'Who Let the Dogs Out?'zombise 's Mallen and blueunicornj13 's Little Bird Timing: A couple of weeks after the war and the loners finding the Crescent island A gentle breeze blew through the Summer Fields as a roan mare galloped through the tall grass. She wove through the overgrown vegetation, trying to make it harder for the dangerous predators that were behind her to follow. Her sides heaved from the effort of carrying her body over the steep hills of the Eastern island, and she could feel the hot breath of the grass beasts on her heels. Little Bird gritted her teeth, kicking out with her back legs and clipping one of the dog's jaws with a sharp hoof. A smirk crossed her lips at the beast's whimper, but her small victory was quickly demolished as it was quickly replaced with another that nipped at her back legs, threatening to make her fall. The loner mare snorted loudly, trying to push her legs to go faster, but it was evident that she was getting tired. Her mind whirled for options. Turn and fight, or possibly wear herself out to the point where she would be an easy meal for them?
Little Bird made a sharp turn, making sure the predators were on her flank before turning to face them. Her ears were flattened against her neck, and her brown eyes flared with anger as she swept her gaze over the small pack of grass beasts that had found her. The beasts snarled at her, snapping their jaws menacingly. Their yellow teeth shined brightly in the spring sun, and their mangy pelts blew in the breeze as they circled her. Little Bird turned in small circles, trying to keep the majority of them in her view as much as she possibly could. "Why in Chevalin couldn't you stupid dogs find someone else to mess with? I'm sure there are plenty of other horses who would love to play with you, doggies." She snarled at them, snorting loudly and lashing her tail like an angered cougar. Her head snapped to the side as she caught a flash of movement, and she whinnied loudly in surprise as one of the brown beasts jumped at her neck. She reared onto her hind legs, coming down on the predator's paw when it tried to dart out of the way. It yowled out in pain, limping a short distance away before returning to circling her, slowly but surely closing the distance between them.

Mallen Word Count: 374 Mallen found himself among the tall grass of the Summer Fields, the blades tickling his underside with the breeze as he weaved snake-like patterns in the greenery. The sun beat down on his dark back, washing the stallion with warmth that crept to his bones. He was having a rather lazy day, his ears flopped to the side and hoof-steps heavy. However, he was still aware. Every unexplained movement of the tall grass caused him to flinch, his attention immediately turning toward the sound, watching the area until he deemed it safe. He knew the predators that lurked here were not a force to be reckoned with. He had almost made it to the edge of the tall grass, his thick muscles finally relaxing and a sigh of relieved air escaping his lips; but in the distance he heard a sharp yelp of pain. His head flung up, his ears flicking in the direction of the sound. It sounded like the mangy mutts of the Fields. A shiver ran down his spine and he furrowed his brow. He hated those. The sound died down and he turned to leave once more, when the sound of snarling replaced it. With a small sigh, the stallion made a rash decision. If he were the one stuck fighting them, he would want someone to help as well.
Not allowing himself to think much more upon the matter, the stallion wheeled upon his hooves and sprang into a gallop in the direction of the snarls. The tall grass blurred around him as he plunged forward, his hooves digging into the soft ground with each stride. His muscles stretched under his skin, his heart racing in his chest, his nostrils flaring with each breath. He was defiantly built for power, not speed. When the first beast came into view, he didnt stop. He dipped his head in front of him and gritted his teeth, barreling into the snarling dog and only stopping at the last moment. The beast stumbled under his hooves, yelping in surprise and pain as Mallen gathered himself and lunged straight for the stumbling predator's throat. He hadnt even noticed the mare; his full attention trained on the struggling mutt held captive in his jaws.

Little Bird's heart hammered in her chest as she carefully eyed the predators around her. Their jaws snapped viciously, warning her of what was to come if she didn't think of a way to get out of this. It wouldn't be long before they decided it was time to attack, and she would be a sitting duck. However, everything seemed to come to a stop at the thundering sound of hooves on the ground coming toward them. The roan mare turned her head just in time to see a dark horse appear from the tall grass, propelling himself forward until he slammed into a nearby beast. The dog yelped in surprise but was cut off as the large horse lunged for its throat, taking the furry animal into his jaws. Her eyes grew wide in shock as she watched it struggled for a moment before going limp, laying motionless in the stranger's mouth. Well, wasn't this her lucky day? Just when she had thought that the unicorns had hung her out to dry in this dangerous place, someone had come to help her. She just hoped things wouldn't come back to bite her on the butt when this was all over.
Just as quickly as the world had seemed to halt, it was thrown back into the present. The other grass beasts lunged forward, growling and barking madly for their lost pack member. Her muscles tightened as one lunged for her leg, but Little Bird was quick enough to sidestep the beast, getting just out of reach of its sharp teeth. Her head swiveled around as she felt one clamber onto her haunches, weighing her down enough to make her stumble. Snorting loudly, the mare reach back, grabbing the predator by the scruff and ripping it off of her back. It growled angrily before she reared, using her body weight to crush it as she came back down on its side. Her nostrils flared as she took deep breaths, feeling hot blood drip from the scratches on her side that the beast had left. Fantastic. She turned her gaze from the dead dog back toward the other remaining predators. This wasn't over quite yet, and she wasn't going to stop fighting until all of them were dealt with.

Mallen Word count: 539 The animal had died in his jaws, its body falling limp and the metallic taste of blood filling the stallion's mouth. Mallen's ears flicked back at the sound of another approaching, and then a few more after that. A snarl was brought to his lips as he looked up to see one staring him down from a distance. It seemed to be counting down, as suddenly, all at once, three sprang at him. Ducking his head, the stallion swung the dead weight of the grass beast and flung it toward his closest attacker. He was proud to hear the pained yelp indicating it had his his target, but he was quickly brought to reality when another one lunged at his neck. The stallion dodged just in the nick of time, at least escaping the slobbery jaws of the angry dog. However, he wasnt nearly as lucky as before. It's claws raked up his neck, tearing the skin away and leaving it dripping with blood. He flinched at the feel of the warm sticky blood trickling through his coat, looking down just in time to see a drop splash against his hoof. Okay, now this was personal. Wheeling around, he slammed his head into an airborne dog, his teeth gritting together as pain shifted across his forehead. However, the dog fell to the ground in a daze, its eyes slightly crossed as it tried to determine what had just happened. That gave Mallen a bit of time to deal with the other two.
The one that had taken a chunk out his neck tried again, Mallen's blood still clinging to it's paws as it lunged toward the stallion. Rearing, Mallen pressed his hoof into the top of it's head and came crashing down upon in. A large cracking sound emitted from impact as Mallen drilled it into the ground, the beast's skull shattering under the force of his hooves and sticky blood clinging to his hooves. Mallen stepped away, craning his neck back to look at the other he had dazed. It hadnt quite come back to its senses, a small smirk playing across the stallion's lips as he dealt a swift kick to the back of its skull. He gritted his teeth together, a small gasp escaping his lips as the full feeling of the gash across his neck made itself present. He shifted his eyes back to try to see it, but failed miserably. Maybe it was for the best.
Shaking away the pain, he turned back to help handle the problem. For the first time, he was able to analyze the situation. His gaze followed the trail of death predators to land upon a bright roan mare. He quirked his brow at the sight of her own share of cuts and scrapes from the fight. His ear flicked to the side at the sound of grass rustling from the side. He furrowed his brow at the sight of another dog, completely oblivious to the presence of the stallion. It's sights were stuck on the mare, its body pressed close to the ground as it tried to sneak up on her. Not today. Mallen lunged at it, knocking it to its side and turning its attention on him.

Little Bird watched as the large stallion held the dead animal in his jaw just long enough to use it as a weapon against the remaining grass beasts as they lunged after him. She gasped quietly, feeling the pain from her wounds sear through her, and the rapid movements of the beasts and the stranger as they clashed. The muscular horse dealt swift blows to the dogs as they reached for his throat. She flinched when one managed to rake its sharp claws down the back of his neck, creating deep wounds on him that seeped thick, red liquid down his coat. It appeared that a fire from within him seemed to be sparked once his own blood was spilled, and the mare watched as he viciously crushed two of the dog's skulls with a sickening crunch of their bones. Man, she was certainly glad that he had come around. It would have been another sort of bloodbath if he hadn't. Bird swept her gaze over the one grass beast that she had managed to kill with a frown. Too bad she hadn't been able to kill more of those filthy vermin. At least then she would have felt that she was pulling her own weight in this fight.
Her ears swiveled back toward him as the fighting ceased and his forest green eyes looked over the trail of bodies to finally land on her. She flicked her tail, noticing the slight look of bewilderment on his face as he looked at her. Had he really charged into all of this without knowing what he was fighting for? Little Bird spotted the x-scar across his muzzle and snorted. Bachelors were born ready for war, and it didn't surprise her that one would be so ready to jump into a fight like this. Before Little Bird could open her mouth to speak, the sound of a deep growl filled her ears as a dog crept toward her. She gasped in surprise, and there was a flurry of movement beside her as the black and white haired stallion lunged forward, hitting the dog before it could grab her. The roan mare snorted angrily, charging after the beast after the palomino stallion had knocking it to its side and taken its attention off of herself. Little Bird quickly darted to its flank, rearing onto her hind legs and coming down hard on its back. The dog yowled in pain, looking up at her with a shocked expression as if it had forgotten that she was there. A smirk crossed her lips, and she kicked her hoof at the dog's head, cracking its skull with a dull thud.
Little Bird's sides heaved as she panted, and sweat and blood covered her pelt. She looked around them once more to double check that that was the last of the deadly predators before letting out a loud sigh, glancing behind her at the wounds on her rump. She'd need to find some herbs, and a river or pond would be lovely to wash all of this grime off. Shaking her head, the mare turned her head to look back at the stallion who had helped her. The wound on his neck added to the many other scars that riddled his pelt. "Thanks. I really appreciate the help. Just when I thought this island couldn't throw me any other surprises, those things decided that I'd be a good meal." Little Bird joked with a small chuckle, wincing at the pain from her wounds.

Mallen Word count: 420 The stallion stepped back as the mare swooped in around him, taking on the beast from her advantage. A sharp yowl of pain shot from the animal as her hooves drove into its brittle bones, a sickening crunch ringing through the air. The beast's body fell to the ground with a thump, a final gasp of air escaping its lungs as it's rigid body fell limp. Mallen snorted and circled slowly, examining each of the bodies to make sure they were actually truly dead. He's had enough fakers in his life time, pretend to be dead and attack him from behind. He wasnt going to fall for that again. Once he deemed each and one of them actually dead, he finally turned his attention back to the mare. He had to admit, he was born for a good fight. He hadnt really been paying attention to his battle buddy and now noticed that she was a complete stranger- as in, he had never seen her before. He flicked his ears forward at her soft voice and merely chuckled.
"No problem." He chuckled lightly, wincing as pain from that small movement shot through his neck. He craned his gaze back, trying to see the damage. He couldnt see much, but he noticed the slight pink skin and smeared blood throughout his coat. "Thats gonna leave a mark.." He muttered to himself under his breath, his brow narrowing ever so slightly. Dont get him wrong, he loved each and one of his battle scars, but this one was a bit pathetic. It looked worse than it really was. He then turned to the mare and examined her own deal of wounds and scraped littering her body. "I suppose we should try to get cleaned up.. dont want to get infected. That would be a sorry sight- surviving the grass beasts and then dying from a silly little scratch." He chuckled to himself as if it were the funniest thing he had ever heard. He tipped his head to the side, motioning for the mare to follow along, and started out toward the water.
One ear suddenly flicked back toward the mare as Mallen decided to attempt this small talk thing. He wasnt used to having time to stroll and chat, so he figured it was time to take advantage. "You say the island likes to throw surprises at you? Are you some kind of bad luck omen?" He asked with a teasing tone, his brow quirking as he glanced back at her.

Little Bird stood silently, eying the still beasts as the large stallion walked around to each one of them to make sure each of them were dead she assumed. She had seen grass beasts and cougars alike pretend to be dead only to come back and bite you on the rear, and she definitely didn't want to have to deal with any more of these mangy mutts. The mare took deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling through her nose in an attempt to catch her breath. It had been such a long time since she had gotten into a serious fight the adrenaline pumping through her veins was like a drug, sending her to cloud-nine at the sight of the dead dogs lying in the dirt around them. She had done that.... well, she had done that to at least two of them anyways. But it still made her feel as though she could actually fend for herself and perform her job like her father would have wanted her to. She might not have been the tough, burly stallion her father had wanted, but at least she was trying to make him proud of her.
Her brown eyes swept over to the dappled when she heard his deep, rumbling voice break the silence around them. She winced along with him at the sight of his wound. The grass beast's teeth had certainly done a number on him. Thankfully, the beasts hadn't bit into a more dangerous spot like the soft skin of his throat. That wouldn't have been a very easy wound to walk away with. Little Bird strode forward, seeing him mumbling something under his breath. Her own wounds weren't very deep, but they sure did sting. Darn those nasty creatures' claws and teeth. It felt like each scratch were filled with salt, stinging like nothing she had ever felt before. A chuckle escaped her at his words, and she nodded her head in agreement. "Yeah, that's probably a good idea. I'd hate to say that I survived a pack of grass beasts, but died shortly after from some little scratches. Plus, if I were going to die from something like that, I'd rather say I died fighting rather than lying down somewhere to rot." Bird joked, flicking her head back to get her long, curly mane out of her line of sight.
Little Bird walked behind him, following him to where she assumed some sort of body of water was. Being on the Eastern island, the Ranger assumed the palomino horse was one of the infamous Bachelors that she had heard so much about, and the x-shaped scar on his muzzle confirmed it. 'As long as he doesn't try any funny business, he's alright in my book.' He had saved her life after all, so he couldn't be all bad. Her mind snapped back to the present at his teasing tone, and a playful smirk pulled up the corners of her lips. "Well, you could say that I've met a few challenges here and there during my travels on this island. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that I'm a bad omen, but I guess it depends on what end of my luck you happen to be on." Bird joked back, giggling lightly. It felt like it had been such a long time since she had joked around and laughed. Ever since the passing of her father, she felt like she should be mourning not having fun or celebrating. It just felt... weird without him. "My name is Little Bird by the way. Most tend to just call me Bird though. So what's your name, hero?" The roan mare asked, tilting her head curiously at the stallion in front of her.
