'Romping in the Woods' With thegoldenkitsune 's Pandora and blueunicornj13 's Ryder Timing: Summer of 12 years ago when both characters are 14 years old
It was a beautiful, summer day, and the sun shined brightly through the tree canopy, casting green light on the world below the trees. A brown and white paint walked through the vegetation, lifting his legs high enough to not catch his clumsy hooves on the vines that grew on the forest floor. Ryder had spent a couple of years on his own now, spending some of his time close to the herd that lived on the Southern island: the Exiles. He figured it'd be a lot safer to stick close by such a big group of horses than wander around the forest with a small herd of loners who had found him. His father would have a higher chance of finding him if he did that, and Ryder couldn't let that happen. He wasn't exactly on good terms with his father, and the young stallion feared of what would happen if they crossed paths again especially after what his father had done to his mother. The only thing that kept him from joining the Exile's ranks was the fact that his mother hadn't wished to be apart of them. Even if she was no longer with him, he didn't want to disrespect her memory by doing something that she wouldn't like. Plus, there had to be a good reason why she didn't want them to be Exiles, right? His mother had always wanted the best for him when she was alive, and if she had wanted him to join the Exiles, they would have done so a long time ago. "Maybe she'd still be alive if we had joined them though." Ryder said aloud, flattening his ears slightly as he walked further into the jungle.
He couldn't think that way. The loners that had found him and raised him back to health after he had run for her life from his father had tried their hardest to keep him optimistic, but it was hard not to think about the loss of someone you loved as much as your own mother. That was part of reason he had ventured out on his own today to follow after the Exile herd. He wanted to take a ease his mind and maybe have a little adventure of his own. Before any adventures could be had though his torn ear swiveled backwards as he heard something behind him. Ryder ducked into the undergrowth, worming his way under a bush and praying that who or whatever it was hadn't seen him before it was too late.

There were many little hooves running, though some came to a stop one continued only to slow down not far from Ryder's hiding spot ".... Guys? whats wrong?" a voice said soft and feminine but just a child like him. Other fillies farther away the ones who had stopped called back "We're not supposed to go any further we are going to get into trouble!" "Yah and I thought I saw something!". This caused the closest voice to snort and stamp her foot in irritation "ugh you fillies are such babies, we wont be gone for that long" only to have the voices call back "You can keep going Pandora but we are going back to the herd" little Pandora huffed and yelled out after them "CHICKENS!" before looking around as she whispered to herself ".... probably just a squirrel... right?" she began to pace around looking about the place from side to side even passing by Ryder's hiding spot a couple of times.
She only let out another snort after a minute of looking "tch I was right, what younglings" her black curly tail swishing over Ryder's hiding spot as she sat down before it trying to think of something fun she could do on her own.

Ryder laid silently in the undergrowth, keeping his breaths shallow in order to not be heard from the horses that ventured close to him. His ears pricked forward slightly, catching the sound of voices bubble toward him as they spoke. His curly, brown mane fell into his face as he huddled in his hiding place. From the sound of it, the horses were young, probably around his age, but from the sound of their high pitched tones, Ryder guessed that they were fillies. 'Maybe they won't like the forest, and they'll leave.' He thought hopefully. Who knew what these strangers would do if they caught him here. They might go get their parents who might not let him leave.
His teeth clenched together as one of them trotted close to his hiding place, shouting at the others to follow. He almost sighed in relief when the others declined, saying they were going back to their herd. Dark hooves still stood in front of him, pacing back and forth as if she were looking for something. Had she seen him? Ryder flinched when her black tail swung into his hiding place, swishing over his nose. "Achoo!" He sneezed, and his blue eyes widened in fear afterwards. If she didn't know that he was there before, she definitely knew he was there now.

Pandora was ruling out various ideas in her head when she suddenly heard a loud sneeze from behind her springing unto her hooves with a very girly yelp of panic as she burst forward running behind a tree. If it was some monster she was going to have to run screaming for her daddy, turning around peeking from behind the tree at the bush. She waited when nothing happened she began glaring at the offending bush trying to be brave like her father but her voice wavered "W-w-whose there?" then shaking her head snorting and stomping her foot "I-If that's you Gaius I am so going to buck you, if you do not show yourself you little wierdo! you got till the count of three!" she stepped closer to the bush beginning to count "one... " moving over the bush now not knowing if Ryder lifted his head the two would literally be face to face "two.... th-"

The young stallion waited anxiously as he heard the other horse scramble away. Just as he had thought that he had scared her away, her wavering voice cut through the silence. He snorted nervously as she began her count: one, two, th-. Before the black haired filly could finish, Ryder stuck his head out, coming up nose to nose with her as he stood up from his hiding place. His blue eyes met her purple ones as she peered down into his hiding place. A sheepish smile crawled onto his face, pulling up the corners of his lips. "S-sorry if I scared you. I-I was just walking through here when you and your friends came by, a-and I hid." He explained, stuttering nervously. Ryder cleared his throat, which was a nervous habit of his that often crept up whenever he was in a situation like this, and walked further out from behind the tall undergrowth, shaking off any leaves and dirt that clung to his pelt. "My name is Ryder. What's yours?" Ryder asked, hoping that friendliness might help smooth over any ill feelings that might be there after he had startled her. He'd be in a world of trouble if she went and got her parents or her friends for that matter. If he guessed, he would assume that a lot of the foals wouldn't be able to help themselves from telling their parents about the strange foal that they had found in the forest.

Pandora's last words were cut off by comming face to face with the young foal stunned her into silence as she quickly pulled her head back looking at him not sure what to saw or do she felt like a frozen deer. When the foal got out of the bush all covered in leaves that he had to shake off all her tension was cut off with a giggle. She moved up to him gently reaching to take out a leaf from his mane and spit it out with a chuckle "You missed one...." looking back at him "good to know you have a name or else I would have had to call you bush monster" She noticed that this Ryder foal was nervous he looked like he was ready to bolt to her. Course she had never seen many other horses outside of her own herd, certainly not any other foals but she did know all the foals in the heard and he wasn't one "Pandora, your not from around here are you?... sorry for threatening to buck you, my father tells me its best to hit first and apologize later". Nodding her head at such talk as if it were some kind of sagely wisdom rather then some possibly bad advice.

Ryder stood still as the filly came toward him, giggling as she plucked another leaf from his messy mane. He chuckled softly, blushing in embarrassment. "Thanks. Hiding in a bush wasn't exactly a good idea I guess." He said, looking at himself to make sure he hadn't missed any other pesky things from his hair. When he was satisfied that all of the leaves were gone, he swung his head back to look at her. "Heh. I guess that is a good thing. Being called the bush monster doesn't sound like very much fun." His blue eyes drifted to the forest around them, making sure that the two of them were alone. There were plenty of predators out there that would love to meet a lone foal or two. His attention was brought back to the present as she introduced herself, and he offered her a small smile. "H-hi, Pandora. And no, I'm not from around here. Well... not exactly anyways. That's your herd over there, right?" He asked nervously, flicking his tail as he looked past the tree line toward the large gathering of horses in the nearby field. Ryder laughed softly, shrugging his shoulders. "It's alright. I'm just glad that you didn't buck me."

"Not it wasn't not unless you wanted to look like a tree" she said with another giggle before smiling at the new foal, he seemed nice after all. Looking to where he indicated seeing the rest of her herd not too far off she nodded her head "Yup! my daddy is that big mustang there he's a guard but he started out as a scout" she said proudly standing a little straighter and keeping her head high for a moment before looking back at Ryder "If I did though I would have said sorry, by the way.... if your not from here then.... where are your parents?" she asked lifting her head to look around the place even doing at little twirl around to see the whole area "I don't see them anywhere, did you get lost? if your lost im sure daddy wouldn't mind letting you stay with us until your parents come and get you" she said moving to walk around like the anxious little filly she was "oh! we could play all sorts of games~"

Ryder turned his blue eyes back on the Exiles as Pandora pointed out her father. He was a large horse, standing on the outskirts of the herd and looking as though he were looking out for danger or anything else that might try to sneak up on them as they grazed. Ryder wasn't too sure what all a guard or a scout did, but being a guard sounded important, and from Pandora's posture, he could tell that she was definitely proud to call him one. His head sank slightly at her next question. "Um... My father is around, but my mother... she's not with me any more." He said, avoiding the fact that his father was a murderous stallion that he never wanted to see again, and his mother was dead because of him. Ryder flicked his torn ear toward her, listening intently as Pandora continued on. All of her offers sounded nice, but being the such a huge group of horses was scary. Not to mention the loners who had taken him in would be expecting him back by nightfall. They'd be worried about him if he didn't return. "That's alright. I have someone I'm living with. I just wanted to go exploring without them today. W-we could still play games if you want. There's not a lot of foals where I come from. You're the first one I've met in a long time actually." Ryder said, wagging his tail slightly.

"Oh...." Pandora immediately felt guilty at bringing up Ryder's parents when she heard that his mother had died, she knew of other foals who had lost a parent it was a sad thing. But she was glad to hear that he had somewhere to sleep tonight nodding her head "Oh well that's good, oh I love games! and riddles! mother tells me lots and lots of riddles" getting very excited at the prospect of finally having someone to play with who wasn't a scaredy cat about wandering around "I like you Ryder" she stated plainly with a nod of the head before giggling as she reached over to nudge him before taking off in a run laughing like the happy little filly that she was "TAG! your it your it!"

Ryder flinched slightly at the obvious guilt on the filly's face as she guessed the fate of his mother. It wasn't her fault of course. She hadn't known, but the look on her face was all too familiar whenever someone found out his mother was gone. He breathed a sigh of relief as Pandora spoke again, this time returning to her giddy tone. Ryder grinned happily, thinking of the last time he had actually gotten to play with another foal. It had been such a long, long time. "I love games too! I can't say I've heard that many riddles though. Maybe you can tell me some." Ryder said. His mother had told him plenty of stories of unicorns and other such things, but he had never really heard any riddles. "I like you too, Pandora. You seem really fun." His ears flicked forward as she nudged his shoulder, and a giggle escaped him as he gave chase, darting after the filly on his lanky legs. "You better watch out! Here I come." Ryder called, running after Pandora. His hooves caught on an overgrown vine, and he nearly fell as he tripped over it, but Ryder quickly regained his composure and continued the chase. He giggled madly, seeing the forest around him blur as they ran through the trees. After a few minutes of chasing after her, Ryder finally caught up, tagging her flank before darting off in the opposite direction. "Tag! Now, you're it!"

"Bet you can't catch me!" she called out laughing all the way as the two of them played amongst the tree, she had stopped to check he was okay from the trip he took before resuming the game. Getting tagged herself she turned to chase after him now, their game lasted a while until Pandora herself was a little pooped as she flopped over on the ground with a laugh "okay! I give up! you win" launching herself into a fit of giggles as she panted for air looking up at Ryder "That was so fun!.... you were so fast!" praising him for the good time that she had, after all most boys didn't want to play with a girl like her and she disliked most of the games the girls played. Though she tilted her head looking to the changing colours in the sky before returning her gaze back to Ryder with a sad worried look "Your... going to come back tomorrow right?"

Ryder giggled, chasing her through the trees until the two of them eventually tired each other out. He flopped down beside her, panting and chuckling quietly as he tried to catch his breath. He smiled down at her as she giggled and fought for air. "That was a ton of fun! You're pretty fast yourself. I thought I'd never catch you!" He said, breaking out in another fit of laughter. It had been such a long time since he had had such a good time. Ever since he had started his life away from his parents, he had felt so alone and bored. It was a relief to finally be able to play with someone again and just be himself. His blue eyes drifted toward the changing colors of the sky, and he frowned slightly in disappointment. He'd have to be leaving soon to make sure he wasn't out in the forest at night. It wasn't a good time for foals to be wandering around by themselves. Not that there was ever really a good time for such a young horse to be alone in this dangerous world. Ryder nodded vigorously at her question. "Of course, and we can play more games tomorrow if you want. Or we could go exploring! I know a lot of cool places around here that we could go see." The young stallion said, grinning happily as he stood. "I should be going now though. It's getting late, and I don't want to make the horses who are caring for me worried." Ryder shook the dirt off of his pelt, turning one last time to look back at Pandora. "I'll meet you here tomorrow morning. Okay?"

She joined in her laughter, happy to have a friend she enjoyed her life sure but that doesn't mean it couldnt get better now that this foal was in it certainly it would be alot funner. Her sad look vanished when he grinned at her and explained that he would indeed be back again, the pout turning upside down breaking out into a grin of her own. Even her ear perked up course that curly mess that was her mane had fallen about her face she simply snorted and shook her head to straight it up chuckling "that would be great! I like new places!" Standing up with Ryder as she though on it a bit more "..... ummm I may be a little late father likes to give me lessons in the morning and I can't skip that or else he would probably chase me down" she giggled nervously at that "Mama says he means well though and sometimes they are fun but really really hard~ BUT I'll try to see if I can get out early and we will meet right here. You better go home, I don't want them to worry about you either or they might not let you come visit"

Ryder's tail flicked behind him as Pandora stood up with him. His ears swiveled in her direction, listening to her as she spoke. "Oh okay! I'll just come later. I wouldn't want you to miss any of your training. I'll come near sun high that way you have plenty of time to train and meet me." Ryder said, grinning happily. It was nice to make plans with someone for once. They were going to have so much fun! He just needed to think of a place to take her. There were plenty of awesome spots in the forest, but he didn't want to take her too far from her herd just in case her parents came looking for her. He'd think about it on the way home. The brown paint nodded, walking into the forest toward the middle of the island. "Alright. See you tomorrow, Pandora." Ryder called back, trotting away and disappearing into the bushes, his brown pelt blending in with the tree trunks around him. It wouldn't be that long of a walk back to the small group of horses that he was staying with. They tended to stay near the center of the island, making it easy to meet back up with them whenever he went on his little excursions.
