Marius, olde, knight The stallion watched as Astra trailed ahead into the mist. Marius's heart dropped at her words, the reality of them being such a small group was settling in as the three of them set off into the unknown. He thought of what they were all thinking, war on Olde Land. He imagined fighting against the bachelors, the thought of herd mates being injured or killed made him shiver. "Don't worry about me." Astra said before she walked away, Marius wanted to believe that he couldn't worry though as he had never faced the bachelors before, he couldn't help but think of the worst outcome. Lukan ordered for Marius to follow and obediently he did, waiting for the leader of the group to disappear into the mist before walking after himself. He kept his neck arched and flicked his tail nervously, watching all around him. "Keep me in sight if you can, but don't forget to watch out for yourself. They might be more likely to go after mares first, but any lone horse is still a target." Marius could only pray that he wouldn't be the target, but the thought of Lukan or Astra being hit first was also hard to swallow. Just ahead of him Marius could see Lukan's brown figure, alert and steadfast as well. He let a distance grow between them, while keeping the stallion in eye's view. As the mist still danced Marius felt alone as he walked along, as if no one else was around. Frightening it was, to be truly alone.
Marius turned his head sideways, squinting through the mist. He caught eye of a creature in the distance and thought for a minute it was one of his herd members. He sniffed the air, the scent of bachelor still strong. Immediately there was a rustle and a chill down his back. Marius halted abruptly, marking his hooves in the dirt. He looked at the figure more closely only to realize he had never laid eyes upon it before. A bachelor. Everything locked up inside of him for a few moments as he stared at it, hoping the horse wouldn't see him. He ran thoughts through his head of attacking, of saving the day, of being a knight. A new found rush of adrenaline ran through him. When he looked forward he tried to see if Lukan would look back to catch his eye, as Marius knew calling out would only alert the bachelors. However when he looked forward the figure of Lukan was gone, or perhaps emerged too much in the mist to be visible. Perhaps Lukan is still ahead, my vision is clouded, that is all. Marius reassured himself, knowing that must be the answer. He turned back to the mysterious figure, wondering if there were more. he stepped forward and raised his head, preparing for a fight. Only he couldn't burst through the woods with all his courage and he waited in the shadows. Let them come to me, but then, what if it's too late? What if they have Astra and Lukan? What if... Pushing those away he kept stepping forward until his pace was a slow trot. An ambush, yes. But I need Lukan and Astra.. his thoughts whirled around more and more and his pace was growing faster by the minute, he would be upon the bachelors at any second. And yet he took a deep breath and pushed forward, this is what he was trained to do.

Astra || Olde Herd || Knight
The scent was getting stronger and stronger, and Astra begun to look around casually, hoping to spot the intruders. The eerie light made everything seem spooky, and she couldn't hear Lukan behind her. Astra wasn't one to loose her temper, but the atmosphere was getting even to her... It made her feel lonely and abandoned again, struggling to find her way back to the herd and failing miserably. She flicked her tail as if mosquitoes were trying to get to her, focusing on her job. She would find those Bachelors, she would... And her fellow knights were with her. She just couldn't see them.
Suddenly, she realized that she wasn't alone.
The shapeless, mist-induced - or so Astra thought - shadows suddenly solidified in the form of horses. Astra pinned her ears back to her skull, stopping moving entirely. She squinted, trying to see if she recognized any of the stallions (or, less likely, mares), but with no luck. She did, however, spot Martius' body as he moved towards them. At first, Astra thought she had missed some silent sign from Lukan and that they were planning on catching them unprepared, but then she also saw Lukan... Not far from her, and she probably was still within earshot. She stared at him, beating one of her hooves repeatedly on the ground, trying to catch his attention, all the while her gaze flicking between Martius, Lukan, and the Bachelor group. At last, she decided she couldn't let him do it on his own.
Shooting Lukan a meaningful glance - she sincerely hoped he could see her - she begun to stalk forward, in a way that it was clear that she was going to close on the intruding horses from the almost opposite side of Martius. If Lukan did the same, they would, perhaps, make a barrier that wouldn't allow the Bachelors to bypass them and reach the main body of the herd. From her valuable position, she thought they didn't notice any of them yet... They didn't act as if they did. (But then again, she had been playing an innocent mare just a while ago...) If Lukan could match his pace with theirs, they'd be able to attack the Bachelors without them realizing it... An ambush, one that wasn't pre-planned, but that might work just fine. She looked around when she assumed the distance between Martius and the Bachelors was the same as hers and the intruders, trying to make sure if Lukan was following them.

Quietly trotting through the mist, Lukan turned one ear back, the other forward, listening for both of his companions. Their hoof beats were soft but discernable. Bird song and the comings and goings of small animals still reached his ears as well as his other senses remained on high alert. The Bachelor scent in his nose was growing stronger, a sudden waft of it on the breeze cutting through the fog and stopping the knight in his tracks for the second time. They were close, much closer than before. Astra was cloaked from view now and when he looked back in worry, Marius was nowhere to be seen either. A few chilled breaths calmed the stallion slightly - he could still hear them. But... What were they doing?
Marius had picked up his pace, arcing around where Lukan stood. In the distance he could just make out the grey shape of the other knight plowing forward through the trees. Blue eyes going wide, Lukan kicked into a run, still following Astra's trail. Had he missed something? Was she hurt? If anything had befallen the mare under his watch... As he neared he began to slow, seeing the mare through the mist, completely unharmed. Her gaze kept turning to him, an intense look upon her face. Following her line of sight, Lukan felt a hot pit begin to grow in his stomach, spotting the shape of an unfamiliar horse. A Bachelor. They needed a plan. Or another plan, their tactics of splitting up having worked out, but in a different manner than he had imagined. Only the other two knights were still moving forward, eyes locked on the intruder.
Making split second decisions was not something Lukan did very much lately, most of his adventuring and spontaneity reserved for time spent with Ziara these days. He didn't like moving forward without a plan, but if they stopped to talk they risked losing sight of the intruder, and worse, letting them roam free about their island. Gritting his teeth the dark stallion followed suit, keeping back just slightly, but moving into position between Astra and Marius, his ears trained on their target.

Brand | Bachelor Stallion | Infantry
The air was still cold, even as the sun crept further up the sky. Brand wasn't used to this new place yet, but it was comforting to know that the sun still rose and the grass still moved in the wind. He walked calmly, ears swiveling to catch every sound. He'd been following the small herd of bachelors who had come here. Their leader, Earlene, seemed determined enough, but he hadn't been so sure about the others. Following their steps, he knew he could keep an eye on them.
At some point he'd passed them, however, and now he roamed ahead, trying to clear their path of any threat. It'd been a pleasant enough walk. He'd nudged aside from branches, but apart from that he'd been able to enjoy the scenery and ponder their situation. A dangerous, violent one, if Earlene's mood were any indication. He could understand the feeling. Some of his friends had gotten hurt too and Brand himself was still smarting from some well-aimed kicks. It would take a while for tempers to settle, if they ever would.
The large stallion glanced over his shoulder, hoping the others were still heading in the same direction. He'd have to wait a bit and let them catch up. He didn't want them to turn in another direction and leave him stranded. Nothing good could come from wandering these lands alone.
It was then the mists ahead parted and a sound caught Brand's ears. He perked, eyes narrowing, as hooves drew his attention. Hooves on soggy soil and no doubt attached to horses. Horses that couldn't be his herdmates. He stared as figures moved out of the fog and towards him. His muscles tensed. If he had to run, he'd better do it soon.
"Oh dear," he muttered, back legs readying to leap away. Suddenly, he heard movement to his side and his head snapped towards it. Had they surrounded him?
He sighed. "This is an unfortunate situation," he spoke. He just hoped the others would find them before the talons of death did.

Tobias | Bachelor | Youngling
Tobias watched Earlene and Jaxon closely, awaiting their orders. But another muffled snap of a twig came through the fog - this time actually reaching the youngling's ears. He head whipped away from his partners, eyes trying in vain to stare through the cloud cover. It was obvious now - it was the sound of hooves shuffling through the grass. His heart began racing, and his breath came quick but quiet. Here it was. They had finally come upon another horse. Their first victim. The colt was blood-thirsty, there was no way around it. Not only did he want the chance to finally prove himself, especially before he was even 17, but he truly felt these horses deserved it. Not just because of the recent battle but because of everything they were. Their lifestyle was so abhorrent to him: Mares allowed as many rights as the stallions. Believing in unicorns. It was all ridiculous, and they deserved to be eradicated. Now was the Bachelors' time to succeed. In the face of the enemy his tension was once again building beyond his control. He glanced quickly back and forth between his current leader and the foliage ahead, before his childish excitement finally won over. He could not wait any longer. He wanted these Olde horses dead at their hooves. All reasoning had left his mind, and he did not even think about the consequences of his following actions. He had no doubt that they would win this fight, and so he did not worry that they might be outnumbered or ambushed. He leaped forward into the fog, and came upon... Another Bachelor? Tobias pulled up short, several lengths behind the dark brown horse. He did not know the stallion's name, but he certainly recognized him from the herd. What was he doing here? There had been another group of Bachelors sent to hunt the land - had he gotten separated from them? No matter what the circumstance this fool was just asking to be killed. He was just about to step forward and address the other Bachelor when more hoof beats were heard. Tobias's ears twisted this way and that, trying to locate them. Unfortunately they were not from Earlene or Jaxon. They were coming from in front of the other stallion... and from the sides. The other horse had been ambushed. Or was he a trap? The colt scoffed when Brand began to speak, feeling that the stallion's words were an understatement in any situation such as this. He tried to back up behind a nearby tree, but was not quick enough before the Olde horses emerged from the fog. They were just barely visible to him, Brand being much closer to them, but Tobias figured that if he could see them they could see him. There was no turning back or time for planning now. This was it. He stopped and straightened. If they could see them they would not see a colt retreating. They would see him proud and ready for battle. His red eyes shined, vindictive. Earlene slowed to a stop as they approached the mystery horse. She felt the nervous spouts of adrenaline urge her heart to beat faster, her lungs to suck in more air. She was not afraid as they came up on the lost looking horse- but felt a wave of relief when the horse came into focus. Brand. She couldn't help but shake her head at the Bachelor. He had meant to be a part of their party - but she had assumed him to be late, or worse a no-show. When the stallion was found ahead of them - she wondered silently how he might have been early. (@brand) Whatever his reasons were - they didn't matter now. She could feel the presence of the other horses around her.
"Quiet" she hushed the boys (@jaxon, @tobias) her ears flicking to and fro as she tried to pinpoint the hoof steps that surrounded them in the foggy morning. She froze. "They're here" She whispered. Their mission was about to fall into action. This was the time for them to show what they were made of - to prove themselves to their leader. They could not let these Olde's escape, Earlene thought - she felt bloodthirsty, ready to enact her vengence.

Brand | Bachelor Stallion | Infantry
Typical, Brand thought. Here he'd been, trailing a mare and some youngsters and he'd been the one to first get caught. His friends would laugh at him if they ever heard the tale. Or maybe they wouldn't, because laughing at the fate of the dead was generally frowned upon. And Brand could definitely die here, if he wasn't very lucky. As mist crept up on him, so did a sense of dread. Olde horses wouldn't take kindly to them invading their land. Just as they had come to exact revenge and punish the herd for their transgressions, so the Olde probably had angry intentions. His back legs trembled with the need to run and re-position.
Behind him he could hear movement and he glanced back nervously. Was this the first to attack him? Would the fight start now? He was big and he was strong, but he wasn't sure he could take on more than one horse.
Luckily, he was faced with the determined face of one of the young stallions he'd been following. He hadn't seen him from up close, so Brand couldn't help but stare when he finally saw him. Many spots adorned a white coat. Fierce eyes peered back at him and he spied long, agile limbs. The big stallion swallowed. There was a definite resemblance, but they couldn't be related. Xin had been too young and had no siblings. But still...
He was torn away from his thoughts when the Olde horses finally came into view. He readied himself, turning so he stood in front of the young stallion and could keep an eye on whoever was approaching from the sides. He would protect this one like he'd once protected another.
"You look strong," he said. "I definitely hope you are. We're going to need strength."
Behind him, the mare finally appeared. He was glad she'd arrived. She was older and had survived harsh surroundings. No doubt she was smart and experienced enough to help them end up the victors.
"We should engage as one," he whispered back. "I will attack the one that appears to be the leader, once it comes to a charge."

Lukan || Olde Herd || Knight
As one by one the intruders appeared, their shapes wispy and ghost like through the fog, Lukan felt his heart begin to race faster. He held fast to his composure, picking up his pace slightly to ensure Astra and Marius would not reach the Bachelors without him. They were outnumbered by one now, he realized with a shock as he drew closer, picking out features of the strange horses. Despite the fact that one was clearly a mare, it did nothing to make him feel more at ease; if they had risked bringing a mare with them, she was obviously there of her own accord. For a moment he had hoped it was Evalynn or Obscura being escorted home, but was sorely disappointed. Most of them were smaller than himself as well, but again that could mean nothing. It took more than brute force to win a fight.
Maybe we can solve this without violence. Lukan hoped, standing up straighter and shaking his mine clear from his eyes, but laying his ears back projecting a dominant attitude, showing he meant business. As they drew ever closer, his heart dropped followed by a fresh wave of anger. Not only were two of the stallions in the group practically children, the dark stallion even recognized one of them. The half scared face of the taller stallion was unmistakable. Seeing Jaxon in the mists before him made the scar across Lukan's neck burn a new at the memory of the battle. Skirting around a tree, Lukan looked to Astra, and then Marius, before taking the last few strides forward, the fog and damp ground nearly silencing the sound of his hooves striking the ground as emerged from the fog, blue eyes narrowed to slits and going cold.
"You're trespassing on our land." He said firmly, forcing his voice to carry as he tried to imagine what Vasska would have done. Whatever faults their kind might have, he knew how to command attention. Looking along the group he locked eyes with each of them, daring them to explain themselves. "I suggest your turn around, go back across the land bridge, and stay there." When his gaze fell upon the young scarred horse, he let the recognition show in his eyes, hoping to startle the other stallion. "Jaxon. I told you what would happen if you threatened my herd again."
With any luck they hadn't noticed his companions yet, but the chances of that were growing slimmer as he spoke. Intimidation seemed the best course of action for the moment.

Jaxon allowed a grin to cross his face as Lukan's dark form emerged from the fog, his voice coated with anger and hesitation. 'I will attack the one that appears to be the leader,' the older Bachelor's words echoed in his ears as they were passed off to Earlene. The grande snorted, 'as if he was the one to make that call'. If anything, Earlene had first shot considering the position Cain gave her for the mission. But with two hot blooded youngsters on her side, all horses were fair game. Tobias was more than ready to take on the first Olde horse he saw and Jaxon only mirrored his enthusiasm as the adrenaline began to pump through his veins.
"I need no permission from you," he spat as the dark knight called his name. His pelt tingled with excitement as the blood pumped through his ears with rhythmic beats. "I am only here to finish what the kings have started. We have unfinished business, you and I!" With the final word, Jaxon lurched forward heading strait for the other's shadow. He could hear the hooves against the damp ground as they moved around the party of bachelors like predators stalking their prey. But they were sorely mistaken if they thought they knew their quarry. It was them that would be hunted today.
With a few short strides, he closed the gap facing a familiar set of eyes as Lukan's form came into view. He would not wait for the others to sit around all day and talk about what they could not see. No, they would get their chance. The many steps that bounced off the trees signaled there were more of these Olde cowards lurking just beyond their view.

Marius, olde, knight He slowed his pace, Lukan's figure coming into view. Across from them there was another patrol of bachelors, faces that were unfamiliar to the stallion. He could hear Lukan defying one of the bachelor herd members, and Marius waited. Words were passed between the two sides, whispers could be heard from the bachelor side. Marius stood frozen, gazing off into the misty unknown where the enemy lay. In front of him he could make out the appearance of a dark coated male, his face scarred across the side with the common marking of the bachelors. Marius pulled back his ears, waiting for a signal from Lukan to move in. "Jaxon. I told you what would happen if you threatened my herd again." The stallion could hear his commander's words echoing throughout the eerie morning air. There was a sudden rush of wind, the sound of hooves, the confusion and heat of a coming battle approaching. Sensing the coming fight Marius took no more commands and glanced off to where Lukan would be standing. "We are olde knights, and we do not back down." he spat under his breath, turning back to the bachelors. Marius took all of his strength and reared into the air, this time not stopping when he charged forward.

Tobias | Bachelor | Youngling
Tobias's apprehension was briefly quelled by the peculiar reaction that Brand gave upon turning to him. It was the look of long-lost familiarity, but why he would give him such a look Tobias didn't know. He frowned at the other, the look deepening into a glare as Brand moved in such a way as to obviously shield him. He needed no protection, and he didn't want anyone, Olde or Bachelor, thinking he did. The dark stallion's encouraging words did little to soothe his temper. He was about to bite back a remark when Earlene came up behind him, effectively quieting him. The target of his anger was changed as Lukan stepped forward. The colt looked the stallion over. He was large with rippling muscles - reminding Tobias largely of his mentor's build. The second Olde stallion that came forward was also fairly large, though a little leaner. Tobias smirked. If they used their bodies as his mentor did then their strength would be their weapon of choice. They would be heavy-hoofed and their momentum would be their power source. Agility and speed would be where the youngling would overcome them. His kicks and bites wouldn't be as powerful, but he had to hope to land more than they did. But this was only two Olde horses. He looked around, wondering how many more might be hiding in the fog. Surely they wouldn't all be so large. Words began to echo through the fog, tossed back and forth between the Olde and Bachelor horses, but the exchange lasted only momentarily when Jaxon surged forward, meeting the brown stallion. The sudden tension and clamor of battle was Tobias' breaking point. He laughed sharply, the smile on his face wild. "Perhaps you should learn your place!" he screamed back at the paint horse, jumping forward at the same time. The paint had aimed himself at Brand, and this was Tobias' point in running to meet him. He would take Brand's challenger from him, showing him that he (Brand) did not need to protect him. It would also give him an enemy to face. The other Olde stallion was busy with Jaxon, and Toby could not yet see any other Olde horses and he certainly wasn't going to stand around waiting for others to appear as everyone else battled around him. He shoved past Brand, closing the gap between them and Marius. He slid to a stop just before ramming into the Olde horse, spinning on his back hooves as he did so and throwing a backwards kick at the paint's shoulders.

Brand | Bachelor Stallion | Infantry
Brand was nervous. He could feel the unease in the air and the frantic, volatile energy the two stallions behind him were exuding. He'd fought his fair share of fights in the past, but they still made him jittery. Not that that was a bad thing. Nerves and the fear that caused them were a healthy thing. Without it he'd have been dead by now. His hesitance had aided him, but it had never strayed towards reluctance. He would fight, if the situation required it, and he'd fight to the bitter end. Even if he preferred not to.
In front of him, a dark chestnut appeared from the mist. His eyes were bright and his stance fierce, but he hadn't yet charged. Brand counted his blessings. This was not their home and they couldn't as easily count on back-up if a fight started. They had no idea how many lingered in the fog, ready to assault them for trespassing. So instead he waited, trying to appear imposing but non-threatening at the same time. He was probably failing. The liver chestnut wanted to remain on the thin line of being docile enough to not spark a fight, but strong enough not to seem an easy target. Either option would result in bloodshed.
"You're trespassing on our land. Jaxon. I told you what would happen if you threatened my herd again."
Oh dear. It appeared they knew one of his young companions. As far as Brand was concerned, this was bad news. Nothing good came of previous acquaintances with opposing factions, especially when it resulted in such a hostile warning. It made Brand want to apologize, but he wasn't sure it was his place. He glanced at the mare behind him, then back to the chestnut. Behind him he could hear both the young stallions pace.
"I need no permission from you! I am only here to finish what the kings have started. We have unfinished business, you and I!"
Brand's ear flattened. Such a reply certainly wasn't the height of diplomacy. It seemed obvious why these two stallions had been chosen. Bloodlust. Certainty of confrontation. And maybe a chance to prove themselves. His three companions were ready for war.
"I'm not sure," he started, but was interrupted by hoofbeats and dust billowing around him. The scarred stallion rushed by him, tail whipping Brand in the face as he did. It was clear who he was aiming for.
"Wait!" he tried weakly, knowing it was in vain. The other stallion had eye for his enemy, nothing more. He'd probably not even heard Brand's call.
As Brand's heart pounded, so did the hooves of a grey stallion opposite them. He reared, impressive frame up in the air before he too took up a charge. The Olde herd wasn't backing down. Green eyes looked at him and Brand's back legs dug in, expecting a collision. This one was coming for him.
Out of habit, he glanced behind him. Xin wasn't here, but the reminder of him calmed him nonetheless. Even if he was met with a filthy glare that stung. Even if, with a scream of defiance, the spotted stallion ran forward as well. Even if his body nudged Brand's none too kindly and he was pushed to the side. Even if he had to watch as the youngster aimed for the one who'd come his way.
"We are stronger as a group!" he called frantically, watching as the two surged forward. They worked as individuals, when they should have formed a solid mass. They had no idea who they were facing, or how many. Brand couldn't leave them to it, though. Not these two, who had inexperience on their side. Not the spotted one, who reminded him of better days. He inhaled sharply, then pushed himself towards them with long strides. His heavy body wasn't fast, but the distance wasn't great and he soon reached the others. He wanted nothing more than to go for the grey stallion, but he knew a leader when he saw one, so he went for the chestnut. With two of them, they might catch him by surprise. Brand readied himself, then tried to grab the other stallion's neck with sharp teeth. This was a fight they needed to win.

Astra || Olde Herd || Knight
Astra's heatbeat was nearly too loud to hear anything else as she charged at the stallion... She had just gotten past the shock. The last few minutes seemed too hazy on her mind.
She remembered watching as the shapes took form and color, and she could count four of them. As far as she could guess, there were just four of them, no other scent from where she was approaching the Bachelor group, from the direction of the landbridge. She could make out the forms of a mare - and she was certain that was a golden mare, even if she did could not make out the scars, after all, which mare would accompany Bachelor stallions into Olde territory? She very much doubted they were returning a lost member to the herd, although she would have been happy to see Evelynn again - and three stallions... She did not like to be in disadvantage. Perhaps the ambush would be what it took to drive them away.
When Lukan took a step forward and addressed the stallion, Jaxon, then Astra got dizzy. Of course it had to be him. Astra stopped dead on her tracks, thinking back to the colt that didn't seem to mind that she was a filly and played with her whenever his father was away. And of course she recognized the mare, Earlene, she had been already a grown up when Astra was born. She hoped she wouldn't recgonize Astra, but Jaxon... That was a lost battle for sure. And... Now she had to fight him.
Her worry about fighting her past herd seemed justified now, especially when it was clear that Lukan had history with him. Astra swallowed, and as Jaxon attacked Lukan, she tried to move, her hooves rooted to the ground. Come on. Get a grip, they need you! Just when the smaller stallion - he seemed to be younger than Astra herself, attacked, she finally broke free of her daze. She couldn't leave Martius to fight with a smaller horse, no, the white stallion with black spots would have a better chance of winning if he attacked a larger target... How did she say it herself? The bigger the attacker, the easier to hit? Yep, she wouldn't let Martius deal with that guy.
So, instead of letting the younger stallion hit Martius, Astra jumped out of the mist around her, aiming to stop him. All doubts about Jaxon abandoned her mind, her training kicking in. She wouldn't bother with where they came from, she'd see that they were sent back to their land, with some bites and scratches as a token of her appreciation of them. She'd never bow to one of them again, right? So, before he (Tobias) took a few steps closer to Martius, Astra had set herself between them, and stared at the stallion, silently challenging him to bypass her.
