The dark green grass that blanketed Olde felt slippery under the mare's hooves as she pranced in place. She had been here so many time before she felt that it shouldn't bother her, but still the wet grass felt nothing like the soft tall tendrils of the Bachelor fields. She was always a little homesick when she came this far north, but the excitement of the chat had her heart pumping in excitement. She had not been able to sleep after they arrived on Olde soil - but the long trek had worn some of the others out. She sniffed, wondering if their laying figures had actually gotten any sleep. She hoped they did, they would need their energy for the task ahead.
"Jaxon! Tobias!" She barked at the two stallions, younger than her and smaller in stature, they made her feel powerful. "The sun is rising, and we must be on our way!" The sturdy mare gave little a moment for the two to join her at her side before she began to walk off, deeper into Olde territory. Earlene remembered a time when the open fields scared her - a time when she worried if the prey would see her coming. Her first rolic played warmly in her mind - she needn't worry about the Olde simpletons running to far. She would catch them, no prey would escape this predator.

The cool dew stuck to Jaxon's coat like a wet blanket, chilling his skin as the Northern breeze cut through the field. Ears twitched irritably as he rose his head to Earlene's command, letting his breath smoke in the dawn light. He had not slept that night, his muscles sore from the long trek and his mind awake with anticipation. The mission was to be swift, carried out with precision and tact; neither of which Jaxon had much of. None the less, the idea that he had been chosen to participate excited him sending tingles down to his hooves. That was, until, he learned who his new lead would be.
Overall, the stallion had no real qualms with Earlene herself; and from what he had seen and heard, she was well built, strong, and fearless. What he could not get over was something much simpler (and shallow): Earlene was a mare. That simple fact corrupted all her accomplishments. Even as a golden mare, Jaxon could not think past this one fact. Perhaps...no, for sure, he was being hypocritical. Akira, after all, had proven him wrong time and time again; slowly melting his ever fossilizing heart. But she was separate and untainted by bachelor life, strangely allowing him to overlook the critical fact that he could not here.
Shaking his head of thoughts, the Grande moved forward keeping a measurable distance between him and Barb that stood before him. She seemed eager, ready for action, as she waited for her two underlings. Jaxon allowed his single blue eye to wander toward the smaller form as Tobias moved into position, only now noticing how he towered over them both. He would have a hell of a time sneaking up on any horse if the whole of this island was grassland but that would not stop him from running them down.

The idea of being led by a brood bothered the youngling just as much as it did the other stallion. He had seen Earlene train before, and knew that she was quite good at what she did. But, Golden Mare (a tradition he had always been against) or not, a brood should be with the foals. He had sulked about the fact, stubbornly trailing well behind as Cain had first sent them on their way across the Eastern Island. But as soon as his eyes had spotted the land bridge the appaloosa colt could no longer care about such trivial things as who he had to pander to.
Not quite 17, he was still technically a youngling. They were not allowed to cross land bridges, and they certainly were not sent on any such missions. In many ways this war was the best thing that had happened to Tobias. His eyes had shone gleefully as they scanned the path before them. As soon as his hoof crossed the imaginary line between the shore and the bridge the gravity of the mission had sunk in. Every nerve in his body began to quiver, and had Earlene and Jaxon not crossed ahead of him he would have galloped straight across the bridge, his excitement too hard to contain. As such he had pranced most of the way, neck arched in boyish pride, tail flashing back and forth. He could not have asked to go on a better mission. Certainly, he was quite glad he had not been sent with his mentor, Ghost, to return the Exiles to their land. What a waste of time. But no, he had been chosen for the most important of missions - eliminating the Olde scum.
While still mentally excited, the body can only stay on high alert for so long. When they had reached the Olde Island that night and Earlene had said they would settle down his muscles seemed to suddenly realize the toll all of the quivering had taken on them. Tobias would not have admitted it had the others asked, but it did allow him to sleep well. Blood, flowing freely from the blurred figures of Olde horses, filled his dreams.
Earlene's call woke him easily, and with little hesitation he threw himself to his hooves. He felt completely rested, and with a quick shake of his spotted hide he was ready to go. Trotting to catch up with the others his head twisted this way and that, excitedly taking in all of the new surroundings. The open plains seemed strange compared to the rolling hills of the East Island. He had not considered before the vast difference in landscape that another island might have. It should be easy to see any enemy horses, but a fog had set in that shortened their view drastically. He was not worried, though. He knew they would find them. He knew they would kill them.
To have his first kill... the idea thrilled him. His legs began to skitter again, and his energy couldn't help escaping as words. "Is this island as big as ours? I mean, do you think we'll find some Olde horses by the end of the day?"

Earlene snorted, she had sensed the other two stallion's disapproval as soon as they had started their journey. The way they had wallowed behind her was enough a hint as to that, but she had been used to it for a long time now. Her years spent among stallions were long and repetitive. They never expected from her as much as she offered, and they often turned their noses when she surpassed them. It was simply how things were in the bachelor herd, and she accepted that. Still, Cain's words remedied any doubt she might have had. He had called her a stallion, one of them. She was determined to show him that he was not wrong. She nodded quietly to Jaxon as he came to her side, and waited patiently until Tobias had joined them.
"No" she murmured looking over the horizon. "Its not as big, but still tricky to navigate if you haven't traveled north before" she looked down at Tobias gave him a playful shove with her shoulder. For once she didn't mind having younglings on her team - his evident excitement reminded her of her younger days and the first time she had crossed onto Olde soil. It was nice to see eyes so bright and full of wonder. She would not let the spotted youngling down. The other that came with her however, she felt rather indifferent about. He'd hardly talked to her before and his quiet demeanor made her nervous. She'd rather know what a stallion was thinking.
"Don't fret, we'll find them easily. The Olde horses don't have tall grasses to camouflage in, just forests and trees that are much to far from their borders. I doubt they'd simply hide away after the last battle. They'll be ready for us" She raised her head and her eye brows over the hill they stood on- it was curious just how quiet the land felt. It seemed unnatural compared to her prior advances on the north-most Island.

Jaxon scoffed, watching his hooves as they carefully parted the grass that barely reached his ankles. The land felt rugged and clean beneath him, the cool air fresh like spring water found only near the mountains. He had only been on Olde territory once before, still too young to go on any real missions as of yet but just old enough to accompany the older stallions. It had been his father, that had convinced the others to let him go. He had grown up around them, the senior crowd, having never been aloud out of Birch's sight without proper eyes watching him. Now, with a bachelor herd full of peers, he felt lost; their young and eager minds too much like his own. After a moment he raised his head, allowing his one eye to take in the dawn light as is colored the land with pastel pinks and blues of all shades. Carefully, he allowed his ears to reach out and capture what he could not see: the quiet song of crickets and the morning calls of song birds. There seemed to be no one around as of yet but he knew full well, that could change in a moments notice.
The stallion cast another glance in Earlene's direction, careful to study her form and gait as the trio moved over the plains. He noticed now, he had never really looked at her. Her build was sturdy and her pelt speckled with years of scars covered partially by her thick black mane. She had certainly been through her share of battles, ones he only hopped to see in his lifetime. Perhaps, if he only looked at her face (or not at all) his respect for her would be more obtainable.
"The trees can get thick in some areas, which is good for coverage but bad for running." He could sense Tobias' giddiness and hear his small hooves glide over the grass. He was younger than Jaxon but not by much; but with size difference alone, you would never be able to tell. In many ways the youngling reminded him of himself, an excitement and taste for adventure egging him on with each new step. Even now, his every breath pumped more adrenaline though his veins as his body woke. Wither it be today or tomorrow, there would be blood. This was war after all.

Tobias frowned ever so slightly as Earlene nudged him. No brood should treat even a youngling male as an equal, but he otherwise did not react. The new territory was making him uncharacteristically obedient. Back on the East Island he had no fears. Even the most treacherous locations on the island were home to him. They belonged to him, and he knew his place there. In charge. Untouchable. But here even he had to admit that backup would be helpful if something were to go wrong. He knew that with Earlene's many years of experience she had a lot that she could teach him. Even Jaxon, though barely on the other side of being considered a youngling himself, had some knowledge that Tobias didn't. Learning what they had to offer in this crucial time would help him become the best stallion he could be. So, though his eyes never stopped scanning the horizon, his ears swiveled back and forth to catch every word the others spoke.
He laughed derisively. "Not only do we have better horses, but it sounds like we have better land as well. Dense trees or not." The Bachelor pride that was constantly coursing through him swelled in his chest, comparing his homeland to this dank place.
"It sure seems like they are hiding, though. Haven't seen a single hoof print." Cowards. "We should find one of those forests," he cast a glance at Jaxon. "Maybe they are all huddled in there. And if it makes it hard to run, like you said, then that means they wouldn't be able to get away. Then we could easily take them down!" his voice rose as he spoke, the colt getting increasingly worked up at the idea of finding some of the Olde horses.

Earlene let out a laugh, but expression remained unamused. She was at least content knowing her comrades were ready to get straight to business, and rolled her shoulders with readiness to get out on the cold olde soil and show them exactly what she was made of. She raised her eyebrows at Jaxon's comment. "Do you really think, we'd need to run when we found them?" It was a joke, she hoped he'd take it that way, but there was no telling with the hot headed, taller male.
"You're likely right Tobias" She stamped a foot gently on the ground, "But we aren't going to find them standing here. Come on, boys Lets move!" She said the word boys condesendingly, because to her thats just what they were - young boys who hadn't quite crossed into manhood. Her mission today was not only to prove themselves, but to help them cross that bridge. With that she galloped on ahead of them, surging forward with speed down the hill into the northern territory. The serene quiet of the mountainous land had her on edge, and the sound of her own thundering hooves was enough to fix that. She'd find them soon. They were not going to escape.

A subtle grin crossed Jaxon's face as Earlene attempted a joke; or at least what he hoped was a joke. "Well," He paused for a moment, allowing his lead to finish teasing Tobias. His words were calmer now as he focused on what was ahead of him rather than beside, surveying the ever dimming landscape as the fog began to swallow it up. "As you said, I doubt they will just stand there waiting for us. Running TOWARD them may come of some use." He found his feet moving faster now, as the trio galloped downhill and deeper into the fog. The quiet rhythm of each step was calming in some ways and thrilling in others, his pelt hot with excitement yet cooling by the air that was thick with water. Being unable to see much was nothing new to him; the stallions deformed face quite evident of that. It was more the noise that would begin to crawl its way beneath his hide; filled with unfamiliar sounds of nature and predators that slunk in the shadows. But today, he would be the one doing the hunting.
It took little time to close the gap Earlene had so generously started, Jaxon's long stride quickly filling the hole and matching the mare pace for pace. He considered momentarily moving forward, outpacing her by a few small steps then decided against it. If Cain had put Earlene in charge, no matter how much he disliked it, there must have been good reason. Well, besides the fact that she had spent a good deal longer experiencing the terrain of Olde. With no more than a flick of his tail, Jaxon shortened his gait to match hers. There would be time to ruffle feathers later but enemy territory was not the place.
A single blue eye glance sideways, searching for Tobias' position in the ever narrowing landscape. Trees were becoming more frequent, spotting the open field with shadowy forms in the fog. Hopefully, as the sun rose higher, its rays would dry the air and clear the mist into something more tame and suited for hunting.

The words "boys" slithered through Tobias's mind, the condescending tone not lost on him. For the first time his red eyes left the foggy surroundings to glare up at Earlene. He absolutely hated being put into such a weak category. Yes, he was a youngling, but he was no boy. He had, in his mind, left foalhood the day that he had gained a mentor at the age of 13. But the Golden Mare had already moved on into a gallop, simply leaving him to scowl at her back. "Brood," he grumbled under his breath, before jumping into a higher gear.
Tobias followed after the other two horses, racing to catch up. The quick pace felt good, allowing him to expend his sudden burst of childish anger. Lengthening his stride he caught up with the others after only a few moments. He did not pull up beside them, however, instead falling into a steady rhythm behind them. He watched the pair's matching strides, subconsciously trying to match his own to theirs. Their muscles rippled with each step, and the colt imagined they must make an impressive sight. Any Olde horse that happened to spot their group would surely be intimidated. Pulling his eyes away from the two he looked around as if expecting to find an audience watching them.
All he spotted, however, was an ever increasing number of trees. Were they approaching a forest? Did this mean they would be upon some of their prey soon? He sure hoped so.

Earlene rolled her eyes, she was doing a lot of that lately it seemed, with the two boys in tow it was easy. As she galloped on she began to wonder where the olde horses were - it was unlike them to be in hiding. Would they have already made it back to the city? If so it was pointless to gallop into action. Earlene knew that was at least a five day journey - maybe longer if the weather wasn't on their side. She huffed loudly, was this mission going to be a dud? She sure hoped not, Cain was depending on her to bring the olde fanatics down.
"I heard that" She snapped quietly and Tobias, thought she hadn't a clue what he had said. The tone was enough for her to assume it had been something derogatory. She wished these boys would respect her a little more. Perhaps they would after this was over. She dodged the trees left and right as they made it closer to the center of the territory, they would not reach the silver wood unless they ran through the night - but the dotted trees made her feel as if they would close in on some olde soul sooner or later. This was their home, and even the cowards wouldn't abandon it in the face of war.
"We can hope Jaxon, We can hope" her voice began to sound nervous, and had lost some of the ferocity and confidence she had carried before.

Jaxon lowered his head, dodging the ever enclosing tree limbs as they stretched out to grab his mane. The air was becoming more tense, the trio moving carefully along the tree line as they crept steadily toward the inner thickness of the forest. Earlene seemed more irritated than anything, though she hid her distaste for the situation quite well. Tobias, on the other hand, was an easier book to read. The grande released a soft sigh, turning his focus back to the surrounding land. His hooves crushed the twigs and dead leaves with ease as he passed over but with no resounding crack. The air was too heavy with moisture, seeping into every crevice of the all too quiet landscape. It made the silence between the three more eerie.
Silence. Curiously, the stallion noticed the birds had stopped chirping and the once songful crickets had long since quieted. His brow furrowed, anxiety slowly twisting away in his gut as he stepped cautiously forward. He took it as a warning; someone or something must be close.
All in one moment, Jaxon heard the faint scatter of leaves just beyond their sight; the shadows created by the mist obscuring most of his view. He paused, glancing toward the golden mare to see her reaction. Had she heard it too? The moment was silent, only the breath of their party reaching his ears as he waited, listening for the noise to come again. "It could very well be a mouse..." his words no more than a breath against the mare's ear. "What do you want to do?"

Tobias followed closely behind his partners, eyes and ears constantly turning. His own enthusiasm had yet to be quelled. He was no longer high-stepping, but his inexperience and naivety kept his heart pounding in his throat. Perhaps, had the air been clear and their vision non-impaired, he would have settled some, but the low-hanging clouds gave the land too much of an air of unfamiliarity. He could tell the sun was trying to shine through as it slowly rose above them, but the fog simply made the light dim and cold. The trees that they passed seemed to appear out of nowhere, sentinels peering out of the mist, and as the horses ran past they would disappear just as quickly as they'd come. The land was sinister, and Tobias could only imagine that the worst of horses would want to live here.
Everything seemed blocked out by the fog. Their eyesight was obviously limited. Nothing could be felt underhoof while at this speed. Trying to smell anything was pointless. When the youngling did inhale all he got was a thick aroma of wet grass and dirt. All that was left to the small group was their hearing, which the paint stallion had quickly employed.
Tobias hadn't heard the sound, but stopped immediately as the others did, catching Jaxon's quick whisper. He sure hoped that the paint had truly heard something, because he was beginning to tire of simply wandering the land. He knew it had been unlikely that they'd immediately stumble onto the enemy, but his boyish heart had still hoped it would happen. Could this finally be his chance!? He looked quickly between the two, eyes dilating in anticipation. It was up to Earlene, and he waited on her word, not daring to speak himself.
