"Come back to me" A private roleplay between raveniice's Io & themoonphase's Salvatore. Timeline: About a day before the beginning of Objective Five.
With teams assigned and tasks received, both Io and Salvatore discover that they will be on completely different islands, and the two decide to spend their last day together before they head their separate ways to accompany their team mates. After all, the outcomes of their missions are uncertain.
It was a chilly morning. Fog from the night still hovered low to the ground, giving the green landscape an almost spooky appearance. The Exile scout was standing in the grass silently watching the waves a few yards in front of her crash onto the sandy beach. She had received her instructions only yesterday and was as pleased as she could be to have been assigned a good team lead by Stormcry. She was a mare that Io had only met once before, but she admired her nonetheless. Nearby tweeting in the small cluster of trees to her left caught her wandering attention for a few seconds before she continued to silently stare out at the ocean again, lingering there by the coast like a ghost, similar to the fog that still clung to the ground beneath her. Her thin coat was as fluffed up as it could get in order to try to protect her from the morning chill, but being a horse suited for hot climate, it wasn't much use and it barely made a difference. Io shook every once in a while in order to keep her blood flowing. For the first time she seemed to be moping. Her head was low, her ears lightly flattened, and the look in her eyes was rather dull and cloudy, making it hard to read what she was truly feeling. But suddenly the faint sound of approaching hoof steps alarmed her once it reached her ears, and quickly she turned around her head low as she took a few steps back. Could it possibly be a Bachelor stallion? She prayed to the unicorns for her to be wrong!
"S-Sal?" The shortened version of his name was new to her still, but she spoke it as if she had always done so. Her sunset red eyes were wide in surprise but her demeanor had instantly brightened, and her relief showed on her pale face. "It's you!" The sweet happiness in her voice was clear. Io trotted up to meet him, embracing him once she was close enough. With a soft smile on her face she pressed her forehead against his chest, closing her eyes and breathing in his familiar scent. Oh how she had longed to see him for what seemed like ages. She had needed to see him before she left for their home land back on the Southern Isle, just in case anything were to happen to her. She had reassured herself that everything would be alright, she was going back there with a group. But in the back of her mind she couldn't help but worry of the dangers that could possibly have sprung up after the day they had left for the refuge of the East Island. "I-I was afraid I wouldn't get to see you before I left for the island..." Her voice grew quiet. She wished he was accompanying her.

It had been far too long since Salvatore had seen his belle. The budding pair hadn't spoken since just after the last war, and now knowing that their distance would be pushed even further with Io's return to the Southern Isle, Salvatore made certain that they would have just one last night together before her long departure. The curly-eared dunalino crept through the cool dawn fog; fall mornings could bring a truly unsettling chill, and this gloomy morning was no exception. The weather seemed eerily compatible with the mood - herds would be separating and horses would have to bid goodbye to loved ones, and there was always uncertainty of a positive return. That escaped Salvatore's mind entirely, though. He knew that he would always bring a return to Io, no matter how long they were apart. He had that sort of confidence in himself.
The tall, skinny male slowly approached the beach where he knew he would be expecting his mare. He remembered her telling him how she enjoyed spending time along the shores, and he understood why. Though he couldn't make out any sight of water, he picked up the scent of the salty sea rather quickly, and ears pricked toward the sound of waves quietly crashing on the sand he now stepped on. Please, please, please, the stallion pleaded with submissive ears as he squinted at a figure ahead, which vaguely took the form of a horse. The silhouette seemed to realize his appearance as its head shot up, but just as quickly it began a retreat. Not a foolish move - menacing creatures infested the Eastern Isle, both horse and predator alike. "Io," Salvatore muttered in relief as she burst through the fog in a trot toward him with a call of his name. He himself was comforted by the sound of her sweet voice, let alone the sight of her, and she seemed just as elated to see him. Nothing pleased the guard more than to see this mare's fiery orbs light up as they just did.
His eyes glued shut and he grinned wildly as the blonde mare embraced him. He pulled his chin to his throat and inhaled the sweet scent of her flowers, and he shivered slightly, stamping his feet with excitement regarding the lotus he had given her which was still strung in her silky locks. With a gentle caress to the side of her neck he welcomed the embrace he craved far too much.
"I-I was afraid I wouldn't get to see you before I left for the island..."
His ears pricked forward and he stepped back so he could reach her face. Great Compromiser, it was the prettiest face in all of Chevalin, and Salvatore slowly became aware that in just a few hours he would have to leave it once more. "You thought you could leave without saying goodbye?" He spoke in what was almost a whisper, pressing his nose against the scar on her forehead.

"You thought you could leave without saying goodbye?"
She looked up at him with a small smile as he stepped back. Those blue eyes of his never ceased to take her breath away, and they complimented his handsome features perfectly. Little did she realize just how much of her thoughts were comprised of just him; where he was, what could he be doing, curious thoughts of that nature. It was hard for her to offer her love to another, but then again it had also been three years past since she had lost her family, and although she knew nothing and no one could ever fill that gap in her heart, she had no doubt that Salvatore could. Since the day she had met him, which may not have been too long ago, she already longed for him whenever she didn't see him. Was this... love that she was feeling? She had felt it before but she had let it consume her and she fell hard when she lost it. But no, she would fight to keep this one.
"No..." Io's voice was just barely above a whisper. She welcomed his touch like spring rain to parched flowers. She was overwhelmed with how strong her feelings were beginning to grow for him. Usually she would have kept her distance, but she couldn't find it in her heart to purposely stay away. "Of course not." She giggled, lifting her head in order to press the side of her cheek against his. "I had to see you before I left Sal, I had to..." Her voice unexpectedly wavered near the end of her sentence. Tears tugged at the corners of her eyes and she quickly looked down in order to hide her embarrassment. Her chest was tight and her heart was aching. Did he know how just how much he meant to her?

Salvatore gazed into the pale mare's eyes longingly as she spoke; so longingly that he barely clued into the words she said. Her sunset eyes glistened like the stars that just began to fade in the early morning sky where the clouds weren't hiding them away. Thoughts of her adventure began to take control of his mind as she spoke of saying goodbye, and suddenly his bones began to shake with worry. "Must you leave, Io? I cannot handle one more day without you. The Southern Isle, Great Compromiser knows what lurks there since the fires; you may be hurt and I would never forgive-" the Marwari blurted, but his words were cut short with the sight of her tears. He lowered his head with hers and began to weep silently. Holy hell, what's gotten into me? He cursed himself, for the bombproof stallion never expressed soft emotion like this. Io truly had begun to consume him. His constant thoughts were of her, and now he knew that these feelings he had for her truly were otherworldly. He would die if it meant keeping her safe, but this time he simply had no choice.
"Io," the stallion began as he nuzzled her chin in request for her to raise her head. He pressed his forehead against hers and squeezed his eyes tight before he continued. "Io, I-I have to tell you," his voice trembled, "I need to tell you that I am in love with you. It may be too soon but I feel it still. You have stolen my heart, and no matter how impossible I thought it would be you have proved me wrong." Salvatore began to weep harder with every word. "You are about to embark on this journey and neither you nor I can know of the outcome but I have come today to confess this to you because I cannot let anything happen to you without you knowing how I feel."
Finally. Finally he told her and finally she knew. The words came out messy, which is uncommon for the dunalino, but he knew she would understand. Salvatore had no idea how she would react, and though the thought remained that she may not feel the same, she knew and it made him feel a million times more confident in their situation.

Every word he spoke made her heart ache the more. She fought the tears that threatened to fall from her eyes. But the sight of him weeping weakened her and in response to his touch she lifted her head and took a step toward him in order to hold him close.
I am in love with you.
Her eyes suddenly widened and she took a step back, her ears flicking forward. H-had she heard him correctly? Those words hit her like an ocean wave, and now her heart was pounding in her chest. Io could no longer hold back her tears. They fell from her eyes, tracing her pale cheeks, one teardrop after another. She spent the next few moments simply staring at him, her gaze locking onto his. "S-Salvatore..?" Her gentle tone was questioning. Did she love him in as well? She couldn't help but wonder why he had chosen her, out of anyone she was sure he could have his pick. He was handsome, sweet, charming, and... and she could picture a future with him.
"Sal." Finally she smiled, her long lashes fluttering as she tried to stop her tears. "You have captivated me since the moment you saved me that night." The pale mare laughed gently before she reached her muzzle forward to nuzzle him affectionately. "My mind shies away from feeling this way, but my heart betrays me." Io knew she had to tell him. For their sake she had to. What if she never returned? No. She would return. She wasn't going to loose someone she loved, not ever again. "I believe I love you too." A light blush warmed her white face. "I can think of no other word that would describe how I feel for you."
As a cool wind blew, Io shivered slightly. She had nearly forgotten the cold of winter. So much had happened in seemingly such a short time. The war. The thought of it returned to her mind. What a time to find love. The herds were seemingly in chaos, it was a rather unsettling time. But she wouldn't let that steal away anything from her. Not this. The fact of her leaving without him to return to the Southern Isle for a scouting mission saddened her, yes, but she would return to him.
"I promise you," she began. "I will come back." She touched her nose to his, just as she had that day they'd spent together at the coast. "I will always come back to you."

The guard's heart nearly dropped. Not in a million years would he think he was worthy of the goddess that was Io, nor did he think he would live to understand how comforting and nourishing love really wass. It was like a drug; it certainly felt like that way, because hearing "I love you too" sent him into a trance so heavy it made his knees shake. A trance so heavy it would send the stallion's body to the chilly ground below him, unable to comprehend the words his mare continued to speak. Instead he lay there on his back and gazed up at the sky that was just beginning to illuminate, where black clouds reflected the light of the rising sun. Salvatore gave a wide grin, and just as he regained his ability to speak, it began to drizzle. With a laugh and a shout of joy, the guard jumped back up to his feet to face Io. "You do! Hell yeah you do baby!" He boomed as he continued to laugh. He probably looked like a complete fool, but he simply didn't care, and it was such a change of emotion - just a few moments ago the blonde male could barely muster the courage to confess, but now he felt more happiness than he ever had before.
Watching her slowly with happy tears tugging at the corners of his eyes, Salvatore flagged his long tail and stepped towards her, slowly coming down from his high. Gently he nuzzled her warm cheeks as he slightly pressed his ears back, intently listening to her words. "I will always come back to you," those were the words that made him weep again. He worried for his love, because neither of them knew what awaited her at their once-called home. "You better," he began, speaking as softly as I could. "Because now I don't know what I'd do if you were taken from me."
For infinite moments, the couple stood engulfing each other in a warm embrace that made Salvatore forget the cold drizzle that fell on their backs. The guard did not speak a word, as he was still taking in the words Io had just given him. Hell, was he lucky. With subtle movements he moved his muzzle from her cheek to her nose, where he once more pressed his forehead to hers. He looked into her stunning sunset eyes before pressed his own shut tight. "Marry me," he blurted. "Marry me, Io. Come back and spend the rest of your days by my side. There is nothing that would give me greater honour." His request was abrupt, but the feelings that shook the guard knew that what he wanted was for certain, and there would be no greater blessing in the world than to be able to call this angel of a mare his wife.

The scout was a bit taken back by his reaction. But his seemingly carefree spirit was what she adored the most it. As he nuzzled her cheeks she couldn't help but laugh. He was amusing at times, if not always. But now she couldn't bare to be sad or worry. Sure, yes, she was returning to the Southern Isle where anything could happen! But now, now she had a reason to return. You better. A rare smirk replaced her gentle smile. "How could I possibly ever stay away fr-" She stopped, and she swore so did her heart.
Marry me.
Io's eyes widened and she fell silent. Frantically her eyes searched his face, wondering, demanding if she had heard him right. "M-Marry..?" Her ears flattened and suddenly her gaze dropped to her feet. She stayed this way, silent for nearly a minute, letting the cool drops of rain trickle down from her mane to her face and tracing along her jawline before falling as droplets from her chin. But with nothing but happiness in her heart she decided to have a little fun with him. The weather may have been a little dreary and a bit on the chilly side, but water was one of her favorite things, and the light drizzle only brightened her mood. Suddenly she looked back up at him and smirked before she quickly tugged at a piece of his mane before skipping off ahead of him, her tail held high in a typical graceful arabian fashion. "Come catch me and we'll see." She teased, flashing him a playful wink as she circled him, prancing in the rain with her head held high. But just in case he might have been faster than her she swiftly transitioned from her graceful prancing to a steady canter. "Careful not to trip, Sal!" She called as she glanced over her shoulder, her eyes narrowing at her proposed challenge. "The grass is slick!"

Too soon, too soon, the stallion told himself. His head tilted as she repeated his question. "Yes. There would be no greater blessing than to call you my wife," he admitted to her gently, caressing the side of her nose with his own. He half-smiled at her reaction, and the pair stood in silence as a light gust of wind made their blonde locks dance together. The silence wasn't even one he could call awkward - he understood just how abrupt he had been, but there wasn't a sliver of regret in his bones. He could only hope she would agree.
"Come catch me and we'll see."
What is this I see? My love is a tease? He laughed at her mischievous taunt. His head jerked slightly as she tugged his hair, and he immediately leaped after her at her request. Io moved as gracefully as a butterfly, and she was just as hard to catch. Even an individual as agile as himself, especially with his guard training, had a hard time catching her, but that made her game all the more fun. "I'll chase you until you're mine," the dunalino called out to her, for his words spoke true. He would chase her for weeks if that's what it took. The mare began to run circles around him, and he stopped in his tracks, only rotating his head to watch her prance around him. He flashed her his wide, charming smile he knew she loved until she began to slow down - and that's when he pounced.
But Io's reflexes proved him too slow. He grumbled playfully as she cantered away, and he chuckled before calling out to her once more. "You are far too good for me, miss Io," he charmed her before nearly tripping on a small stone and furthering his stumble with the slick grass it sat in. Dammit, he cursed himself. He was never this clumsy, especially around mares! I guess love does that sort of thing to you.
Salvatore cantered on, slowly picking up his speed as his feet grew some traction before they were in a full gallop, trying to catch his mare just feet ahead of him. Her long tail flagged behind her, and one lock flew just high enough for him to reach and hold between his lips. "I've gotcha," He cheered between closed teeth. "Now the challenge will be letting you go."

The thrill of a chase was exciting. It had been far too long since she allowed herself to have fun like this. Throughout most of her years she had suppressed so much of her personality that, if anyone noticed, it would be surprising that her true self still remained. But it did. Hidden under lock and key, buried under worry, paranoia and grief. But not anymore, and definitely not today. The sound of their hoof beats against the ground resonated in her ears as she held them against her white head in order to prevent any rain drops from entering them. When she stole a quick glance behind her she could barely suppress her laughter as he nearly tripped.
I'll chase you until you're mine.
Those words echoed in the back of her mind, and they kept the smile on her face. For the next few minutes she'd thought she was keeping a good distance from him. Her legs moved swiftly under her and the slippery terrain was hardly an obstacle. But as she looked back she nearly squeaked in alarm, not realizing that he was only a few feet behind her. Unfortunately her long tail lead her to her defeat. At the sudden tug she slowed to a stop, turning her body so that she could see him. Io narrowed her eyes, giving him a daring stare as she flicked her tail. "So it seems you have." Her sweet smile returned, and she took a step toward him, her ears flicking forward. "I don't want you to ever let me go, Sal." Her voice was a soft whisper as she lifted her head to press her cheek against his. She stared into those handsome blue eyes of his, her chest swelling with happiness. "And Yes." She chuckled, remembering what he had proposed earlier. "I'll marry you."
