A RP between ValiantShadow's Grange and raveniice's Io.
The sun was warm on the small champagne's back as he bent his head low to crop another mouthful of grass. Guarding the herd was boring, and Grange was becoming quite irritated with it at this point. No one ever tried to escape, or even stepped out of line, which was nice, but that meant that he spent hours upon hours just standing still, watching. Hours that he could have spent exploring the Bachelor territory or finding a way off this unicorn-forsaken rock. But no, he was stuck here. So he might as well make the best of it. Shaking his mane, the stallion cropped yet another snack, chewing the juicy summer grass slowly. As he ground the forage, he began lazily walking towards the mares, giving them all a once-over look.

It was another meaningless day for the pale faced Exile scout. There hadn't really been anything that required her 'scouting' abilities, so everything and everyday was rather dull. With a flick of her tail she walked a fair distance away from her herd, head held slightly low and ears twitching at every sound in case she needed to make a quick getaway. With her thoughts all to herself the first thing that came to Io's mind was how much she hated this island. She longed for her once beautiful home, and missing it made her heart ache. She exhaled a breath through her nose, her nostrils flaring as she did. She was hoping for something to happen.

As Grange meandered, he caught sight of a mare he recognized vaguely as one of the Exiles. She was, he thought, what most stallions would consider pretty, although his interest in her looks went no further than how nicely her pale face complimented the colors of her coat. What he noticed, instead, was how bored and irritated she looked. The same expression graced her dark-lipped face as his, and that intrigued the stallion. Pricking his ears (what was left of them, after that mare had taken half of the left one), he began to make his way towards the slight mare. "What are you doing here?" the stallion asked, trying to keep his tone authoritative but friendly. He didn't want to alienate this stranger (although the X scar across his face usually did that for him, without him speaking a word), but he also did not want her to believe that she was the dominant horse in this exchange.

Io's head turned at the sound of an unfamiliar voice, and her ears instantly flattened when she recognized the signature 'X' marked on his forehead. Great, just what I needed. For a few moments she stood there facing the gray stallion, her light blue eyes watching him. Already she could see that he didn't seem like a threat, but then again she had made that very same mistake before, and she wasn't planning on doing so again. For a while it seemed like she was intending on keeping silent at his question, but after about an awkward minute of hesitant silence she finally spoke. "Going for a walk."

The stallion had two choices; he could either continue to grill her about her intentions (which seemed boring and very unfun), or he could take a more friendly tack, and try actually talking to the mare as if she were anything more than a plaything, as most Bachelors saw mares. "I guess I can't fault you, since I'm doing the same," he said, with the tiniest of wry smiles forming on his lips. As the warm summer sun beat down on his back, he swished his tail, watching the mare to see how she would react; already it seemed that she mistrusted his Bachelorship, but he thought that perhaps he could win her over with his real personality even still. "I wouldn't head too far in that direction though," he said, pointing East-ish. "The Bachelor mares are over there, and you're liable to get caught if the other stallions see you." Yes, they'd take one look at her gorgeous coat and slim figure, and it would be all over for the Exile mare's freedom.

The pale scout's eyes never left him, and it was clear in her body language that she was unsure about him. After her first, and as she had hoped would have been the last, encounter with a Bachelor stallion, it hadn't ended too well for her. She was simply too naive then. But still, she had no reason to trust in his words. But on the other hand, perhaps she did. Io snorted and rolled her eyes as she looked off to the side at his mention of possibly getting caught if she had continued in her desired direction.
She raised her head, letting out a breath before she decided to drop her growing defensive attitude. It didn't do her so well before. "Well thank you for telling me." She muttered, sounding more ungrateful than what her words implied. "And where do you suggest I should go?" She asked suddenly, flicking her tail as her ears perked toward him. There was just a bit of a challenge in those words.

"Not down the path you're taking, if you want anyone to like you," the champagne horse replied, his pink muzzle twisting into a slight grin. He was teasing the mare now. "Did no one ever teach you manners?" he asked, pricking his ears towards her. Despite his dislike of conflict, Grange couldn't help but find the mare's aggression amusing. "But, who am I to say that, when I've forgotten mine. I'm Grange," he introduced himself, swishing a fly away from his flank with his stubby tail. "And you are?"

"Io." The white faced mare responded, her ears flicking towards her back. She didn't take too kindly to his teasing words. She did lack a fun sense of humor, she was simply either too jumpy and fearful, or too serious to really care. But there was something about this stallion, Grange was it, that she actually found quite interesting. But still, that didn't mean that she welcomed his presence. He was still one of them.

"You seem upset by something," the intuitive horse remarked, swishing his tail as he nonchalantly dipped his head down to tear up a mouthful of bright green summer grass. "And I would venture to say it's me," he added, his blue eyes looking up at her for affirmation as he rooted around, searching for the tastiest shoots. Already, this day was becoming more interesting, and the stallion was intrigued by Io the Exile. He wanted to know more.

Io watched as he rooted around in the grass, her eyes blank with emotion. But yet those pale blue orbs of hers still held a sense of calmness. Yes, he was the source of her mild irritation. She was far from comfortable with him around. But she quickly reminded herself that it shouldn't have taken her by surprise, and she had no right to shoo him away. This was, after all, their island. "No not you per say. No." She said with a quick flick of her ears, lowering her head to the ground and inspecting the grass at her feet. "My first encounter with...one of you, wasn't exactly what I'd call friendly." Io spoke those words a bit more quietly. "But I suppose it is unfair of me to place my judgement on him on you as well."

"Almost none of them are what you'd call friendly," he said, with a wry smirk. Grange raised his head again suddenly, listening to some far off sound. When he was convinced that it was nothing a few seconds later, he turned his attention back to the pale-faced mare. "I, in fact, share very few qualities with my herdmates. I'm not big, I'm not intimidating, and I'm not dumb," he said, beginning to enjoy the conversation he was having with the strange exile mare. She seemed intuitive to him, and he liked that.

Finally the Exile scout's dark lips formed into a small smile. She found some amusement in his words. "That's a relief." She said, thinking out loud. Now, Io didn't want to sound rude, and she surely didn't want to offend him now, so she formed her question thoughtfully. "Are there many like you in your herd?" She asked, rather curious indeed.

"One or two," he said, shrugging. "Most of the mares are all right, but there are very few stallions who seem interested in sharing my views on things." Even fewer that shared his interest in, to put it bluntly, other stallions, too, but he was fairly certain that wasn't what Io was asking, so he felt no need to bring it up. "And what about you? How many inquisitive adventurers are there in the Exile herd?" he asked, smiling at her slightly.

"Hmm," she began, his question leading her to wonder herself. "To be truthful, I wouldn't know." She stated simply. It was a bit sad really. For twenty-one years of her life she knew no one else, aside from her adopted mother and brother of course. But due to her tendency of often appearing rather withdrawn, she didn't exactly appear welcoming to others. "It's actually quite embarrassing really," Io let her shoulders sag slightly. "I know very few horses in my herd."

"I used to be like that," he said, giving the mare a halfhearted smile as he remembered. "No friends, no family to claim, and I always kept my mouth shut. I spent my time hiding, watching and waiting. I saw how my herd treated each other - treated the mares - but I never did anything to stop it. I didn't know that there were horses who could be swayed, because I never asked anyone anything. I never introduced myself. And now, looking back, I can't believe that lonely little stallion could have ever been me."
