{ Akira | Slave Brood } "Two blocks, no farther than that. If you can't see anything by than you turn right around and come back. The moment you see something you come back. Do Not hang around to observe. We will gather and decide what we will do when we are sure of the presence or lack thereof of other horses."
A tiny half smile appeared ever so slightly on Akira's face as Kyanos sternly gave her the freedom to follow Mercedes along with strict instructions as to how far to go and when to return. Guess he's not all bad... Nodding quickly, she pivoted on her hind hooves and took off after the dainty pale form of Mercedes who had already gotten a head start down the dilapidated streets. Her black tresses bounced along her slender neck as she caught up to her new, soft-spoken companion. At Mercedes' startled reaction, Akira bowed her head slightly. "Sorry...guess it has been a while since I've interacted with anyone. I'm a bit rusty," she apologized, offering an awkward apologetic smile.
As the distant voices became clearer the further they went, the buckskin was quick to pick up on the sudden change in her companion's mood. Her breathing picked up and more than once she shivered, tossing her mane as she tried to calm herself. Akira knew the signs all too well. Something had Mercedes on edge, something she recognized...perhaps she even knew some of the faint voices. Whatever it was, it had Merce spooked. Curling her neck to lower her head to Mercedes' height, she nudged her shoulder softly with her muzzle in a reassuring fashion. "Hey...it's going to be alright. If anything happens, I'll be right here. I may not look like much, but I do know a thing or two about ditching pursuers. Take it from an old pro," she murmured quietly, a bit of optimism coating her voice. "...whatever they did, I won't let it happen again," she then added in a much more serious tone, the spirit holding strong behind her warm brown eyes. I can't let the ones around me suffer...not again...
At Merce's next statement, Akira nodded. "I highly doubt they're loners...we-" Pausing a moment, she reluctantly corrected herself. "They don't tend to congregate in groups, especially not in the middle of the fallen city. Too risky.. They have to be from a herd," she commented in response. Pricking her white-ringed ears forward, she gracefully darted into the alleyway alongside her pale companion, now focusing on the strange horses beyond the wreckage before them. There was no doubt about it...Kyanos definitely hadn't been imagining them. "I can hear at least two distinct male voices...I think the rest are mares," she whispered, glancing to Mercedes at her side, "More stallions means they have more muscle. Considering we only have Kyanos, we should be cautious. Though Evalynn is a war captive, meaning we have an edge if they don't recognize her. What are they doing here in the middle of the city...?"

Kyanos wasn't about to let them completely out of his radar. Even if he had let the two mares wander off, he kept his ears pealed, listening to their hoof-steps as they wandered away. He wasn't going to leave them out of his attention and he listened quietly to their conversation. He couldn't get past the fear that he had made the wrong decision to let them go... but he tried to shove those worries away. His thoughts were drawn out by a voice and he turned to see the peppy mare beside him. He didn't reply to her observation of it being just the three of them left, seeing no reason to, though a direct question he had trouble avoiding. He'd have to answer it. "It's hard to place the voices," He began, his one good ear still pointed toward where the other two mares had wandered while the torn broken one occasionally glanced at the mare. "but they don't sound familiar." He finally finished. His words were low, afraid to be heard by anyone else. His answer wasn't direct, as he didn't say yes or no, but it was directive enough. He doubted it was the Bachelors. He only hoped whoever it was was peaceful and not looking for a fight or to cause trouble.
His attention turned back to the streets when he heard the whispered voice of Akira bouncing off the walls. He practically held his breath to hear what it was she was saying. She sounded to be trying to comfort Mercedes and he took an anxious step forward, his muscles tense as he prepared himself to run of to defend them if it was needed. Then her voice turned more conversational though and he assured himself they were fine... for now. Don't go too far. He mentally demanded to them. He didn't want to have to run far if something came up. He was already itching with desire to go after them. His skin felt like it was crawling and with each passing moment he found himself regretting letting the two mares wander alone into the streets. His torn ear turned back to Iscah, though his gaze stayed set on the streets. "Have you discovered your gift yet?" His tone was more of a demand than a question. He wanted to know what sort of defense they would have were the need to fight to arise. He already knew the Olde captive's gift, he'd learned that the hard way. He knew the mares of the Bachelor herd were tough, or else they wouldn't survive such a life, and it could just be time for them to prove that strength. "Hurry up." He mumbled under his breath as he waited for them to get back with news on what they had found.

Mercedes gave Akira an encouraging smile, glad she wasn't doing this alone. Four years in the Bachelor herd, yet she was still uneasy about the terrain. Especially being so close to her former home... The mare sighed, flinching as Akira suddenly gave her a gentle nudge, turning towards her and lifting her head to affectionately tug on Akira's mane. "Thank you," she nickered, even though the buckskin's reassuring words didn't soothe her uneasy feelings. Mercedes continued on, one ear focused on Akira as she spoke about the loners and the other focusing on the voices. She frowned, glancing sideways at the former loner. "I'm sorry you were taken from that life, I'm sure you miss it dearly." There was an underlying tone in her voice, some kind of sadness that resonated from her heart. Mercedes missed her old herd, but she had no choice but to run. The thought made her freeze, her eyes widening slightly. Was he among the group? Mercedes strained her ears, trying to pick out his deep voice among the others. To her relief, and sorrow, he wasn't there. Merce let out a heavy sigh, picking up her hooves again and plodding forward.
As Akira mentioned the voices coming from a herd, Mercedes nodded, keeping her head low. "Exiles," she murmured, an echo of yearning in her soft voice. She recognized most of the voices, especially one of the mares'. Four years she'd been gone... Would they even recognize her? Would she recognize them? Her heart alternated between swelling with excitement and deflating in fear. What would they think? As they came closer to the group, Mercedes froze as she spotted a gray appaloosa among the group, her heart skipping a beat. "Addie..." Her old lover's name slipped from her lips before she could stop it, her eyes wide and fixated on the group. Her mind screamed to run, telling her to turn and hide in shame. Despite this, she couldn't move. She was frozen.

{ Akira | Slave Brood } An ear flicked to the side at the sudden tug on Akira's mane. Every new interaction with Mercedes or any of the others for that matter tested her resolve not to flinch or shy away when they did so. It was tough when for at least three years any touch with another meant danger. She could still remember the bachelor guard who'd gotten a mouthful of black tail before she'd managed to squeeze through a crack in the canyon wall and make her narrow escape. It hadn't been pleasant to say the least. Not to mention the last one who had ever touched her in a loving manner such as this had been...her mother. Though Jaxon was quickly making his way to that point, taking down the walls around her heart piece by tender piece. She still had a feeling it would be quite some time before she could learn to innately accept the gestures as friendly.
"I'm sorry you were taken from that life, I'm sure you miss it dearly."
Rattled back from her pool of thoughts, Akira smiled grimly. "Can't say it was a bad life...just wish I would have taken advantage of my freedom. Gone more places...seen more things... The rules of the land bridges didn't apply to us. Didn't have to get mixed up in herd squabbles either. Yet...I had the ability to go anywhere but always felt tethered to this island, where my mother laid to rest. Every time I stood on the beach, staring out on that land bridge to the island of Olde, where my ancestors lived...I just...couldn't do it. Lynnie was so brave...she saw her destiny and went racing after it. I wish I was half the mare she is," Akira explained quietly with only the soft click clack of her hooves against the rocky path. I guess the only thing I am good at is running away..., she added silently to herself.
Suddenly Mercedes came to a dead halt, mentioning something about Exiles and...an equine named Addie. She was so soft spoken it was almost hard for Akira to catch what exactly she said, but all she needed to see was the look on her pale companion's face and the way her knees locked in place. "Merce...? It's alright, we're still quite a ways off, we can go back. You don't have to do this..." Seeing little response from the tiny mare, Akira pursed her lips, knowing she had to sever whatever connection Merce was making in her head...else Kyanos really would have something to worry about. Using her height to her advantage, she skittered in front of the frozen mare, blocking her vision of the Exile group. "Merce...Merce look at me..," she murmured gingerly, resting her head against the mare's neck and feeling how her heart shuddered with the anxiety, "It's just you and me. There's no one else."

I may hear something.
Before Evalynn could stand up, Mercedes and Akira were out the large doors, going to investigate. Instantly, Evalynn's hopes rose, and she sprang up on suddenly nimble hooves, trotting to the doors, stopping beside Kyanos as he peered out, watching the two mares as they went down the street to see who was now in the city. The paintaloosa's ears pricked as her eyes scoured the streets, looking for any new horses. Could it possibly be Olde horses? If it was, she would be free!
...However.. Her natural paranoia kept her guard up, and she glanced sideways at Kyanos, wondering if he could hear what she could not. He had heard voices while she still heard nothing but the two mares fading hoof steps. If the horses Kyanos thought he heard were not Olde, there was no telling if they were other Bachelors', or other, less friendly horses. Lashing her tail uneasily, she looked back towards the street.
Evalynn flicked one ear back as Kyanos snapped a question at, she assumed, Iscah. It'd be pointless for him to ask her if she knew her gift, as she knew that he knew first hand just exactly what her gift was. Refusing to think of that night however, Evalynn stamped a hoof against the floor of the cathedral in frustration, waiting for the two mares to return.

Kyanos torn ear flicked toward the larger mare when she approached, seeming almost as up-tight as he was. He could just hear her thinking up a plot to get away. He was sure of it, she was counting on the horses being Olde. He wasn't a mind reader, he just knew the mind. If you'd been taken from your home the first horses you'd want to see were those from your herd, come to set you free. This of course made him even more anxious that it Wasn't Olde. Not only that but he was ready for the two mares to be back already. He was just as frustrated as the pintaloosa mare... he just didn't show it quite as outwardly as she did. The only visible sign of his tension was the storming look in his cloudy eyes.
As he awaited Iscah's reply he suddenly heard the mood of the mare's conversation change and he took a step forward, his ears perked forward as he listened. Something was wrong. They were much quieter now, practically whispering. He didn't hear their hooves moving... no, then he heard a quick scuttle of hooves echoing on the walls. Had they been found? Darn-it, he knew he shouldn't have let them go off on their own. For only an instant his attention turned to the two mares beside him. He could leave them here... Evalyne was a fighter... but he couldn't trust her not to run off, and then Iscah would be left to fend for herself. No, he wasn't splitting them up any more than they already were. In fact, he was fixing that mistake right now. "Come on." He demanded before he moved into a brisk trot in the direction the other two had gone, lifting his hooves a little higher than was normal to avoid tripping on anything.
