[Setting: Just outside the Bachelor herd, a little less than a month after the draw between the Olde and the Bachelors]
It was the dead of night, otherwise Raphael wouldn't have been so close to his old herd. But his dark coat gave him enough camouflage in the dark to allow him peace of mind. He watched the bodies of milling bachelors and exiles as they searched for places to rest or went out to patrol. Ghost, Abel, Tobias, Lilith, Bat Sheva, the little worm Apollo... all his old herd mates, his underlings, going about their business. It was odd. Raphael almost felt like Klaus again, standing solitarily on his mount above them all, ever vigilant.
The former leader flinch as a shooting pain started in his chest. The bear wound was acting up... standing around was wearing on his torn muscles. Raphael let out an irritated huff. This was all Cain's damn fault, really. Right now, the friesian would be with his herd; he never would have run into the bear. He would have had a brood tending to his wounds. That wasn't his life anymore. Klaus was now Raphael: a loner. A lurking loner, who with a passion like the fire he could wield was set on receiving what was his. But he knew that to beat Cain in a fight, in the way a rightful bachelor leader should, Raphael would need to heal. He could not chance loosing, even if Cain was as slim and dainty as a serpent.
The former leader was about to turn away and find some distant place to rest, when suddenly he saw the movement of a pale horse from the rest of the herd. He flicked his ears forward and watched with keen eyes. Ishmael... One of Bat Sheva's many sons...
