# Ginger-Goddess & Ghost #
Another day was coming to an end. The sun, who finished its daily trip across the sky earlier each day now, had just disappeared from view. Last rays lingered in the horizon, coloring the very edge of the sky in purples and deep reds. Already the moon had come out hiding, bringing with it the thousands of stars. It was a warm, windless night, and as Ouray watched the sky darken, his herd settled down for sleep only a few dozen feet away. Not everyone, of course - there always were vigilant eyes - but on a night like this, having to stay awake was hardly a chore.
He wasn't on watch duty himself, but Ouray found his spirit too restless for sleep. He could do that later, alone on some small travel or another. His position as a scavenger afforded him that freedom, scouting and exploring away from the herd. Even if most times, nothing of interest or worth mentioning was found.
Ouray stretched, and lowered his head to search the surrounding for something interesting to look at or to do. As nothing immediately presented itself as the entertainment of the night, the stallion huffed and returned his gaze to the skies. It was truly beautiful. If they made broods in the colors of the sky, maybe he too could find himself liking one.
The thought made him smile.

The cool crisp air was a welcome change for the old stallion. The day had been long and almost unbearably hot at times, at least for Ghost. His coat always grew in thick and heavy, causing even pleasant days to seem far too warm for his liking. He plodded along the edges of the Bachelor's territory, checking in on those who were on watch, and making sure no one was dozing off. Just last week one of the younger stallions was caught sleeping on duty, and he'd almost let one of the broods escape. The Elite wasn't about to let that happen again, even if it meant going out of his way to make sure everyone was doing their job correctly. Many of the other stallions thought he was a bit crazy for staying up most nights when he didn't have to, but the truth of the matter was, the older stallion rarely slept. Too many memories and nightmares plagued him in his sleep, so he avoided it as often as possible. He'd nap during the day, or sleep for an hour here and there, ensuring he got some semblance of rest, but that was about all he could handle.
Looking down at the summer fields from the hill he stood on, Ghost noticed one of the off duty stallions was still awake, staring up at the star filled sky. Walking closer, he noted it was one of the Scavengers. "Ouray, what are you still awake for?" The appaloosa asked quietly as he silently approached the other stallion. Though he'd never spoken to the younger scavenger at length, He'd been impressed by the stallions drive and enthusiasm for most of the missions he was sent on. Now though, Ghost was curious.//

Ouray turned his head sharply at the sound of approaching steps. The other stallion had gotten very close before he even noticed them coming, which was unnerving to him - he was a scavenger, noticing things was what would keep him alive in the future. Not all raids were nice little party events where the targets ran away in terror at the first sight of Bachelors. This, however, should not be a need for worry, at least he hoped not. Ouray was fairly confident that he'd know had he pissed off an elite of his own herd. The big white and grey elite seemed more naturally curious than reprimanding, which put him at ease. Even if complete relaxation was out of question, he'd probably fare a lot better if he didn't run a whole bunch of "what-ifs" through his head.
"Elite Ghost", Ouray acknowledged the large grey, nodding his head, and then went on to tell: "Nothing really. Just feeling a bit restless I guess." Ouray looked at the other stallion in silence. He wanted to ask what Ghost was doing up - he doubted the elite was on guard duty, after all, and seeing as Ouray's night owl habits were worth noting, same could be said for the older stallion. But that was none of his business, really.
"Do you have a task for me?", he asked instead, ears pointing expectantly towards the larger stallion. Surely that was why he had come over - elites were the leaders chosen after all, even if Ouray wasn't exactly sure about what the job included, he was pretty sure they were busy. A small smirk found its on his face for a moment as he asked: "Or just looking for company to enjoy this night with?"

"Elite Ghost." The older stallion chuckled under his breath as Ouray included his title to his name. Though it was nice to see some of the herd still had some respect, this obvious show of it was unexpected, and it struck the grey stallion as somewhat funny. Attempting to maintain a professional demeanor, Ghost bit the inside of his cheek, listening as the dark chestnut continued. "Nothing really. Just feeling a bit restless I guess." The elite nodded understandingly. With war waiting on the horizon, it was hard not to feel some sort of restless unease. "I know the feeling all too well..." The spotted stallion responded, his voice trailing off a bit as he spoke.
"Do you have a task for me? Or just looking for company to enjoy this night with?"A task? Ghost thought, trying to sense the younger stallion's motives. Why was Ouray so quick to want a task? The appaloosa snorted softly, chalking it up to the other wanting to get in good with some of the more influential members of the herd. "I'm currently just making sure the on duty guards are doing their jobs, Though if you'd like to join me and you'd be interested, I may have a proposal for you."
((OOC: Sorry it took so long for me to reply, my internet has been extremely unreliable, and RL has been kinda in my face. I should be back for good now though!))

Oh, watching after the guards then. Not very glamorous for an elite, he had to admit, but someone had to do it, he supposed. Ouray knew well that occasionally the guards liked to sneak off to do their own stuff, maybe explore a bit or harass a brood or something. They were quite safe on their island, save some stupidly bold loners, but being careful wasn't really a bad thing either. You never knew what schemes other herds had on their minds.
He was slightly disappointed that Ghost had merely been curious, and not coming to him with something to put his mind into. The disappointed showed on his face for a short moment, before disappearing behind a well schooled, neutral expression, even if the elite's new suggestion had sparked his interest. Couldn't appear too eager after all, it wouldn't be very smart. "I don't see why not", Ouray said with a slight smile, stepping closer to the elite and clearly waiting for them to lead the way. Already he let his eyes somewhat lazily scan the surrounding herd, looking for anything out of the ordinary. So far, it seemed like a quiet night.

Ghost snorted softly in acknowledgement of Ouray's agreement. Good, He could use the help. Starting out along the beaten path once more, the silver stallion glanced back to see if Ouray was actually following, or if the younger scavenger had only feigned interest in his offer, as so many before had done. There weren't many stallions in the herd who were willing to put in some extra without needing to be told to do it. Thankfully though, Ouray seemed willing enough. "Once we finish checking on the guards, I need some help with an intruder." He paused briefly, contemplating how to continue. "There have been rumors of a rogue loner offering to help broods "escape" from the herd. Though there haven't been any incidents yet, I'd like to make sure that none arise. We don't need any more chaos amongst our ranks." The shire huffed loudly, stomping his hoof for emphasis. "I was planning on taking care of this issue myself, but since you're awake, I could use the extra set of eyes." Ghost watched the stallion, trying to gauge his body language to get some insight. Perhaps...Perhaps Ouray can be trusted with more...but then again, maybe I shouldn't trust him at all... The stallion shook his mane as he continued plodding along. This mission of sorts could provide the insight Ghost wanted. If all goes well enough tonight, maybe Ouray can be recruited....

Ghost quickly turned words into action, and Ouray was swift to follow. The dirt of the little path Bachelors had formed with their repeat visits felt nice and solid beneath his hooves, a strong contrast to the softness of the grass. He didn't ask were exactly they were headed, but Ouray felt it was rather safe to assume their target was the closest guard to their current location. If the guards stood where they were supposed to, they'd end up circling the rest of the herd, thus giving Ouray a nice view of their late night activities as a bonus. Soon Ghost spoke, commanding his attention. What he heard was worrisome - Ouray had little love for the broods, but the broods were theirs. They belonged with the Bachelors, and no Loner had a right to try and snag them away with false promises. How would one Loner protect and shelter a bunch of Bachelor broods anyway? It wasn't like he could be there to keep them from being taken back.
"Sounds like an stupid Loner if you ask me", he pointed out as loud as well, soon adding: "I mean I guess he could succeed if the watch wasn't being sharp, but I doubt he could offer the broods anything after their initial escape." False promises, he decided. Ouray knew well that some Bachelor broods dreamed of freedom, but many of them were born into the herd, or raised there from young age - others had colts they had to tend to. How many of them could actually survive without the herd? Not many, he reckoned. "But then, stupidity is the worst kind of bravery and Loners are a sneaky bunch. I'll gladly help", Ouray promised enthusiastically.

"Sounds like an stupid Loner if you ask me." "Stupid? Maybe... But this is far from a new issue. We've dealt with similar situations over the years and have lost many broods, and even a few colts to a stray loner or two..." Ghost trailed off slightly as images of his mother flashed through his mind. "I mean I guess he could succeed if the watch wasn't being sharp, but I doubt he could offer the broods anything after their initial escape. But then, stupidity is the worst kind of bravery and Loners are a sneaky bunch. I'll gladly help", Ouray's voice cut into Ghost's thoughts, bringing him back to the present. "Why did you think I'm checking up on the guards?" The older stallion chuckled a bit as he walked. "Need to make sure they are paying attention and not goofing off...as some of them are prone to do. Besides, as you said, Loners are a tricky bunch. I've even heard of some of them escorting broods to the Olde herd." Ghost snorted as he spoke. Just the thought of losing some of their broods to the Olde her was upsetting. He went back to focusing on his current task, heading to the last guard's post. Glancing back at Ouray, he spoke once more. "With all the chaos within the herd right now, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the mares did attempt escape. With all the uncertainty surrounding our new "leader" and with war looming just over the horizon...We wouldn't be able to take the time to chase after a brood gone rogue...And at a time like this, we can't afford the loss."

Yes, he could see how losing broods during such a time would be a bad thing for them. Getting new broods to replace ones lost was not an easy task - mares didn't mature any quicker than stallions did, and while there was always a chance of catching a loner mare and adding them to the fold, those mares were usefully wild and difficult to control. "I don't see why the loners need to meddle in our affairs anyway. Our broods are none of their business", he said somewhat venomously. Yes, many broods were originally loners. But loners weren't exactly a herd, and Ouray did not see the value of risking oneself to help a stranger, just because they had originally been part of the same, very loose group of horses. Not that broods were worth helping in his opinion to begin with, but some stallions had different ideas on that, which he could respect but not quite understand.
"Which would probably make the loners even braver, when the word got out that they got away with it so easily", Ouray sighted, seeing very clearly how it could quickly spiral from control and become a rather nasty thorn in their sides. He looked past Ghost for a moment, making out a near stationary figure of a guard not far ahead.

"I don't believe it's the loner's as a whole. Just a rogue who most likely has ties to one of our broods." He stopped for a moment. "The loner's don't generally meddle in the affairs of any of the herds. I think it goes against some code of theirs or something. I know a few loner's, some of which I'd consider allies. My guess is, The rogue sees it as his affair due to that connection, be it a past love, a child, or a friend..." He sighed quietly, remembering the day his father came to "rescue" his mother...leaving him no better than an orphan to be raised by the slaves who had foals of their own to care for. "They have their reasons....but that's what makes this a real threat. There is most likely a very real goal in mind..." He trailed off, snorting as he looked towards the lone guard. "Wait here, I'll be back." He said gruffly, pinning his ears back as he marched toward the solitary figure without so much as a glance back at Ouray.
"Wake up!" Ghost bellowed, his commanding voice carrying farther than he had intended. He stood with his face only inches from the previously sleeping guards. Without waiting for a response from the startled horse, he continued. "You have a job to do soldier, I suggest you do it well! Do not let me catch you sleeping on the job again or I will make sure you are one of the night guards for the next week! Do you understand me?" He snorted loudly as he continued back to where Ouray stood. "That is why I do what I do." He said chuckling softly, a smirk slowly finding it's way onto his face. "Anyway, I suggest you keep your eyes and ears on alert as we continue. With all this laziness afoot, who knows what may have slipped through our ranks....Then again, there could be nothing."
