"Tales In The Shards"Ryuko x D'Angelo | Year 401, Spring
Everyone has anticipated a war, and now it seems it is finally happening. The tension is high between Olde and Bachelors and both seem to be preparing themselves for the worst. This has lead the Bachelor Scavenger stallion, Ryuko, to go into overdrive with his physical training. He was always an aficionado but now he is pushing for new extremes. The sun is high in the sky with intense heats and little wind. Not the ideal conditions to be training in, and Ryuko soon finds out he has maybe gone a little too far this time... D'Angelo might just be his rescue, if Ryuko will accept his help.

Thundering hooves marked deep imprints on Bachelor grounds, racing behind an invisible component. Ryuko could feel his heart beat pound in his chest as his legs began to tire from the days work he had done. However, no matter how much his toned muscles ached it wasn't enough. He had to go faster, for longer, or it wasn't enough. A war was on the horizon and Ryuko wanted to be ready to do his herd proud. The hills would rumble by the charging of hundreds of opponents, it was the perfect situation for such a competitive individual to be in. Therefore, he willed his legs to stretch further and strengthen the pace. His breath began to hitch with every inhale as his fiery coat was now lathered in sweat, the solar glare almost visible in it. He couldn't stop now.
Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath him and Ryuko struggled to even draw in a gasp to his tired lungs. Without noticing, he had run as far as the Outland Marsh and one of his legs had inadvertently gotten caught in the corner of a pool of quicksand. His crimson eyes widened and in a split second he threw his entire weight forward with every ounce of effort to make sure he would not be trapped. As he managed to release it, his built frame tumbled painfully to the ground causing an entire wave of shock to run through his body. Gasping for air he attempted to haul himself to his feet, and surprisingly managed to do so. Then, as he stood there with his chest heaving an incredible pain soared through his head and began to spread to every muscle and ligament. The adrenaline was wearing off and his vision blurred, causing him to collapse to the ground again. It was heat stroke, he was sure of it but there was no way for him to get to water like this. Sweet, blissful water...

The sun's heat beat down from a clear blue sky. The palomino pinto had spent most of it relaxing in a shallow creek after having spent the previous hours sparring with his twin brother Elian, who had insisted it be necessarily to prepare them for what was to come. But on a hot day like today there was no way D'Angelo was going to spend it training his tail off. Although, something suddenly distracted him from his relaxation. A familiar sound reached his ears and caused him to open his eyes. Hoof beats. The stallion raised his head out of the water, glistening droplets dripping from the scruff beneath his chin and throat. With his right eye he only managed to catch a glimpse of a red blur galloping across the hills towards the marshes, but when he turned his head to focus instead with his left eye, he swore he had seen that horse before.
Now curious D'Angelo pulled himself out of the creek, shaking off the water from his soaked coat, causing the two braids in his mane to slap against his shoulders. At the speed that horse had been running, he knew very well that it wouldn't mix too good with the heat. He took a deep breath before heaving a sigh. He would need to set off at a quick pace in order to catch up, and how he despised running. "Why today..." He muttered with a sarcastic smile and a roll of his eyes. But with that said he set off at a canter.
... The golden coated draft was careful about maneuvering his way through the marshes. Most of the terrain was soft and squishy underfoot, and he hated it more than anything. When he finally took his eyes off of the ground they almost immediately found the familiar red coat of the horse he had seen earlier. "I knew it!" He unknowingly said aloud as he quickly trotted over to the stallion's collapsed form. D'Angelo's glass blue eyes were wide as he looked him over. He was drenched it sweat. He raised his head suddenly, raising a brow as his eyes narrowed slightly. What could he have possibly thought, working this much out in the heat of a day like today? The thought of such an act almost reminded him of his brother, although Elian wasn't so foolish. "Hey." He began in a soft, cautious tone of voice as he nudged the stallion's shoulder. But now that he was this close... he thought he recognized him from somewhere. "Hm." He stared at him for a few more seconds before a thought came to his mind. I should probably get him some water or something...he looks exhausted. And with that he trotted off in search of a water source close by. D'Angelo was only away for about a minute before he came jogging back with a thick collection of soaked moss partially hanging out of his mouth. Although, instead of carefully bringing the dripping moss close to the stallion's mouth, he lost his grip on it and could only bite back a gasp of alarm as it plopped onto his face instead.
"O-oh crap..." He muttered, his ears flattening against his head.

His ears flicked from side to side as he could hear someone approaching, cursing himself inwardly and keeping his eyes tightly shut. Then, he felt himself be touched by the individual and his shoulder muscles twitched, causing his Crimson eyes to flick open and look up at the culprit. Somehow, he recognized the stallion but he couldn't quite place where or when he had met him. It was clear that he was from the herd though, by the mark on his face. "Hey..." Ryuko said in a low voice, looking away slightly because of the state he was in. "I'm fine, you don't have to-" he was cut off as the stallion trotted off and he grunted a little trying to get his breathing under control. As soon as he returned, there was suddenly a mass of moss on his face. "Thanks..." He said with a little unamused look on his face as he looked down so the moss would fall on his front leg and he could pick it up with his mouth. He'd never enjoyed the taste of soggy moss, but it was water nonetheless... He didn't know why he had been so stubborn as to carry on, he wasn't usually this irresponsible but something in him just wanted to be at the best that he could be for the war. He didn't know when war would come so even if the day was hot, he felt like he was pressing for time. Regardless, he was feeling the after effects now and he felt slightly foolish with this big stallion standing over his collapsed form. He sighed, he really had himself to thank for this stupidity didn't he? Dropping the slightly wet moss to the ground after he had gotten enough water from it, he looked up again with a curious look. "Do I know you?" He questioned, looking the stallion over and stretching his right hind leg to relieve the aching muscles.

The palomino gave an embarrassed smile at the thanks he received. But at his question D'Angelo's ears twitched, his light blue eyes growing a little wide. "I was going to ask you the same thing." He tilted his head slightly to the side. Where had he met him before? He was sure he had. "Hmm. Do you happen to know my brother?" Maybe that was where he knew him from. Although, Elian didn't really have many friends, he wasn't exactly the social type, or the talkative normal type either. That is, if he ever spoke at all.
"You do look familiar though." D'Angelo muttered, looking down at the red stallion. "The name's D'Angelo," he flashed a white smile, turning his head to the side as he did and lifting his chin ever so slightly up in the air as if he was showing off. "Ring any bells?" That sounded a bit more hopeful that he had wanted it to.

As he watched the other tilting his head and looking rather shocked that he had asked, Ryuko continued to true and puzzle out what it was exactly that he knew him from. Then he raised an eyebrow at the question, it would be helpful if he specified a little more. "It would help if you told me his name" he added with a crooked grin as one eyebrow raised. Nevertheless, he scanned the palomino coat and the markings, hoping he would find something that hinted who his brother was before he told him. "D'Angelo..." He echoed, looking pensative for a moment before looking up seriously. "Are you..." He paused, as if his next words carried a certain weight to them. "Elian's brother?" He stood up slowly glancing back at him as he stretched his neck too. "Right?" He tried to confirm as he chuckled a little internally knowing fully well he hadn't mentioned anything about his own reputation, just his connection to his brother. He looked down at the ground broodingly before taking a few stretching steps. Ryuko had only wildly guessed the likelihood but he was curious to hear the answer.

The golden stallion almost seemed to have brightened, beaming like an excited colt. "Yeah! That'd be me." D'Angelo couldn't suppress a chuckle as he fixed his attention on the other Bachelor. "I'm sorry but, I don't think I remember your name..." His ears flattened a little in embarrassment. It started with an...R or something, he was sure of it. But before he gave him a chance to respond he closed his eyes as he laughed suddenly. "Elian doesn't have many friends, so I knew I'd remember any that he had for sure."
But then D'Angelo's expression turned a little more serious when his gaze looked over the red stallion again. "You look like you've been overworking yourself." He raised a brow as a smirk snaked it's way onto his face. "Who're you trying to impress?" He teased.

Ryuko glances up at the golden stallion inspecting him again, ears flicking back and forth only slightly. Half a chuckle with an amused crooked smile crossed his face as the other seemed to beam like a colt when his name was spoken. "Ah, well..." He paused a little shaking himself off after getting to his feet "I'm Ryuko". A quiet scoff of agreement and a nod of his head showed that he understood what D'Angelo meant with Elian not having many friends but hey, to each their own. He was a good friend for all that Ryuko was concerned. Then golden boy mentioned his training and Ryuko looked away slightly, laying his ears back loosely. "If you hadn't heard, there's a war coming..." He closed his eyes and frowned a little "I don't train to impress anyone, I train to become better". Ryuko felt the need to clarify before staring off in to the distance s little.

D'Angelo watched him as he spoke. His ears turned towards him as he listened attentively. At the mention of the war the smirk on his face lessened to a frown. Of course it was something he could never have forgotten, but for the past few days it had been at the back of his mind, lacking his attention. The war seemed to have hardened his brothers heart even more. Elian had grown more cold, it was nearly frightening.
"How could anyone forget?" His voice grew quiet and his glass blue eyes found an interest in the distance around them, before his attention rested on Ryuko once more at his last few words. The palomino's gaze looked him over before resting on his face, as if trying to read it. Quietly he hoped that he hadn't upset him. "I guess there's nothing wrong with that." D'Angelo forced a smile back to his face. "Hey," he let out a quiet breath. "Let's get out of this marsh, huh?" He shook himself with a groan. "This heat is killing me, and besides," he cocked his head to the side. "It looks like you definitely need some time to cool off, Ryuko."

His eyes returned to the other stallion when he spoke again, sighing a little in agreement. No one could forget that a war was coming, it was the tension that hung in the air about every single member of the herd. It was the sleepless nights and the endless planning, leaving everyone restless. He felt D'Angelo's eyes rest on his face and his face went slightly redder, wanting to throw a begrudged what?! at him but there wasn't any time to do so. Before he could, more words left the stallions lips making a smile appear on them. "Ah, ye-" he wanted to respond a little stiffly before a softer tone reached his ears. "Alright..." he agreed, looking around the marsh with a glare. He had always hated this place. Then he looked over himself, still drenched with sweat and he had to agree. He started walking but paused a little, his attention caught by the beach in the distance. "Ah... Hey- Do you swim?" he asked a little curiously looking back at the palomino with an eyebrow raised, hoping that the answer was yes. He was practically dying to go for a swim in this heat but he would feel rude if he abandoned the other unannounced to do so.

The palomino's gaze followed Ryuko's as he looked toward the coast. The distant sound of crashing waves was carried as a whisper on the occasional warm blowing breeze. At the mention of swimming he nearly brightened. "Are you kidding?" He asked as his shoulders shook with well meaning laughter. "Swimming's my favorite pass time," D'Angelo tilted his head in order to focus his one good eye on his red counterpart. "Specially when the weather's this good."
With the thought of splashing through those blue waters and feeling the cold gust of mist against his body, D'Angelo was set. He skipped a few feet forward before he swiftly transitioned to a steady jog toward the beach, his cotton tail flicking from side to side in excitement. His golden coat was nearly dry now, despite him previously having been swimming. But due to the heat of today it wasn't surprising. D'Angelo's mood definitely brightened with the thought of swimming on his mind.

Ryuko noted the bightened exterior of the stallion when he had mentioned swimming, and found himself somewhat glad that he hadn't encountered someone afraid of water or with a complete hatred for swimming. It was so incredibly blissful to immerse in water on a day like this. A slight chuckle of agreement left his lips as he nodded "well thank god, I'm definitely in need of a good swim". He mused and cocked his head towards the ocean, starting to walk in its direction "Well, what are we waiting for then? Let's go!". He smiled genuinely, pausing to shake himself off slightly before continuing to walk. Then he noticed the other had already started into a jog towards their desired destination and Ryuko quickly hopped into a trot to catch up. With a curious glance, he scanned D'Angelo's face. "So Elian is your brother huh? You seem very different from him" he noted, hinting in his tone of voice that he didn't think this was a bad thing. Not that he thought there was much wrong with his friend Elian either, just that he was much too serious most of the time. He recalled though, having shared a few moments of laughter with the stallion's brother. He got along quite well with the other, but he wondered if Elian thought so too or if he was secretly bothered by the redhead.

At the mention of his brother the palomino's ears twitched. But his smile remained on his face as he thought about his twin. Sure, Elian was a bit... cold and clearly rather anti-social, or at least he portrayed it that way, but he wasn't as cold as others thought he was. Someone just needed to take the time to know him better was all. D'Angelo chuckled before responding, "it's hard to believe sometimes." The memories of him having to drag his brother around amused him. For one thing, he knew Elian was fun to tease, he was far too serious almost all of the time, but he did fluster quite easily. "We may be twins but we're almost polar opposites." He glanced over at the red stallion before continuing. "I actually asked him earlier today to come and take the day off with me but he flat out refused." He laughed.
The closer they got to the ocean the cooler the air seemed to get. He could just feel the cool refreshing mist that blew from the crashing waves. "Say, how'd you and Elian meet anyway? I'm curious." He thought aloud. Elian didn't have many friends, if he decided to make any at all, and that meant that he must have taken a liking to Ryuko, and even in just the short time that D'Angelo had spent with him he was already beginning to see why. "You know how quiet he is but he does bring you up into conversations from time to time." The palomino laughed. "You two must have really hit it off. I'm jealous."

The chuckle rang in Ryuko's ears and caused him to look curiously at his companion. "It really is" he nodded in agreement with the statement, taking another look at the other and being able to see the physical resemblance between the brothers at least. "Hmm, you could definitely say that." he added again. Matching the laughter of the other he shook his head a little and rolled his eyes with half a smile "Elian take a day off? Not even if the world was ending. But I sorta appreciate that about him". It was true, Ryuko had always liked the effort Elian put in his training too. Finding it admirable and being glad that he had found someone with a similar mindset, he had quickly taken a liking to the grumpy big guy.
The red stallion raised his face in the air and closed his eyes in enjoyment. The cool breeze from the ocean ran past his calm expression and it felt like heaven after over heating himself so much. "Hm?" he hummed, a little distracted for a moment before he registered D'Angelo's first question. "Oh, we were sent on a scouting mission together when I was just starting out" the stallion smiled a little at the memory. "I was even more driven and enthusiastic back then, I was sure Elian was going to want to kick me by the end of it... But I suppose everything turned out well" he added before raising an eyebrow in surprise at the other's last word. "Jealous?" he questioned back in a suprised tone "surely Elian isn't colt towards you at all right? He must be really protective of you"

Not even if the world was ending. The infantry stallion couldn't hold back his laughter. Just the subject of his brother though was making him miss him, a little in the least. Elian had been behaving a bit off lately as if he purposely wanted to keep himself busy. Busy and distracted. The palomino went silent for a few moments. But, what was he trying to distract himself from? Surely it couldn't have been him?
Ryuko's response to his question snagged his attention, pulling him from his thoughts and back to the real world. They were much closer to the beach. The salty scent of the ocean water was stronger now. D'Angelo wrinkled his nose at it as he blinked away the suns near blinding rays that often directly shined in his eyes. "Haha, I don't doubt that." He chuckled. But the mention of Elian possibly being protective of him brought a furious blush to the golden stallion's face. "Uh, well," he pouted slightly and looked away, his ears flattening against his head as his pale face burned in embarrassment. "In his own way I guess." D'Angelo managed to say. Elian had always played the older brother role, the dominant role, and although yes, he was quite protective of him, he never forgot to remind D'Angelo that he was younger and would forever be his baby brother. "He's not that much older, but he still treats me like a foal." He rolled his eyes, partially in amusement. "He says I don't act my age. But being serious all the time is no fun." He stuck out his tongue to emphasize his words, making a rather goofy looking face.
