Roleplay between myself and Lalaith86
Cadena: The brown mare's sides heaved as she scrambled between two small streams, trying to avoid splashing through the water. This was yet another of her favorite training techniques: running an obstacle course through the Shatter Lands, avoiding small creatures and treacherous ground alike. As she reached the end of the strip of land she was galloping across, Cadena launched herself, aiming for one of the inlets nearby. She barely made it, landing with an oomph and clawing her way onto dry land, shaking her mane for a moment before she continued on with her training. Now, with her daily exercise out of the way, she went on to the more magical side of training. As of yet, the flaxen chestnut had not developed her gift, and she was anxious to have it unveiled to her. As almost all Defender mages had elemental magic, she honed her skills near whatever elements she could find, hoping something would spark a reaction within her. With this in mind, the dark mare waded chest deep into the water near the cost, the wetness turning her coat black as tar where it touched her. Stretching out her neck, she kicked her legs and began swimming in small circles, hoping to feel some connection to the water. When, after maybe ten minutes of this went past, nothing happened, the mare sighed in irritation and clambered out of the water, shaking herself off. Well, on to the next exercise then.

Tem really had no interest in wandering through soggy grass, flicking mosquito after mosquito off his hide with well-aimed swipes, but somehow the tiny stallion had found himself lost in the Shatter Lands. He knew where he was, roughly, but how to get back out without ambling into the water, he wasn't quite sure. He eyed his surroundings carefully, hoping to recognize something that would lead him back to the rest of the herd. If he got lost any further, he'd be in real trouble, as not that many horses made it this far east on their island.
"Idiot," he muttered to himself, deciding on a path and trudging along, his short legs threatening to sink in the muddy ground. At least he wasn't very heavy.
He soon found some solid ground and, congratulating himself for that small achievement at least, he grinned and looked ahead. What he saw startled him. A mare, hide dark and half submerged in the water, swam circles in a lake not far from him. Tem's ears flattened and he sped towards the lake at great speed. Was this mare injured? Had she lost her bearings? How was he ever going to get her out of the water, considering she was bigger than he was? He wasn't sure, but he rushed forward anyway on quick hooves.
"Hold on!" he called, "I'll save you!"
He skidded to a halt at the edge of the water, breath pushing out of him in great, heaving breaths, as he stared up at the mare who had already gotten out of the water.
"Oh." Tem blinked. "Or, ehm, maybe not? Which is probably for the best, 'cause I would have only embarrassed myself trying to somehow carry you out. I'm tiny, you see."
A blush stained his cheeks as he looked around, hoping no one else was near. Why was it that he always managed to mess up somehow?
"What...what are you doing all the way out here?" he asked, tail moving about idly as he stood. Those darned mosquitoes would be the death of him.

Someone yelling caught Cadena's attention as she slogged out of the pond, her dark coat dripping water onto the grassy earth. As Tem skidded to a halt beside her, she raised a brow incredulously, watching the small stallion flail to avoid the mud. "I can see that," she said, shaking herself and flicking water in all directions, leaving her coat fluffed and sticking up in places. With her coat somewhat in order, Cadena swished her tail, anxious to get on to the next activity on her list. But first she must interact with this strange little stallion, who had, albeit uselessly, come to her aid when he thought she was in danger. "Although the gesture is appreciated," the defender mage added, to let the little horse know that he'd done all right. "Me? I'm out here because I have training to do," she said, beginning to jog towards a pile of rocks and earth that she'd made nearby. "And I'm already running late," she said, beginning to paw at the dirt, trying to make something shift...possibly telekineticly.

Mud rained down all around him as Tem glanced up at the chestnut mare. He'd seen her before, like he had many of his herdmates, but they'd barely spoken, so he wasn't sure what he should do to get in her good graces. Cadena was impressive, with her strong muscles and stronger convictions, so he feared angering her and somehow breaking a limb. It wouldn't be the first time that that nearly happened.
"Training?" he asked, puzzled. "All the way out here?"
The area didn't look like much. He couldn't imagine finding anything here that would help with whatever training she'd gotten herself addicted to. He just saw water, grass, and the occasional mole hill.
"Are you hunting rabbits?" he asked, tone joking and ears swiveling. He knew some of those were near, if she wanted to chase.
"I always chased those when I was a foal. I never caught them, but it sure was fun!"
He watched idly as she clawed at the ground. Was she nervous? Horses tended to do that if they got nervous, but this mare didn't seem like someone who got nervous fast. And why would she get nervous about Tem's arrival? Maybe she felt murderous and she was trying to distract herself from killing him in a blind rage? Tem swallowed, suddenly nervous himself.
"You're late, you say? You have a meeting somewhere? Please tell me it's with the herd. I managed to get lost somehow and I just know something will show up to gobble me up. I'm like a light snack to them."
Tem pouted.

Cadena wondered briefly if there were something wrong with the little stallion, but she shrugged this thought off as she began digging in the earth again, throwing up small puffs of dust that coated her legs, completely obscuring the tan color of her coronet bands. "No, not a meeting," she said, trying to make her voice seem friendly, even if his questions were getting on her nerves. Cadena did have a soft spot for younger horses though, so it wasn't quite as grating to be around him as it could have been. "I have to keep on my schedule," she grunted, abandoning her task with a huff; telekinesis and earth magic weren't going to appear to her today. "And yes, I'm training, but no, I am not hunting rabbits," she added, realizing she had neglected to answer his questions from before. "I am," she said, digging up a particular gray stone, for all intents and purposes perfectly normal, and setting it atop another rock, flatter and bigger than the small stone, like it were special. "Trying to discover my gift," she added, suddenly striking her forehoof against the stone with considerable force. A shower of sparks fluttered up from it, for it was not an ordinary gray stone, but a shard of flint. The rock beneath it produced the sparks when it was struck. Satisfied that the flint would work, Cadena trotted over to the dirt hill and gathered a mouthful of dry grass, placing it on the large stone next to the flint. Then, she waddled back over to the dirt pile and picked a mouthful of fresh grass, laying it out to dry for the next time she needed tinder. Once back at the rock again, she struck at the stone two, three, four times, until a rogue spark landed on the grass, igniting it. With soft breath huffed through her nose, Cadena managed to coax the fire into existence. For a moment, she watched it in silence, the flames reflected in her pale blue eyes. Nothing. No connection to the flame existed. Fire magic was out. Sighing, the mare turned and flopped her soaking wet tail over the mess, smothering the fire and effectively putting it out with no more damage than a few lightly warmed tail hairs. Now, she could turn her attention back to the stallion. "By the way," she said, her ringed blue eyes staring down at him. "Nothing in the Shatter Lands is going to eat you. And the herd will be around the city praying, or in the grassy lands between here and anywhere else on the island. The only thing you need worry about is the Forbidden Forest...but since it's well, forbidden, you shouldn't be going there anyway." She paused for a moment, then spoke again. "But, if you really want, you can stay with me...just don't get in my way."
(By the way, I've had a family issue come up, and I will be out of town for a few days. I should be back around Wednesday/Thursday)

"Are you looking for something?" Tem asked as he watched the mare paw at the earth. Some of the dust had drifted upwards and now clung to her wet limbs, changing their colour like the sun brightened everyone's coat when it hit.
And, wow, she had a schedule. A schedule she stuck to and upheld, looking at how fit she looked. Tem was impressed. And somewhat frightened. He'd never met horses so focused on that kind of thing and he certainly wasn't one to plan out his entire day. It was why he was here and not practicing his healing magic on some poor soul with a mosquito bite.
"A schedule? That sounds...constricting. I don't think I could do it. But then, can you imagine me doing what you just did? I'd drown!"
He watched with unabashed curiousity as she struck rocks and created sparks all around them. He knew about certain rocks and their ability to create fire, but maybe this mare's gift was connected to that somehow? Was she a fire starter?
"You're not going to set me on fire somehow, are you? I mean, I've made plenty of mistakes in the past, so I know how easy they are to make. I rather like being alive."
He watched, stepping back and flinching, as she set some weeds on fire. Yes, they were surrounded by water, but it always made him uncomfortable. He'd heard tales of lands set to ashes by great fires. He'd heard a story of the Exiled and their struggles on barren soil. Tem really didn't want things to escalate.
"Please be careful," he murmured, voice uneasy. His eyes grew big as she threw her hair at the fire. "Careful!" he shrieked. "Oh, gosh, don't hurt yourself. Are you okay? Is your neck singed? Do I need to get a healer? Wait, I am a healer... I'm really not good enough to deal with burns!"

"It's not constricting," the mare said, shaking her mane to shoo off some errant flies that were buzzing about hear ears. "It's comforting; I always know what's coming next," she said, tossing her head and twitching an ear as she sniffed the air, taking in the scents of the Shatter lands: the earthy tang of mud and cool scent of fresh water. She threw a quizzical glance in the stallion's direction as he nattered on about the small fire she was starting. "It's nothing but a little blaze," she said, as if Tem were frightened of nothing. Which....well....she thought he was; it wasn't like the fire was large at all, just a few wisps of grass burning in the cup of the rock. "Besides....you're surrounded by water," she said, motioning towards the rivulets of water running between the shatter lands. As she pulled herself away from the now dampened fire, Cadena snorted, flicking her tail at the young healer. "I'm fine; I've done this a million times before," she said, showing him with a shimmy of her hair that her skin was unblemished.
