"Do not let those barbarians step foot on our sacred ground" Vasska had told him before they parted ways, Caligo with his task ever present in his mind. He would do what his King, a Unicorn among mortals, bade him to do and he would do it well. There was no fear in his heart, no tremble in his hoofstep as he had crossed the landbridge earlier that day. Though he would have to punish himself later for breaking a law, even if he was ordered to do so, he was no stranger in this land. Not now. His olive eyes swept the landscape, green as far as the eye could see. It was a harsh green, not soft like that of the Isle of Olde. It screamed the Bachelor colors, and he wished for nothing but to destroy it. A shiver of anticipation ran up his spine as he fought the urge to dive ahead, to seek out and decimate the land and the heathen rebels that called it their own. The Bachelors' time had come to an end, and he would be the first to usher in the Age of the Unicorns as it appeared in his mind.
Yet he had these two. He cast a glance back at his traveling companions that Vasska had assigned, and his lip curled in disdain. No use in trying to hide his contempt, especially for the brainless stallion that was Arturo. Arturo, who defiled his sister. Arturo, who married the only mare for him, placed in the herd by the Unicorns themselves. Arturo, who couldn't have even kept her from being captured. He bit his tongue to the words that wished to spill forth, and allowed his gaze to stray to the mare that was somehow assigned the task. The one thing the Bachelors had right was that mares had their place in Caligo's head, and here on a covert mission was not one of them. His eyes narrowed on Kalakara's black and white frame, analyzing her. The mare was green, green as the emerald lands that he wished to trample underfoot with the guidance of the Unicorns. No gift, no experience. Nothing. He was a tactician with no muscle, just a clunky knight with a healing Gift, and a mare who didn't know her potential, or if she even had any. It was going to be a long journey.
Though the day was nippy and gusts of wind kept threatening to bowl them over, the river called to his sensibilities. "Climb in, it would be best for our scent and our tracks to end here." He said, plunging into its icy depths. The sun was shining, which was a blessing, but that was it. He shivered, and not from anticipation this time. Oh, this would be an unpleasant affair.

As they had crossed the ice bridge and the riddle mountains, Arturo had settled for staying silent, barely talking at all. He was proud to serve his king, but why did it have to be Caligo. Vasska had assigned him to this more then important task with Kalakara a mare he barely knew. The only healer mage he really was familiar with, was Eden, otherwise his gift had served him well enough, besides that he preferred Eden as healer, as he had earned his trust more then once. Still, Caligo was his captain and it was most honorable to be under his lead, if Arturo wouldn't have so many differences with the older advisor. There had been that most unpleasant encounter when he was tangled with Ancaesi and soon enough the unicorns made her run towards the Bachelors. It had been an most dishonorable thing and he made himself believe that he regretted it deeply, asking the unicorns man ytimes for forgiveness.
His face twitched into a frown as the spotted adviser glanced back to him with his ice cold eyes. He knew that there was distaste coming from him, but Arturo had no clue how much. The unicorns had their reasons to bring him together with Caligo on such a crucial mission. Arturo let his eyes wander over the scenery, the land was beautiful, though contaminated by the blasphemic Bachelor herd, even the thought made his stomach clench and a sour taste came to his throat. Between all the hate for the Bachelors, self loathing thoughts crawled into his mind. He felt responsible for Obscura's capture and it must be another punishment of the unicorns, but why her? She had been blessed by them, being very devot, why did they punish her? The mission was to find where the Bachelors were hiding, but though... he would try to find Obscura too and bring her back!
Unnerved he clenched his jaw, his eyelids nervously twitching. He stepped into the chilling river and only answered Caligos command with a nod. His glance wandered over to Kalakara and again realized how he knew nothing about her, besides being a young healer. He wondered if she was even fit for the task they were assigned to and his distrust in mare's capability's came into action. The cold water pinching his legs like needles, brought his thoughts back and he decided to talk. "Excuse me the question, but where are you planning to go first Caligo? How much do you know about the Bachelor lands? The island is so big and I believe that neither Kalakara nor me know anything about these lands. " He tried his best to sound the question in a submissive manner. He clearly had a lot of respect towards Caligo, but his whole appearance was threatening, muscly knight or not. Caligo had always been on the upper hand and Arturo better treated him with respect as he was the right hand to the king and so way above his own position.

Kalakara's eyes narrowed as she followed the two stallions towards the icy river; she wasn't sure why she was on this mission, nor why she had to be paired with those two. She had nothing against Arturo, though that was probably only because she barely knew him. Given time, the black overo would surely find something to dislike; this trip was not going to be easy, nor would it be fun. Kali was a healer, not a fighter, and she was jittery at the thought of being put into a battle with only two stallions on her team. If they got into trouble, she needed to be able to care for herself; if the healer was hurt, how could they care for themselves? And two stallions? That was not nearly enough to keep her from getting hurt. Not by a long shot.
Not to mention, one of them was a nut. Kali did not have a huge affinity for overly zealous horses, and Caligo was certainly zealous. To the point of being a little crazy; when the spotted stallion's eyes rolled over him, Kali shuddered at the feeling it gave him. There was something in Caligo's eyes that unsettled him, made him feel like he was being watched, judged. By the unicorns, that feeling unsettled Kali. As Caligo ordered them into the water, Kali couldn't help but let out a tiny snort, feeling the icy water lap against his black and white chest. It was cold!
"Arturo has a point," the black overo said, holding his head high in a vain attempt to keep his long, feminine main out of the deep water. "We don't know what we're doing here...crossing the landbridges being illegal and all." Kali had never stepped foot off of the Isle of Olde before; he was a good little law abiding citizen. In some ways. Falling silent, the black horse pinned Caligo with an inquisitive look; what would the spotted stallion do for his team now?

It was clear that not a one of them was happy to be in one another's company, and the cold water was doing nothing to make the situation better. Caligo had hoped in vain that the chill would cause the others to keep their mouths shut, yet he heard their voices grating on him, seeping into his ears though he flicked them back against his poll as tightly as possible. His green eyes cast back behind him, and he simply gave the pair a look. They had been together for a few days now, a few days too long to be tied to these useless lumps of flesh, and to answer their inane questions was not something he deigned worthy of attention right now. Instead he put his head down and continued plowing through the chilly water, along its winding path, until a city started to rise on the horizon.
The stallion heaved himself onto the bank and shook out his spotted coat. "To answer your question - we do know what we're doing here. We are here to stop any idea of incursions into our sacred island, by any means necessary." Means of violence sounded most pleasant, but he could play at reason for a while, if it had to be done. His olive eyes went back to the city, and imagined the rats that he knew infested the place. He imagined the Bachelors crawling around in there, hiding while the rest were gathering forces to march back on Olde. It would only be mares and foals in there, which were the perfect targets for wide-spread terrorism...or at least they would be, if it were any other logical, Unicorn fearing herd. Caligo scoffed with irritation at himself, he should have realized this sooner. However...
"We make for the city. It is the center of our herd on our own island, it only stands to reason that the Bachelors might do the same." Caligo said, more to himself than to the others, and started at a brisk trot. Caligo invited no questions on how he knew of the Bachelor territory so intimately, but the knowledge was there. Like a grassbeast on the scent of a wounded bison calf, Caligo was on a mission for blood.

Arturo didn't think that crossing the landbridge was illegal in this cause, as the king had commanded them to do so, to find the bachelors. Again he decided to keep his mouth shut, like several horses had told him before, that it was better he kept his thoughts to himself before he said something improper. Especially when Caligo casted another icy look at them and a chill went down his spine that made the waters seem warm. Though, that he didn't even grant them an answer made Arturo angry. Caligo was an Andvisor, yes and he was arrogant, but he still needed Arturo and Kalakara, or what had he in mind to do if a Bachelor stallion attacked him once they found them. He needed muscle and he needed the healer.
Wading through the river that sometimes was low as their ankles and sometimes reached over their chest, Arturo had no problem at all to shove his body through the restraining water. When they stepped back on the bank and he listened to Caligo he didn't react at all. He knew what he was doing and what he would do with the Bachelor stallions, the unicorns would lead him to the right decision and hopefully towards Obscura once again.
Knowing nothing of Caligo's cruel intentions of slaughtering the most helpless of the Bachelors, Arturo kept following Caligo in a trot. He didn't seem to answer any of their questions and so Arturo just obeyed. Though he looked at the black and white overo mare, "Kalakara is it right?" and he lowered his voice a bit while they followed their captain. "Should we come to a fight, stay close to me. I should be able to defend the both of us, but I won't be in need of healing, as I have a healing gift myself. Focus on Caligo then if something should happen to him. I don't know what is going to wait for us in that city, but we don't know it and we will be certainly outnumbered." With an serious look he turned away and galloped up next to Caligo. "If you have any strategy for this, you should share it with us now, as I don't intent to step into a group of guards and be ripped in pieces. We surely won't run into there with flags up and trumpets of war calling."

Kali snorted as the cold air hit him, freezing the black overo's bones as he clambered out of the icy stream. Although the day was sunny, he was frigid after the jaunty little dip they'd taken in the water. Not to mention, he felt frozen for reasons not simply because of the weather; something about Caligo's....eagerness...to complete the mission made Kali feel unsettled and just slightly nervous. The black overo was not a fighter; he had chosen healing due to natural ability, a curiosity about the anatomy of his fellow equines, and a lack of desire to maim and kill. He'd seen what these horses could do after the last battle; he didn't like it one bit. Shaking his mane, the black horse brooded silently, following Caligo at a trot.
Kali had no idea what was to come, what Caligo had planned for the mares and foals of the Bachelor herd. If he had, he would have spoken up far more already; he would protest such gruesome tactics. Though....if it came to it....he couldn't say if he would refuse to fight or not. Refusal was not looked highly upon by the Olde herd; the leader was a Unicorn - if you believed in those - walking on earth, and his will was not to be questioned. Vasska's word was law. As cruel as it may be, it was what had to be done, no matter how distasteful.
"Yes, that's right," the stallion said, turning his attention to Arturo, who was laying out battle plans. Kali couldn't help but roll his eyes mentally. Of course, he'd be stuck taking care of Caligo if anything happened. But what if something happened to him? He was not a skilled fighter, not by any means, and with the body of a mare, and a slender one at that, he was at a major disadvantage comparatively. "That makes sense," was all the overo said aloud, in return to Arturo's plans. The stallion was right; they would be outnumbered. And bachelors were known for their ruthless techniques. This would not be easy.

"Quiet!" Caligo snapped under his breath, his head down and his ears perked toward the city, his body having come to an immediate, jarring halt from the trot. He could hear voices quite distinctly now, the laughter of a mare, the yelling of a stallion, but he couldn't make out the words with his two air-headed companions talking about nothing behind him. His pace slowed to a creeping walk, his ears still perked and his eyes straining to try to see what was occurring behind the Fallen City's crumbling walls. The voices quieted now, and he opened his mouth to speak, with the intent to chastise them further, but before he could speak he heard the clear clanging of hooves against metal. Someone in there certainly wanted to be found. "If they are our own mares in the city, do not harm them, though their purity has likely already been tainted." Caligo said, his voice barely above a whisper as his body whipped around to face the others. "Any horse you don't recognize, however, should be incapacitated." And destroyed... He added in his mind, though he figured the others wouldn't like it. Most didn't, not even Vasska. Though he was as religious as the rest, everyone was moderate in their beliefs in comparison to Caligo. "No, they are making enough noise to cover us until we are inside. Let's take advantage."
Once again, Caligo lifted to the brisk trot though his head remained tucked down against his chest, and his hoofsteps were pointedly soft. It was a strange, creeping gait, stealthy but respectably fast. It wasn't long until the city's buildings towered above them, even more worn down than their own back home. With his pace slowed, Caligo narrowly avoided a pile of rat droppings that betrayed that the infestation was still prevalent. Could the bachelor group be making such noise as to deter the rodent predators, Caligo wondered, his ears still pricked for any other noise.

Arturo's ears flinched back and his nostrils wrinkled annoyed, even though he respected the adviser, he was clearly on his own mission, not including his two companions. Arturo didn't liked to be snapped at in such a manner, even though Caligo was an elder and adviser, Arturo thought himself just a fine enough knight, to question Caligo's strategy. His ears peaked, when he heard the voices and clanging, there was certainly a whole group of Bachelors in there and probably mares with a guard. Arturo narrowed his eyes, it was not right to punish the Bachelor's slaves and harming them for being captives and then Caligo mentioned their own mares. Their purity tainted?! Arturo's nightmares clawed back into his mind, helpless Obscura surrounded by a flock of dirty Bachelors. His nostrils flared in anger and he shook his head to get rid of the thoughts, he had to focus and to concentrate and not let his feelings and rage overpower him.
Arturo followed Caligo quickly as they approached the crumbled city, it stank badly of rodents. He wrinkled his nostrils in distaste as he walked around the rat's droppings that where huge. "What animals do live here?" He mumbled to himself and tried to listen to the voices. A squealing suddenly came from their left side and two giant rats jumped forth and chased each other, as the first seemed to hold rotten flesh in her fang. Arturo startled stared at the huge rodents with disbelieve, what have the unicorns created on this isle? With a brief look, he checked on Kalakara, before he listened to the voices and sounds again, his heart pumping loudly in his chest and he had to breath deeply to soothe himself. Another female laughter was to hear, it was not familiar to Arturo's ear, but is sounded carefree. They had to put down the stallions first, mares and foals had to be spared as long as they were no threat to them and Arturo hoped dearly that Obscura was in the building. He moved forward slowly to close the distance between him and Caligo. If he had a plan, he didn't intend to share with them - he had made it pretty clear, though Arturo was too obedient to question him and then suddenly he thought he heard hoof beats. He turned towards Caligo, with a questioning look, his ears tuned towards the sounds. Have they realized they were coming?

Kali's ears went back slightly at the mention of tainted Olde horses; she didn't believe that being kept captive equated becoming a Bachelor, or being brainwashed in their ways. Surely, these mares were simply tired, scared, and pining for home. What about that tainted them so badly? And even then, could they not simply spend some time at the praying pool and fix whatever was the matter? Internally, Kali rolled her eyes at the thought of all the religious hoops the mares would have to jump through. Odd enough within the Olde herd, Kali was not a firm believer in the unicorns; the struggles she dealt with as a child - spending nights listening to Amy and Roy bicker over the son who was taken too young in the name of the 'unicorns' will', the fact that Kali was never meant to be born - had impacted the mare's belief. But the final blow had been when she'd begun to mature. When her mind and body no longer connected. Some days, some hours, the mare felt like everything lined up, and sometimes, feelings of masculinity flooded her brain, and irritation with anything marish overwhelmed her. Not to mention...sneaking around with Odette. A mare. That was a punishable offense, if anyone ever discovered it. But Kali could not control her heart; she truly thought that she loved the red mare. These things, they were what turned her away from the sacred belief in the unicorns. Kali could not, would not, believe in all powerful creatures that would create a being who had to endure such suffering. The pain, confusion and fear? No horse deserved that. If the unicorns were so powerful and benevolent, they would not have allowed Kali to be...this. Whatever this was. So, if they would not do such a thing, then surely they must not be responsible for Kali's twisted, confused self. And if they were not responsible for it....who was? Was anything?
Kali forced her thoughts back to the present; this was no time to be distracted. They were going to 'incapacitate' whatever lay ahead. The thought of what it meant to incapacitate a horse made Kali wonder what on earth went on inside Caligo's brain. But, as a healer, she had an advantage. She knew enough - not all, but enough - about horse anatomy to know what would render a horse unable to fight without killing it. The legs were good. If she could take out a leg, the enemy would not be able to stand and fight. Ears were good; they bled a lot, caused panic. Noses - soft and fleshy, lots of pain receptors. Eyes...no. She would not stoop to trying to blind her enemies; that was too far. With these thoughts in mind, Kali cast a glance at Arturo, noticing the sudden eruption of rats in the grass. Ew. Kali quickened her pace slightly; the sooner they got this over with, the sooner she could leave. Leave this island, leave Caligo's watch, and leave those nasty rats behind.

Caligo couldn't care less about either of the others' emotions on this task - if Vasska would have let him, he would have run the mission alone and surely been fine. The sounds were getting louder and louder, while Caligo began to get quieter, his hoofsteps deliberately soft and his posture set to a predatory creep. The city was closing in around them now, an alien construction in an alien land, certainly in worse repair than Olde's own city. It was clear that the Bachelors had all but abandoned this place to the rats that infested it, yet the voices within beckoned him further. The Unicorns must have influenced him to search this decrepit place, for it was no mere coincidence or dumb luck that there did happen to be horses wandering the abandoned city.
Stepping gingerly over cracked cobblestones, the laughter echoed around them again, and his ears twitched forward. That laugh was so familiar, and somehow it made his blood boil. Whomever's throat produced that laugh would soon have it ripped out by his teeth. The path split, and Caligo stopped for the sounds of the Bachelors had faded. He glanced back as his companions, and looked them in the eye. At once, there was another Caligo beside them in their group, a perfect replica except for his eerie blank eyes. Caligo looked at Arturo then swiftly nodded his head toward the first path, gesturing for the other horse to follow silently, while his double went to Kali's side and started leading the way down the small alley. They were too close for words - neither Caligo or his double would risk their voice, and slid their hooves across the crumbling stones as silently possible. Caligo could nearly smell them now, taste them. Their destruction would be delectable. Word Count:// 299
