"Defend Yourself" Ryder and Sinclair Timeline: This takes place a week after the Exiles arrived on the Eastern Island.
[ Ryder ]
The brown stallion made his way through the woods. His mouth was full of herbs that he had gathered to take back to his herd. The journey to the Eastern island hadn't been friendly, and many of the horses were wounded and beaten from the constant exposure to saltwater and sand. Their thin sides had been paper thin, and any sort of exposure had left scrapes and bruises on the weakened Exile herd. After a week on this island, however, Ryder could feel his sides fattening up a bit, and his strength had begun to return which was definitely a good thing with all of these brutes around. He hadn't laid eyes on one personally, but he had had one as a father, and Ryder knew what they were capable of. A snort escaped him at the thought of the monster that had raised him and killed his mother. Ryder was glad that his half-brother and himself had ended the old stallion's days before venturing onward. It was like a weight had been lifted off of his chest. His father wouldn't be able to hurt anyone any longer.
A sharp scream pierced the air around him, making him drop the herbs in his mouth and gallop in the direction it had come from. He pounded through the woods, jumping over fallen logs and small streams until he finally saw two figures in the distance. A mare lay on her side in the tall grass as a stallion stood dominantly over her. A wicked grin crossed the brute's face, making his x-scar look even more menacing. Ryder came to a halt at the edge of the forest, out of sight of the stallion. His eyes widened a bit as the horse raised a hoof. Ryder shook his head. He wouldn't kill her, right? Even if she was a broodmare, the Bachelors needed them. Just as the Bachelor stallion's eyes held a glint that was all too familiar to Ryder, the Exile scout broke out into the field. "STOP!"

The mare screeched and braced for the hovering hooves to hit her, she shut her eyes tightly and cringed, finching away, almost not noticing the sound. She pinned her ears and caught a whiff of, "STOP!" She opened her eyes slowly and saw the stallion pausing over her poll. So close, so close to probable death. Her voice shook, "Ah I'm eternally sorry for leaving the herd's boundaries." She cringed away as he gave her a sharp look then turned to Ryder cockily. Sinclair tucked her knees in and then stood quietly, backing up in fear. Her mane flying about wildly, her eyes wide with fear. She saw the paint cross into the field, a perfect distraction, still she couldn't leave him alone. But, he was a stallion. She backed up a step again. She didn't know if she could trust him, for all she knew he could be a loner trying to steal her away. Or someone else that knew her as a foal. She cringed again as her attacker stepped towards the other. Flattened ears and barred teeth. She stepped back again.

Ryder stepped up into the field. The Bachelor stallion took a threatening step in his direction. His teeth barred as if he were ready to fight. Ryder's sides were still a bit thin from starvation, but there was no way he could let this monster possibly kill this mare. His blue eyes wandered over to her. She seemed scared and fearful. Her eyes darted between the stallions and the tall grass. He gave her a nod of approval as the horse in front of him whinnied angrily. Ryder turned to see him barreling toward him, and he reared defensively. The brown paint's teeth snapped shut as the two stallions collided with a sickening thud. The Bachelor's teeth snapped shut with a clack near Ryder's torn ear. Ryder used his hooves to claw at the bigger horse's chest, making long scrapes that spilled blood. He let a low hiss escaped his mouth as his opponent butted his head into his neck, knocking the breathe out of him. A sickening feeling rolled in Ryder's stomach as he fought to keep his inner demons inside of him. He wasn't going to kill this horse. He couldn't. He was just going to teach him a lesson. All horses were to be treated as equals.

As soon as the horses locked in combat, she turned and ran. Fearful of both of the animals. She didn't run too far though, for if the stallion from her herd came back, he could accuse her of trying to escape and she could be punished. She shivered, should it not have been for the other stallion she'd probably be dead or knocked out in the grass, bleeding. Then that would attract grassbeasts and they would gorge themselves on her carcass.
She shook her head as to dissipate the image and turned to look at the fight from the greater distance she was at now. It looked as if the stallions were evenly matched, but that the paint had just a smidgen more experience than the bachelor. Of course the bachelor was younger, and hadn't been to oh so much training. But he was failing his duty and now he could be punished by the snake. Sinclair lifted her darkened muzzle and whinnied, clear and light. Shaking still with the fear she took a few steps forwards, to better see the fight. She didn't know why she was compelled to, for if both are evenly matched both stallions could equally hurt her as much as the last.

Ryder closed his eyes as the Bachelor's teeth snapped close to his face. He used the opportunity to retaliate, kicking the stallion with his front hooves. He heard a grunt, and the stallion fell to the ground after losing his footing on a defensive mood. Ryder stood over him with a menacing glare. The younger stallion's eyes grew wide in shock. Did he really think that he was a good enough fighter to defeat a horse that used to fight for a living? Ryder snorted, placing a hoof on the stallion's neck. "You're going to leave, and if I ever see you beating anyone like that again, I'll end you without a moment of hesitation. Now, get up!" He said in a commanding tone. The scratched up stallion stood with a hesitant look before he galloped away from them with his tail tucked firmly between his legs.
The brown paint chuckled softly to himself before looking around for the mare. He spotted her standing not too far away, almost hidden by the tall grass around her. He walked slowly toward her. His heart still hammered in his chest, and blood trickled out of a few wounds on his body. None of them were that bad. A little aloe vera and ginger would have them healing nicely in no time. Ryder came to a stop a few horse lengths away. "Are you okay?" He asked with a concerned expression. He had no idea how far the beating had gone before he had arrived, but he was prepared to help her with any wounds that she might have.

The stallion walked towards her Sinclair and the mare trembled, standing and jumping further away but then he just stopped. He was still a few lengths away from her, but Sinclair cowered away a step then stepped forward, Make up your mind already idiot, "Who are you?" She tipped her head to the side, long mane falling away from her bright green eyes. "How... how can you make a... slave holder... cower in fear in only a few quick steps." He had after all, made her captor flinch away in fear and then actually run off, this should be a hint that he's dangerous, now why do I ignore it. She stood still, though she had stepped up to him her whole conscience wanted her to bolt off, this, he was dangerous. All stallions were.
Blood ran down her neck from a few bite marks, but the mare wanted the stallion no where near her. She ignored the cuts and bruising, waiting for an answer from this beast. She perked her ears towards him, bright eyes alight with curiosity as he began to answer her questions.

The brown paint flicked his tail at the mare's question. He should have figured that she would be defensive. She was a Bachelor brood after all and had probably lived with being beaten and forced into submission. His sides were still thin from the months of starvation that the Exiles had endured before coming to the Eastern Island. It was certainly a beautiful island despite the brutes that lived there. Ryder gave the mare a small smile, nodding his head in greeting. "My name is Ryder. I'm from the Exiles," he said, tilting his head in the direction of his group. He flinched a bit at the word 'slave-holder.' Was that what they called them? "He's a mindless brute. Showing any sort of power to those types of horses sends them cowering. Plus, I have a little experience with fighting that type of horse," he said. The scars that riddled his pelt was evidence of that. Ryder had once been hired to kill horses that thought they were so powerful that they could abuse and use others like that, and even though he didn't do that type of work any more, it still bothered him beyond belief to see others suffer like that. He supposed that it was just programmed into him to want to help others in need especially someone who couldn't defend themselves.
"You're bleeding. I know a thing or two about herbs if you'd like me to look at it," he said, looking at the mare's bite marks and bruises.

"Are you insinuating that we slaves are even more so stupid than a mindless brute, for those guards keep us from escaping almost everyday." She flattened her ears, wrong choice of words stallion. She shook her mane, green eyes glinting with a new look, pure relaxation. She no longer feared this stallion, this exile, the horses were weak now. If she had been with one of the larger stallions, Brutus or maybe someone else the horse would have been pounded into the ground.
"I haven't seen you before... Ryder." She drawled lazily stepping closer to him. "Pay no heed to my wounds, I'll be beat further if any notices that I was gone and then patched up. If they see I've been given punishment they'll likely stay away." She smiled and blinked slowly, she moved fluidly away from him now. Stopping only to look back again, "Why'd you stop him?"

If he could hit himself in the head, he would have. He shook his head, looking rather sheepish and embarrassed. "T-That's not what I meant at all. I-" He said, stopping to think this time before he spoke. Ryder's ears flicked back defensively as he spoke. The mare's green eyes burrowed into him as if they were judging him silently. Why in Chevalin's name did he have to be so awful with words?
Ryder nodded, giving her a small smile. He hadn't really thought of that, but it still worried him a bit that the wounds might get infected. "If you wish." He said, flicking his torn ear in her direction. She was definitely pretty, and he silently wished that she were apart of his own herd. Maybe they could have gotten to know each other more, but Ryder had a feeling that this mare was tougher than she seemed. At her question, Ryder looked at her with a smile. "I stopped him because I don't agree with what the Bachelors stallions do. They're monsters, and I plan on stopping them whenever I can." He paused for a moment before continuing. "Plus, I heard you screaming, and I couldn't help but to come see what was happening. When I saw him beating you like that.... I suppose I got a little angry," he said, thinking of all the rage he had felt as he had fought the slave holder.

Sinclair perked her ears, "you have a good heart, something you don't normally find in chevalin." She nodded respectfully at him. Her eyes wandered and she began to take in his sturdy build, paint markings, and eyes. Eyes you could look into and see one's soul through. She was too superstitious she decided, no this stallion wasn't like the others, but he wasn't her white knight coming to free her.
Sinclair stepped away then turned and began to canter to a stream. She dashed through the water before stopping in the middle and watching as rivulets of blood were washed away. She began to hum a tune, sweet and luring. She wondered if the curious exile had bothered to follow her.

Ryder gave her a small grin as she studied him. He felt his pelt grow hot under the spotlight, but he quickly shook off the feeling. Delvin had taught him to be more confident in his decisions and to make them like he meant them. As the mare trotted off, Ryder followed after her at a slower pace to a small stream that flowed nearby. He took a quick drink, suddenly realizing how thirsty he had been. He lifted his head as the mare began to hum pleasantly, and Ryder found himself swaying a bit to the rhythm. "I never got your name." He said, flicking his ears in her direction. Ryder had protected her, and he hadn't even gotten a chance to learn her name.

"Call me Cinderella then." She laughed, blinking the water away from her eye lashes. She trudged towards him in the water and whispered quietly into his ear, words floating like music through the air, "And you, you can be my Prince Charming." She turned away again and stepped back, nudging her cuts.

Ryder felt his face go hot with embarrassment as she whispered in his ear. "W-well, Cinderella, you've got quite a beautiful name," he said with a grin as she nudged her cuts. His blue eyes studied them carefully. They were still bleeding a bit, but he didn't think that they would leave any scars. "Are you sure you don't want to look at those? I don't have to wrap them up or anything, but some aloe could do them some good. I'd hate for them to scar," he said with a flick of his tail. His mane and tail had grown considerably since the last time he had rubbed it off, but he was sort of enjoying having a longer mane even though the slightly curly mane tended to get frizzy and messy.

Sinclair had that feeling, this horse wanted to help her and he'd probably not stop asking until she let him. "Ah, well fine." She dipped her muzzle in the water, blowing bubbles happily. "Thank you though, I believe I forgot to tell you that." She looked away, soaked mane plastered against her arabian-built neck. She climbed onto the bank, "Where can I find this aloe?" She then shook her wet coat free of water, watching as the rainbow colored drops fell into the water. Beautiful, she thought.

The brown paint almost sighed in relief when she agreed to let him treat her wounds. He tilted his head in the direction he had left his herbs. It was a short walk into the woods that would only take a moment. "No problem. I'm glad to help. I have some that I gathered before I heard you. I left them just over there," he said as he turned to walk that way. Ryder walked toward the herbs with a flick of his tail. The herbs had been for his herd, but if this mare needed them, it was worth it. That's what herbs were meant for after all, to help others.
