As the pair traveled, Icarus slowed down so that he and Leif were side by side as they traveled, Leif being the closest to the water, as Icarus did not want to accidentally fall in. He made a mental note to get his dad to teach him how to swim, as he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of anyone again if he were to encounter water in the near future.
"So, what do you do in your herd for fun?" Leif had asked, leaving Icarus to ponder. Most of the foals in his herd were older than him, the youngest at least a year older than him. He mostly spent his time with his parents, as he had yet to create any real bonds with the other foals. As another fish splashed in the water, Icarus answered. "I've seen the other foals play tag, and hide-and-go-seek. The colts will sometimes spar and imitate the older stallions by being mean to the fillies, but if the adults can do it, I guess it's okay..." He trailed off, hearing his father's voice in his head. "You are to respect and be nice to everyone, including mares and fillies. They may not seem like your equal, but they will help you if you treat them with kindness." He huffed, and shook his head. Dad always knew what was best, right?
"I usually like bothering the adults for fun. They get so annoyed and can't do anything! It's so funny. Dad doesn't like me doing it, but I still do." Icarus let out a tiny laugh and puffed out his chest at how disobedient he could be.
Suddenly a louder splash pulled his attention from being "manly", and he looked around Leif's body to see what had caused it. Looking at the pair from the river was a tiny, otter-like creature, it's black eyes reflecting the sun. Icarus blinking and nudged Leif slightly. "Is that a water dog?" he asked, admitting to not really knowing what a water dog was. Hey, he had to put up appearances. The creature slipped under the water and Icarus stopped walking, ears perked and tail alert. "Where'd it go? Come back!"

Leif listened intently to his new friend as he told him what he did in his herd. The foals were mostly around his age in his own, but it was sometimes difficult to play: one being blind and the other a few years older than himself. But he loved them both just the same. He thoroughly enjoyed leading Dawne by the red scarf she worn around her neck, helping to take her on his little adventures. And Kale was a bunch of fun! They'd always find really cool bugs and animals to look at, and some times they raced or played hide-and-seek. Life would certainly be incredibly boring if he didn't have his friends to play with, and he loved to make new ones too! "Hide-and-seek is really fun! I play that sometimes with my friends." Leif said, wagging his tail excitedly at the thought of all of the fun games he had learned over his short time growing up in the Exile herd. Leif's brows narrowed though when Icarus mentioned being mean to fillies. Why would they pick on them? "Why'd you guys do that? Fillies aren't bad. One of my best friends is a girl." Leif was utterly befuddled at the thought of being purposefully mean to someone. His father and mother had always told him to be nice and polite, and picking on someone didn't sound like lot of fun.
The grey colt's ears swiveled around toward the river as Icarus pointed toward a small, dark creature near the water. A wide grin pulled back his lips, revealing pearly white teeth at the sight of the water dweller. "A waterdog!! We found one!" He shouted excitedly, nearly jumping up and down from the joy of finding what they had come for. When the waterdog flopped back into the water, Leif's face fell slightly, and he leaned over the bank, peering into the water to see if he could still see it. "Come back! We just wanna play!" Leif called after the otter-like creature. His blue eyes scanned the water, looking for any signs of where it might have gone. Another splash made his head snap up. "There it is!" Leif said, pointing with his muzzle to the furry creature swimming nearby. Its movements were lithe in the water as it swirled around, twisting it's body and playing in the river. Leif smiled happily, watching the waterdog as it swam. "I wish I could swim like that. That'd be so much fun! Have you ever seen one them before?" He asked Icarus, glancing over at the younger colt for a moment before looking back at the playing creature.

"Why'd you guys do that? Fillies aren't bad..."
Icarus felt his face heat up at Leif's words. He tried to think of some way to explain his herd's culture, but nothing came up. He pinned his ears back a little as he took in the other colt's words, not understanding Leif's own confusion. It was normal for mares and fillies to be on the bottom, right? It was okay to be friends, but at the end of the day...they were still girls and still treated differently than boys. But, to save face and to not lose his new friend, Icarus stood up a little straighter. "I-I didn't say that I did that, I was talking about the older foals. Dad tells me to be nice, so I'm nice," he corrected, watching as Leif's attention got drawn to the water dog.
Icarus moved next to Leif on the river bank, watching the animal swim around. He did admire the quick little thing, almost jealous of the swimming abilities the water dog possessed. If he could swim like that, he wouldn't have been such a burden on Leif earlier. His ear turned towards Leif as the colt asked him a question and he shook his head. "No...this would be my first one!" he explained, looking back at the water dog. "It makes it look so easy...like...it's flying under water..." He trailed off and got a determined look on his face.
The blue roan colt took a step towards the water, ears perked forward. He ignored the water dog as he entered the river, getting about knee deep before stopping and looking back at Leif. "I'm going to try and swim! I want to be like the water dog!"

Leif was so confused about this new information his friend had given them, not understanding that all herds weren't like his own. This was so odd to hear that colts were singling out fillies to tease and be mean to, not that he didn't do his fair share of teasing, but it was all friendly. He'd never seen someone be really mean to someone on purpose... aside from the horses that were fighting during the war though. That had been the most scared he had been in his entire life. Leif's ears perked up as Icarus's voice brought him back to the present, and his blue eyes looked down at the younger colt, oblivious to the embarrassment on his friend's face. "That's good. My mama and papa taught me to be nice too. Plus, I'd rather have more horses to play with instead of them not liking me. Then I have more foals to play with." Leif said, giving Icarus a toothy grin.
The water dog paddled through the water a safe distance from the onlooking colts. Its shorter legs carried it through the clear water with ease as it ducked underneath the surface only to resurface a short distance away. It almost looked as though the creature was teasing them with its obviously superior swimming skills. "Yeah, I've only seen a waterdog a couple of times, and my mama and papa bring me a lot. I guess they're pretty rare." Leif said in awe of the swimming creature in front of them. Watching it swim was so incredible! "I know right? It does look like it's flying in the water."
Leif turned back to speak to Icarus and saw the other colt walking toward the river, a determined expression on his face. His brows narrowed in slight concern, wondering what Icarus could be doing before following after him. His legs sloshed around in the cool water, creating ripples across the calm surface. The grey foal hurried along, catching up to the roan colt before he got too far away. "You're gonna try and swim again? Okay!" Leif exclaimed, excited to see if Icarus would be able to swim this time. He trudged further into the river, feeling the ground beneath him give away as he began paddling his legs to carry himself along. "Come on! Let's swim like that waterdog! I'll push you back like last time if you need help."

Icarus had yet to see the war first hand, as he was born after the first battle, so the little teasing and fights the colts did with the fillies was all he had to go by on his herd's behavior. To him, it was part of life and it was odd that Leif was so surprised about it. Were the herds really that different from each other? It wasn't something to dwell on the mind of the tiny foal for long, as he started to concentrate on going deeper into the river.
Leif had joined him and Icarus took a moment to watch what the grey and white colt was doing. He noticed Leif kicking his legs in a pattern and his gaze slipped back to his own long, skinny legs. He started walking deeper into the water, following Leif's pattern and soon found himself bobbing at the surface of the shallows. The water was only up to his chest, so he could easily get his footing back if he felt like he was slipping up. Icarus did a little circle until he got the hang of this weird kicking motion, then descended into deeper water. His confidence was high and he was sure he got this whole swimming thing this time!
"I...I think I got it!" he exclaimed, his ears perking forward with excitement. The kicking was really helping and he was soon paddling alongside his new friend. The waterdog caught his attention again, and Icarus shoved his muzzle into the water, snorting bubbles at the creature, before laughing. "It was easier than I thought...ha! Look at me! Dad's going to be so proud!"

The grey, spotted colt swam into the deeper water where he had last seen the furry, brown creature they had been watching. He ducked his head underneath the river's surface, opening his eyes to see if he could spot it under the water. There! A flurry of bubbles gave away the waterdog's position, and Leif resurface with a grin, taking a deep breath of air. His curly mane was plastered to his neck, tangling into knots at the ends. His mother would certainly have a great time getting those out when he arrived back home.
Leif paddled back toward Icarus who seemed to be watching what he was doing. Catching onto the other colt's way of learning, Leif paddled forward, emphasizing his movements for Icarus to see. Lift. Kick. Lift. Kick. He repeated the pattern, kicking his legs to propel himself through the water. Swimming had become second nature to him. Spending lots of time by the water with his parents, he had learned quite a bit about the sport.
His blue eyes glanced over to where he had last seen Icarus when he heard his friend splash into the shallow waters with him. A playful grin pulled up the corners of his mouth, showing off his white teeth at the sight before him. Icarus was swimming! He had done it! "You're swimming! That's so awesome! I bet your dad will be super happy when you tell him that you learned how to swim and all by yourself too!" Leif agreed excitedly, swimming forward with Icarus now at his side. He broke out into a fit of giggles as the roan colt blew bubbles in the water in front of him, and Leif couldn't help but mimic the gesture, blowing air into the water in front of him to create ripples and bubbles that burst just past his snout. "There's the waterdog again. Let's swim after him and see where he goes."
