Unicorns and Grassbeasts A Roleplay between Pony-Bones' Obscura, Pony-Bones' Cain, and Katha88's Arturo *Note: This takes place about 18 years prior to the current storyline Obscura It was a rather rare occurrence that Obscura got brought to the Olde city, and even rarer when she made friends her own age. Her parents, fanatically religious as they were, kept Obscura far away from the city in their own little sect, worshipping the Unicorns and the idea that Vasska, the next leader, was one of them, born to this age. And yet, here she was in the city, her parents off doing other important things, while she was left to wander. Part of her young mind wondered if they were petitioning Valentine again to let her, Obscura, be Vasska’s betrothed, though she knew from her abstract glimpses of the future that it was not meant to be. His soul belonged to another, even if it wasn’t in love. What was there to do now, but pray?
The filly, only just having turned 9, walked carefully through the crumbling human streets of the city, watching her dark hooves take step by step. Her sight was already starting to go cloudy, and the reflective surfaces that remained seemed to beam the sunlight right into her eyes, causing her pain. With a little sigh, she shook her mane in front of her eyes to protect them, and went along her way, though occasionally she would physically bounce off walls, or even other herd members. Mumbled apologies fell from her lips initially, but they faded to silence as she got further and further lost in thought. She wanted to find the Praying Pool, but the city was so big, and she hadn’t been here before, at least in her memory. Obscura’s ears flicked to and fro with the sounds of other foals playing in the streets, but she was on a mission, their cries of joy only background noise to her now.
Arturo Looking around, Arturo found himself lost. His father had been summoned to deal other tasks, so the young colt of 12 years was left on his own to find the praying pools in the Olde city. He wasn’t certain where he should go and he was way too shy, to ask the other younglings around. Shyly, he looked around, trying to figure out where they had come from last time. He felt quite uncomfortable in the Olde city, as he wasn’t used to explore things with his friends. He had no real friends, his father kept him very close and most of the time he was being entertained by him, either with training or studying.
Arturo looked up the huge buildings, that were witnesses of the once glorious time of the human age. Long gone, the human monuments were crumbling, grown over by grass, weeds and bushes. Many trees started to grow out from every suitable corner and whole flower beds grew, where once parking lots and shops had been. Of course Arturo had no idea of the long gone reign of the human race, he had no idea how they might have lived. The only thing he knew and what counted was the Great Compromiser. He gave the equine world peace and guidance. So Arturo sighed, he stared at the ground, a mixture of cobble stone ground, gravel, dirt and leaves from past Autumns. He pawed the ground with his little hooves and stuck his muzzle into the dirt and leaves and searched through it, sometimes nuts or tasty roots lay under the top ground. As he searched the ground with his upper lip, being busy with the loudly rustling of the dry leaves, he must have overheard the seal brown filly that was getting closer to him, with her forelock covering her eyes.
Obscura At this age, she was a solid little filly, muscled and toned. Though she did not train her body, it was at least kept fed, for her parents had such high hopes for her. They couldn't let her waste away into nothing, as she was prone to doing if left to her own devices. Food was plentiful, even, and yet without direct supervision, her parents feared that eventually she would fade away to skin and bones, and perish of her own troubled mind. "You were given this power directly from the Unicorns" her parents would tell her, though she knew that what she did was no true Gift. It was unreliable and hazy, and completely...well...obscure. The sect that she spent most of her time in helped her puzzle together the meaning of her dreams, more often than not, and promised that eventually she would be able to do it on her own. Though it was exactly that, a puzzle with so many pieces, and if you put it together wrong, the picture didn't look right. The future, however, did not tell one how it was meant to look. It was the interpreter's prerogative and until she met with the witch Ba'Yagu to know her true powers, it would remain that way.
Lost in her own thoughts, swirling around whether finding Ba'Yagu would insult the Unicorns by telling them their blessing upon her was imperfect, she found herself completely entangled with a colt that did not too too much different than she, dappled and dark maned. Their gangly foal limbs were completely wound around one another, and thus instead of being able to just walk it off and whisper her apologies as usual, it took time to realize which was her leg, and which was his. Her pale eyes opened a bit wider to try to see who she had connected with, but she did not recognize the colt. Seemingly older than she was, but perhaps..."Do you know the way to the Praying Pool? I want to talk to the Unicorns." She said, even while still entangled with the colt, as if this was a normal position from which to hold a conversation.

Arturo
With a grunt, Arturo's face hit the ground, his legs flying like old sticks on the ground and the nut he was nibbling on threw in his pharynx, almost choking him. With a cough, he got rid of the nut, but not of the dark colored filly that was entangled with him. Arturo gaped at the filly in shock and tried to pull out one of his black and long hind legs out form under the other foal, being super nervous about the sudden encounter with the seal bay filly. When she eyed at him and started to talk, Arturo stopped his struggle suddenly and raised his brows, pressing his lips together so he formed them into a duck like feature. It was so rare, that he would speak to others yet alone to youngsters as him, that he felt, like he must have lost his voice and the ability to talk. He stared at the filly with the curly and thick hair and pale blue eyes and slowly started to loose his lips and to open his jaw, allowing his throat to create a sound. "Uuu-U-Unicorns. Yes. But...... I don't know." Puzzled, he stared at the filly with dead, out spaced eyes, when suddenly. "You know, I was looking for the praying pool myself! I have been there, but I can't find the right way. My dad knows how to get there!." He looked at her, like a dog that just had brought back a stick but soon his face melted into disappointment. "But he's not here and so, I can't find the way. We could help each other to find the way to the praying pools? I have to pray for my mommy and our leader."
With a shy and wary look, he urged his face into a grotesque grin with questioning eyes. Slowly his leg, that was right now occupied by the little filly, started to tingle and Arturo again tried to entangle with her. Why did he go out by him self, he couldn't find the praying pools and was pretty sure he would never find them. As well as he knew that he was already lost in the city streets and would probably walk down towards the forbidden forest, instead of going back home. He grew a little bit anxious, when he remembered his fathers words, to stay strong and help others in need. It suddenly seemed to the colt, as this was the right situation for him.

Her pale eyes stared at him while he tried to put himself together, and stop choking on his snack, curious. Obscura was kept away from all other foals, so this was a new experience for her to have. What were they like? Was he a normal foal? Obscura felt his legs pull away from hers, and tried to get out of his way, waiting eagerly for his response. She was visibly disappointed when he spoke, admitting that he didn't know where the Praying Pool was, though she was a bit more hopeful when he said that he was heading that way too. "Yes, we can help each other." Obscura said in her soft, whisper of a voice. She had and always would be a gentle soul.
When she finally found her hooves again and put them right on the ground, she stood and shook her coat out, down to the tip of her tail. She looked around for any clues that might lead to where the pool was, and then sighed gently. The city was a confusing place. "What is there to pray for with your mother?" The filly asked finally, taking some steps toward a direction that neither of them came from, thinking that the most logical direction to go.

With his long legs, Arturo hat so sort out, where to put those 4 sticks. When he finally managed to stay straight, he followed Obscuras example and shook his body and little pieces of dirt flew away from his fur, he had already shed from his soft foal fur and between the dark hair, some sand colored dapples showed. He bowed his head down to his breast and scratched wildly at an itching spot, before he looked up at her and followed her observing view. Just as before, he was clueless about the right direction and tried to figure out, where to go in the forest of concrete, ivy and bushes. When she asked about his intentions he thought for a moment, "she's with the unicorns now and I pray for her to be happy and safe. I hope she has some knight like my father to protect her." He was never sad, when others asked him about his mother. His father had told him not to mourn too much for his mother as she was at a wonderful place now. "My father said that he will go to her in some years and that I can't come with him. He will take care of her again and protect her. He told me that I have to be strong before he goes, so I can protect my self and my herd." He presented his knowledge with a swollen and proud breast and a showing lower neck. Smiling he looked back at her. "If you like to have a guard, I'll gladly protect you! I'm Arturo Alvarez and I will be the greatest knight on the Isle of Olde!"
When he realized, that she had already started to walk ahead, he followed her in a bouncy trot. Still showing all the strength he seemed to be able to show within his chest area and with a flag like raised tail and his short tail hair flowed behind him. When he finally caught up with her, he made some bouncy trot movements next to her and then fell into a more relaxed walk, again looking around and trying to recognize any particular building or bush. "I think we went around those buildings... but I am not sure, we could go around the corner and there might be the way." he showed the direction with his nose and then looked back to her. "What is your name?" he asked plainly. Out of a sudden the shy colt had grown some self trust, his knight story's always made him more confident and braver.

Obscura watched him for a moment as he righted himself as well, and then scratched, all the while looking around for where the Praying Pool might be. The city wasn't terribly large, but for a filly that had rarely encountered it, and on the few times, been led in a group, the city seemed to be all the same, towering spires of human-made objects, covered in greenery. It was a pretty place, with the remaining intact glass from buildings glittering in the sun, however staring made her eyes water and she was forced to look away. It was then that the other foal answered her question about his mother, and she nodded her head in understanding. "The unicorns are benevolent, they watch over your mother surely. There are a great many knights that have gone to see them as well. I know she is happy and safe, but it is always good to thank them for what they do for us." Obscura said, smiling a little bit, glad to have met another foal that was raised at least somewhat like her. Were all the others like this? If so, why was she kept so far away?
The dark filly cocked her head to the side as he puffed his chest out with pride, but then connected it with his story and nodded. "I believe I will rise to great things. My parents wish for me to be Queen, but it is not meant to be. There is another that will be bride to our Unicorn king, when he is grown." Obscura replied, thinking about it a moment. She wasn't pompous, or bragging, just stating fact. Or what she thought was fact at any rate. She smiled at him as he offered to guard her. "Yes, you need to practice every day to be your best, right?" She said softly, wondering at his two names. Vasska had two names as well, but it was such a rare occurrence that she couldn't help but be curious. "My name is Obscura. It's nice to meet you." Obscura added, a touch too late after his request, finally remembering her manners. It was normal for her though, as she walked around with her head in the clouds.
Once he was at her side again, she glanced over where he mentioned. It was thankfully shady there, and she nodded, eager to go where her eyes weren't burning. She rounded the corner at Arturo's side, and walked into the darkness that was there. Some sort of smell started tickling her nose, but Obscura pushed it away, not knowing what it was, or what it meant.

As Arturo listened to her words he perked his hears. "They want you to be Queen? Wow. But who will it be, if not you?" he watched her, wondering how she knew all this. He didn't knew Vasska, he just had seen him sometimes wandering around with his scar on his forehead. The lost horn. "Did the unicorns tell you that you won't be Vasskas Queen? How do you know?" he couldn't help, he was so curious about this. Vasska will be the King he is going to protect when they all are grown. He probably would like to protect Obscura as well, as his Queen, but she'd said that it's not her to be Queen so Arturo shook of the thought.
Arturo had kept staring at her, she was a wondrous one, he cocked his head at her until she told him his name while she seemed to be somewhere else with her thoughts. "Well nice to meet you too, Obscura." Happily he walked towards the darker and shady corner of the street and followed Obscura into the darkness. "I think this must be a shortcut or something, but strange it is so dark." he said eagerly. As he kept trailing her, he smelled something too, it was a faint and old smell. It seemed like it had started to faint away years ago, but somehow it still lingered at the place. The ground was covered in cracked tiles, some of rubber like texture, others where straight and slippery. Arturo had to watch his step and looked down on the ground to watch his step, but still he slipped on one of those slippery tiles that must have crumbled from the walls. "This is strange Obscura, I haven't been here before. Is this a human building? There is debris everywhere." He looked around and saw a corridor that let farther into the building and on the other side there was great broken gate that allowed some sun beams to crawl in. Plants had started to grow through the broken gate and to re populate the corner of it. "Maybe we should walk down that corridor there? It seems to be the only way out?" He felt a little bit uneasy, but he tried to be brave.

"The Unicorns have granted me brief glimpses of what is to come, since I can remember." Obscura said softly, thoughtfully, her eyes straying down to her hooves as they walked, the sound of their little hollows making a pleasant ring against the pavement, though out of sync with Arturo's prancing, proud steps. "Sometimes they are false, but I feel they would not lie to me about something so important. My parents wish it to be, and they disrespect the Unicorns' wishes, even though I tell them that it will not happen that way." A small sigh escaped her lips then as she allowed her head to drop slightly, her pale eyes heavily lidded. "I am beginning to see that my family is more concerned with power than piety. They want to serve the Unicorn Prince as closely as possible, but I don't think it's for the right reasons. You know?" Obscura added, looking over at Arturo questioningly. It sounded like he did not face the same problems as she was coming to realize in her own life, but it was precious to her to have found someone she did believe was doing the right thing for the right reasons.
Though the darkness was where most suffered, Obscura's eyes felt a brilliant relief at not having to battle the direct sunlight. Though she did not have any special powers such as nightvision, the faint light that stole in from broken windows was enough for her to see. However, it was slippery, which she had not noticed initially, and her legs threatened to come out from under her again. Shaking her mane away from her face now, she looked over at Arturo as he questioned the building's make. She couldn't say she knew anything about the City, except that humans had lived here long ago, and so she could only imagine that the colt's suspicions were correct. Her nose tingled again with that faint smell, something that caused her to want to run away. It made nos sense to her waking mind, however, so she followed after Arturo carefully. "Yes, I think that looks alright." Obscura replied, nodding, swallowing the fear that had started to creep up her neck, causing her hairs to rise. The filly stepped a little closer to Arturo, the warmth of him making her feel a little safer.
Obscura stepped toward the lit corridor, and then felt something slide along her spine, sharp and cold. She let out a little scream and jumped sideways away from it, looking wildly for what had been the cause. There dangled a giant hook from a chain that was still bolted to the ceiling, the tiles having crumbled away from it long ago. Her jumping away caused it to swing back, clattering against other hooks that were hiding in the dark, and suddenly they were all clanking and swinging to-and-fro, their slightly rusted, but still sharp tips swinging in all directions. The sound awakened bats that had apparently been living in the second floor, which came rushing towards the foals before going out the window, shrieking as they did so. Panicked, not wanting to be caught by the bats, or by the sharp metal that was swinging around them, Obscura started to run down the alleyway, hoping that Arturo would be at her side, though her hooves slipped and she rounded a corner rather abruptly. While her body made the turn, her slippery legs ddid not, and they came out from under her once more, sending her flying further down, into a pile of strange white things which clattered when she touched them. The smell was the strongest it had been.

Arturo had just nodded at Obscura when she told him about her parents intentions and the power game they were playing. He did not quite understand what Obscura was talking about, as his father was such a simple character, only driven by the right thing to do for the herd. Arturo had been raised with these believes and never imagined to do things out of the wrong reasons. He pondered about it and remembered his mothers stories of horses and unicorns that have been bad. Oh Obscura was tree years younger, but in her head she was way older than Arturo, but he wouldn't have noticed. He was such a simple little colt, frolicking and always obeying his father, trusting and loyal. There wasn't room for anything else, his fathers believes clouded the colts head entirely.
As Obscura stepped closer to Arturo and her shoulder touched his butt, he looked back at her, smiling. Yes indeed, the warmth of his fellow gave him some strength. As she stepped ahead of him and out of the sudden jumped, she almost bumped into Arturo. He struggled backwards where one of the hooks dangerously swung towards him, he ducked his head and pulled in his tail, making himself small to avoid the sharp rusted hook. The clanking sound was echoing through the hallway as the bats came shrieking towards them. Arturo gaped at them and his heart started to race in his little chest. Just as Obscura started to run away, Arturo followed her headless, his little hooves slipping on the underground. Yet another hook was flying towards Arturo. While he tried to run past it, it slit into his butt, opening his skin just a little bit and causing Arturo to pull in his tail again with a yelp. Just as Obscura slipped, Arturo tried to slow down but on the slippery underground his back legs had lost him and he fell on his butt. With a thump he crashed into Obscura and the pale sticks flew clattering around them.
An animal scull rolled right next to them, when Arturo opened his eyes again. He felt his heart racing and the fear in him grew stronger with every breath he took. He looked down at the skull and his jaw dropped wide open. He tried to struggle free of Obscura and the bones that where covering them and lying in between the two foals. As he finally had made it up he backed up away from the bones but right behind him the clinking of the hooks reminded him that he should rather stay. The bat's screeching sound had echoed away but now the screeching of the rusted hooks was still filling the hall and the smell made Arturo tremble, but he remembered his secret vows he spoke with his father every day and so he stepped closer to Obscura. "Obscura, are you alright?" He offered his nose as comfort and lowered it towards her, stepping a little bit closer. "What is this?" He looked around uncertain, staring horrified at the pile of bones. "Is that a horses scull?" He called out breathless, staring at the skull that had rolled down to them. It's teeth still intact but missing it's under jaw, the hollow eyes seemed to stare at the foals and the teeth were snarling at them.

She felt a sharp pain as she realized that Arturo had clattered into her as well, all of his force sent sliding into her and jamming what she later realized to be petrified bones into her flesh. Luckily, they were all solid, none broken or splintered, so all she would come away with were bruises, but at the moment, she was frightened and in pain. Arturo scrambled to get away from the pile that smelled disturbing, like nothing that was natural or right, and she watched him for a moment, helpless. The bats escaped through the far window, flying out into the light where they would be blinded much as she was, and in that moment of feeling some closeness with them, she felt less afraid. But upon drawing her pale eyes back to the scene at hand, with the hooks still swinging slightly, and the bones spread out all around her, entangled with her, she felt a dread that she had not felt before, except after one of her dreams.
She heard Arturo's voice as he neared her again, him having come to his senses, and she gave a vague nod, before pressing her nose against his for comfort. A chill ran down her spine before she tried to get up, putting her legs underneath her before she found a way to navigate away from the horrific pile she had found herself in. She glanced back at the skull that Arturo spoke of, its eyes empty, its mouth full of teeth grimacing at them in some sort of mockery of a smile. It was stained, not bleached as it would have been in the sun, and brought a sense of mortality to the situation. She knew not what they were in, however it was a place to be feared. "Yes, I think it's a skull." She finally said, breathless, looking away from it, as its smile was doing nothing to comfort her. "We should leave." She said then, looking at him for a moment, before looking to either direction. They were in the dark, with only the high, dusty windows for light. With the forest of chains and hooks around them, she wasn't sure which way they had come in from, and she was finding it harder and harder to get her senses back. Fright had gripped her, possibly the first time in her waking life. She took a tentative step forward, looking out the window the bats had flown to, and then back to Arturo. "Maybe we should follow this wall..."

Arturo's fear crawled up and down his spine, but the soft and warm touch of Obscura's nostrils calmed him down a little bit. When she tried to get up, Arturo stepped a little bit back to make room for her, but not too far away, just to stay as close as possible. Suddenly Arturo felt a sting on his croup and looked back, he saw the cut and wet fur all around it. His dark dark fur slightly stained by red blood.Arturo frowned and tried to reach the cut, but couldn't reach it to lick over it, so he turned back to Obscura. The skull still grimacing at them, Arturo felt uneasy again. They should leave, yes. Obscura was totally right.
The clanking and screeching of the rusted hooks became slightly slower, but the darkness still pressed on the two foals and the smell of death kept lingering. Arturo as well had never been challenged like this, he felt helpless, what should he do, what if a beast lived inside here, maybe that's why all the animal bones were lying around. There was even horse remains, as the skull had shown them. How awful, what consumed so many big animals? And why where all these claws hanging from the ceiling? Now that Arturo tried to make sense of it, he felt a sudden fear that made him breathless. He searched for an escape, but the way of claws was too dangerous to go again. When Obscura mentioned the wall as possibility to escape, he nodded and took a step next to her, pressing his body next to her. “I am afraid too, Obscura. But I think we will make it out, I will make sure that nothing will happen to you.” His voice didn’t sound as confident as it had when they met, but he tried at least to speak out some comforting word. Uncertain he stepped forward, walking along the wall. The tiles were slippery here again, to their left was the wall, to their right were slits in the ground and the awful smell was here as well. Arturo turned his head towards the wall and walked down the small and slippery aisle, his heart pounded in his chest but he concentrated on his little hooves to place them carefully on the stained tiles. As they came closer to the broken gate where the bats had escaped, his fear turned into joy, soon they would be out of this horrific place. The anxiety in his chest that had seemed to tear out his lungs slowly vanished and breathing came easier to him. Soon the greenery covered the ground, close to the gate and the tiles had cracked open here and there, soft light beamed through stained windows and the broken gait, but it was still closed.
Arturo stepped closer to the gait as he walked from side to side, to see how they could get out. The broken part was in the upper corner but the material of the gate seemed worn out and frail. “Obscura,...” he turned towards her, “we could try to break this. It doesn’t seem very hard.” He pawed against it and the gate clattered in it’s tracks and pieces crumbled from the broken corner.

As she stood, she could see Arturo looking behind him, and then smelled the fresh metallic scent of blood as it flooded to her nostrils. She glanced up at the hooks that were still dangling from the ceiling, their creaking on their hinges beginning to sound like inscrutable cries. When they crashed into one another, the sound rang out and echoed through the hallways, as if to tell them just how alone they really were in this wretched place. "I will make sure nothing will happen to you." Arturo said to her as they pressed themselves against the wall, and she gave a little nod, swallowing hard. It was a challenge to maintain faith now, but she couldn't imagine why the Unicorns would send her to such a horrible place, never to return again. The filly lifted her eyes to the filtering light from the dust-coated windows and reminded herself that yes, there still was an outside with the blazing sun and the singing of birds, rather than the smell of decay and wails of the hooks that had (thankfullY) fallen into disuse.
They walked along, slowly but surely, their long sticks of limbs interfering occasionally, though there was no laughter. Just determination. At one point, Obscura leaned over to look down into the grate beneath the building, however the smell was too strong and she coughed, feeling immediately sick to her stomach. It seemed like eternity until they were at the gate, and she could feel grass beneath her hooves again. The smell of flowers was a blessing to her nose, and she filled her nostrils with them as they exited, putting her entire face into a bush of wild roses. Her partner, however, had a mission to complete. She heard him ask for assistance in breaking the gate, and she gave a little nod, straying away from the flowers and back to his side. She reared up and brought her hooves down on it as strongly as possible, watching the material start to give way from both foals' efforts. As they worked, again Obscura smelled Arturo's blood. "Are you alright?" She asked, stopping and looking him over, finding the gash on his croup rather quickly. It didn't look too terrible, nothing that would kill him, but undoubtedly it had to have hurt.
Finally, the gate gave way and they were free at last. As Obscura put her hooves on the threshold into the rest of the city, she remembered just how lost they were again. Their past adventure didn't quite solve that. The filly realized she was becoming dizzy, her head swirling and her knees buckling, likely from coming down from the shock of that evil place as well as the physical activity, and thus she laid down in the bits of grass that were available to her. "I'm sorry" she said quietly, looking up at Arturo for a moment. "I don't fee..." Obscura's pale eyes started to roll back into her head, before it fell to the floor, dead weight.

Arturo had to smile about Obscura as she buried her face in a bush of wild roses. She was such a special character. Unicorns bless her, Arturo thought before he asked her to help him, bringing down the gate. He followed Obscura's example and reared, to crash his little hooves into the decayed roll-up door. When she asked him about his wound, he nodded and smiled at her. “It is nothing. I am pretty sure it will heal really quickly.” Of course it stung a bit, but he was way too proud to admit and so ignored it.
As the gate gave away, bits and pieces flew around and dust whirled around the foals. The sun beamed against their faces and a little bit blinded, Arturo stumbled over the broken gait, outside. Outside, it felt so good he thought, sorting his legs. Obscura apparently did pretty well, but she was probably more used to be blinded than Arturo was. Arturo looked at Obscura, they both were a little bit dusted now and the dirt showed well on their dark coats. Through, it looked less dirty on Arturos fur than on Obscura’s marvelous dark pelt. “You know, this was certainly no shortcut. Through I think I remember this pla….” suddenly Obscura went down and looked up at Arturo, closing her eyes and fainting away.
Arturo froze in shock, what happened to his new friend? He had never seen something like this before and his legs felt like they were glued on the ground. Again fear crawled up his spine and he felt lost, what should he do? “OBSCURA!” He yelled and helplessly looked around, before he approached her sleeping body with her white eyes that stared creepily back into her head. He softly pushed his nose at hers, but no reaction came from her. He tried with pushing her, harder and harder and grabbed her mane with his muzzle and pulled on her curly hair. “Obscura, please wake up. Obscura? Wake UP!!!” Desperately he pushed his nose into her soft fur and finally gaped at the filly in defeat. At least her breathing was visible to him, so she wasn’t dead. He stared back at the building they just had escaped from. He wanted to get out of this place so bad. Again he prodded his nose against Obscura and pawed at her shoulder with his legs, that moved her whole body. He had to wake her up! He yelled at her again, “WAKE UP OBSCURA, WE HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE”.

There was a pale foal out in the wilderness, alone but with a disturbing determination in his eyes. He did not look at her for the longest time, but when he did, his mouth opened and darkness poured from it, oozing onto the ground like tar. He smiled as he vomited this tar, and the world turned to blackness around him, until he melted into it himself, vanishing. The blackness inched towards her, roiling and bubbling, until it started to climb her hooves and up onto her shoulder, pulling her flesh away from her bone. She screamed but nothing came out. This was how she died.
Obscura's eyes flashed open and she took a deep breath as if she hadn't breathed properly for minutes, before sitting up and looking around wildly. Everything was bright and sunny, the grass a vibrant green, the roses a buttermilk white transitioning into a bumblebee yellow. And there was the colt she had been following - Arturo, looking at her with extreme concern. For a second he shaded her from the sun and she could see him properly, dappled as she was, but with pink lips and trusting brown doe eyes. Much different than the pale creature of her dreams. "I...need to leave the city. I saw something out there." At this point, her visions were not always truthful, nor could she count on timeline, but this one was disturbingly real, despite the clear fantasy aspect of it. "The Unicorns allow me to see some things that others haven't seen yet." She explained as she stood up on shaky, stilted legs, and then looked onto the plains. She didn't know which direction the pale foal could be in, but she trusted that he was out there somewhere, and she would find him. As she walked forward, where she saw grass sprawling from the city, Obscura couldn't help but pause and look back at her newfound companion. "Will you guard me with this as well? I feel as though he might be dangerous." She said, her brows furrowing slightly as she tried to focus on what she saw. How could a creature do that? Her skin crawled for a moment as they passed over the building they had just escaped from, wondering whether her dream or that experience had been more terrifying. Whichever one decided to win out, she'd rather not go forward alone.

Arturo watched Obscura frantically, observing the twitching of her legs and the shaking of her body before she suddenly opened her eyes. His heart stopped for a second, then he lowered his head and watched her, gaining orientation. Obscura looked at him deeply before she told him, that she needed to leave the city. Leaving the city? Why? And how did she see anything? Arturo's young mind was confused, but then she told him about the unicorns that showed her things in the future and he remembered her telling it to him before. As long as they quickly left this place, he didn't mind. This adventure made him forget about all his everyday life with his father. He wasn't thinking about him or the praying pool anymore. He was going on a mission, assigned by the unicorns! Arturo nodded eagerly and beamed at Obscura, despite the recent adventure they had experienced, "oh of course I will." How dangerous could it become, after what they had seen in the building right behind them. Naive as he was, he was strong enough to withstand everything evil now. He walked next to her and got the hint of fear from her, "don't worry Obscura. I will keep you safe, safer this time." Seriously he looked at her and one last glimpse wandered towards the building.
As they walked out of the city, Arturo tried to walk Obscura through the shadow of tall grown trees and over hanging bushes. She didn't have to tell him, that the sun light bothered her, he had figured it out by him self. He felt comfortable with her, something he rarely had experienced with other foals. Soon they reached the planes and the grass here had grown long and tickled as it brushed along their sides. "What have you seen Obscura? You seemed terrified after you woke up." For the first time, after her awakening he seemed concerned again. He had thought about it and what if it was some other beast? He might be dangerous, she said, who? But if the unicorns had told her, it must be serious and a task they had to tend to. The unicorns had showed it to her for a reason, and so was his presence.

Obscura smiled at him softly, nodding her head a little bit. It was nice to be treated with respect, but not with all the fanaticism that came with her family. "Thank you," the dappled filly said gently, as they started to weave their way out of the city, crumbling towers to either side of them falling away to the grasslands beyond, where she lived for most of her life. Though it was technically more dangerous than the inhabited city, it was more comfortable to her, was where she was meant to be. The long strands tickled her nose as they walked, lifting her legs high to try to gain leverage over the plants. "Do you go out of the city much?" Obscura asked Arturo as they walked, her heavily lidded eyes trying to separate colors, looking for the foal from her dreams. Foal he was, but older than she or even Arturo, if she had to venture a guess. Then she realized that Arturo was specifically keeping her in the shadows so that she wasn't pained by the sun. She couldn't help but smile at that, and continued her search with more intensity.
"I saw a foal around our age, though no one I had ever seen. I'm guessing he is from another herd." Obscura replied to Arturo's question, looking over at him for a moment, concern settling on her face. "Black stuff was coming out of him, though he was very pale." A shiver ran down her spine as she thought about it again. No, good tidings did not come at the heels of whoever this was. And where was he?
