Storm on the Horizon blueunicornj13 's Little Bird and jeangal247 's Esterellita Timing: A few days after the war and the loner's time on the Crescent island The day had started off bright and shining. The sun had cast its warm rays on the world below, nourishing the grass that seemed to be plentiful here on the Eastern island. Little Bird roamed the nearby land from the landbridge connecting this island to the island that the unicorns had been trapped on for all these years, singing quietly to herself. The roan mare shook her head in disbelief at the very thought that what she had once thought was a fairytale was now very very true. A small sigh escaped her as she flicked her head, getting her long, reddish mane out of her face. Her brown eyes swept over the muddy landscape, and she picked her way around the large expanses of sand pits and other dangerous looking obstacles. Her gaze swept up to the sky as she heard the clash of thunder. Black clouds swirled towards her, and rain could be seen in the distance. Little Bird grumbled quietly to herself. She had had hopes that she would get a chance to do some more exploring today, but it looked as though the weather would be quick to ruin that for her. "Hopefully, I'll be able to do more tomorrow. Or maybe the storm won't last that long." She spoke to herself, nodding as she picked her way through the marsh. Her brown eyes sought shelter, scanning the landscape for any signs of a nice, warm place where she could ride out this storm. Her ears flattened as another loud bang of thunder reverberated through the lowlands, seeming to shake the earth around her. 'Did it have to be a thunderstorm? I can live with rain, but all this loud clashing and banging is awful.'
Her well-muscled legs from all the years of training to be a Ranger pushed her along her path. Her eyes brightened at the sight of a cave nearby, and she quickly made her way toward it, sighing in relief that she had actually found somewhere to stay out of this dreadful weather. Little Bird's ears swiveled backwards, however, when she heard the sound of someone nearby. Was that a call for help, or was she mistaken? Bird glanced once more at the welcoming sight of the cave before shaking her head. It was her duty to protect those that needed help, and she wasn't about to let someone get hurt just because of a little bad weather. "Hello? Is anyone out there?" She called, trotting in the direction she had thought she had heard the call for help come from.

Esterellita had ventured into the marsh lands of the East Island. She had heard that her fellow loners had found the long lost unicorns, but when she tried to find the landbridge to the newly found island, she got a bit lost. Upon deciding to turn back toward the East Island, she walked her way towards what she thought was toward the island. She sighed to herself, "They should really make something so creatures can't get lost, like...oh I don't know. A mark or something." She said to herself as she tried her best to avoid sandpits, vines, and other things that could cause her clumsiness to get her into trouble. A boom of thunder caused her to jump slightly as she looked up at the sky. An angry bunch of clouds was heading her way, and one could see the rain off in the distance. I better go find some shelter, she thought to herself. Her eyes looked around for some sort of cave, maybe even a hollow tree of some sorts. Another boom of thunder caused her to jump again. "Ok ok! I'm going! Goodness, mother nature just can't--AAAHH!"
Esterellita had to cut herself short as she fell into one of the many small ponds in the marshland. She had also managed to get tangled up in some of the hanging vines from the trees. Her head popped out of the water and she coughed up the water that had managed to get into her throat. "Curse my clumsiness! Well, at least it can't get any worse." She spoke too soon, for she felt herself slowly sinking into the water. As it turned out, the layer of water had covered up the quicksand pit. Esterellita tried to squirm her way out, but between the sand gripping her legs and the vines wrapped around her, she couldn't get out any further. There was only one thing to do, "Help! ¡Ayuda! Somebody!" "Hello? Is anyone out there?" "Over here!" Esterellita called out as she heard another voice. Thank goodness, she thought as she sighed a relief. A flash of lightning and another boom of thunder caused her to flatten her ears. "Well...I guess it could be worse..." she mumbled as she felt herself sink a little lower.

Little Bird wove her way through the marsh, careful to avoid that large pools of water. Her father had warned her that some of the water here hid sinkholes, and she certainly didn't want to get stuck in one of those. It amazed her sometimes that this land the horses of Chevalin called home was so full of dangers. Her ears perked up, swiveling toward the sound of the voice as they called out once more to alert her to where they were. Rounding a larger tree, Bird found a mare chest deep in what appeared to be a pit of water and quicksand. Her eyes widened for a moment at the sight of the muddy mare who seemed to be slowly sinking deeper and deeper into the sand, and she began searching for something that she could use to get her out. It was her job as a Ranger to help others out in their time of need, and Bird had spent hours honing her skills in order to be able to do the best she possibly could. One of the skills that she had found most useful was her mind. Being able to solve problems with ease and conquering them was something she used far more often than any of her other skills.
"Don't worry, miss. I'm a Ranger. I'll help you out." Bird said over the booming sound of thunder. Her eyes brightened once she found a lengthy piece of vine, and she quickly scooped it up into her mouth. "Grab a hold of this vine, and I'll pull you out, alright?" Little Bird nodded at her encouragingly, tossing one end of the vine into the pit just in front of her. Her teeth gripped the other half tightly, ready to help the other horse out of trouble.

She couldn't believe it, a ranger! Right here in front of her! There was no time to fangirl now though, Esterellita gave a kind smile at the roan mare and grabbed the end of the vine. "Ready," she said between the vine and her teeth. The strong roan mare pulled back with all her might, and Esterellita tried to find her footing under the seemingly bottomless pit. A flash of lightning and a boom of thunder signaled the rain to come pouring down on the two mares. Feeling herself rising from the sand and slowly made her way to the ground. She managed to get her right front leg out of the sand and onto the ground. Her eyes were closed tightly as she struggled to get out of the pit. Another boom of thunder and crash of lightning sounded above the two horses. The rain seemed to pour harder and it was starting to hurt her back. Her left front leg was now free and she pushed herself up onto the marshy ground.
She stood there for a moment, panting and trying to catch her breathe. She looked up at the roan mare, "Muchas gracias, chica." Giving her a thankful smile.

Little Bird pulled back, feeling her muscles strain as she tried to pull the mare free of the pit that she had found herself in. Her grasp around the vine in her jaws tightened, making sure she didn't lose her grip. It wouldn't be very good if she lost the only thing she could find to help pull the other horse out of this mess. The roan mare's ears fell back against her skull as a flash of lightening filled her vision, followed shortly after by the loud clash of thunder. Rain poured down on them from the swirling, black clouds above, quickly drenching her pelt in ice cold water. Little Bird pulled harder as she saw one of the mare's legs pull free of the muddy marsh. Just one more leg and she might be able to haul herself out of the sinkhole. Bullets of rain pelted down on her, almost stinging her back with each drop as they fell from the heavens above. They needed to get to that cave before the storm got any worse. She sighed in relief when her other leg was freed and she pulled herself onto steadier ground.
Little Bird rushed forward, making sure she was alright and straining her ears to hear her over the pounding rain and thunder. "No problem. There's a cave nearby that's big enough for both to seek shelter there." Little Bird said, tilting her head in the direction of the cave. The larger mare turned so that her shoulder was closer to the grey haired mare. "You can lean on my shoulder if you'd like. I bet you're exhausted from hauling yourself out of that sandpit."

Esterellita shook her head, "I'll be alright, you're probably more exhausted than me. Dragging my fat butt out of the sandpit." She joked over the rain and thunder as she followed the mare to the cave. A little slower than she would normally, because she was indeed tired, but she didn't want to further tire out the mare that saved her life more than she already had. It appeared the roan mare was right, the cave was big enough for the two of them and a few feet between them. She shook her grey mane and tail, she saw that some of the water had gone onto her new companion and she smiled apologetically. "Sorry señorita. Again, muchas gracias for saving me." The rain wasn't as loud in the cave and she could talk in her normal toned voice. Esterellita looked over at her companion. She had a pretty coat, but most roans were naturally beautiful, Lucky, Esterellita thought to herself. She looked down and notice that the older mare's back hoof had a stripe on it, and Esterellita smiled at her. "Nice hoof mark," she gestured to the roan mare's hoof then gestured to her own stripped hoof.
"Pardon me, but did I hear you correctly when you said you were a Ranger?" She asked while looking at the mare, her eyes shinning with excitement.

Little Bird nodded, feeling the rain water soak her pelt and mane as they walked toward the cave. A chuckle escaped her at the other mare's joke. "You're not fat. It would have been hard dragging a foal out of that sandpit. It doesn't help that this storm decided to be one of the harshest I've seen in a long time." She said, talking a little louder than usual to talk over the pounding rain and thunder. The roan mare walked at a brisk pace. Her muscles were tired from helping her out of the pit, but it wasn't something that she wasn't used to. She'd spent her entire life training to overcome feelings like this, and she wanted nothing more than to get out of this weather as quickly as she possibly could. Once she arrived at the cave, Little Bird looked back outside just as the grey-haired mare followed after her. She shook out her long mane, sending water droplets cascading around them. Laughter erupted from her when the other mare shook herself off, lightly spraying her with cold, rain water. "It's alright. A little water can't hurt you. Don't worry about it. It's my job after all to help." Little Bird said with a dip of her head. The rain made a rhythmic sound on the cave, droning on as the storm raged outside. Thankfully, the sound wasn't as intense inside of the cave as it was outside. Bird never thought she'd get away from all of that thunder. Laying down on the cave floor, Little Bird stretched out her legs, allowing the water to drip off of her as she dried herself. Her ears swiveled toward the paint mare beside her as she spoke, smiling down at her as she pointed toward her back hoof. Little Bird glanced back at her leg, spotting the striped mark on one of her hooves. She chuckled, motioning at the other mare's own striped hooves. "Thank you. You've got quite a few nice hoof marks yourself."
Little Bird looked back to the mouth of the cave as a flash of lightening illuminated the opening followed shortly after by a loud clash of thunder. The roan mare looked back over when the younger horse spoke again. "Yep, you heard me correctly. I'm a Ranger. I don't think I introduced myself though. My name is Little Bird." Little Bird introduced herself, smiling warmly at the younger mare. A curious expression crossed her face at her look of excitement. She'd never had anyone ask if she were a Ranger before, and she certainly hadn't had anyone look so excited about it. "Why do you ask?"

The unique mare smiled down at Little Bird, "My name is Esterllita. I like your name." Her Spanish accent making her easily roll out her name, and her eyes flashed with more excitement. "It must be so cool being a Ranger. Getting to help all kinds of people and all." The mare laid down beside her new companion, though at a friendly distance. "What's it like being a Ranger? How many people have you saved?" She suddenly gasped in excitement, "Did you ever meet The Protector?!" She blushed a bit, realizing she hasn't give the poor roan mare a change to breathe let alone speak. "Sorry, I've always wanted to be a Ranger." She smiled sheepishly, "My papá always spoke so highly of them and believed that they were everything a Loner should stand for. I suppose his teachings have gone to my head a bit." Esterellita looked over at Little Bird, her ears perked forward in alertness and she waited for the mare to answer her questions. She hoped that she didn't annoy the mare though, Esterellita knew she could be a little annoying at times.

Little Bird looked up at her as her accent twiddled down to her. She couldn't say that she'd eve met a horse that talked that way and wondered where in the lands of Chevalin she had come from. Maybe it was just something she had picked up from her parents, assuming she was a loner that is. "Esterellita. That's a really pretty name. And thank you." Bird repeated her name back to her, stumbling on a few times where Esterellita had easily rolled out the name. The Ranger spotted the excitement on the younger mare's face. Puzzlement filled her though she let a small smile remain on her face. If Esterellita knew about the Rangers, she must be a loner. Listening carefully over the sound of the thunder and rain outside, the roan mare nodded along with each statement that was spoken. "Yes, it's quite cool. I really enjoy it. There's never a dull moment when I'm on the job." Little Bird said, thinking of all of the adventures she had had. Even though it wasn't necessarily true that she didn't ever get bored looking for horses to help, but it was enjoyable when she got the opportunity to. Her ears turned toward the grey-haired mare as her questions bubbled out of her. A soft laugh erupted out of her when Esterellita blushed at her onslaught of questions. "It's alright. I don't think I've ever met someone so excited to see a Ranger." Little Bird admitted, blushing a bit herself that Esterellita thought so highly of them. "Well, to start, I've saved a few horses in my lifetime. I can't say that I had to fight super dangerous predators each time or anything like that. Sometimes it's just helping someone out of a sticky situation much like yourself." Little Bird chuckled softly, stretching out her front legs in front of her as she continued answering her questions. "I haven't gotten to meet the Protector myself unfortunately. My father told me a lot about him though. Hopefully one day, I'll get the chance to meet him."
Little Bird thought for a moment about the Protector, imagining what he must look like based on what her father had told her. "Anyways, why don't you tell me a bit about yourself? And maybe I can answer anymore questions you might have about Rangers or myself if you really want." She offered, hoping to learn more about the enthusiastic, young mare and pass the time until this horrid storm is over.

The young mare sighed as she thought about an answer to Little Bird's question, only to simply shrug in response. "There's not much to tell. I am a loner, obviously," she joked. "I can talk quite a lot, which some find annoying so if you get a headache you can just tell me to shut up and I will." She laughed slightly. "Lets see...OH! And I also like clovers...like a lot." She grinned again, showing the white of her teeth, truthfully she didn't want to talk too much about herself. These sort of "tell me about yourself things" always tend to lead to speaking about the past. Which Esterellita really didn't want to go into, sure it wasn't as tragic as most but it still pained her to talk about it, and the least she wanted to do was show her emotional side to a stranger, a Ranger at that. After all, it wasn't everyday she got to meet a Ranger, in fact she was pretty sure this one the longest conversation she has had with one, or a conversation with one in general. "How did you become a Ranger? If you don't mind me asking of course." Another boom of thunder and crack of lightning flashed over top of them. Esterellita paid no attention to it though, a flick of her ear was her only movement. Her only interest was the older mare laying beside her, she quite liked Little Bird so far. The older mare hadn't told her to go away yet, not that she could. Its not like Esterellita could go anywhere right now without drowning in this pouring down rain anyways.
This mare had saved her, and Esterellita owed her greatly for that. Though her excitement about finally getting to sit down and talk to a Ranger was too great for her to be freaking out about her almost dieing experience. Not to mention this was her first time being saved BY a Ranger, she could hardly contain her happiness but she sat still as best as she could and choked back her squeals. The only thing that showed her excited was the light shinning in her wide eyes and the friendly/excited smile on her lips.

((OOC: Sorry it took me so long to respond to this! :'D I've got finals coming up, so teachers are throwing tests at us before then like crazy. XD))
The roan mare's ears flicked toward Esterellita, turning her body slightly so that she could more easily view her. A grin spread across her face, listening to her spin the tale of her own life... or at least what the younger mare could think of at the moment. It felt like it had been an eternity since she had met another loner that was friendly. Aside from Constantine and August, all of them seemed quiet and withdrawn, so a happier persona was quite welcoming to hear. "I'll let you know, but it takes a lot to give me a headache, so I don't think we'll have a problem with that." Little Bird joked, flashing her a warm smile and laughing softly over the sound of the rain hammering down on their small cave. "And I quite like clovers myself. Something about rich, green ones is just heavenly. Apples and other fruit are a nice treat as well if I ever find any." At her next question, Little Bird hesitated, pondering on how she had become a Ranger or rather who had made her into one. Her father had been such a strong influence in her life, and having only died months ago, it was still hard for her to think about him. "I don't mind at all. My father and mother were both Rangers, so I sort of inherited the position as well. I was taught how to run and fight as soon as I was able to keep my hooves under me. I haven't really known anything else besides what it means to be a Ranger." She explained, looking out at the rain as it poured down at the mouth of the cave.
Her life had been a relatively easy one until recently. Though her own mother had left her as a foal, her father had quickly compensated for the loss of her. He had trained her to become the best fighter she could be and would have sworn to anyone that she was just as good of a Ranger as any of the stallions that were also Rangers. The two of them had been inseparable even if he had been a little harsh during the hours of training she had to go through before he was satisfied with her work. She'd do it all again if it meant she could have one last moment with him. "So what do you do, Esterellita? Are you a lurker, messenger, or whatever other else might be out there?" Little Bird asked, looking back at her with a curious expression. She loved learning about the different jobs and herds that made up the land of Chevalin. She supposed some part of her liked to know what sort of opportunities were out there, to know what other horses are doing with their lives and how she might be able to help them, but she did hope that Esterellita didn't think she was being too nosy. A lot of other potential acquaintances had been chased off by her questions, and she'd hate to lose another especially another loner.

(((Ugh, don't you hate it when teacher's do that? Its fine, I can understand completely. School is being crazy for me too xD Sorry for my late and short reply)))
Esterellita smiled encouragingly as Little Bird answered her question. She quite liked this mare indeed, she hadn't met another loner in a long time or a mare who didn't chase her away upon finding out Esterellita was flirting with the mare's crush or mate. "I'm a messenger," she answered to Little Bird's question. "Mostly I just wander around, cheer up people when I can." She added and smiled. Another boom of thunder caused her to turn her head toward the cave. Her ears perked as a flash of lightning scattered across the cave floor and a crash of thunder shortly afterwords. "¡Dios míos! This storm must be on its period or something." she joked. "How much longer do you think it'll last?" She asked Little Bird as she turned to look at her. Now Esterellita was no psychic, but she thought she could sense a growing friendship between the two of them. Or at least she hoped so, she didn't really have any true friends.

((lol! It's absolutely awful! XD It's quite alright, and I hope school settles down for you soon. <3 ))
Little Bird nodded at the younger mare's response. She had had a feeling that she was a messenger and not a thief or lurker. Most of them thought little of the Rangers, but the messengers were generally friendly. She didn't often get the chance to speak to other loners, besides the meetings at the Great Pine, but everyone dispersed pretty quickly after those were over most of the time. "Oh really? That's what I probably would have done as well if I weren't a Ranger. I think if I remember correctly I've heard of messengers trained to become Rangers before." Little Bird pondered aloud, thinking of her father's teachings. She could have sworn she had heard him say something about Rangers taking on messengers as apprentices before. "Everyone needs to be cheered up every now and again. That's nice of you to do." Little Bird thought of her own hidden feelings of her father's recent death that she had been hiding so deeply. She was a Ranger! She was supposed to be the one who protected and comforted others not the other way around! At another loud clap of thunder, the roan mare turned her head to the cave opening, shaking her head at the sight of the storm. She laughed softly at Esterellita's joke, nodding in agreement. "Seriously, it is definitely not happy with something." She thought for a minute, gauging how long they had been sitting and how large the storms had been. "Well, it looked to be a rather large storm cloud, but we've been in here for awhile. Maybe the storm will have passed by sunset." Little Bird guessed, though she shrugged her shoulders with a grin. "It's hard to tell, but at least we're making good conversation. I can't say I've had any decent to talk to in a long time to be honest. I'm surprised I'm able to speak at all after having been silent for so long." Little Bird joked, chuckling before she turned her attention back to the mare beside her. "So how does being a messenger work exactly? I've never really had an in depth conversation with one before." Little Bird loved to learn about others and how they worked. She had found that it helped her with her own job. Not to mention that it was pretty interesting to learn about others' ways of life.

((it has some, though social life and dance life has not. -.- but you know, its what I love and do XD Hope it settles down for you too!))
She laughed at Little Bird's little joke. Then pondered some on the roan mare's question. No one had ever asked how her "job" worked before. She never really gave it that much thought to be honest. "Well, its in the name. We deliver messages, some do it with a price. Whether it be for some jewelry, a feather, some even ask for an alliance. So I have heard at least. Me, I don't ask for much. Usually a promise not to bully me if we ever run into each other again." She looked over at the storm, smiling at some of her memories. "There was this one time," she giggled and looked back at Little Bird. Then leaned closer as if she were about to spill some juicy gossip. "I had to deliver a message for a lover of some Olde member." Her eyes shown bright with excitement. She had never told anyone of her adventures because it wasn't her business to tell, but that didn't mean she wasn't dying to tell someone about at least one of them. She giggled again and sighed, "Oh they were so in love. Really a cute couple, though if you asked me, some of the messages I wasn't comfortable telling the other one. But I guess, if its for your corazón, then who am I to stand in the way? Anyways, for about a week I sent the Olde stallion and his lover messages to each other back and forth and back and forth." She rolled her eyes, "I was very tired and getting impatient. Which is why I pestered them so much about just meeting each other. Well one day, I finally convinced them to finally set a meeting point so that they may stop sending the messages and finally see each other in person again. I haven't heard from the two since, but I like to believe that they are happily in love." She smiled sadly at the thought, as she had looked off out at the cave again with a far away look in her eye.
She remember her own love, which was a few years ago. How his eyes sparked when he saw her, how sweet his smile was. How she treasured the moments when he would hold her, when he would quickly kiss her cheek. It did not last sadly and her heart pained with sadness at the thought of him. Stop it Esterellita, you know why you can't have love. Might as well stop thinking about it before you go and cry again. Especially in front of a stranger, I don't want to drag her into my past troubles, she thought as she scolded herself. Esterellita turned towards Little Bird with a slit cock of her head, "Any adventures you would like to share?" she asked with a smile. Pretending as if her previous thoughts had not at all been thought of.

((lol it's important to do the things you love. ^-^ And thank you~ ))
Little Bird turned her ears in Esterellita's direction, focusing on her response rather than the rumbling storm outside their small shelter. A flash of lightening was soon followed by a loud clap of thunder overhead. This storm was certainly a nasty one for sure. Hopefully, it would go by pretty quickly, but at least she had someone to talk to, and someone nice at that. She couldn't count how many times she had run into strangers who had been less than friendly about unwelcome visitors. It also helped with her growing loneliness. Not that she was desperate for anyone's attention, but traveling alone was growing old very quickly. "Really? Some of them ask for things like that? It would be hard for me to give up any of my jewelry or things for a message, but I suppose if I really wanted to make sure it got somewhere, I would be willing to pay just about anything." She said, chuckling quietly. The Ranger didn't carry any of her treasures with her, but she had a secret spot where she kept all of her human artifacts that she had found around the city: jewels, strange rocks, books, dolls. It wasn't a very large collection, but everything there was treasured by her. As the mare beside her giggled and leaned in closer to her as if there were someone who might hear their conversation, Little Bird couldn't help but lean closer as well, training her ears to catch every word that spilled through Esterellita's mouth. A grin pulled up the corners of her lips as the younger mare told her tale. "That's quite the love story. Hopefully it worked out for them. I can't say that I've ever had someone that close before, but it's nice to hear that love still exists somewhere out there. It's obviously nowhere near me though." Little Bird joked, seeing the distant look in Esterellita's eyes. Maybe the messenger was closer to her own story than Bird thought.
As the limelight turned back on her, she pondered briefly on her adventures. None of them were really spectacular, but they were at least interesting... to her at least. Bird could only hope that Esterellita would find them as interesting as she did. "Well, there was this one time that my father and I were traveling through the Riddle Mountains, and we heard this god-awful screech. We ran to see if there were a horse in trouble to find one of those flower-headed moose's calf. The little thing was crying so loud that I was really surprised that a cougar hadn't come along to eat it. That was about the time that my father was trying to push me back down the path that we had come on. I was incredibly confused, so I didn't move. That little Perditim Moose calf came running at us with its jaws wide open, and those fangs might be small when they are that young, but they are definitely sharp. So we spent the rest of our time on the mountain running away from that hungry calf until its mother finally came along." Little Bird giggled at the fond memory, remembering how her father had been there for her even if the danger was only a little moose calf. 'Now he's gone.' She thought with a quiet sigh, but she quickly let her smile return as she turned her brown eyes back on the mare laying beside her. "So if you ever run into one of those, don't let it's cute looks fool you. They are not friendly at all."
