Welcome to Exile Plot 006 : What Lies on the Horizon
Plot: Your small team has been tasked with the duty of searching the borders of the Southern Island! After all of the mysterious things that have been happening around the isles, one can never be too careful. Perhaps there is more to the Southern Isle than the Exiles could have expected. . .
Setting: The sun has just begun to rise over the last growths of green remaining here on the Southern Isle. Your group has just diverged from the others, having wished the restoring teams farewell but a few hours prior. Already, you have journeyed far into the land, and as you look out over the Ash Plains, it seems like a foggy dust cloud has grown accustom to it's place over the horizon line, blocking some of the light, but is not thick enough to be dangerous to breathe. . . yet.
Team Captain: Stormcry (wildstarchaser)
Team Members: Io
Eyrin
Effie
Gaius
Checkpoints Reached: None
Rules: 1. The Captain of the team must post first 2. A posting order must be kept as people enter the rp. 3. No god modding 4. React to the Checkpoints as they come! (If you don't know what a checkpoint is - don't worry - you'll know when they come!) 5. Communicate with your partners! 6. Have fun!!!!
How the posting order works:
Stormcry must post first, then anyone can post after him. They can post back and forth until someone else posts, when someone else posts they must be entered into the posting order. For example: Ryder Fay Ryder Fay Jack Kasier Ryder Fay Jack Kasier Kayden
And so on. This means you do not have to wait for someone to join, but once they do their first post you must wait for them.

STORMCRY | EXILE MARE | GUARD
Home. It was odd to think that after so long and so much tragedy, the decision to return to their homeland had been so simple and quickly made; anti-climatic even. Not that the dark, dull coated mare minded, for at this moment in time she was convinced that each step further and further into the Southern Isle was better than any feeling she had ever felt, the ashen earth comforting and familiar beneath her hooves. Fine layers of dried, sickly mucus cracked as damp nostrils flared wide with a deep shuddering gulp of the sweet air that was tinged with the scent of new life, new beginnings; promises of good things to come. And yet... something felt off. The paranoid feeling pricked annoyingly at her skin, and she knew logically it was probably just due to the predators that had come to inhabit the island in their absence, but still stashed the thought away in the back of her mind. They couldn't be too careful...not just yet.
Smoky wind ruffling her plumes of sharply cut mane, Stormcry turned her head to glance behind her at the small group with her, feeling a flicker of gratitude in her chest. Khala had granted her skillful, trustworthy herdmates for this mission; a lingering brightness chased away the glazed look in her eyes that she had held for so long at the thought that she was able to share the experience of reclaiming their home with good company. She looked at each one for a moment, assessing them each to ensure all was well; they had been fairly quiet since leaving their herdmates some time prior. There was Io, intelligent and cautious, silent in her graceful movement through the faint smog, a valued partner that the black guard knew she could trust from experience. Eyrin was next, humble and a little awkward, but well-intentioned and loyal as he took in the land around him with joyous eyes. His indecisive persona concerned her slightly should they run into trouble, but she felt that he would commit to doing his best to help his herdmates, and that was all she needed from him. Then Effie, smart, strong and a little infuriating in her pride, but still a valuable ally; the big grey paint clearly was prepared to do what was necessary to protect her little family if not the herd itself, a resolve Storm could appreciate as her heart warmed lightly at the thought of her own son and mate. Lastly, was Gaius. The guard stallion was not much younger than she, and seemed sensible; she didn't yet know him well enough to judge his character properly. Silver eyes regarded him thoughtfully; he had a fairly strong track record, but all the same, they had yet to work together despite both being rather experienced, and she could only hope that in the heat of the moment he would respect her decisions and orders.
Turning her gaze forward again after lingering a moment longer on her team, she continued leading the quiet march through the reborn land, intently focused on any possible hazards as one by one they faded into the thickening smog.

Io | Exile Mare | Scout __________________________________________________________________ Not too far behind the dark coated mare in the lead was where the pale faced scout kept herself as they progressed deeper into the island. Each silent step sent up a small puff of ash from the soft earth underfoot. Io kept her head low at a comfortable height only a few inches above the base of her shoulder. Her sunset red eyes burned like embers through the seemingly thickening fog. At the start of this mission she had felt excitement. Excitement at the idea of finally returning home to the Southern Isle, where she had grown up. But the island itself seemed to have run wild in their absence, and now here they were. The young mare let out a quiet breath before she took a few moments to observe every individual in this group she was assigned to. She recognized them, yes of course, but she never personally knew all of them. But she had met the gray-eyed mare before. Stormcry was it? Yes, that was it. Stormcry was her name. Io couldn't help but frown at the reminder that she knew almost no one in her herd. But she had managed to catch the names of the other three horses here earlier before they had departed from the rest of the groups. They were rather interesting individuals, she thought.
A gentle breeze tugged at her braided mane and tossed the loose strands about her face as it passed through. Brought on by the wind was a distraction from her observations, and now she succumbed to her wandering thoughts. As her red gaze swept the burnt landscape it took most of her strength to suppress the memories that the sight threatened to dig up. Her herd needed her full attention and focus. Personal matters would have to be pushed aside for now. Io's curled ears twitched and swiveled in every direction at almost every little sound. She couldn't lie, she was a bit fearful. Her eyes could only see so deep into the thick gray smog. She couldn't help shake the feeling that something was shadowing them.
In the back of her mind Io thought of a certain blue-eyed tobiano stallion, wondering where he could possibly be. Just the thought of him was enough to encourage her to lessen the tension in her muscles, as if she was expecting something to jump out at them from the fog at any moment. Minutes later she found her attention having wandered before settling on the dull coat of Stormcry once again, her ears flicking towards her when their surroundings stilled to quiet, in case she spoke or gave instruction.

KANU | STALLION | EXILE CAPTAIN
Large lungs puffed great amounts of air from widened nostrils, muscles rippled under coat and hooves pounded vigorously against the soft earth. He had been travelling for hours, making his way across the land bridge. For the first hour he'd only been galloping, then he'd walked, but now for the last leg of the journey he ran tirelessly. Kanu needed to catch the others, he needed to make sure he joined them before they strayed too far. He wasn't sure how many were with Storm, only that Storm was the one leading this expedition. He did know however that there wouldn't be many pleasant surprises on the Southern Isles, leaving it to it's own devices for so long would only welcome danger to it's door, and he didn't want any of Storm's travelling companions to get hurt- or her for that matter. Running like a wolf chasing a rabbit after weeks of starvation, he braced himself for the sight of home, thousands of thoughts darting through his mind. He had only a few more minutes of silence until he could see the Southern Isles emerge from the thick layer of smog that engulfed it. She was tainted, torn and tattered, and yet she was still as beautiful as she had ever been. Kanu felt the world move in slow motion around him as he increased his speed, eager to land on the shores of his home.
Finally, he slowed, the ground beneath his hooves a gradient from sand to ash. He scanned the plane, barren and dry, yet it had offered Kanu the desperate salvation he'd needed for the past few years. Instantly he pushed on to look for the others. They wouldn't have been far, because he left merely a few hours after they did. Just as the thought rippled into his mind, he smelt them. Their scents- all of them- were familiar, and he knew instantly who they were. Slowly he sifted through the thick layer of fog, breathing it in and exhaling it like cigarette smoke. Moving silently through the group of Exile's, he eyed none of them, keeping his vision on the path before him. He stopped next to Storm, giving her a sideways glance. He was still breathing heavily, but there was no sign of physical strain. He nudged her gently,
"Look at you Poppet, top of the food chain now."
He sighed and turned around to face the others, but said nothing. He was going to give them orders, tell them their mission, but he bit his tongue, remembering he was no longer in charge here. His jurisdiction was being taken over by Storm, which he was slightly grateful for. For once he wouldn't have to give orders, he'd have to take them. To him that was a pleasant change, but, he knew that at some point during this journey- out of reflex- he'd attempt to give orders and be the Captain he'd been for much of his life. For now he stepped back, merging- not so well- with the others. He looked to Io and nuzzled her neck in a hello, before nodding at the others. The reason he was late would remain with him until further notice.

Eyrin | Exile stallion | Pending
Eyrin was both excited and sad. Excited 'cause he had returned to their island, their home. The place he had so longed for when overseas. And sad, so sad as his hooves whipped up dust from the ashen ground. In his memories he could see the island covered in flames, the image bringing tiny tears to the corners of his eyes. He held himself firm though, not wanting to upset any of the other horses. As he walked he could remember scouting for food, for water when they were lost. He remembered the one Bryce who had been so sullen. And how his father got burned so badly as he tried to safe another horse from a fiery branch. He shook his head remembering himself of all the good memories that laid here too. That brought him a smile and he looked around to watch his companions, trying to see if they were doing okay. Admittedly, he hadn't talked to any of them before, except for Io, but even with her it had been briefly and in the middle of the war. She had struck him as a good one, also assisting the fallen like him. He tried sending her a smile, but it was hesitant, not sure if she would notice, appreciate it or even remember him.
Another set of hooves making way to his ears had Eyrin glancing back, surprised to see someone trotting up to their group. He recognized the captain, the stallion having talked to him even, when they had just left their home. He had wished to return back than, looking out over the sea when Kanu had walked up to him. And today he had his wish. He nodded politely after the male had greated his friends, hoping soon someone would open conversation. He disliked the silence that lay over them, though he was not sure what they could have to talk about.

STORMCRY | EXILE MARE | GUARD
The air remained hushed, quiet between their little group, silence so thick it could be cut with a knife. Usually she would appreciate the quiet; it made it easier for her to do her job without her herdmates jabbering on annoyingly, but this was different. A different kind of quiet than falling into comfortable silence. Each of them seemed unsettled, waiting for something drastic to occur. Storm's ears flickered thoughtfully, and she was about to ask Io for her opinion when thundering hoofbeats caught her attention. Alarmed, her head snapped back in the direction of the worrisome noise that clearly belonged to something large and heavy- something strong. Lip curled, ears flattened and back bristling aggressively, the dark mare was a fearsome sight as she scented the air that was thankfully blown toward her by the wind with a daunting expression upon her worn face. A moment passed. She remained still, brain ticking, adrenaline pulsing. Another moment. Her brow furrowed. At last, after what had agonizingly seemed like hours of waiting but had really only been a few heartbeats, the creature in question faded into focus through the ash and the hostile look faded from her face, to be replaced by confusion. Kanu...? What was he doing here? Did Khala send him?
Watching as he stopped by them, she set her gaze upon him expectantly for news- but nothing came. He seemed...calm for the most part, and congratulated her in that strange way he did things: blunt, and a little wry, but genuine all the same. "Ducky...?" She hissed the childhood nickname quietly, hoping for some, any explanation, but already he had dropped back to walk with Io and she was left to watch him with exasperation. Clearing her throat, she parted her lips to speak, but stopped herself. If Kanu had a message from Khala, or some pressing reason join their group, he would have told her instantly; but he had said nothing. Whatever it was, it wasn't urgent, clearly. Perhaps he would speak to her when they were alone, at a later time...? If she asked him now and he could not provide an answer, it could unsettle her herdmates and flaw their resolve. No, she decided, they must remain on track, confident in the mission, or things would quickly go downhill. Turning to face the front after giving the Captain, her brother, a slight dip of her head in a nod, she decided to bring about some conversation, despite how much she hated small talk. Maybe it would soothe the quivering tensions among the group.
"What did you lot miss most while we were gone?" She called casually, flickering her ears as she controlled her tone. Musn't make them feel pressured- just act at ease, and if she was fortunate they would follow her lead. Offering her own answer first, words softly fell from her tongue. "I missed the smell. There really is no scent like home, I don't think. It's like... a warm blanket. I didn't realize how much I took it for granted." Light amusement lit her eyes and she looked back at them with a small smile tugging at her dry lips, hoping that this relaxed method would pay off.

Efflorescence | Mare | Exile Guard_________________________________________________________________________Effie wasn't all that pleased to be back 'home'. She had this feeling in the pit of her stomach when she left her boys with the others, a feeling that obviously wan't felt by the others. She crossed the land bridge her hooves ringing hollow. She had taken up position at the rear observing everyone from her little place at the back and weighed every one up. She chewed her lip, a nervous habit that had left her with the faintest scar on her lower lip, she raised her head ears swivelling and taking the area in. She dragged her feet once they were on the southern island and the gnawing feeling remained. She went back to studying the others, her green eyes lingering over the horses in front of her. She heard the hoof beats, they were heavy and she spun ears flat. Her expression softened when she saw Kanu. She turned back and caught up with the others, her paces light and fluid once she was back in position she lowered her head and carried on plodding.
She listened to Stormcry an ear flickering towards the mare. she listened to the mares memory and nodded gently "When I left the herd to go with a few others, I ended up here when I was pregnant. I was...curious, It looked worse than this. I didn't stay long and went to find Ryder and after that we returned." she allowed her voice to fade and looked around her, eyes somewhat glazing. She gave a grunt and focused on her walking. She flicked ash as she walked "How were they going to live here, its still charred. Is Khala leading us to death? Would Cael have lead us to this decision?" she mused quietly to herself and then looked up, flicking her ear and snorting gently.

Io | Exile Mare | Scout __________________________________________________________________ Io's wandering attention momentarily found Eyrin. For mere moments before her eyes had found him, noticing his familiar brown coat and short, sharply cut mane. But where exactly she was remembering him from, she couldn't quite grasp. Then it finally came to her and her eyes widened. The war had wracked her brain and she silently scolded herself for nearly forgetting. Without a sound she slowed her pace enough to walk next to him, flicking her tail in greeting as a soft smile accompanied her kind expression. The pale faced mare would have greeted him with words if she hadn't been taken by surprise by their captain's arrival. She could recognize him anywhere, and just the sight of him made her heart swell with happiness. Kanu! Although she kept her excited claim to herself she gladly nuzzled him in return when he had approached her. It had been too long since she had spoke with him.
But at his arrival a curiosity filled her mind. Kanu hadn't set out with them, and Stormcry hadn't said anything about him joining them... What indeed was he doing here? She released a short breath, a sigh as she watched him with admiring eyes. All her worries seemed to have dissipated, unlike the smog around them, at his arrival. The more friends present, the better. Now it seemed a good opportunity to get to know the others, and her ears twitched as Stormcry's voice reached them.
With the mare in the back being the first to answer, that was where Io's head had turned to. So she has a family. A bit of sadness tugged at her heart. She didn't have a family of her own herself, but she couldn't help but feel a bit of sympathy for those who did. Life on this island of theirs was harsh, especially during these times, with the war and all. As her thoughts overtook her, her soft smile slowly transformed into a worrisome frown.

KANU | STALLION | EXILE CAPTAIN
The confusion and concern was clear on Storm's face, he had already assumed Storm would react this way, why wouldn't she? She already had quite a lot resting on her shoulders- as Kanu knew all too well- and he hadn't even explained why he had suddenly appeared out of literally nowhere. But, he simply kept quiet, letting her make her own assumptions until later. He looked down at Io, glad to see she was doing well and appeared to be happy that he had arrived. The rest seemed more relieved than annoyed at his presense, which he enjoyed to no end. It had been a feeling he'd only recently learnt to read, the confidence in himself that he could be a leader- a figure whom others needed to follow and trust. For many years he didn't believe he could do it, he didn't believe that those he looked over wanted to associate themselves with him in the first place. That's the reason why seeing his companion's recent expressions meant so much to him. It literally made his heart glow.
At Storm's question, Kanu really had to think. There were so many things he loved, he'd missed. So many bad memories, and so many good ones. He nodded at Storm's answer, breathing the scent in as she spoke of it with a tinge of warmth. Effie spoke next, and Kanu took note of her change of expression after her reply. She seemed uneasy, he decided, and dropped back slightly to walk with her. "Are you ok?" He whispered quickly, before quickly offering his thoughts on the Island he called home. "I miss the memories. This was where I met Poppet- well, Storm. I met Cholena here, all of you, there's just so many memories, good and bad, but it's the good ones I miss the most, the good ones that I treasure. It's just like a giant flood of nostalgia has washed over me."
He felt serene, even though there were many dangers here he assumed, he was relaxed, he felt as though he was free. There was no one looking over him every second, there were no boundaries. No Bachelors especially. He quite honestly felt like kissing the ground- he was that happy to be back. As the group moved on, Kanu noticed the ashy fog growing thicker, and he quietly attempted to cough it out of his throat. This was something he wasn't yet used to, the air from the Eastern Isles was so clean, and now it was ten times thicker, small particles of ash and debris dancing across his vision and into his lungs.

Eyrin felt more at ease when Io seemed to recognize him. She was distracted by Kanu so she didn't say anything, but he was content to know that his face wasn't that easily forgotten. He quietly watched as others greeted one another before returning his attention to Stormcry as she asked a question. In the back the mare Effie was the first to answer. Eyrin sent her a sad look as she mentioned being pregnant. That meant she had a child. He was already uneasy with leaving his family alone, all full-grown adults. He couldn't imagine what it would be like leaving your own baby behind. They had to check everything was safe though, for their herd's sake.
Kanu said he missed the memories. Eyrin thought about it seriously. He guessed he didn't really miss the memories itself, but maybe the places they took place in? It was like an emotional attachement to the land, something you had built a band with overtime. Like a friend. He scraped his throath to clear it as the ashen dust around them seemed to grow thicker and answered:" I missed not feeling lost. This land holds our herd's history, we belong here, we to the land and the land to us. I missed belonging like that." He breathed, hoping he didn't sound weird, but it's what he really missed. His nose wrinkled and he added jokingly. "The smell is abit dusty right now."

STORMCRY | EXILE MARE | GUARD
A fond smile found itself upon her lips as a few of her squad chipped in some conversation, appearing to be more relaxed and casual. They were good answers; ones she could agree with, definitely. A small, rasping chuckle was beginning to ease from her lungs at Eyrin's wry joke when another sound reached her ears much like Kanu's had done during his arrival. Instantly she stopped, head high as she scanned the land with wary eyes once more. "Everyone, stop a moment. No one move or speak." She hissed, praying they would understand and obey the urgency of her tone. Ears swiveling, nostrils flaring, she stood tensely, waiting for the sound to come again like a bullet to her hearing through the silence. When it did, her blood ran cold with horror. Predators, already? Fierce ones at that. For a moment, she was reminded of the weight of the responsibility as the leader and very nearly wallowed in despair as her heart leapt about wildly in her chest, thrumming in her ears with adrenaline that brought her skin to what felt like a boil as anxious sweat began to prick at her coat. Her brain was a flurry of conflict and paranoid possibilities, biting at her relentlessly. What if she failed to protect her comrades? Made a wrong order? What if they died, limbs torn from limb and their soul's final destination this dry, ashen ground, herself the one the blame? What if, what if, what if-
Storm stopped.
She shut her eyes a moment, silencing the voices, for now.
She sucked in a calming breath, the only sign of her inward turmoil.
And then she leapt into action.
"Grassbeasts!" She barked in a declaration, pivoting around to face her comrades, setting them with steely, determined eyes. "Everyone, into a circle, rumps on the inside so that we all face outward. Wait for them to come to us. Running about after them in this smog will be about as useful as going swimming when it's raining. Do not lose each other!" She ordered, making sure to put extra emphasis on the last line. Grassbeasts on their own were idiotic at best, but with an alpha to direct them they could easily separate a member from the group and cause serious damage. She took her position in the circle first, turning back around with a fearsome scowl set into her expression. "Look out for each other, and beware their fangs! Show no mercy; crushing their skulls and their spines is the quickest way to take them out!" Her voice rang through the air, challenging and with the educated fierceness of a veteran who knew what they were doing. "No matter how many there are, you must not stop fighting or you will let not just yourself, but this group down. Do you understand my orders?"

Effie | Mare | Exile Guard
Effie watched as Kanu approached her, and she bobbed her head and murmured a gentle Captain before he spoke, then she addressed his question her tone as blank as her expression "I have left my boys, it will never rest easy with me - having them out of sight means anything could happen. They can look after themselves but I always think. What if." She refused to let her voice quiver or break, and let her face return to her stoic frown. She snorted and raised her head looking away from the stallion her ears flickering, she was tense the feeling was just not resting.
As soon as Stormcry asked them for silence, her muscles quivered. Gently at first but as soon as Grassbeasts were said and the commands given out Effie spun to face them and backed up to Stormcry her rump touching the other mares, she bared her teeth and arched her neck she almost let out a little growl. She watched them fade in and out of the smog, she tried to keep track but they were sly. Stormcry asked if they understood and Effie grinned and said "Loud and clear, boss." Her ears flicked forwards and they were trying to track them from little sounds, unsuccessfully she might add. She raised her head and took in a breath to prepare for the fight.

Io | Exile Mare | Scout __________________________________________________________________ Everyone, stop a moment. No one move or speak. The world seemed to slow as Io's ears flattened the moment Stormcry's words reached them. The fear of what had caused their group leader's alarm made her heart beat quicken, but it was nothing compared to how rapid it grew at the word; grassbeasts. With her sunset eyes wide in terror she quickly backed up, nearly bumping into Eyrin, who she had been standing the closest to. Just the memory of those horrid things made the clawed scar on her upper left shoulder pulse and throb. She had had too many encounters with these beasts, and she remembered them all too well... and they had also taken her son from her.
That was enough to force her to stand her ground, and Stormcry's orders only helped it sink in. Io wasn't built for fighting, she was far too slim and she doubted that she could do any serious damage. But as the familiar scent of those furred canines reached her nostrils she narrowed her eyes, positioning herself next to the members in her group, her head low and ears pinned as flat against her head as she could hold them. She was going to do the best she could, or die trying. No. The pale faced mare shook her head. Those grassbeasts would be the ones to die today. Her upper lip twitched as she bared a snarl of her own. Crush their skulls, snap their spines. She echoed those words in her head. Beware of their fangs and stay together.
At the dull coated mare's request for confirmation, she swallowed before nodding in agreement with Effie. "We won't let you down." She answered, eyes narrowed in determination. "We'll send those beasts to their deaths."

KANU | STALLION | EXILE CAPTAIN
The dark Captain gave a slight smile to Eyrin, thankful that the group seemed to be warming up to each other. It was often hard to lead a group that didn't get along- Kanu knew all too well. But, luckily for Storm, everyone here seemed to be more than keen to work together and be compliant to Storm's requests. Kanu turned to Effie as she replied to his earlier question, a wave of sympathy washed over him for her. He too had a family now, one that had blossomed so quickly and unexpectedly on the Eastern Islands that he was still learning how to be a father and a loving husband. It was something so foreign to him, but he was the happiest he had ever been knowing that he always had a daughter and wife to return home to. That was one thing that worried him however, Effie's words could not have said it better. Anything could happen to Lena or Dawne, his recently blinded daughter who had never been to the burnt Southern Isles. And Cholena, what if she ran into a Bachelor? They wouldn't take her escape from their grasps lightly, what if they tried to take her? Kanu gave a slight nervous smile before turning away, furrowing his eyebrows once his expression was beyond anyone's eyes. A knife seemed to edge it's way into Kanu's gut, he had only now just thought of these things. He didn't know what he'd do with himself if Cholena or Dawne got hurt and he wasn't there to protect them.
Kanu's worrisome thoughts were suddenly shattered when Storm hissed at her group to be quiet, stay still. A new flurry of thoughts entered his mind, ones that concerned not his wife and child, but the group of Exile's he was travelling with now. Merely a split second before Storm revealed there was danger, Kanu could smell them. Those savage, blood thirsty creatures were on their hooves. Kanu knew the smell all too well, and quickly shot a glance at Io, knowing that she'd had one too many run ins with the beasts. Everyone here had probably had a run in with them, which was unfortunate because they never meant good news, and they always left a scar, whether it be emotional or physical.
Kanu instantly swung around and met his rump with the others', he felt his press against Io's, and left a spot open for Eryin to jump in. Their formation was close and Kanu diverted from a casual persona to that of a Captain. In the herd his main duty was to organize battles, lead the soldiers- just as he did in the war between Olde and Bachelor. This was what he was good at, combat. He had sharp sight, good coordination and a lot of experience up his sleeve. This was where he could be most useful- besides tracking, which was his main ability.
