Loyalty and losses *Note, this story takes place 13 years prior to the actual storylineArturo
For half an hour they where walking now and not a single word had been exchanged in between the two colts. Anger boiled in the Arturo's chest, chocking his throat. He didn't know where it came from, the first warm sunbeams friendly warmed the lands, little flowers had started to flourish. The air was clean and smelled fresh and new. Everything should be good. No there was nothing good and everything felt amiss. Acorn, Arturo's father had just died in winter and the wound in his heart was still open and bleeding. It hurt, yes it did. He was alone now, there was no family for him left, no mother, no siblings and no relatives. His family had been small and unrecognizable and so it went on with him, no one recognized him and no one felt responsible for the adolescent colt of 16 years. He would soon turn 17 and Arturo felt himself to be capable enough to make it without the help of others. He had grown stubborn, and this anger he carried around with him was consuming. Since his father had been training him since his youth, he never had another knight to train him. Now as his father was dead, they had to find him another knight who would train him. They had shoved him together with Marius to finish a little training mission together and to improve Arturo's team work. Since he had been very solitary with his father his whole young life, they thought it important for the colt to learn to work together with other individuals.
Arturo glared over to the champagne tobiano, he was bigger than Arturo but a little bit leaner. He couldn't stand the silence anymore. "Hey Marius, ..." actually the two colts didn't even know each other, they had been introduced by an advisor who had sent them on their way. "... have you heard of the birth of this filly. They say she is so beautiful, she will be Vasska's Queen. Valentine has chosen her for him right after her birth and she is now promised to Vasska." Arturo wasn't sure about his feelings about this. Vasska was already 18 years old, just two years older as him. Wouldn't it be awkward to have such a young mate? Arturo lately had found out, that he liked to watch the fillies, but the ones that where just as old as him. He remembered Obscura, his childhood friend and his belly started to flutter. It became an awkward mixture of anger and enarmoured feelings. His stomach prickled.

The sun wrapped around Marius's dull coat, but warmed it. Around them was a world of beauty and life, hope and prosperity. Yet blood and battles lurked in the past. Memories of death and catastrophes hung in the air, whispering chilling stories. Marius wasn't sure if he believed in ghosts, spirits of another time, another place. He wondered if his sister was a ghost, still wandering around searching for her love. With a sigh Marius wondered if anything he had been told was true. Did unicorns really exist? Would they ever come back to this earth? As the sunlight touched his back he flicked his tail in slight annoyance, the questions he had crept all around him. He had no one to ask them too. His mother would give him one answer, his father another. Maruis had no one to trust since his sister's death, no one was left. He snorted again, a chill running through him. The stallion could hear his sister's gentle voice, telling him everything way okay. He could see her beautiful soft eyes, the ones he enjoyed playing with as a foal. She had once been the one he looked up too yet now there was no one. Though could someone really be gone?
The question lurked in his mind for quite awhile as he walked along, thinking it over. It was then he turned to speak to the other male beside him. "Arturo, do you think when someone dies they're really just gone? Or is there more? He gazed off into the sky and looked away at the lavish meadows of grass around them. As soon as he had spoken the brown male had let out some news. Marius thought that over too, taking in each of his words. The polo tics of the herd was something his father had got into, something Marius never understood. He didn't care who the king married, yet at the same time he found himself curious about the affairs of Vasska. The stallion that would one day rule this place Marius didn't know well, nor did he want to know. "I heard. It's a rather idiotic concept. She might be the most beautiful in the land, but what if the King can't stand her? What if she grows and shows little beauty? And why must Vasska need a heir, a foal, or even a wife so suddenly? I don't know what you think, but it just all sounds unreasonable!" The stallion exclaimed and turned his head back to Arturo, curious to his reaction.

Are they gone? Yes. "Yes Marius, they vanish. You will never see them again and there is no one who will replace them." Arturo answered fretful. He didn't knew that Marius had lost his mother and wondered why he would ask him such a thing, didn't it hurt enough? Did he have to ask him about death as well? His mother and father gone, he felt so lost inside, would you ask him if he feels good? Yes everything alright. He pressed his feelings down but they kept creeping up his throat and he choked on his suppressed emotions. His hopes where different, they didn't linger on this earth anymore, they went with the unicorns. The Great Compromiser forgives the equines of Olde and takes them under his protection once more. "If there is something after death, we can hope they are with the Unicorns again, protected by them, living a life without pain." He sighed and shook his mane, what a beautiful thought, once life was over he would see his parents again. It would be nice, at least once more.
... a rather idiotic concept... Anger started to boil up again, the two males had so many issues to deal with, they were short-tempered and hurt. "I think it's not idiotic. Valentine must have sensed something about her, she will be a good queen. Why should the unicorns let him choose a queen that will not be worthy of his son and their heritage. And of course Vasska needs a heir! He is the only successor of Valentine and he has to continue their Unicorn blood, no one else would be worthy of being a King to the herd of Olde." Arturo snorted and turned his head away. He was annoyed by Marius and his social skills certainly lacked. He didn't knew what to talk about with the colt and he felt a little bit sorry for his short outburst, but on the other hand Arturo knew he was right. His father had taught him how important faith was and how important the king was to the herd, descending from the unicorns directly - from a son of the Great Compromiser. A lot of magic lies in the blood of the Olde herd and certainly Valentine knew what he did. He finally turned back to Marius and looked at him. "Don't you have faith?"

The colt sighed as he walked, turning his head back to the other colt beside him. He watched him and eventually snorted, turning his head the other way. It was a hard to swallow what the bay colt was saying. His words peirced him, and Marius found it hard to accept them. He was implying that Marius's sister, who had once been full of life, no longer existed. She was gone from thin air, just like that. Would she be ever coming back? No. She was gone. And just like that, Marius saw the reality of life. There was no lie in the stallion's words, but the truth was hard as stone. Falling down on that truth was even harder, and Marius just wanted to turn around and run back to his mother. She would tell him stories, ones without unicorns, but ones with morals that were true. They said no one is really gone, yet they were foal's tales. He was still a foal, Marius decided, he still enjoyed his mother's company. There would be a time when he would have to walk away and grow up, live a life of his own. Arturo already seemed to believe in this grown up principles, which angered the colt. He huffed again, and turned his attention back to his acquaintance. "Oh yes! The unicorns! Like they're just going to make life after death lovely and perfect for my sister. The unicorns!" He whinned out loud into the air and twirled about, laughing. Marius didn't meet Arturo's eyes, but could guess his expression.
Marius looked about at the fields of green, and settled into a steady pace again. He wanted to believe that everything was lovely, beautiful, and perfect- just like the tales of unicorns. He wanted to know the Great Compromiser was watching over them. Though no matter how much he thought about it the male couldn't believe in such a thing. His father did, and his father was looked up on by many. His mother didn't, but she rarely shared her thoughts with the herd. The pretty mare had done well in her life without believing in such a thing. What made Marius so different? "Oh so now the unicorns guard my sister in the heavens above and choose the lovely Vasska's bride and wife! You've got to be kidding me Arturo!" Marius sighed, sensing an uneasy feeling. He calmed himself, and stopped laughing. His gaze was now serious as he looked back to his new found friend. "I don't know what faith is." he snapped. "My sister is dead, my parents are fighting, and now you are telling me unicorns are going to watch over me? do you have any idea how insane that is?!"

Which foal of Olde, raised in a healthy and sane family didn't enjoy the company of their parents? They gave you safety and advice, they gave you love and would make you feel needed, they showed you how to handle the life beyond their protective wings and prepared you for what was coming. Arturo would have loved to run back to his father and mother, feeling his mothers warmth and his fathers strength, listening to stories about the great knights of Olde and how their faith helped to safe their herd of all the malicious herds in the south. Even though he was almost a stallion, he never felt so alone and lost before, he couldn't handle it alone yet, it was too early, the wrong time and he was still a colt. He would have needed the guidance of his father and his advice, but now everything that was left for Arturo was sadness and range, it rooted deep inside him and just seemed to blossom right this moment.
He was startled by Marius' mocking and disbelieve, he wasn't a worthy member of the Olde herd if he was mocking the Unicorns, the reason of their existence. They weren't just children stories, they had been real, how could he not BELIEVE?? And then, he didn't even mock the Unicorns, but also his faith and his believes and his whole existence. Arturo's anger almost made him bite his tongue. He whirled around, facing Marius and reared up high. "HOW DARE YOU CALLING IT INSANE!! YOU ARE NO HORSE OF THE OLDE!!!" He screamed and went down on Marius, like a rabid dog. He snapped at his nape and ripped out hair and parts of his mane, his anger propelled him, bashing with his front legs, he hit Marius' right cheek and the skin split open by the force. Arturo stopped for a short moment, looking at Marius and his bleeding face but the blood made him even more angry. "The only thing that is left for me, are the unicorns. Don't you dare to devalue our herds faith again! You are a horse of the Olde herd! Thanks to the Great Compromiser, we are, what we are today! Don't you see what happens, if you turn your back on them? Aren't the Bachelors an awful example, for what happens if you anger the Unicorns? You should show some gratefulness!"
Arturo's sides heaved and he was ready for Marius counteraction, he WANTED to fight, he WANTED to be beaten and to deal out blows. He WANTED to be hurt and to hurt. He snorted one last time, baring his teeth. Come Marius...

Which horse in all of olde ever doubted their faith? Which horse in Olde never found peace with the unicorns, never prayed to them, never believed in them. Marius could tell you two horses. His mother and him. His mother's family probably had always been shunned in the family of Olde, while his father's side was prided in. Alexandria, the lovely champagne and tobiano colored mare, who had mothered young Marius and his sister, was known for her rebellious ways. She was resentful, and despite her temper, she always hid behind her husbands back. Her views were seen as absurd, and she had been told at a young age. Would Marius fall to the same path as his mother? She often told him her childhood stories, for she had a medium sized family. They lived on the outskirts of the Olde island, as he had been told. Eventually Alexandria found her way to the central city of Olde and met Marius's father. He had never thought to himself of the story before, but now it seemed to come back to him.
Whether it had been love at first site or true love at all, Marius didn't know. The two courted for awhile, both never telling the other of their beliefs. Eventually the time came for the two families to meet, and they had before. The story went as you can predict, the families met, weren't necessarily happy with each other, but allowed the two their blessing. Marius thought it was a nice story and a simple one. He had heard of the family feuds that had happened but never asked more questions so far. Now that the fighting had started between the Marius wondered if their was still something there, but he couldn't bear to see them go their separate ways. His family, despite the differences, was the only thing he had. Marius too wanted to find a family one day, sometime far off in the future. He wanted to know what it was like to love someone else, and not wish to spend a day without them.
Marius's thoughts of his family were quickly interrupted by his friend's scream. Marius abruptly stopped and pinned his ears back. Suddenly the colt bolted at him and snapped at his cheek. Stumbling back Marius felt blood run down his neck. His flanks heaved up and down as he panicked. "Don't hit me...one more time...I ... I. I'll get my father!" Marius felt so weak wishing for his fathers help, but what else could he do? His father was an adviser in the herd, and surely the colt had heard of him, maybe he would even be scared of him? But Marius had no clue where his father was at this moment, and he didn't have time to procrastinate. This colt obviously wanted to put up a fight, and Marius wasn't going to turn it down. His life depended on it.
"You should know better than to give thanks to unicorns. They're just childrens tales, foals talk!"
With that he launched himself forward. His mouth hung open, his hooves pushed forward. He aimed for the colts shoulder and closed his eyes. Oh sister, where ever you are. Give me strength. And then, he hit something solid and prayed once more for the best. Make him bleed. Make him pay.
