Ducklings Don't Fly 1. Kale (Jodifarrow22) 2. Felicity (Everlastingstables)
KALEA small, lanky, dark colored colt bountifully leapt through the long grass, his ears perked and his eyes bright. As usual, Kale he was venturing the foreign lands, keeping to himself as he did. Generally he was kept under the watchful eye of his parents or the other Exiles but for this short amount of time he was able to sneak away, something he'd definitely be scolded for later. But, he was young and he was not aware of any dangers on this Island so to him this was a harmless endeavor.
Soon he found himself on the edge of a thick, leafy forest, the gnarled tree trunks adorned with lush green foliage. The dirt beneath the trees was soft and upon it grew wispy blades of grass that tickled Kale's thin legs, he giggled to himself as he pushed forward, leaving small hoof prints behind.
The edge of the forest was very thick and he found himself getting stuck between roots every two seconds, but once he had trudged through the entangled surface, the forest opened up a bit more. Kale didn't usually care about where he was standing, but he had to take a moment to be amazed by his surroundings. He made his way over to a thick, roughly textured tree trunk and tilted his head so the bottom of his cheeks were resting upon the bark. The tree seemed to stretch on forever and being so close to it made Kale feel incredibly small. After a few minutes of marveling at the tree, he backed away from it and begun digging through various bushes, seeking out any treasures he could take back to show his parents.

Within a fair distance; hidden behind a wall of forest; veiling the sight-line from one side of the meadow of long grass from the other. Lay a small congregation of horses. Amongst them was a very young foal by the name of Felicity. Her mane and tail was the color of the warm sunshine which contrasted against her bay coat. The appaloosa on her rear shimmered in brilliantly against the sun's light.
Felicity too a moment to get a bit of food from her mother, but then soon after. She began to look around and start to wander. Her hooves stabbed into the ground lightly with each step. Making sure she'd not fall with her long, stubby legs. With all this tall grass around, this was a good opportunity, or shall we say dangerous opportunity for the young foal to sneak off. Sure, she loved her mom so very much, but there was still curiosity in the foal, and an eagerness to check things out on her own. Within her small little mind, grew the interest in seeing something very special. Something that only seemed like fairy tale. Out of everything in the world, Felicity wanted to see a unicorn.
With mother distracted, Felicity edged closer to the veiling forest. “Surely a unicorn might be hiding in there!” she said to herself as her gaze widened the closer she got. The smell of the various scents of the forest already wafting through her nostrils. None of which she understood, but hey! That was the exciting part. Discovering each and every one of them!
As hooves touched the strange ground. Felicity felt a little exposed to the surroundings. In the tall grass it was different, but now she was out in the open that little feeling in her stomach that came only when in danger or felt fearful. Maybe...maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Felicity backed herself up some until she was back amongst the safety of the tall grass and waited. Perhaps when nothing bad happened as she looked within the forest then that feeling would go away.
Moments passed, and the little foal still didn't move. What was holding her back now? Nothing bad had happened, so let's get this show on the road! Suddenly her brow furrowed and she pouted her lips. “Be brave Felicity,” she chanted out loud then finally stepped out of the grass and entered the edge of the forest once again. The trees all around her looked like giant legs from the forest floor as she gazed upward. Wooooh....
Now her legs were REALLY wobbling as she walked. The filly had never stepped foot in the forest before. This was all her first time. Anything and everything could be a potential hazard or life taker. Yet, the longer she remained the more she got accustomed to it. Huh...this ain't so bad!
Felicity ventured further and further, lengthening the distance from her mother and the group. It was like she was a lone horse living life on her own. Like an adult, an adult looking for a unicorn! What a large leap from being a foal clinging to her momma! Not that there was anything wrong with being clingy to mom. Cause mommy is awesome and Felicity couldn't see living without her.
Still, her focus was on the forest and everything within it right now. There was a lot to cover and not much time. To hurry her search, she decided to do something very stupid, “HELLOOOO!!?” the filly called out then listened for a reply. Her voice echoing slightly through the trees. Surely someone could have heard her....or....something.

Letting the cool breeze weave through Kale's small tendrils of mane and tail, he trotted happily through the empty woods, whistling as he went along. Nothing seemed to bother this colt, well,, except for maybe his insomnia, but even then he wasn't usually effected by it, and went about his life as if there was nothing pulling him back. He did sometimes feel a bit lonely, his only proper friend in his herd was busy at the moment so he was left to his own devices when it came to entertainment. He didn't mind though, he would find something fun to do eventually.
After digging around for a while, he found a small piece of what looked like metal. It was rusted and sharp on the edges. Kale wagged his tail like a puppy finding a bone, his eyes wide and his smile wider. He attempted to pick it up, but dropped it soon after it managed to cut his lip. A small amount of blood oozed from the tiny cut and Kale shuddered as the metallic tasting liquid entered his mouth. He had bled before- much worse than this. He had been burnt, just under his cheeks, on his neck lay a large scar. That memory had always remained with him, making him petrified of fire. He remembered the time when it was healing and he was unable to even move his head, for the pain was too much to bare. He was much younger and very weak. His parents didn't think he'd survive.
Shaking his head and returning to reality, Kale wiped his muzzle on the soft grass beneath his feet, gently enough so it didn't hurt but hard enough so the fresh blood left his skin and painted the blades of grass. Once the pain had stopped for the most part, he turned to the piece of metal and tried to pick it up again. Well, the same thing happened, he cut his lip again in the exact same spot as before. He washed it again, now kicking the piece of trash far into the foliage so he wasn't tempted to pick it up again. He crossed his eyes, trying to look at his bleeding lip, for a while he just sat there attempting to look where his eyes couldn't possibly look, until a sudden voice filled the empty air, making Kale jump and hide behind a tree. He peered out from behind the trunk, a cautious look upon his face as he sniffed the air for any unfamiliar scents. Yes. There was one, another horse. At least it wasn't a predator- he didn't think.
He made his way out of hiding, looking around to see if he could find the source of the voice. Right now would have been a good time to not be in the middle of the woods alone. He didn't really hear the voice properly, it was hard to figure out amongst the echoes it brought, but he knew for sure that it was female. He slowly and hesitantly made his way toward where he heard the voice come from, keeping alert. Once he found the horse responsible, he relaxed slightly, finding that it was a filly- and she was alone. He stepped toward her, coming out of hiding. He was a very friendly colt and usually very confident, but this was a.. a... girl.
