[ Aralynne | Healer Mage ] The little mare lowered her head as the small group walked on, quietly moving to walk on Taishen's other side, hiding herself from the view of the critical gazes of the Olde-born horses. ". . . the Exiles are Exiles for a reason. . ." The mare's ears flopped sadly down against her neck, and she turned away to hide her face from the rest. She knew upon coming to this herd that they weren't going to be friendly, but she had never been made to feel so awfully about her origins until now. ". . .we must find them and root them out before they infiltrate us and destroy us from the inside out." At those words a rare emotion swelled in Aralynne's stomach- anger, true anger. Never once had she seen her birth herd try to strike out at Olde, on the contrary, they'd preferred to stay with their own, even taking in those horses that Olde had deemed unworthy and rejected. They'd given a home to the homeless and- her thoughts were cut off as the Queen spoke once again, and her heart was again set to it's fearful hammering. "Ever since we allowed these thieves into our home, the island has become violent. . ." Aralynne's eyes open wider. How could they prove that this was because of the Exiles? "We must drive away the Exiles. . . or our island, or HOME, will be lost to us." Wouldn't much more be lost if they went and challenged these horses? Weren't lives more important that revenge and terrorism? An overwhelming sense of hopelessness washed over her, and had she not sealed her lips, a whine would have escaped them.
If she were a bolder being, she would have shrunk closer to Taishen just to hide herself further from that electrifying teal gaze, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. Hearing all of this now set her into shivers, her anxious fear easily getting the better of her. She'd been this way ever since she had returned from the Eastern Island, but being placed in such a threatening position so quickly after being torn away from her sister was too much for her to handle. Didn't they understand that the Exiles were horses, too? That they wouldn't have one of their dedicated Healers if it weren't for them? But perhaps she, too, was an expendable being. Certainly if she said anything to this effect she would be banished back to them. . . or taken by the Bachelors. But perhaps that was what one of her history deserved. . .
"I disagree," came the voice of Taishen once Bloom had finished speaking. Gratitude, so much gratitude, was now directed towards the tobiano stallion. Though he didn't mean it in her defense, but in defense of the whole of the Exiles, it meant the same to her. It was her heritage, after all. She'd chosen where to come in search of the ability to help and heal, to be given the opportunity to heal herself. . . she would always be loyal to this herd, but a part of her would always belong to the herd that raised her, too. "Their numbers could have given us the edge we needed and we would have won. . ." he had continued. Wait, the unicorns? ". . . perhaps then, they're punishing us for turning away aide they sent to our lands, and delivered it into the hooves of our enemies instead." Aralynne's eyes opened wider, if that was possible, at the challenge this obviously presented to the queen. The dainty mare raised her head to meet Taishen's eyes as he turned to look at her.
"Very, very wrong," she whispered for only him to hear. She may not have the gall to speak up against the queen, but he should at least know that she was not against him in this. The mage looked away to lay an expectant gaze on the Queen, awaiting what she would say next. [ post 2 - 650 words ]

Turning to Freya, Alabaster's deamenor softened a little. "She is my niece." leaning a little closer so as not to disrupt Arabella's much needed moment of happiness next to the Queen, he whispered. "My sister and her husband passed away some years ago, I have been caring for her since." There was no need to go around reminding the filly her parents were dead so he spoke of the details of their relation little.
Then, of course, his time of sensitive confiding in a fellow, not to mention loyal, Olde horse ended in a rather unceremonious way.
"I disagree."
And there he went again, prattling off mutinous nonsense to rattle the nerves and shake the confidence of the horses on this rather important mission. Who did he think he was?
Alabaster had been trying with every bit of his mental being to keep his mouth shut, for he feared he would regret whatever angry, unfiltered words may fall out. His nerves were frayed and he could feel himself leaning precariously over the edge of his self-control. For the sake of his niece's fragile state and his station of an advisor he felt the pressing need to keep a level-head. But between The Queen's imploring gaze and Taishen's persistent stream of rebellious criticism bordering blasphemy, he could keep his peace no longer.
The snowy stallion stopped in his tracks with the rest of the group, some ogling the troublesome mage while others couldn't seem to meet his gaze. Alabaster stood rigid, his head held high and his eyes turned to ice as he stared at the other stallion with a trace of contempt.
"Arabella." He said, though he kept his icy gaze locked upon the mage, "Please, walk to the water's edge, we will join you in a moment." He waited for his niece to comply. She had been through enough as it was and he needn't worry her with further troublesome thoughts. She deserved an untainted childhood as did any other youngling her age.
When the filly was out of earshot, Alabaster's restrained outrage voiced itself in a cool tenor matching his already frigid bearings. "You want the truth Taishen?" he asked before slowly turning his head to look at each of the other equine's, save for the queen, as she needn't convincing. He had helped to settle many a delicate matter in his service as an advisor, but in a time such as this, what with the herds torn amidst war and rekindled ties testing loyalties, this one seemed especially sensitive.
"Those hateful creatures harbor the blood of criminals in their veins and the blackness of sinners in their hearts. The Great Compromiser and Vasska know this to be true. Both of whom, mage, surpass you in rank, wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment. That is why they are our revered leaders, and not you." Alabaster allowed a pause, both for his words to sink in and to grope for any remaining self-control. "But if you are looking for more substantial proof of their vile nature, then here you have it. An Olde mare was recently raped by one of your so called innocent exiles, who in fact had pledged his allegiance to our side. The mare's identity is to remain anonymous, until further notice, as our rulers and myself are currently handling the situation. Furthermore, as I understand it, this exile has yet to be punished by his lawless herd for such an unspeakable crime." His attention had remained frozen on the troublesome stallion whilst he spoke, hoping that the respect demanded of his superior rank and the impact of his words might subdue the rebellious spirit of this unruly horse. Though he and the mare had spoken with Vasska, he was unsure if the king had told Bloom yet. "Know your place, mage, and keep that indulgent tongue of yours in check." He turned away from the dark stallion, facing instead the healer Aralynne who had shown only timid reluctance throughout this heated turn of events. "And you." he chided, with a glance of reproach. "Vasska must have seen a jem amid coal when you plead your case. Have you no loyalty for your gracious King? Speak in defense of the Olde or risk being labeled a spy amid your brethren."
Finished at last with his orderly set of tongue lashings he faced the group as a whole. "Now, I do believe we have a mission to carry out. If we are quite finished addling away our time challenging our betters I suggest we get started."

I turned to face the rest of the group and specifically Bloom shortly after speaking to Taishen. I had observed that our queen had become calmed and settled following my retribution and her irritation with Taishens outburst.
'You speak wisely, Freya. As wise as a mare twice your age' I couldn't help but feel proud, and joyed with hearing this as well as flabbergasted that it came from our Queen. "Thank you your highness... It's an honor hearing that from you let alone anyone else." With a happy heart I bowed my head in reverence and loyalty. With not much time in between I glanced over to Taishen again as he was getting tousled with my speech which was intended to do the opposite not ignite another flame. Then when I thought all was finished he spoke once more 'I must disagree' "Oh dear.." I whispered quietly under my breath. When he had moved his gaze towards me it felt like a thousand daggers were aimed at my heart. As he was once again proving his point I glanced around noting everyone's reaction as well as my own when what he said next would be a new chapter to the war I never knew of.. 'punishing us for turning away aide they sent to our lands and delivering it into the hooves of our enemies instead'... what was this?.. I followed his gaze as it traveled to Aralynne. She looked scared, shamed and unnerved, I looked at Alabaster then back to her but not a few seconds had passed between Taishen and now Alabasters request to his niece.
Though his words were harsher than what I would have said it was the truth that he needed to hear, though his lashing onto Aralynne I didn't agree with " Alabaster.. Maybe a calmer approach to the mare would be more helpful... " I looked her in the eyes and let a friendly smile drift across my maw. " Aralynne, from observing your reactions and your body language through this argument you're holding something in.. I ask that you would share it with us.. And I apologize if anything I said directly ashamed or hurt you " I said in the most convincing and sweetest tone I could. I walked over closer to her and lowered my head just a tad " I would like to befriend you.. Although my words are truth and sometimes hard I am not here to be anyone's enemy or to judge anyone who doesn't rightfully need to be judged as it is not my place."
I returned back to my original position and looked at Taishen "I do not want to be your enemy either Taishen.. None of us should be enemies of anyone other than who wish to bring harm to us and our herd."
Now that the situation settled for the moment I spoke only once more " Alabaster is right we must continue with our job at hand."

If there was one thing she knew for certain in that moment, it was that she was was going to strangle her defender mage until his pretty, blasphemy-spilling lips had turned blue… if the herd at large did not do it first, given his mood for yelling heresy that day.
What was he thinking? Her gaze shifted from cool indifference to creeping horror as he continued to speak, absolutely insistent on pressing the matter. Had she not told him plainly that the topic was closed? Did he not realize that it was for his own benefit that she attempted to silence him? He was going to say something they’d both regret, something she would be unable to save him from.
Close your mouth, you idiotic peacock, she thought frantically, olive eyes darting to Alabaster. As if answering her prayers, the snowy adviser began to speak, artfully slicing a wound into Taishen’s argument.
Bloom wet her lips as Angelia’s… situation, was dragged to the surface. Vasska had attempted to shield her from it, but there were always whispers, murmurs usually delivered by the spotted mouth of an adviser. She should have thought to bring the incident up before now. It was a perfect example of Exile brutality, and while Taishen wasn’t the sort to paint with one brush, she hoped it would keep him quiet until the mission was done. It was that one tidbit that might be her saving grace: the Exiles have not made him pay for his crime.
And then the focus shifted, zeroing in on the healer mage among them. Bloom’s gaze snapped to Aralynne, and it was there that she saw opportunity to not only save the pretty mare from scrutiny, but to secure her voice in favor of the herd. “Aralynne has sworn fealty to our King.” She acknowledged, voice steady and soft. “She is an esteemed healer mage who loves this herd as much as we; I have seen this in her actions. She would do nothing that compromised the herd, nor would she ever question the will of the unicorns or my beloved husband.”
There. The speech delivered Aralynne from suspicion, but it would also damn here if she spoke in Taishen’s defense. With luck, that would stay her tongue… and with more luck yet, Taishen was also sufficiently shut down. Perhaps, at last, they could move on.

There might have been a chance, a flickering glimmer wafting delicately on the elusive breeze of possibility, that given his word's cold reception, Tai might have bowed his head and stopped talking. He was, in general, an upstanding defender mage. Not the best the herd had ever seen, or at least not yet, but he did his duty, and he did it with pride. It went against everything he'd been raised with, to continue an argument with a superior.
But then Alabaster had snapped at Aralynne.
Ah yes, there it went, that chance of quiet, drifting away on the frigid breeze of Alabaster's reprimand. Perhaps if he'd been less irate, Tai would have bid it farewell as it blew away. Instead, however, his dark ears were flattened against his neck.
In another circumstance, almost any other, the disapproval of his herd and most importantly his Queen would have been enough to still Tai's tongue, or even keep it from wagging in the first place. But this, this from Alabaster... it was too much. Bad enough that the Adviser had made the mistake of including Aralynne in his wrath- it had to be Alabaster. Although none of Taishen's personal experiences with the stallion had been particularly negative, aside from him being an uptight and pompous windbag, Tai had discovered that Alabaster, on more than one occasion, had voiced his disapproval to Eden, over the healer's less than conventional situation. Eden had played it off casually, as he often did, with a derogatory comment and rude noise, but Tai knew his brother very well, and he could see how deep the barbs had hooked in to the healer's delicate psyche.
Thus it was to undoubtedly the present assembled group's dismay that, as Alabaster finished speaking and Freya murmured her own words, Taishen did not bow his head in submission to his betters but instead tossed his head fiercely, physically stepping forward and deliberately placing himself in front of Aralynne, who had wilted further and further.
If there was one way to ruffle the mage's feathers, it was to go after his friends, and at the moment he was angry enough that not even Bloom's placating, soft words were enough to quell the peacock.
"How dare you malign her," Tai said in a low voice, ignoring the undoubtedly scandalized Freya and Bloom. "You speak to me of questioning my betters? Well then, I ask, how do you question our monarch's decisions by demanding such things of Aralynne? They have deemed her worthy, elevated her to her esteemed rank- do you deign to question their judgement?" Brown eyes flashed with the challenge as Tai glared at the handsome, snowy stallion. It had been many, many years since he'd been driven to such insubordination, but something about this day, this group, this mission, had set his every nerve on edge.
"And how dare we presume to judge an entire herd based off of one individual's actions," he continued heatedly. "How would we feel if our entire herd's reputation was built on the misdeed of one member? Or of our distant past? The Exiles and Bachelors came from us." He snorted, aware he was on dangerous ground but also that he was speaking the truth. And of course, it was his duty to speak the truth. Right?
He looked at the group, and angry as he was as he stood protectively in front of Aralynne, it hurt him, beneath the posturing, to receive such cold, unsympathetic looks in return. Was he truly the only one who found fault with the idea of attacking another herd, just for having unfortunate ancestors and for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? It stank, and almost as much as the realization that his beloved herd could be so naive, so blind in their acceptance of the world around them.
ooc: I suppose this makes Tai the "volunteer" mentioned in our checkpoint! Sorry if his tongue-wagging his holding up the plot too much, I hope you guys aren't getting tired of reading his ranting!

FOR THE LOVE OF- UUUUGhhhhhhh Alabaster was more than a little frayed around the edges. He wasn't sure he could take much more of this preposterous arguing or he would faint from the indecency of it all! Never in his life had he met someone as unconventional, disrespectful, and all out irritating as this stallion. He wished Angelia were here. She would have set everyone in order before Alabaster could say 'inconceivable'. The snowy Arabian's ears flattened against his skull, his eyes rolled up in rage and he lurched forward, his fore hoofs knocking up a spray of sand as he landed, nose to nose, with the unruly mage. "How dare you!?" Alabaster hissed through clenched teeth. "HOW DARE YOU!" He snarled again, his eyes afire with hate. "Accuse ME of questioning our king after all you have said." His voice was louder than he would have liked, more vicious, but he was throwing caution to the wind at this point. He'd had enough messing around. Quickly, he cast a warning glance at Freya, daring her to speak up. He was sick of all her hippie peace and free love nonsense. Friends? PAHHH. Sure, they should all just abandon their mission to preserve their herd's existence and the safety of their families and go chase butterflies with the exiles and chat about the weather. A likely story. He'd been counting on her to back him up a help settled the matter at hand (hoof?), but she'd said he was being too harsh. In his opinion, he wasn't being harsh enough. It had become obvious that the mage wasn't about to back down at a few whispered words of friendship. And Bloom? He couldn't say he was disappointed with the Queen, she'd certainly made some good points that would have silenced him if he'd been in the mages place, but again, she just wasn't being firm enough. With this stallion, force was the only way to silence his ridiculous ridiculing, or so Alabaster thought. "It is one thing to offer a helpful comment here and there, but your ranting is completely inappropriate, especially for one of your rank and, to make matters worse, while under orders from the King. If I hear so much as a cough, a sigh, a peep...even a teeny tiny little squeak...come out of that uncensored flapping yapper of yours before our mission is complete I will personally bind your legs together with dark forest vines, anchor you with a boulder, and SHOVE YOUR SORRY BUTT OVER THE LANDBRIDGE!" He roared, his shoulders shaking with fury. He loved the elegance and beauty his breed was renowned for, but now was one of the rare occasions he wished he'd been born a draft so as to better carry out his threat. "And if I have to, so help me, should you cause me or anyone else on this mission even the faintest bit of resistance I will report to Vasska and vie for stripping you of your rank!" Alabaster thundered, narrowing his dark brown eyes to stare head-long into the mage's face. Then, too quiet for the others to hear, he hissed, "You and your sister both." But he wasn't finished there. The dark stallion was a hand higher, not enough to be imposing, but enough so that Alabaster had to angle his head ever so slightly to get a clear view. To further emphasize his point, the pale equine reeled at his disdainful companion again, a foreleg raised, and thwacked the impudent horse against the chest. Surely, the mage wouldn't dare strike back at an advisor. His contempt of the stallion had quickly grown into a furious hate. He probably wasn't actually questioning the meaning of their mission at all. He was only raising a fuss because he was an attention seeker. Yes, that was probably it! What a self-centered, ill-raised, knave! (like nobody else we know) His sister, Eden, was the same way. Prancing amuck and calling herself a boy. Back in Alabaster's day, stallions were stallions and mares were mares. Not that there was much of an age difference between them or anything. He hadn't a clue how two such vagabonds had abounded from such an esteemed couple as Meredith and Anders, but sometimes, well, the unspeakable happened. That spotted mare was nothing but trouble and now her brother, it seemed, was following in her hoof steps. Between the two of them, they would undoubtedly soil the holy herd of Olde.
(Ouch. Alabaster's such a buttface sorry x'D)

The Queen could do little more than watch as the situation escalated, tensions brought to a boil, spilling over, scalding their hearts. How had things gotten out of hoof so very quickly? She'd hoped that between Alabaster's scolding and her own voice raising to Aralynne's defense, Taishen would have been both humbled into silence. Even satisfied, perhaps, given that the healer mage would be under no further scrutiny. But no, she thought, eyes pricking with frustrated tears, he had to keep pushing. Bloom could have strangled him, had she the hands to do it. She opened her mouth to tell him that he was to be quiet in no uncertain terms...
... and then Alabaster was doing it for her, screaming in his face. Bloom's ears pinned to her neck, head arching back in shock. She had not known Alabaster to be capable of such a brutal upbraiding. And to hit him! That would not do at all. "No one is throwing anyone off the landbridge," She said, her voice holding the hint of a furious little tremble. "But I do beseech you to close your mouth, Taishen. You are treading on dangerous territory... you know this! Think about what you're saying... think hard before you say anything else."
Please, her eyes said. Please think, don't--

Taishen had started this day, rising in the cold blackness of pre-dawn, with a twisting unease in his gut. Nothing had sat right with him about this mission- including the fact that he was questioning it at all. A real brain-wrinkler, that. And as the mission had progressed, and events had unfolded... As he'd back-talked an adviser...the twisting unease had spiked and turned in to a cold, heavy weight in dropping in to his stomach. As Alabaster leapt at him, a torrent of furious words gushing from his mouth, Tai thought, for the first time, of just how serious this situation might be.
What was he doing? This wasn't one of his lively, intellectual and private conversations with the Queen- this was a public, official mission in which he was an ambassador and defender mage of Olde. First and foremost. And he loved it. He loved his noble, prestigious herd, and he loved being a defender mage, an elevated, esteemed member charged with his herd's protection.
... just his herd's protection, though? Not all horses who needed it? And was he to protect not only the physical bodies that made up his herd... or it's reputation too? Was his own comfort and status more important to him than speaking the truth?
As Alabaster shouted at him, the weight grew heavier and heavier, colder and colder. Not only under the weight of his superior's furious words and disapproval- but also under the added weight of shame. Not shame for having spoken up and having caused this mess, but for giving up, when his own status was threatened.
Thus as Alabaster leaned in to drive his point home, Tai broke eye-contact, looking down as his proud ears wilted.
"You and your sister both."
Although he was already standing still, every muscle locked in to rigidity as shock roared through the stallion, and brown eyes widened.
you
and
your
sister
An odd ringing seemed to fill Tai's ears as he stood frozen in the sand, the breeze running playfully through his sheared mane.
He remained still even as the snowy advisor reared above him and struck him. Tai must have stumbled, at least a little, but if so he was unaware as his ears continued to ring, a sort of pressure building up, obliterating any external sounds- Alabaster's harsh breathing, Bloom's sharp words, everything was muted before it reached his ears, sucked away in to an unstoppable, roiling crescendo of white-edged pressure that seethed and pressed at his ribcage, thrummed through his veins, and sent tremors of power running visibly through his frame as he stood facing the group.
"How," Tai whispered, a choked, strangled sound that scraped out of his throat, eyes still staring blankly down at the sand, half-hidden by his waving forelock as he trembled, "how-"
Out behind the stallion, past the sloping sandy shore, the water on either side of him began to tremble and ripple.
He was long past struggling to keep his words in check, or wrestling with such trivial concerns such as what was "right or wrong", or his "duty". No, all of Taishen's attention was directed inward as he fought to stem that rising, blooming wave of power that clawed at him, but it was leaking, the dam was breaking- he was losing-
The water trembled harder, droplets leaping in to the air before falling back to the volatile surface-
your sister
Taishen slowly raised his head, and the wind swept his forelock away from his white-rimmed mahogany gaze. And mirroring the stallion's upward lift of his head, from out behind him, the sea suddenly erupted in a mighty splash as twin balls of water shot in to the air.
He took a step towards Alabaster, and the balls of water, jerky and trembling in time to his fluttering heartbeats, surged forwards, until they reached the mage, and hovered threateningly on either side of him, spinning slow rotations above the earth.
Taishen tried one last time, one last effort at pulling his mind away, separating it from this terrifying, intoxicating power that flooded his senses, that was edging towards violence, but those words, those words, they kept ringing in his head, reverberating in his skull and the pressure built with it, it was too much, too much-
YOUR SISTER
Tai had stared at Alabaster with eyes that didn't see; suddenly, they did as pupils contracted to the pinpricks. There was one moment, one heartbeat of trembling, echoing silence.
The wave broke.
"HOW DARE YOU!"
With a ripping scream of fury that rent the still morning air, Taishen launched himself forwards, his powerful hindquarters coiling and propelling himself in a spray of sand. Mirroring his scream, the rotating balls of water flattened and lengthened in to aerodynamic points and shot straight at Alabaster, shining silver arrows of pure, unadulterated fury.

I stood there in awed silence of what the last few minutes have brought on, The tension between Alabaster and Taishen was sparking and I was not about to step into the water and touch the bolt of electric energy that had formed a noose around the two horses throats.
"This is not going to go well... "
I let my eyes drift to Bloom and with a pleading gesture asking what to do I backed up and then it happened.. that noose tightened and Alabaster launched towards Taishen yelling and teaching the grown stallion a lesson in speaking out of rule and against our king.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse Alabaster rose and struck Taishen I flattened my ears and held my tongue until that moment when Taishens dam broke and water went crashing down on the mission he then started charging Alabaster and that's when I knew it was time to let go of my tongue, I jumped between the two and snapped "ENOUGH OF THIS YOU TWO."
I snorted then shifting my direction looking at one then the other.

(I'm sorry for any weird spelling errors, I'm on my cell, but I will go back and fix them later!!)
There was little time for the still magically giftless Alabaster to mull over a new plan of action. So maybe fighting fire with fire, or in this case water, was not the proper way to handle things. Even after belting out all his anger on the mage, he didn't feel any better, only angrier. The fact that the dark stallion was now coming at him with massive water funnels and a murderous look in his eyes didn't much help to settle his nerves. He'd hardly had time to run a few choice curses through his mind before the next couple of events unfolded within seconds. The mare, Freya, leaped between them, which was an awful mistake, as Taishen wouldn't have had time to pull back at the rate he was going. Magical water came crashing down upon not only Alabaster, but her as well. The white stallion felt his legs ripped from beneath him and tumbled across the slick, wet sand by the water's force, his mouth and eyes clogged with grit in the painful process. He spat out a mouthful of salty water and sand, gasping and chocking for air. He was blinded by the sand in his eyes and began to panic. Was Arabella still safely away from the group, or would Taishen make the tide sweep in and whisk her away? He wasn't sure what had happened to Freya either. That aweful mage! If earlier events hadn't been enough to get him in trouble, attacking an advisor surely would. He suppressed an excited smirk. With any luck the mage's sister would side with her brother, thus condeming herself to Taishen's wrongdoings as well and perhaps the herd could rid itself of those two fiends! "Tr-traitor...!" Alabaster managed to choke out. "To your...king...to your...herd...to your...home...!" he hissed between ragged gulps of air, sea water still evacuting his lungs, but he presed on, more determined than ever before, "You...Taishen...have betrayed us all." He had questioned the king and all the Olde herd stood for time and again, then had the nerve to physically attack an equine who ranked only below the monarchs and carried royal esque blood. If this didn't get him banished, what possibly could. Alabaster, getting shakily to his hooves, turned his watery, sand filled eyes toward the Queen, awaiting her sentence. "My Queen, what do you command be done with this...treasanous...wretch?" He asked, gaining his voice back.

As it turned out, Taishen came perilously close to his own tumble into the sand, and only his life-long study of increased agility allowed the careening stallion to keep his hooves, albeit however ungracefully.
He hadn't expected his water missiles to be so effective; in truth, he hadn't thought of them at all, or what they were doing. He'd been barely aware of the water that mirrored his raging mood, only of the rising wave of power. And so as he leapt towards Alabaster with intent to hit and hit hard, Tai had not expected the water orbs to streak ahead of him, and do his work before he'd gotten there himself. He'd always been the "get in and get his hooves dirty" type, as an ungifted rook and mage. And until this moment, he’d had few opportunities to explore the limits of his fledgling gift. It was going to take some amount of re-learning how to handle himself, to accommodate this new power. If his herdmates didn’t kill him first.
Thus it was with a fair amount of shock that Tai watched, in a sort of surreal slow-motion, the twin arrows of water fly past him and collide with Alabaster and, regrettably, Freya. Thoroughly disconcerted, Tai’s concentration broke and he slid and scrambled and generally made a spectacle of himself.
Regaining his balance, Taishen took a dazed moment to stand still, sides heaving. With the break in concentration, the water that had attacked Alabaster had dropped to the sand, lifeless, seeping away. Tai was still rattled, still confused. Had he done that? And to have accidentally included Freya in his cross-fire-
Then his attention snapped to Alabaster as the pompous ivory windbag (admittedly with fabulous hair) began to stir and growl, heaving himself to his hooves and uttering threats.
Rage flared again, and Tai felt that power as it blossomed once more in his chest, running through his veins and setting every sense alight. He would have his satisfaction of Alabaster; the power demanded it.
Beneath Alabaster and Freya’s hooves, the damp sand began to bubble, as Tai took a step forward, and the water began to shape towards a purpose, just as the rage building in the mage’s chest likewise bloomed.
“The only traitor here is you,” he snarled, ears flattened as muscles tensed, and as the thrum of power rose in his ears and his very blood sang with the need for release, so did his voice rise. “How DARE you drag him in to this,” Tai shouted, another trembling stride taking him closer to the adviser. “If you ever, if you ever, threaten my brother in my presence again, I’ll, I’ll-” the stallion was shaking with the effort to keep his head, to keep the power in check, and he fairly choked on his suppressed rage.

Things were getting wildly out of hoof. There was but one thing to do, and one thing only. With a snort on her lips, the Queen lurched forward to clamp her teeth on one of Taishen's pristine chestnut ears. While it might have been more effective to grab him by the mane, given his preoccupation with it, her goal was to calm him down - not give the peacock more reason to drown his herdmates. With her teeth biting down just hard enough to really smart, the dainty mare pulled, trusting that the idiot would follow the source of pain and swivel his great, pretentious ass around to face her rather than the adviser he was so intent on assaulting. For while it was true Alabaster had struck first, Taishen was- and knew he was- larger and stronger, capable of really hurting the Arabian if he lost his head, which, as this entire venture proved, was something he indulged in often.
"What," She snapped upon letting go of his ear, "are you doing?"
The wind picked up, sea spray dappling their coats. Her crown of petals and briars came just a hair askew, just enough for her eyes to flicker, a pale blue dancing across forest green - not unlike a shaft of light in oblivion. Come and gone, it could have been no more than a trick of light. The queen pressed in, nearly nose-to-nose with the mage, starlight hair whipping at her cheeks. "How dare you lay a hoof on your own herdmates. You should be ashamed of yourself. You are a defender mage! Is this how one of your esteemed rank should conduct himself? You great fool, you have not trained all your life only to be susceptible to your own temper. Your actions dishonor your herd, dishonor the king, dishonor me... but most of all, you bring shame upon yourself."
Her ears had flattened to her neck as she spoke, her green eyes leveling him with all the disappointment that curled in her heart. "You are better than this."
The mare turned on her slender legs, tail slithering through the sand behind her. She went to Freya, and touched the pied knight's shoulder, urging her to rise. She appreciated what Freya had tried to do, throwing herself between the pair as she had. Even though it had only managed to cool their tempers for but a moment, it had given her the opportunity she needed to lurch in and yank Taishen away from further escalation. "Thank you, and I hope you are not hurt," She breathed.
The Queen turned to Alabaster, "Adviser. I hope you are alright." She told him, bowing her head as low as she dared. Her crown's placement was still terribly precarious, after all. "I will see to it that Taishen is punished accordingly..." Her eyes narrowed then, her lips tugged into a frown. Though she hadn't heard Alabaster's original threat personally, Taishen's following outburst had made the source of his rage crystal clear, "But know that I will not tolerate you threatening a herd member anymore than I will tolerate it from anyone else. I wonder how you would react, were sweet Arabella dragged into this.
"But it was you who threw the first kick. I expect better of my Advisers than that. I understand your nerves are frayed with the recent... circumstances, but it does not make you blameless." With that, she turned away, and cast her gaze across the pink sea, towards the mountains beyond. The sun was well and truly above the horizon now, the sunrise a little less magnificent as it faded to blue.
"... We are turning back." She sighed. Vasska would be displeased, but how could she continue when her people were so fractured, so emotionally compromised? Alabaster was out for blood, Taishen was bordering on a call for banishment... poor, sweet Aralynne, her heart was surely breaking over the prospect of driving away the very horses that had raised her. Bloom swallowed, and tried not to think about the pain she'd caused the little mare. She didn't have time for attachment, or pity, or even her own conscience. "I cannot trust that this mission will bear fruit when the participants are so divided, nor will I force you go against your hearts. The Unicorns will judge the sympathizers among us... it is not my place to do so."
The Queen turned north, intent of returning home. "Arabella," She called, "come walk with me, little dove, we're turning back."
