Snips and Snails and Puppy-dogs' tails Leaftail's Icarus and blueunicornj13's Leif Timing: Two weeks after the Bachelor/Olde war
It was a bright, sunny day. The tall grass of the Summer fields blew in a pleasant breeze, making it almost seem like it was an ocean of green with rolling waves that made their way over the swooping hills. The midday sun shone brightly on a grey, spotted colt's back as he carefully darted through the tall vegetation, using it as cover to keep unwanted eyes from spotting him. Leif had sneaked away from the watchful sight of his parents. Both of them had been quite busy as of late. His mother guarded the herd, and his father had just been taken on as a high guard. He wasn't too sure what that meant, but it did have the word 'high' in it, so it must have been pretty awesome. While his mother, Effie, normally kept him under close supervision, there was days, much like this one, where she had to go on patrols and left him alone with a small group of other foals. The other foals' parents sat around mostly, occasionally looking over to make sure that they were all behaving, but these days were also the perfect chances for an adventurous foal such as himself to venture off into more 'uncharted' territory.
A giggle escaped him at the thought of his crafty escape. It had been so easy! The guards should be ashamed of themselves for letting such a young horse get past them. 'Just more witnesses to my clever ideas and daring escapes. I'll be a guard in no time!' Leif thought to himself, a playful grin pulling up the corners of his mouth. His long legs carried him over the hilly terrain as his blue eyes looked around him for anything interesting. Hopefully, he'd be able to find something interesting before he had to head back to his herd. His mother would be getting back around dark, and he definitely didn't want to get into any sort of trouble with her. "Mama would not be very happ-" Leif paused mid-sentence, coming to a halt as his ears shot forward to the sound of something ahead. Leif smirked, wagging his tail excitedly. Maybe it was a predator or something else that he could bring back to the herd to show how strong and tough he was! The colt gathered his legs under him, putting his weight onto his back legs. With a quick shake of his tail, like a cougar on the prowl, Leif jumped through the vegetation between himself and whatever was hiding in front of him. "Hi yah!!!" The grey colt busted through the grass, bumped into something solid on the other side.

"Dad, I'm bored!" The cry came from the newest addition to the Bachelor herd, and it was a cry that pierced the ears of the little foal's father. Miles pinned his ears back as his son glared up at him, a frown upon the young colt's face. The bigger blue roan shook his head and nudged his son lightly. "I'm sorry, but why don't you go and play with the other foals?" Miles replied, and watched as Icarus' jaw dropped. "They're boring too! Ugh, you're no help!" Icarus shot back, snorting and trotting away to go and find his mother. Maybe she would be more help than his father was. Too bad his mother was just as boring. She just laughed at him, gave him a couple of grooming nips, and told him the same exact thing. Parents, what good were they if they didn't take you on cool adventures to see the other herds? Why didn't they venture away from the herd in general? The little blue roan didn't understand why everyone was so 'okay' with staying in one place. After reassuring the palomino mare he'd go and be with the other foals, Icarus waited till she looked away to dash off.
The Summer Fields had tall grass this time of the year and it was perfect to hide in. The small colt jumped through the grass, his little form popping up above the grass tips every so often. The commotion caused birds and bugs to take to the skies, in which Icarus felt the need to try and chase after them. "Come back you scaredy cats!" he shouted, rearing up as another bird took flight in front of him. Landing, he puffed up his chest and shook his short tail. In his mind, he was the ruler of the tall grasses, chasing out his subjects who were too weak to be in his presence.
As he was gloating in his own mind about his image, when something ran into him. Icarus let out a scream that sounded very girlish. He rolled a few feet before stopping and sitting up. Shaking his head, he quickly got up and faced the thing that ran into him. "Hey! Haven't you ever heard of 'excuse me' before?" he snapped, pinning his tiny ears back. The being in front of him was another horse, a foal, much like himself but one that was older. He was grey, had spots, and dark hair. Icarus had never seen him before and quickly registered that the foal must belong to another herd. "And how dare you run into a Bachelor stallion!" Icarus added, trying to be intimidating now.
Hey, it worked with the older stallions, why not with him?

Leif grunted, feeling air rush out of his lungs as he collided with the unknown form. He quickly backpedaled away at the sound of a shrill scream that pierced through the quiet, afternoon air. Birds shot out of the grass, clearing the area after hearing the calls of whatever Leif had run into. The colt grinned happily as his blue eyes settled on another horse. Another colt just like him! Oh, this was so exciting! Maybe he'd be able to befriend the stranger, and they could go on all sort of adventures or something. Leif's mind rattled off a thousand different things they could do, but his train of thought was cut off at the blue roan colt's sharp tone. Leif pouted for a moment, frowning at the sudden loudness before giving the stranger a toothy smile. "Sorry! I didn't mean to run into you. I thought you were a grass beast or something." Leif explained, waving his short tail as he spoke. His curly mane was in disarray, sticking out at odd angles from his unexpected collision. At the roan colt's next statement, Leif's gaze fell on the scar on his face. "Oh wow! You're a Bachelor? Those x scars are so cool, and they make you look so tough! I wish I had one too." Leif said excitedly, trying his hardest to remain still from all of his giddiness.
"My name is Leif by the way. I'm an Exile, but you probably already knew I wasn't from your herd." Leif introduced himself, raising his head proudly when he stated that he was an Exile. His parents and the guards he had stopped to talk to had taught him to be proud of his lineage, and Leif definitely wasn't letting them down on that. Plus, it wouldn't look very good if a -guard-to-be didn't think highly of his own herd.
He glanced down at the younger colt's puffed out chest where it appeared he was trying to intimidate him, but Leif remained oblivious to his obviously flustered demeanor. "So whatcha doing out here? Are you exploring 'cus that's what I'm doing. I couldn't find anyone to play with in my herd, so I thought I'd make my own fun." Leif grinned cheerfully, not thinking of any dangers there might be being so close to the Bachelor herd alone. Who knew what they would do to him if they caught him there? "Wanna come? I bet there's a ton of stuff for us to do together."

'Oh wow! You're a Bachelor? Those x scars...'
Icarus stared at the other colt, not sure why he wasn't scared. In fact, he seemed amazed to have run into a Bachelor herd member, and Icarus felt very self conscious about the "x" on his forehead. It was thinner than most, and supposedly the bigger yours was, the tougher you were. But, Icarus was tough, and no matter how thin the "x" was, he was going to show this colt that...
'My name is Leif by the way. I'm an Exile...'
An Exile? Icarus remembered his parents mentioning the other herd on their island. They were from the...north? No, that was the Olde. The south! Yes, the Exiles were from the south. He couldn't remember why they were on the island, but his dad had mentioned them being decent allies. Whatever that meant. He let the other colt talk, letting his chest deflate and he took on a more friendlier appearance. "The name's Icarus. And yes, I'm a Bachelor!" he announced, trotting up to Leif and lifting his tiny tail high up and proud. The grey colt mentioned that he, too, couldn't find a decent playmate and Icarus liked the idea of running off to go on an adventure. Maybe Exiles were better playmates than his silly herd mates anyways.
"Me? I was looking for an adventure! Everyone is so boring. No one wants to do anything but stand around and let flies eat them. Not me! I want to go and have fun. I'm the best at fun in my herd!" Icarus said, nodding his head in self approval. "Where were you going? I'd like to go too!"

Leif's ears perked up as Icarus introduced himself, trotting forward with a prideful skip to his step. He chuckled quietly at the younger colt's demeanor. Had he been that cocky when he was younger? ...Yeah, he probably had been and probably still was for a matter of fact! "Nice to meet you, Icarus." Leif said, practicing the rehearsed greeting his parents had taught him when he was little. They had said something about it being 'the polite and nice thing to say.' That and it was nice meeting another foal up to the same antics he was. It wasn't every day that he found someone as adventures as himself.
"I know! They can be so boring sometimes. I'd much rather find something fun to do than sit around all day long." Leif ranted, rolling his eyes at the thought of how boring it would be to still be with his herd. He'd still probably be playing some sort of baby-game that one of the parents had come up with to keep them busy. Blegh! "Good! 'Cus I'm the best at having fun in my herd. I'm sure the two of us combined will find something super awesome to do!"
Leif grinned widely, wagging his tail excitedly as Icarus asked him where he was going. "I'm going to this river not too far away that my papa showed me the other day. We saw tons of cool animals there like fish, and we even saw water dogs!" His tone was filled with enthusiasm and excitement that never seemed to dim with him. It seemed that Leif was always happy about something or another.

"You're telling me! You think most would want to run around and play on a day like this!"
Leif seemed cool, at least in Icarus' book. The colt had announced that he was the most fun in his own herd, and that made Icarus happy. He hoped the other colt would live up to his self proclamation.
"A river, huh? That sounds like fun! We can chase fish and if those water dogs are there, we can bother them too!" he replied, suddenly itching to get going. He let out a tiny laugh and reared up slightly, before twisting around. If Leif was talking about the river that was nearby, then he knew where they were going. "I think I know the way...let's go!" Icarus kicked up his heels and shot forward. "Last one there is a filly!"
The grass tickled his sides as he ran ahead. The river wasn't too far, and there weren't any obstacles that might slow him down. It was a straight shot and he thought that by being smaller, he'd be faster and get to the river first. More creatures that were resting in the grass got disturbed by the foal running, and moved out of the way, making this easier for him. 'I'll show him that Bachelors are number one!' he thought, his expression turning focused. Just a few more paces...
Icarus pushed himself, feeling his legs stretch out as far as they could go. Almost...there...ha!
The grass suddenly disappeared and in front of him was the slow moving, cool waters of the river. A big smile stretched across his face as he slowed down, tail flipping upwards again. "Ha...I..." he started, and lost his voice as he tried to catch his breath.

Leif bucked slightly in excitement of the fun things they were going to do when they got to the river. There would be plenty of things that would be lots of fun to do. "Yeah! Maybe we'll be able to catch some of those fish or maybe some frogs!" He said as his new companion darted forward, calling back over his shoulder. "Hey! No fair! You got a head start!" Leif called out, smirking playfully as he shot forward after the blue roan colt. No way was he going to be a filly!
The grass was a blur on either side of him as Leif crashed through the vegetation. If he knew exactly where he was, the river that was serving as their finish line wasn't too far away. The bigger, heavier colt sped along after his feisty, little friend. His legs stretched out beneath him, and Leif was soon right behind Icarus. He panted as he pushed his legs to go faster. It wouldn't be much longer before they were there, and he was still a little bit behind.
The green grass fell away in front of him, and the river appeared, slowly trickling down stream. Leif skidded to a halt at beside Icarus, panting lightly from the sudden exertion. "Haha! You're pretty... fast! I'll... have to remember that the next time... we have a race." Leif joked between pants as he tried to catch his breath.
The river was a pretty cerulean blue, and the sunlight reflected off of its surface, making it almost look as though it was sparkling. "Come on! Let's go find some fish." Leif said, walking toward the river bank. He scanned the water for any signs of the silvery scaled creatures. His eyes scanned the water's surface, trying to spot some for them to chase, and a playful smile pulled up the corners of his mouth as he spotted the water ripple not to far away where a small school of fish swam. "Look! I found some!"

Icarus gave his newest friend a big grin as he noticed the other colt behind him. He had won! Pride swam through his veins as his breath slowly returned to him. He lifted his head and his grin turned slightly cocky. "Well, if you forget, I'll remind you," he replied, pawing the ground. Leif started towards the river and Icarus trotted over to the older colt, ears perked with interest. Would they find fish?
It only took a few moments before Leif shouted his discovery. Icarus looked quickly to try and see what Leif saw. There! The ripples were fading at this point, but he was sure he saw movement. Excitement raced through him as a splash sounded over to their right. The fish were sure excited today. A flash of silver passed in front of them, and Icarus leaped forward. He landed in the shallows, water splashing up on his chest. The fish swam away, and Icarus laughed. "That's right, be scared of the mighty Bachelor and Exile stallions!" he shouted, looking back at Leif, and laughing.
He twisted around and pawed the water. "Come on in! It's nice and cold!" he said, rearing up and splashing down. He trotted out of the water, did a u-turn and then kicked off the ground. He raced into the river, letting out an excited squeal as he entered the water. The water was so clear. He looked down and could literally see his hooves. There was another fish! Icarus jumped at it, laughing as it swam away like the other one did.

The fish broke the surface of the water with their fins as they swam just below the surface. Leif giggled with delight at the sight of the scaly critters. They had found some! How cool was that? Leif's ears swiveled toward Icarus as the colt trotted up to the bank, and when he leaped forward after the fish, Leif was quick to follow. His hooves splashed water around him, creating more ripples of disturbance on the surface of the slow-flowing river. As the fish darted away from their hooves, Leif giggled, chasing after them until they swam into the deeper parts of the river. "Oh yes! Be very afraid of the mighty Leif and Icarus!" Leif chanted in return, turning back to look over at his new friend.
The cool water swirled around his legs where he stood. He could easily spot the smooth, river stones under the crystal clear water. It was hard to beat a nice, cool swim in the river when the water was this clear. "Wow! The water is so clear today. I wonder how far you can see if you went into deeper water." Leif pondered aloud, trotting through the shallows and splashing water with each step. When he got close to Icarus, Leif reared up on his hind legs, coming down hard on the water beneath him. Droplets of water cascaded down on both of them, and a fit of laughter erupted from Leif as he darted away.
Leif plunged into the deeper water, feeling it soak through his pelt. His legs paddled below him, taking him around in small circles. Looking down, Leif could see his lower half all the way down to his hooves in the clear river. A smile crossed his face as an idea popped into his head, and Leif ducked his head under the surface, opening his eyes once he was all the way under. He could see the fish that they had been chasing swimming not too far away, swimming in a small school in their underwater home. The grey colt stuck his head back above the water, taking a deep breath before looking around for Icarus. "Icarus! Come look at this! You can see so clearly down here." Leif called out from where he swam.

Icarus watched as Leif went into the deeper water and for the first time he felt some apprehension. Icarus hadn't learned how to swim, yet. Being in the shallows was perfectly fine. He could stand on the sand and go in until the water hit his stomach, but to go any deeper had the colt feeling his first taste of fear. He watched in awe as Leif easily kicked his legs, swimming in circles. He almost gasped as the older colt dunked his head in, but held it back. When Leif called out to him, Icarus hesitated.
"C-coming!" he called, unable to speak up about his inability to swim.
Icarus took a deep breath, before slowly taking a few steps forward. This shouldn't be too hard, right? He'd seen his father cross the river with no issues, though his father could technically walk on water (which was super cool). The water rose around him and Icarus tried hard to keep from showing fear on his face. It was up to his chest now, and he jumped up a little, trying to imitate Leif's swimming. 'Kick with you legs...kick...agh...kick, go forward, kick...' he thought to himself as he tried to get himself to float.
One last jump brought the colt forward enough to actually get him to start "swimming". The water was up to his neck and he kicked quickly to keep his head up. His nostrils flared as he felt the ground dip under him and when he couldn't find his footing, he panicked. "L-Leif! I think I might need...help!" he called, trying to turn around and head back to the shallows.

Leif had learned at a young age how to swim. Both of his parents had a love for water, and they had found it useful for him to learn this valuable ability. Plus, it had been a lot easier for him than some foals since his father could manipulate water at will. Ryder had made sure Leif's head had stayed above the water as he learned the movements he needed to make to do it himself.
Paddling around in the slow-flowing river, Leif had absolutely forgotten that he might not have been taught how to swim yet. In fact, he wasn't even sure how old Icarus was to begin with. His waterlogged ears flicked toward the other colt, hearing him splash into the water close by. Leif noticed Icarus's slightly awkward movements as he tried his hardest to swim.
Just as Icarus hit the deeper water, Leif spotted the fear on his face and swam forward, kicking his legs hard through the water to get to him. "I'm coming!" Leif shouted to the struggling colt. Once he reached Icarus's side, Leif pushed him back toward the shallows with his muzzle. Thank goodness, the bank wasn't too far away. He might have been a strong swimmer by himself, but Leif didn't know how well he'd be able to swim if he had to make sure Icarus's head stayed above the water along with his own.
With one last shove, Leif felt the ground beneath his hooves, and he quickly clambered up until it only touched his knees. His expression filled with concern as he turned back to look at Icarus. "Are you okay? I didn't really think about if you knew how to swim or not. I'm sorry."

The water was pulling him under, and Icarus kicked quickly to keep his head up. Every few seconds, he slipped under, his eyes shutting as the cold water hit him. He gasped for air, trying his hardest to stay afloat long enough for Leif to get to him. For a few seconds, he thought of his family, his mom and how she would look to find her son dead in the river. What about his father? Would he be disappointed too?
Just as Icarus thought he was slipping under for good, Leif came up and started to push him back towards the shallows. Icarus kicked as hard as he could to help his buddy get him to safety. As soon as his hooves hit the ground, Icarus quickly got to the point where the water was only up to his ankles, shaking his wet fur off, and coughing water out of his lungs. He heard Leif apologizing and took a few moments to catch his breath. Once he was breathing normally, he gave the other colt a big grin, trying to hide the fact that he almost drowned. "I'm fine. It's okay, I should've said something...but now I'll have to get dad to teach me how to swim! Or how to walk on water...that'd be better I think..." he explained, not understanding that his father's gift was unique and he'd unlock his own one day.
He shook himself out one more time, his fur poofing up in some spots. He looked around, and frowned. "I thought there would be water dogs here...that's lame..." he said, noticing the lack of fauna to bother in the area. He looked up at the sky and noticed the sun had only slightly moved. They had more time to hang out and maybe go on a real adventure. "What do you want to do next?"

Leif grinned, seeing a smile on Icarus's face after he had caught his breath. He climbed out of the water and shook himself off. Water droplets went flying around him, leaving his mane a curly mess. "Yeah! Swimming is lots of fun. Your dad can walk on water? Mine can move the water with his mind too!" Leif said, remembering when his father had shown him his gift for the first time. It had been an amazing thing to see, but it wasn't as cool when his father chased him around to be bathed. Leif would much rather go swimming than be forcefully scrubbed with floating orbs of water.
The grey colt frowned at Icarus's words, looking around at the lack of animals to harass. This had been more boring than he had thought it was going to be. 'Where had those waterdogs gone anyhow?' They had just been there the other day. They couldn't have gone too far, right? "Ummmm." Leif mumbled, frowning in concentration as he thought of something they could do next. It had been a lot of fun chasing fish, but it was hard to chase things when you were all alone. "We could go look for those waterdogs if you want. I bet they aren't that far away. Unless you want to do something else. I'm totally up for anything." Leif said with a toothy grin.

Hearing that they had something in common, Icarus' ears perked up. "You're dad can do that too!? That's so cool!" he said, wagging his tail excitedly. "Can your mom do anything? Mine supposedly can do stuff with light, but she's new with it." Having parents that could do mystical things was pretty cool, and Icarus hoped that one day he could be just like his father in that way. He could see himself, standing over his herd, guarding it from the dangers of Chevalin with his powers. In his head, he dodged predators, used water to smack Olde horses in the face, and light to blind them. Of course, in reality, he looked pretty funny making sound effects and jumping around. "Ha, take that Oldey! And that, bssst! You can't see! Splash!" Icarus, jumping around wildy, ended up tripping over his long foal legs and landed on his bottom. He let out a loud laugh, shaking his head.
Leif spoke up again and Icarus put on a thoughtful expression. "Let's go look for them! I'm sure they're down the river somewhere...I think if we follow the river north we can hit the beaches! They show up more there, I think...I mean that's what dad says. He won't take me, but I guess we could go now." Icarus explained, getting up and shaking the sand off of him. With a flick of his tail, Icarus started northward at a bouncy trot. "If they aren't there by the time the sun goes down, we can try again tomorrow!"

Leif nodded vigorously, smiling widely as he thought of his dad's special gift. His parents had both shown their abilities to him and had explained that he would unlock his own when the time was write, and the young colt had thought it was the coolest thing in the world. "Yeah! I didn't know that others could do what my dad could. That's so awesome!" Leif said enthusiastically, wagging his tail. "My mom can breathe underwater for short a little while. She's new with it too though, so she can't stay under for very long." He explained. The idea of having a super power of his own one day was so exciting. He couldn't wait to do whatever it was he had to do to figure out what his gift was and use it to protect his herd. It was going to be awesome! Leif returned his attention from his daydreaming to find Icarus bouncing around, pretending that he himself had unlocked his gift. It all came crashing down as Icarus managed to trip over one of his lanky legs, falling onto his rear. Leif laughed, hopping forward a little.
"They've got to be somewhere nearby. They were just here the other day... Going to the beach sounds like a lot of fun! Let's go!" Leif said, turning to trot down stream. His eyes scanned the river banks, looking for the lanky, furred creature they were looking for. His ears swiveled around at different angles, trying to catch any sign that waterdogs might be nearby. The occasional fish plopped in the water, causing him to snap his head in the direction of the noise to find nothing in sight. "So what do you do in your herd for fun?" Leif asked, trying to fill the silence that had set in after they had started their excursion.
