surrounded. The hairy creatures stared up at her, their gleaming eyes full of ravenous hunger. Panic began to set in as the mare looked for a way around them, but to her dismay, they continued to close in on her, backing her into an old alley way. "Someone! Anyone! HELP!" She screamed, her voice catching in her throat. She could only hope one of the horses in the church could hear her pleas.
She tried to keep some distance between her and the hairy beasts, but even that proved to be an almost impossible task. Adhara felt her rump hit a brick wall as the rats continued to converge on her. Adrenaline began pumping through her veins as she looked around for an escape, the reality of her situation starting to overwhelm her. 'This could easily be the end...' She thought, lashing out as one of the rodents lunged at her chest. Catching the creature in her teeth, she tossed it into the fray, only to be attacked by two more. She continued to fight them off, but with each attack, Adhara found herself slipping up more and more as gaps in her defensive became obvious. Teeth tore into the soft flesh of her underbelly and claws dug their way into the skin of her legs. Pain shot through the mare's entire being, causing her to cry out in agony. Surely someone would come to her aid...

As Evalynn pushed the stallion towards the church, she watched as Prophet came to help his herd member. Placing herself on the opposite side of Prophet, they trudged slowly towards the church, Evalynn keeping a wide ring of fire around the trio to keep the rats at bay. Seeing that the rest of the group had made it to the church, she let the flames that had outlined the way to the church go out, instead focusing her energy on keeping their protection blazing. She had seen her fires swept to the side as one of the mares made their way past, so she assumed they had a gift as well, surely it would keep the rats at bay from the church.
Glancing down at the stallions legs, she winced as she saw blood streaming down the ragged flesh- and was that bone she saw?!- and didn't know how much longer this stallion would be able to keep on his hooves. Evalynn willed the trio to move faster, if only for his sake. As she caught sight of the rats outside of her fire ring, she watched the fire glinting in their angry, ravenous eyes, and she was beyond thankful for her gift. She had no illusions that she, or the other two, would have survived had she not possessed fire manipulation.
As they closed in on the church, this time she gazed upon the building with relief rather than mistrust. This would be their protection from the rats! However, as they were about to enter the building, Evalynn heard a scream, and looked inside. All of her group was inside, but she didn't know how many was from the Exiles. It had to be one of theirs. Seeing the pair of stallions safely inside the building, Evalynn spun around, and galloped towards where the screaming rang out, her hooves pounding over the cobbled ground, her muscles screaming as she pushed herself faster and faster. Rats tried leaping at her, and she took them down with well aimed flames. One rat managed to cut her off, and she reared up, a feral look in her eye as she crashed down on it, driving her hooves into the massive vermin's snout and skull.
Just as she was about to run past an alley, another scream rang out, and she saw a mare cornered by rats. As the rats tore into the mares underbelly, Evalynn charged, lowering her head, and catching one of the dirty rats in the ribs, and flinging it away from the bleeding Exile. Exhaustion was beginning to wear on her from her months of no training, but she forced herself to keep moving as she bucked, smashing a pair of rats between her back hooves and the alley wall.
"Can you still run?" she asked the mare as they had a moments reprieve from the mass of rats. She saw deep cuts running down the mares leg, and hoped to the Unicorns that they weren't severe enough that the mare couldn't run.

The rats were vicious, determined things. They threw their skinny bodies at him with no mercy. Hungry teeth gnawed at his legs and even his underbelly. The things were in such a rush to get nourishment they didn't care about a kill, they were glad to eat him alive. Kyanos was just as determined as they were though. He was not about to give in. He wouldn't lose to the little rats. His ears lay flat on the back of his head as he fought them off from the church. He refused to let even one vermin step their dirty little claws into that building if it was the last thing he did. As far as he saw it no rat was getting inside the church until he was dead, and he had no intentions of dying any time soon, certainly not today, not while he had a job to do. His heart pumped adrenaline through his body, numbing the pain and giving him energy to keep on fighting. He knew he couldn't keep this up forever. "Hurry up dammit!" He screamed at the last few horses yet to enter the building, his hoarse voice cracking in opposition to the misuse.
How many more were there? Kyanos mentally counted the bodies that had entered the building, though it didn't help him too much seeing as he had no idea how many Exiles there were. He squinted to see the colors and shapes of the horses, noting each that he recognized. One, two... he was missing one... no two more. He knew Evalynn had mentioned staying in the back of the herd, but dammit all she needed to get her butt in the building! And what about the small one? Where was she? He hadn't seen her since the rat attack. Before he could worry about her location though a thought came to mind. "Make sure the two back doors are secured shut!" he called back to those already safely in the walls of the church. Honestly he didn't care who did it, as long as someone made sure they were closed, otherwise his work of keeping the small monsters from entering the front door would be a complete waste. Speaking of... he lashed forward, grabbing the tail of one that had almost managed to slip past him and swinging it at several others, bowling them over before he threw the thing as far away from there as he could. He reared up, slamming his hooves down onto the spine of another and then kicking sideways with a back hoof to throw another off of his leg and kick a second in the face all at the same time. Wretched things! They were everywhere!
His attention was being forced to be at least five places at once, if not more, or so he felt. Trying to keep the rats out of the building, making sure the doors were secured, counting who entered the sanctuary, and keeping a watch out for Evalynn and Mercedes to return. He swore if the mares didn't come through those doors soon he was going to go find them and drag them here himself! He was charged with keeping these mares safe, that included the Olde knight, even if she could fight for herself. Then he saw it, the ring of fire surrounding three bodies. Finally! He let out a quiet sigh of relief that he had one more safe behind the church walls. No sooner had she walked to the front doors though did the mare turn and take off the other way, disappearing at the sound of a scream, a cry for help. It wasn't one of the Bachelors. As much as it didn't surprise him that she'd go running off after a horse she didn't even know, it still irritated him all the same.
Kyanos was torn between searching for Mercedes and going out after the pintaloosa mare. He was still responsible for the other two, but if the doors were closed they would be safe. He couldn't leave the others out there on their own, it was against everything in him. He didn't know where Mercedes was though. For all he knew she could be in the mouths of the rats right now. He refrained from letting that thought get to him. No, she was alright. She had to be or he would have failed his job. She was ok... and for now he knew where Evalynn was. She was going to have to be first, then he could find the other. His decision made he swung around, throwing several more rats away from the door as his stormy eyes met those of the horse who lead the band of Exiles. He didn't say a word, but everything was there in his gaze. He was entrusting that horse to keep everyone safe, his own group as well as the bachelor mares. He would be back, he was sure. He had to return and finish his job. Without another second he pulled the doors closed and then swung around. His hooves skid and for a split second he almost hit the ground, but he refused to. The moment he hit that ground he was rat-bate. Willing his tired legs to pull him back up he tore off toward the scream. He ran faster than he ever had in a long time. Fear of the dark prevented him from moving faster than he could catch himself, but at the moment that fear was nothing compared to the fear of death that these hungry rats posed. His legs ached, but it could be worse. It seemed his constant training was coming in handy.
His ears perked forward when he heard Evalynn's voice and just then he came around to the alley that the two were in. He reared up, smashing several more rats as he landed. "Yes, she can." His words were half encouragement, half demand. It didn't matter if the Exile thought she could run, she had no choice. Right now it was run or be eaten alive. He shoved his way behind the mare, pushing her forward, nipping her hip hard enough to be felt, but not enough to draw blood. There was no time to hessitate, no time to think, and certainly no time to say please. If any of them wanted to get to that church alive, they needed to get out of this alley before it was too late. "Let's go! Evalynn, clear up a path, I'll take the rear."
Words: 1089 Post # 13 +1 tier
((Edit: fixed up to include Mercedes not being in the church. :))
