Will we ever be together?
1. Kanu (Jodifarrow22)
2. Cholena (Wistfully-Dreaming)
Plot-
Exile Captain, Kanu and Bachelor Brood, Cholena mistakenly run into each other while both are located on the Eastern Island. Both have a dense history filled with romance and warm memories, but this sudden meeting is shocking and all the two can do is try and wrap their heads around seeing each other again.
LENA
The atmosphere amongst the eastern herd was tense; the overwhelming amount of stallions coming and going within the herd was enough to unsettle the mares. Luckily for them, the stallions hadn't paid much mind to the broods over the past few days, and oddly, they were able to enjoy the others company. The breeze slowly drifted over the grasses, the sounds whistling in the air, the chilly night sky slowly cascading over the sky as the sun sunk into the ocean.
A small mare sighed heavily, her redundant day ending the same as it had for the past few years. Her head rose, blue eyes staring longingly at the clouds, the birds who flew among their heights, winds entangling themselves in her mane. Tired lids fell over blue eyes, her breast expanding as her lungs inhaled the chilly night air as it came off the ocean; the taste a mixture of salt and musk of the island. Another sigh escaped her muzzle, a shake ruffling her mane as she flickered her eats towards the looming shadows of the foliage that encased their small valley.
As of late, the guards were slacking, and with the growing number of stallions, the mares were tentatively left to themselves, unless a stallion had a "need" for one of them, but that was rare now as they all fought to keep other stallions below them in rank in place. It was to be expected, since Klaus left, and the new "leader" Cain took place, the herd was in turmoil. She had just returned from the scouting crew to meet up with the Exiles, and the events for the Eastern island caused too much trouble for the mare's liking.
It was times like this, however, that the mares had some peace, and they drank in every second of it greedily. Dusk was especially quiet that night, the air hanging heavily on the back of the mare as she mindlessly wandered to the edge of the meadow. The other mares slept peacefully, heads hung low as their eyes slowly shut with their tired soul rested for once. The sight made the mare sad, especially on the newest mare named Seeker from the Exiles, her eyes full of pity for their poor state, and she sighed, hooves crumpling grass under her weight. The foliage of the forest surrounded her body, and it wasn't until she found herself lost in the thickets and her thoughts did she notice she wandered off.
"Oh no..." She whispered under her breath, panic welling in her chest as her head whipped around, "Brutus will have my head if he found out; or even worse, that dreaded Cain will."
The chimera mare paced warily, short breaths escaping her lungs through her nose is foggy clouds as the air chilled with the moon rising, clouds lazily looming by.
"Hopefully I can find my way back before anyone notices I'm gone..." She thought out loud, ears swiveling to hear for the herd. The dusk wasn't too dark, and the mare peered thought the brush to find her own hoof prints. Thankfully, they were easy enough to spot, but not before trouble found her as if she was a beacon for it. Her throat felt dry as she felt another presence near to her, but she pushed on, finding every excuse not to look around warily. A loud, agitated huff caught her ears and sent a chill down her dark spine. Her tail flicked worriedly as she acknowledged the large figure behind her, no doubt a guard.
The pony mare flinched slightly as she heard him speak to himself, all stallions seemed on edge lately with the war, in fear of broods being stolen. She shied away, pushing herself further and further from the herd she'd ever been since before she was caught. She could run right now; she could leave. But what of Melia.? What of the others.? She couldn't do that to them. However, she needed to escape this brute's prying, searching eyes, and with that, the pony dashed into the dark brush to hide herself away.
KANU
Kanu furrowed his eyebrows, pacing back and forth as he usually did when deep in thought. He was stressing, as he usually did when situations like this arose- which was kind of never. He was lost. How did this happen? He couldn't grasp the concept of being without direction right now. Everywhere looked the same, every direction was the same thing: Green foliage. He was simply puzzled. Why was it so hard for him to tell North from West? He was usually fairly good at navigating, using the sky and the tracks in the ground, but right now the ground looked a thousand meters below his feet and the sky was barely visible through the thick layer of tree foliage that veiled him.
'God damn it!' He thought harshly to himself, pawing the ground with frustration as he pondered on whether he should stay in one spot or try and find his way back to where the Exiles and Bachelors had decided to co-exist. He desperately sniffed the grass around him, trying to find signs or a horse that had recently passed by. Nothing. There was fecal matter but that was from a different species of animal, luckily it didn't smell like that of a grass beast's. The dark stallion snorted as a flock of birds darted through the trees around him, causing his head to snap up in alarm. Once they were gone he returned his attention to the task ahead: Getting back as soon as possible.
A few minutes passed and Kanu seemed to be getting somewhere. Yes, he had indeed seen this scenery before, but it still wasn't giving him a bright spark of realization as to which route he needed to take which made him very short tempered. At every snap of a stick or chirp of a bird Kanu would grit his teeth, wanting to yell 'shut up' into the void. But he bit his tongue as to not attract unwanted attention. The wind slowly picked up, weaving through the thick, gnarled tree trunks and hitting him unpleasantly. He grumbled, he had never managed to get lost before, even on lands he didn't know very well. Sometimes if natural obstacles got in the way he'd be delayed, but he'd always know where he was. So why not now?
Storming in whatever direction he had finally chosen to go in, he mumbled to himself under his breath. 'You're an idiot, you should have been watching where you were going.' Kanu scolded, his head titled downward as to shield his eyes from insects and the on-coming wind. Suddenly he picked up a scent. What was it? Something odd yet familiar in a way. He stood for a moment, processing the smell as he inhaled it deeply. Could it be? No. I couldn't be. But it could have been.
Kanu instantly headed toward the source of the sweet smell he was sniffing. Soon enough he had come face to face with a mare, short and stocky was she, her coat painted with a light bay color. It was her, the bright blue eyes and long lashes gave her identity away instantly. He hadn't seen her ever since he washed up on the shores of the Eastern Isles, and he had forgotten until now that she resided here.
"Cholena."
LENA
The pony mare wandered deeper and deeper into the thrush, losing herself in the thick foliage of the east island. The trees shielded her sight from any moonlight, causing her blue eyes to strain in the absence of their sense. She continued on, hooves at a determined, yet anxious, trot as she plodded along the small, beaten path that may have once been widely used, but now forgotten. She frowned; was she too like this path she followed.? Old and forgotten, fading every so slowly from every loved one's memories until she was nothing but a mere presence whisking away in their minds.? The direly important pondering mind of the mare was brought back to attention as she entered a small clearing in the thickest part of the woods.
It was beautiful; pale, soft blue light shown through the opening of the trees' limbs. The few blades of tall grass billowed in the wind, gentle rustling combined with the whipping of the leaves. The black, curling tendrils of her braid were twirled in the caressing breezes, but she didn't notice. Her name was spoken; every letter, every vowel, every syllable was gingerly whispered as her eyes locked on to the stallion in front of her. Her heart raced, ears flitting and flickering to hear his heavy breathing.
He was there.
He looked so different than the young colt she met years ago on the Southern Isles. He was just as handsome, if not more so with age. She remembered his kind eyes and gentle heart; and his advice to stay on the island with his herd. Oh how she wished she had heeded his warning. Another small breeze drifted his scent to him; she breathed him in deeply, smelling of the faintest scent of soot, but his natural aroma overtook her senses more than anything. Warm, familiar, and spicy, just like pine in winter when it tickled your nose.
"Kanu."
She breathed softly, her hooves hesitantly carrying herself to his dark form, white face staring at her intently. She paused, worried that if she moved too fast he'd flee away from her. When she was sure he was staying put, the young mare bolted to close the space between them. He was the only familiarity she knew anymore, and she wailed softly in delight and sadness at the same time, her petite, stocky frame curling under his jaw, her cheek brushing against the side of his neck. She huffed heavily, nostrils flaring to take in his scent, his warmth, just him before he vanished away forever, his mane draping over her face as she closed glossy, blue eyes.
"Are you real.?"
KANU
Kanu intensely bore his gaze into Lena's, his mind simply a pile of mush sitting at the bottom of his skull. What was he to do? This mare had been his whole life at one point and then whisked away from him the next. It had been so shortly lived, but to him he had known this small mare for a lifetime. He didn't breath, didn't dare speak a word and he didn't blink, his eyes glued to Lena as she did the same. What was he to do other than act as a statue would? The air was tense and he couldn't predict what was to happen next. Would Lena run? Would HE run? His heart was slowing as his breathing ceased and just as his vision grew blurry, Lena's skin touched his and it brought him back to reality.
He gasped for breath as they collided.
He was numb. What should he do? Should he push her off?
No. He slowly curled his head around her neck and hooked her toward his chest, his heart pounding against her pelt.
He took a deep, shaky breath as he tried to fathom the warmth that grew inside him as he felt her exhale against his skin. What was this? A tear? Yes, a tear had escaped Kanu's shut eyes and begun to trail down his cheek. Why was he so emotional about her? He hadn't seen her in years and after he had gotten over her leaving him, he didn't think about her. Not until now. All the shut off feelings and thoughts about Lena broke through the barrier in his mind and flooded his senses. He nibbled at the base of her mane gently, affectionately.
"Yes. I'm real. I'm here."
LENA
A single point on the mare's neck burned in a warm sensation, the feeling following the curves and dips of her throat to escape towards the ground. A tear. But not from her, no; this tear was she'd from the stallion that had his own body curled delicately, protectively over hers. She felt her chest tighten as her heart swelled, her own hot, crocodile tears tracing the features of her split face. She couldn't think, she didn't want to as she enjoyed his comforting presence guarding over her. For the first time in almost five years, she felt safe; even though she as protected by the "strongest" stallions in all of Chevalin day to day, only with this stallion did she feel that sensation.
She choked out a small, awkward laugh, the sound more of a chortle than anything else. Reluctantly she pulled away from him, her glowing blue eyes meeting his equally dazzling gaze. The mare felt her heart stutter like a filly feeling love for the first time, and her coat grew hot. Shyly, she averted her eyes to the ground, her hooves becoming the most interesting focal point in the islands. The chimera sheepishly peeked a glance at his face, eyes tracing the way the white on his coat kissed the dark dappling brown. She studied his muscles, how his chest expanded with every slow, deliberate breath, how his withers ever so slightly twitched in anxiousness, or perhaps it was how the wind caught is stark black mane, blowing it into his face as if he was perfectly still and the world moved around him, and him alone.
She instantly felt self conscious, hiding behind her thick, black curls. She wasn't the same mare he met years ago; she was scarred, battered, beaten. Lena liked to think she kept her character with strict integrity, but no mare who was in her state could say so honestly. It made her quivering lips turn into a frown. It was unfortunate, it was all unfortunate. Her jaw tightened as she thought of his opinions on her scars; the dark mars imperfections on her face, her belly, her coat that was like no other in the islands.
"If I had known I'd be meeting you, I would've looked more presentable," she said softly, trying to lighten the mood with some humor; she wasn't know for her jokes, but she tried to ease her own worries.
KANU
After what seemed like an eternity embracing her, Lena pulled away. As soon as she did a dark, cold air clung to Kanu making him wince. He longed for her against him again, it was not a want. It was a need. As she tilted her head toward the ground he examined her. Every curve and ever scar, so beautifully placed upon her speckled coat. She looked different, but not bad different. She was still flawless in the glim light that peeked through the branches above them. Still as young as she was when they last met. He sighed, just longing to touch her again, to inhale her scent.
But he didn't. He refrained.
Instead he stood a few feet from her, his head titled downward just as hers was and he examined each blade of grass below his feathered hooves. Oh look, a bug. Let's just think about this bug for a while. That might make my stupid emotions cease so I can at least control myself. Great, the bug flew away. Now what?. Kanu looked up again, his icy blue eyes gazing at Lena from underneath arched eyebrows. She looked self-conscious, which was not necessary at all. He didn't look the part either, his coat fuzzy from the dense Eastern Isles air, his mane frizzy and the large scar in the shape of an 'x' upon his forehead. He dug a hoof in the soft soil, feeling weak and vulnerable.
As Lena put herself down in a way, Kanu couldn't help but gasp. Great, he was acting like a fairy tale prince, which he didn't like. But at the same time, couldn't help. That's just what Lena did to him.
"You're so beautiful it hurts." He said, almost bluntly as if she should know that already.
LENA
Her ears perked as he spoke again, her eyes hidden by her thick lashes as she let out a bashful laugh. Lena didn't feel like she looked like much any longer, but when she was back with his warmth and care, she felt like she was more than she ever was. More than just a trophy like she was to these bachelor stallions, and more than just a loner when she met him. She felt special, like this dark stallion would treat her how she always thought she deserved to be treated when she dreamed of love as a filly.
"Th-thank you," she whinnied softly, blue eyes gazing towards the ground as she avoided his own stare timidly. The butterflies in her belly fluttered wildly as she finally returned to look at him with more confidence than when she first laid eyes on his dark coat. Her face cocked to the side slightly, ears twitching inquisitively as her calm face twisted into one of confusion.
"Kanu," she breathed out softly, deliberating her words, "why're you still on the east island.? They're taking your mares, they'll take them one by one, Kanu. They've even taken Olde mares, for unicorn's sake.!"
The chimera stared at the commander of the exiles, eyes wide with worry as she searched his face for answers, "They won't leave you alone; they'll start with your mares, and then your foals, they'll take everyone. That's how this island works, you can't ever leave."
The pony mare sighed defeatedly, ears pinned to her skull as she frowned; she's tried for years to find ways to leave and escape, the evade the tyranny of the bachelor herd, but to no avail. And even when she had the chance, like now, she was too afraid to leave in fear that they'd find her; and finding her meant punishment, but even death would be welcome to mares in her position.
KANU
The dark stallion took a step back from Lena as she raised her voice, surprised by her sudden change of tone. His mouth was slightly open as he took in what she had said. He knew this already, he knew they wouldn't stop taking until there was nothing left. They would try anyway. Kanu wouldn't let them get away with that. They had taken enough and as soon as the Exiles were ready or able to leave the Eastern island, they would do so with integrity and everything they arrived with. Kanu wouldn't stand for the Bachelors to take more than they deserved. Taking food, water; yes. Lives; no.
For all of Kanu's years he had been warned about the Bachelors, educated if you will in the ways of their tyranny and empire. He had learnt a lot, and since he was a foal he didn't bet that much had changed about the Bachelor herd either. They all seemed to be the same as they were when his father told stories of them.
With a sigh, Kanu frowned gently,
"Lena, I won't let them get away with anything, if I am to let them ruin the Exiles then I am to no longer belong on this Earth. My duty is to protect them and god damn I will do that until the minute I stop breathing!" His tone slowly escalated until it was at a slight yell, but he immediately brought it down as he sighed, drooping his head from Lena's captivating gaze. "I do not like to see you this way. I do not like to see you being used and abused by these horses. I do not like to see you without your love for life and your love for freedom. I long to see you how you were when we last met, free and spirited. I fear that if you stay here that beauty will never return. Although I still see it in your tired eyes." His words were barely audible and he took a step toward the striped mare in order to feel her warmth again. Although he did not touch her, he simply gazed at her with longing eyes, vulnerable eyes. He was everything but emotionally strong when around this mare.
He needed her to come with him. To come with him back to the Southern Isles when they departed. He didn't want to leave her again, not now. Not after suddenly being faced with her again. He wanted to know he could keep her safe, keep her warm and keep her where she wanted to be. He cringed every time he thought of one of the Bachelor stallions forcing her into submissive surrender. She didn't deserve to be treated this way, without any say and without her own rights. This mare was one of the only mares he had ever emotionally latched on to, she was the one who introduced him to deeper meanings in life. Their interactions were all very deep and it effected him in the strangest ways.
"Lena you must come home with me."
