The mare watched him and listened to him with interested, quite amazed that she was standing here having a pretty decent conversation with a Bachelor stallion. "It sounds like you changed for the better." Io commented with a quick flick of her tail. For a few moments she turned her head to look around, taking a short time to admire the island around her. Although she missed her home land terribly, she couldn't deny the beauty this island held. "So, Grange, was it?" Her ears flicked towards him. "What do you Bachelors do for fun around here?"

"I'd like to think so," the stallion replied, shaking his mane to shoo away a few flies. He noticed her admiring the landscape, and he felt a small surge of pride for his homeland. Although the Bachelors might be a cruel batch, their home was undoubtedly beautiful, and it made Grange feel good that the outsiders took notice of it. "Well, for the most part, the stallions spar, but I like to spend my time exploring the territory. There's all kinds of secrets hidden in these lands," he said, gazing about the clearing fondly, thinking of all his little hidey-holes. "I can show you...if you like," he offered, watching the mare for her reaction.

The mare's ears flicked at the offer. The last time she had gone on a 'tour' with a Bachelor through their island she had lost a whole lot of her trust towards outsiders, especially horses from said herd. But then again that stallion had never offered to show her, not like this one.
Io nodded slowly. She was eager to see more of the beautiful island, she had been curious about it ever since the Exiles had temporarily moved here. "I would love to see the rest of the island." She stated. But she raised a brow at Grange, giving him a bit of a suspicious look. "No tricks, alright?"

"I promise," Grange said, bowing his head slightly to the Exile mare. He could see that she was nervous, and he was certain she had good reason to be. It wasn't a very welcoming land, the Bachelor island. The inhabitants made it a little difficult to survive in. "I'm not much like my herdmates," he said, with a rueful smile. "See this?" he asked, showing off the long scar that ran down his right shoulder. "Another stallion in the herd gave me this, for disagreeing with him."

A friendlier smile found it's way onto her pale face as her entire body relaxed. Now that she had spoken with Grange a bit more, she didn't feel so threatened, but yet she was still a little uneasy and it was still difficult to give him her full trust. Io's eyes traced the scar that he mentioned, which lead her to looking at the other variety of scars that were etched on his gray coat, all of them varying in sizes. They reminded her of the ones she herself bore on her own coat. "It sounds like a tough life." The comment could have easily made her sound naive. Of course life wasn't easy, at least for her herd. Only the Olde horses live in luxury. She snorted at the thought. "But," she continued. "At least you earned an impressive scar."

"It is. But, there's nothing to do to change it that I haven't already done," the stallion said, his expression growing fully serious for a moment. He thought of all the things he had done, all the stallions he had alienated for this cause, and he decided it was worth it. Even the Exiles, at one time, had it better than the Bachelor herd. The Olde horses...they were untouchable, it seemed. But they were so caught up in their wild beliefs that they didn't even realize it. At Io's comment about the scar, Grange chuckled slightly. "I suppose you're right," he said, grinning. "And in my herd, that's a good thing."

"Of course." Io said with a flick of her tail. "I would think so." She took a moment to look over her shoulder, her eyes searching. In the back of her mind she thought about her dear mother and the rest of the herd. She seemed to far from them now. But then again perhaps she was closer to them than she thought. "Well," she turned her attention back on the spotted Bachelor stallion. "Lead the way, Grange."

"Right this way, M'lady," the stallion said, smiling as he turned and began to lead the pale faced mare down one of the many side paths he had discovered on his jaunts throughout Bachelor territory. The path itself led to a secluded meadow, with a small pond and stand of trees. From their location now, the meadow wasn't visible, and it wouldn't be until they were almost on top of it, adding to the 'wow' factor. Grange moved slowly, not wanting to exert himself to any great length as they ambled along.

With a nod Io followed, her attention shared with the stallion and the landscape surrounding the two of them. Nature was always something that the pale mare admired, as well as feared, but it was something that she often tried to understand. Her blue eyes searched through the foliage that they passed, her ears flicking at every wing flutter and whispering of the breeze. This island was beautiful, there was no doubt about that. The grass was soft underfoot, and for the first time since she had been here on Bachelor lands, she felt at peace. Her eyes were wide in awe, like an excited foal. But she couldn't help but feel a little envious. How could a herd like this deserve such a beautiful land? But she scolded herself for the rude and selfish thought.
"Your island really is beautiful." Io's voice was almost a whisper. "The Southern Isle looked like this once..." She released a sigh. "But even in it's charred state I still miss it."

"I wish I could have seen it before it burned," Grange said, glancing back at the mare with a sympathetic expression. "I've always wanted to travel...to get away from this place," he added, with a quite sigh of his own. He stopped to stare at the land around him, taking in the greenness of the land and the blue of the ocean off in the distance.

"I remember it being beautiful." Io said with a sad smile. "Oh?" Her ears twitched at his mention of wanting to travel. "I've always wanted to travel myself." She with a comforting yet sad smile. When he came to a stop so did she, standing not too far behind him to gaze upon the beautiful view before her, and her eyes were instantly drawn to the distant ocean beyond the rolling green hills and the trees that dotted them. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she took in the warmth of the sun, letting her mane dance in the breeze. "There's nothing that holds me here, and you know, who knows what else could be out there..." She added in a whisper. "I've always wondered..."

Grange listened to her express how beautiful her island had been, seeing the sadness in her expression as she sighed. Her visage changed, however, to one of interest as he mentioned traveling. He could see her ears twitch, and she looked more animated as she spoke of traveling as well. When Io expressed that nothing was holding her, Grange felt a sudden tug of envy. He had things to hold him back, like chains keeping him at the bottom of some deep ocean. There was the fact that he had been raised to show loyalty to his heard, no matter how much he despised them. And there was the memory of that awful trip into the mountains, when Cain had forced all dissenters to their knees before him. Grange knew that if he abandoned his post, he would most likely be hunted down and killed, his body left for the grass beasts to dispose of. "It's true. There could be anything out there," he said, shaking off his grim thoughts.

Grange's temporary silence snagged Io's attention and she turned her head slightly to look at him, partially curious as to what might have been going through his mind. She looked at the grass beneath her hooves for a moment in thought, a small smile on her face. "But I can see how hard of a place this would be to leave." She said as she lifted her head back up towards the landscape before them. "I guess one could never truly just pick up and leave home."
The sudden flutter of wings caught her attention and she looked to the side to find a small sparrow taking off from a pine, flying in the opposite direction of it's flock. The sight seemed to have brought sadness to her, for her smile turned into a light frown.

"I thought I could, a long time ago," the stallion said, sighing as he remembered the plans he and Casper had made to escape the herd, if only things worked out right. They never did, and now both horses were mired in their herd, tied by duty or by loved ones, and not able to flit away like they had once hoped.
The small bird alighting caught Grange's attention, and he watched it flutter off from the tree branch. He was itching to exercise his gift and ask why the sparrow was so far from its flock, but he wasn't sure what the Exile would have thought, so he simply watched it fly away. When he next turned to Io, he noticed that she was frowning.
"Everything all right?" the stallion asked quietly, his ears pricked as he looked over at the mare.

The ear closest to the stallion flicked towards him at his question. "Oh," Io shook her head, forcing a small smile onto her face. "Everything's fine. I was just thinking."
Without a word she slowly slipped down the hill, her body turned to the side so that it made it easier for her to slide on the grass, which she flattened in the process. She ended her little slip'n'slide by jumping several feet a head, her tail flicking behind her and her mane bouncing at her shoulders. "Well Grange," Io looked over her shoulder at him, her pale blue eyes twinkling in the sun light. "Let's go and explore those hidden secrets you told me about."
