"Of course," the small champagne said, smiling at Io as he watched her tumble down the hill gracefully and land beside him, her expression bright and ready to explore once again. "Just down this way, there's a nice stand of trees," he said, meandering towards a small copse of evergreens, whose trunks grew so close together that it was a tight fit for them to squeeze through. On the other side, though, there was a view that was well worth it. Birds swooped from branch to branch, chattering and flashing bright colors in the leaves. They all had nests, and were jumping from place to place, fixing them up for spring.

Io's curiosity had been eating at her as she followed after him. It had been far too long since she had someone to talk to and enjoy the day with. Her sunset-colored eyes widened in amazement and her gaze followed the birds as they darted from one branch to the next. "Wow..." A gentle breeze tugged at her mane. "This is really something, Grange."
But as a beam of sunlight blinded her momentarily, the moment she regained her sight and gazed out further beyond the trees, an echoing laughter of a young foal reached her ears. At first she had thought she was simply hearing things, but then a flash of a familiar dusty palomino coat snatched her gazed. "Toby..." The name simply slipped from her mouth in a whisper as another breeze blew around them. But then the image of the foal simply disappeared with the wind as the sunlight shifted.

Grange watched the small animals as they flitted from limb to limb, listening and understanding their chatter, though with so many voices at once, it was hard to distinguish each individual voice anyway. It was more like a hodgepodge of sounds, with words thrown in here and there that he just barely recognized, just like when he first started training to speak the animal tongues.
Grange's attention was taken from the birds and given fully to Io as he noticed the mare staring off through the trees, muttering about something to herself. Toby? The name seemed familiar, but he couldn't place it, and that piqued his interest. "What was that?" the stallion asked, trying to appear innocent as he pricked his ears towards Io, wondering what she was thinking about.

Io | Exile | Scout ________________________________________________ Io was quiet for a moment before she responded. "Toby...m-my son..." She seemed to be in a little bit of a trance as her eyes tried to search for the familiar face of her foal again. But with the shifting sunlight, controlled by the passing clouds overhead, it wouldn't come to pass again.
Slowly Io tucked her head slightly, blinking herself out of her momentary trance. The realization came to her that that mirage couldn't have been her son. Her Toby was dead. He had died three years ago. But his death still haunted her. She couldn't seem to move on from that day, it was impossible to push aside the guilt she felt. She let out a sigh. "I'm just seeing things..." She said in a quiet voice, avoiding any eye-contact with the gray bachelor.

"I see," the stallion said softly, giving Io a look that was mostly sympathy, with a small bit of pity mixed in. He wondered what it would be like to be tied so closely to another horse, only to have them torn away. "I suppose we all see things from time to time," the stallion said quietly, staring at the horizon in the direction that Io had been gazing.

Io | Exile | Scout ________________________________________________ "Yes...I suppose." Io's answer was simple.
But as she watched the horizon and the slowly setting sun her eyes widened slightly. "I seem to have lost track of time..." She thought aloud, flicking her tail to the side. My mother will worry about me, I shouldn't have stayed out this long. But Io couldn't help but think of how she enjoyed this day. It had been a good long while since she had a decent conversation with anyone before, and Grange had definitely helped lessen her fear of Bachelor stallions. Well, perhaps not by much but certainly a little!
"Um, Grange? Would you mind showing me the way to my herd?" She turned her head to look at him, a friendly smile on her face. "I don't want to ah, run into any of your herd members...again." She laughed lightly at the end of her sentence, hoping that what she had said didn't offend him somehow.

"Of course," The champagne stallion said, dipping his head to the Exile mare. "Trust me, I don't really want to run into them either," he added, with a wry chuckle as he turned, leading Io towards the Exiles' camp. It was surprising to him that the Exile mare had responded so well to a Bachelor horse at all, let alone a Bachelor stallion. Grange was used to the frightened looks and spiteful words that usually followed him. But this mare, this mare had opened up, had allowed herself to see what might be, if not for the boundaries and customs that made his herd so different from her own. She had crossed an invisible border, reaching out to someone most horses wouldn't even bother with, as they would all assume he was on the opposite side of the fence. Perhaps there was a chance for the Bachelor herd to redeem itself, Grange thought. If he could be friendly towards an Exile, and she friendly in return, perhaps that day could come.
