The wind swept up from the sea and onto the plains at the heart of the Isle of Olde, the grass shimmering as it passed as if they too were the waves of the sea. The newly blooming wildflowers filled the air with their light aromas, following the breeze inland to entice it's creatures out into the land. It was only about mid-morning, so the sun hadn't begun to burn just yet and the cool wind was very welcome to the mare that was making her way over the large plains. With a soft yawn, she snorted loudly, shaking her head to help wake her up as she started a slow trot down a short hill.
Nefertiti groaned as she yawned again, topping the next hill and stopping in the shade of one of the few trees that grew out among the tall grass. She'd been out doing the early morning patrols near the Shatter Lands, where it was once again an uneventful night. The amounts of patrolling near the broken land bridge had grown since the battle with the bachelors, and it was taking its toll on her slowly. Though now she had something to look forward to.
A whole day off.
Shaking out her tired muscles, Nefertiti looked over the lands, thinking to herself. A smile crept over her face as she thought of friends of hers she would enjoy seeing in her free time, because the first one on her mind was Ganymede. She hadn't known her long, but she did enjoy her company quite a lot. She especially loved taking her out on adventures with her, since she hadn't been on Olde as long as the golden mare. Nef could show her many things she already knew of the land, and felt quite proud of showing her new friends her own discoveries. But where to bring her today...

The young mare stood slowly, arching her back and straining her legs into a stretch. Ganymede's mother had already left for her daily duties, so the grulla mare had most of the day for herself. Sure, she would have training on a later date, or even in the evening, but she would at least have the morning off. As she trotted out to the grassy fields, her nostrils flared with a heavy breath. A minuscule smile crossed her face, just brightening her eyes. It was a lovely day, and the weather would be pleasant. If only she could just relax.
Even when she was not supposed to be doing something, she was stressing. Mostly, about the war. It never left her mind. How could she not think about it? Whatever happened during the next phase of this conflict could alter the lives of every horse in all of Chevalin. That could definitely take a toll on someone, especially if they spent more time to themselves.
As Ganymede paced through the tall grasses, she shivered, the chilling wind suddenly less inviting. She lowered her head to take a mouthful of grass, and then raised it up again. When she did, her eyes immediately landed the silvery white coat of her friend Nefertiti. The mare questioned if "friend" was the correct term, or if "partner in crime" would fit better. As much as Ganymede disliked breaking rules, a small, rebellious side of her seemed to enjoy the adrenaline rush of doing dangerous things.

Spotting the familiar earthy hide of Ganymede, she sped into a gallop to help close the distance faster. She was super excited for today, since she'd planned on taking her up into the mountains. It wasn't a long trip from this plain, and she knew the passes by heart, plus who doesn't love cooling snow for a snack? Slowing down with a skid, tearing up some of the grass with her hooves, she came to rest in front of the Mage.
"Good morning, Anna~." Her voice came out sing-songy and excited. "What're your plans for today?"
Nefertiti leaned down to graze beside her. She was famished from a very early morning with no breakfast, and was more than okay with just stuffing her face full of juicy grass. Plus, she trusted this friend of hers enough to not be timid with her eating habits.

Ganymede shuffled slightly, perking her ears to meet in a nice arc at the center of her head. She watched the mare come closer to her, and she almost thought she was going to have to jump to the side in order to not be hit by an incoming mare. In the end, she merely had to take a step back, and chuckled quietly, tipping her head down. She did not like laughing much.
"Good morning Nefertiti," she greeted, her tone welcoming and smooth. "I do not have any duties for today, I believe." Her words were always very precise, but never did they sound forced. Her mother always told her to be smart and knowledgeable, so she pored over histories and praised any new information that she could receive. It annoyed some, when she used big words or replied in her cool, monotonous voice. Ganymede did not understand why it frustrated them so.
As the other mare lowered her head, she did the same. She took small bits of the dampened blades in her mouth, chewing them slowly and savoring their flavor. She flicked her tail, sighing contently as she looked at the horizon ahead. "Did you have something in mind for us to do?"

"Perfect." Nefertiti said through a mouthful of juicy grass, lifting her head to look towards the north. "How would you like to take a little visit to the northern coast today?" The milky buckskin asked, looking to her friend once more with her devious smirk. Her eyes twinkled with mischief, as she eagerly awaited her friends reply.
If they left now, they'd be in the mountains by the heat of the day, where it was cool, and by sun fall they could be back as if nothing happened. Theyd fall asleep with the herd as they usually did, and not a soul would suspect them of a thing.
Perhaps I'll get in trouble for showing her the passage through the mountains..? No I couldn't, she's a member of Olde now, and she was an aspiring healer mage no less.
Agreeing with herself full heartedly, she let one of her ears twitch off to the side, following the sounds of meadowlarks flying out of a patch of grass.

Ganymede hesitated slightly, flicking her tail. Her ears flicked back and she shuffled her front hooves. She could not help but feel uncomfortable at the mischievous expression on Nefertiti's face. "Uh, are we sure that we're going to be able to make it there and back on time?" She questioned, glancing back at the general area that the herd was located. "I think that they will need us before we can return..." She did not quite agree with herself, but she knew that there was no backing out of a plan with her light coated friend.
Well... It is morning. And she would not suggest something that would get us in trouble, right? Ganymede thought to herself, and she looked back over to her friend, perking her ears. She glanced towards the mountains, sighing deeply before nodding. "I suppose if we hurry..." She eventually said, giving Nefertiti a gentle smile.

"Wonderful!" The buckskin mare nearly shouted, quickly stretching back down for another mouthful of grass before turning to trott off. "Lets get moving then, I wanna get there before midday!" Her voice was muffled by the sound of the grass in her mouth, which she had yet to finish chewing. Swallowing it down quickly, she looked back to her friend.
"Shouldn't take too long to get there, and theres still snow on the mountains. That should be a very refreshing place to be when the heat really kicks in." Nef was trying her hardest not to bounce and trot in place as she waited for Ganymede to follow. The wind off the coast blew in the form of a soft breeze today, bringing with it the smell of the morning dew on the grass, filling the air with a fresh feeling. Nef took it as a sign of encouragement from the land, maybe even from the unicorns, that this was a good idea and hoping she was right.

Ganymede flicked her tail and eased into a trot, following her friend. She had to admit, she did miss the snow. She had not seen it in quite some time, and she really enjoyed playing in it. Especially when it was freshly fallen. Then it was fluffy and powdery and much easier to utilize. The chilly crystals always made her giggle when they stuck to the small whiskers on the ends of her nose. "Alright, alright."
The young grulla quickly broke into a lope, glancing back at Nefertiti. "How about a race to get us started?" She taunted, throwing in a small kick for emphasis. There was nothing like a game to make the time go by quicker. Ganymede looked back forward, the Ailin Mountains looming in the distance. She sighed and a small smile grew on her face at the thought of a small journey.
There were so many things to see on the way to the mountains, and the day was still young. Hopefully, if they made good time, they could stop by some of the more prominent landmarks on the Isle. Ganymede really hoped to see the city, but that was high hoping. Typically a city journey was a multiple day trip. She did not have time for that.

"Of course~." Nefertiti giggled softly, smiling slyly at the mare. "If you think you can keep up!" Picking up her front legs in a playful rear before taking off in a full gallop, tearing the earth away underneath her flanks. It felt nice running this fast, at least for the fun of it, especially next to one of her good friends. Feeling the wind rush through her mane and over her coat made her feel alive, and she loved it. Feeling her legs glide over the ground with all of her power pushing herself forward, it felt like she was unstoppable.
Turning to look up at the mountains in the distance as the seemed to grow before their eyes, the soft white clouds dipping over them and into the valley, looking almost transparent as they weren't even fully formed yet. "Cmon Anna!" The silvery mare looked back to her friend, reassuring herself she was still there.

With a laugh, Ganymede bolted alongside her friend, her hooves creating small whirlwinds that blew on the grasses and sent dirt flying from the earth. Morning runs were always pleasant to Ganymede. The cool air filled her lungs with a crisp, cleansing feeling, and provided just the right temperature for physical activity. As her muscles worked, she felt her body stretching out of the sluggishness that came with sleep. Ganymede tossed her mane and let out a playful whinny, glancing over at Nefertiti with a grin. Any moment of rest that the grulla had was cherished. Especially moments like this, where she could just be free to enjoy the company of friends and the welcoming aura of the island.
During her thoughts, she had fallen a bit behind her friend. Quickly breaking into a sprint, she managed to catch up, but not before her friend noticed. Looking up at the mountains, Ganymede could see that they had already covered quite a bit of ground. The weather looked like it was going to be rather pleasant in the mountains, and the grulla mare was thankful for it. Any horrible weather would most likely cause sickness and Ganymede could not afford that. Rain also meant perilous slopes and potential landslides.

Pushing herself up over a boulder, the dainty mare leaped forth, giving a soft whinny as she flew through the air. She enjoyed the idea of flying, and it also gave her legs a temporary rest with a refreshing cool wind rushing under her. Stretching out her legs to brace herself, she landed on the hard ground, stumbling a bit to regain her footing before taking back off at full speed. In her small stunt shed managed to have fallen behind Ganymede a few paces, which was unacceptable in her mind, so she started to push herself harder forward until she caught back up to the mare.
"Didn't think you could beat me that easily, did'ya?" Nef laughed as her hooves thundered along side her friends, tearing at the grass and earth beneath them. They were almost to the mountain pass by now, so there wasn't much more room for goofing off until their little race had to end.
