Ember had been at it again. Ever since the fires had died out and the herd chose to try their luck on bachelor lands, she'd return countless times to the southern isle. She was searching for any shred of proof that her mother and the stallion that had attempted to rescue really did perish in the flames. As she was beginning to suspect, no such evidence was to be found; no matter how many times she returned or how many charred piles of bones she inspected. They were all the same. Some large, some small, but the same. Of course, she couldn't venture very far or for very long, as the land was plagued with dangers. Hungry predators with scarce food sources made it difficult to go about her search without interruption, and Ember would sooner avoid them than deal with every slobbering set of jaws eager for its next meal.
In an almost bitter mood, the brute of a mare was slowly plodding her way towards the land bridge to eastern isle. She'd been gone from her herd for too long, and there was no point in continuing her search with so little insight to gain. So, it was done. Over. Time to move on. No matter how much she told herself these things, her journey back still felt empty. It took a sudden change in terrain, as the ground gave slightly against the pressure of her heavy hoof, to draw her attention away from such thoughts. Abruptly she came to a complete stop, stubby tail swishing in irritation as the shire paused to paw at the sand. She'd made it to the coast at least, and now it just became a matter of finding that land bridge.
The mare's massive head swung around to view her homeland for what she suspected would be the last time in a long time. She had no plans on coming back to search its ashen remains again; but, part of her wished one of those horrid grass beasts would show its ugly mug before she left. She'd love to kick it in a few times, just to be rid of these negative feelings that swarmed and squirmed in her guts. Ugh. If it was one thing Ember hated, it was failure. Failure at finding any concrete evidence to put the issue at rest, and failure to not feel these things at all. It would be so much easier to just kick something and be done with it!
