To the Rescue savannauni 's Aragon and blueunicornj13 's Ryder Setting: During the war between Olde and the Bachelors
Ryder galloped through the fighting horses, dodging them as best he could as he looked for the wounded. He had lost his match with the Bachelor king, sentencing him to tend to the horses that got hurt as the war went on. A cold rain fell on them, soaking their pelts and blinding them from incoming blows. Ryder winced when a large stallion stumbled into him, almost knocking the brown paint off of his hooves. The other stallion gave him a panicked look, unsure as to whether he was a friend or foe, but when his eyes drifted to the herbs in his mouth. It was quite clear that he was there to help and not fight. Ryder gave the horse a small, awkward nod. What was he supposed to say? Go get 'em? That stallion might hurt one of his friends that happened to be fighting on the Olde's side. All of this was much too confusing, and he feared it would only get worse when the war as over. How could any horse make it out of a war without any injuries? It was an impossible quest that the Olde's dictator had given them in his hopes to eradicate the Exiles from his herd or possibly from the entirety of Chevalin. Vasska viewed them as a plagued that only needed to be gotten rid of and not helped. The Exiles were useless in his eyes, and Ryder couldn't subject his family to his whims. Ryder let out a snort of displeasure, returning his attention to the battleground around him. It was then that he caught sight of a familiar red pelt. His blue eyes widened in shock as the mare laid in the mud, wounded. Ryder forced his legs to move forward, gaining speed until he came to a halt at the young mare's side. "Aragon? Are you alright?" He asked, looking down at one of the friends he had made during the journey they had made to Olde.

| Aragon | The combination of rain, blood, and mud was enough to make aragon shiver. She had fallen in battle and left to be trampled by Olde and bachelor scum. A few horses 'danced' over her body, every time she flinched but luckily none of them had stepped on her. The sound of battle cries and hooves splashing in the mud seemed more and more obnoxious. Aragon furrowed her eye brows and picked up her head as she looked over to Ryder. Shocked has stared at him. "R-Ryder?" Was the only thing that came to mind. Snapping back to what was going on she had been nearly choked out and trampled off before being left to die. "Not exactly." She said "can you help me get off this field?" She asked him not to keen on being squashed.

Ryder's blue eyes wandered over the young mare's pelt, looking for where she had been injured, but mud and gunk covered her coat, masking any signs of blood. At her shocked expression, the brown paint let a small chuckle escape him. "Yeah, it's me. Long time no see," he said, trying his hardest to lighten the mood slightly though his tone held obvious strain. His mane was knotted and muddy from not having the time or energy to properly care for it, and all of the running through the rain had left his pelt quite dirty. He couldn't imagine that he smelt very desirable either. At Aragon's request, Ryder nodded, trotting around to her other side. "I'll help you up, and you can lean on me if you are able to walk," he agreed. He used his head and neck to help lift the smaller mare onto her hooves, praying that she wasn't hurt bad enough that she couldn't walk. He could probably carry her on his back though she was just about as big as he was. It would be strenuous if so, but he'd certainly do anything to get one of his friends off of this bloody battlefield. "Let's go over to where the foals are being watched. It's a lot safer over there, and I'll be able to get a better look at your injury."

The mare managed to stand thanks to Ryder's help. She leaned heavily against him and nodded, not wanting to waste any energy she might have left. Aragon managed to do her best following Ryder's stride. She also managed to catch a glimpse of one of the fights between a large Bachelor and a small Olde. The fight was still strong plenty of horses were up right and still attacking. Creating a nervous feeling in the pit of her stomach, she didn't want either side to win this fight, after all they would only create more chaos in the herds.
She gave a slight shake of her head and focused on moving foreword. "Ryder where's Effie?" She asked curiously not seeing the mares coat in the battle field.

Ryder helped Aragon to her hooves and offered his shoulder for the smaller mare to lean on. They walked slowly toward their destination on the outskirts of the brawling horses. He squinted through the rain and mud, trying to see if he could spot his son's pelt. "It's not much further," he assured her with a small nod. His ears tilted in Aragon's direction as her curious tone broke through the noise of the fighting going on around them. A frown etched itself onto his face as his blue eyes glanced over at the red roan mare leaning on him. "I saw her not too long ago and tended to some of her wounds. I'm... not entirely sure where she is at the moment." Ryder admitted. Looking out onto the battlefield, he tried to see if he could spot her familiar grey and white pelt, but the mud and rain that covered everyone's pelts masked any signs of familiarity.
When they arrived at the edge of the fighting, Ryder walked a few more horse lengths from the battlefield, making sure they wouldn't get trampled on by anyone. "We can stop here. It should be safe enough this far away." He said as he came to a stop, ready to help Aragon lower herself to the ground once more. The ground here wasn't a churned up by hooves, so mud shouldn't be that much of an issue. The cold drops of water that fell from the sky dripped down his muddy coat, washing away some of the gunk that covered his legs. His eyes wandered to the foals that huddled in a small group nearby. A particular grey and white coated colt stood out from the rest of them. Leif and the other foals were looking out at the ongoing war, and Ryder had to bite his lip in order not to tell the mares that were watching them to take them further away. They shouldn't have to watch this. They were foals for unicorn's sake. Ryder put the small bundle of herbs he had on the ground, opening it up to see what herbs he still had. Nodding at his stock of herbs, the brown paint returned his attention to Aragon. "Alright, show me where you're hurt." Ryder said in a comforting tone.

Aragon followed Ryder's gaze to the battle field in time to see another horse fall with a sickening splash. She looked away as she saw the other horse attack the fallen one.
The arabian mare tuned out the noise and focused on the space Ryder was guiding her to. With a sigh she dropped herself to the ground. "It's mostly my side." She said "the brute attempted to choke me out then struck out at my ribs and attempted to turn me into the ground. It was quite lovely" she ended with a sarcastic tone. She looked over and saw some of the foals watching the battle "if they get to close they might get caught in the fight." She mumbled.

Ryder nodded and looked at Aragon's side, examining for any serious damage. Besides for a large bruise and a few scrapes, it didn't appear to be anything serious, but Ryder knew that there could be many more things wrong with her: internal bleeding, bruised organs, broken ribs. Thoughts of a diagnose swam through his mind as the rain fell on both of them. "It sounds like it was quite lovely," he said in an equally sarcastic tone, but a grin pulled at the corners of his lips. "Your side is pretty bruised from the looks of it, and you might have a bruised or fractured rib which is why it hurts so badly." Ryder explained, turning his head to look at his small pile of herbs. He picked out a couple and placed one in front of Aragon. "Eat that one. It's ginger root. It might not taste very good, but it'll knock out a lot of the pain. This one is aloe, and it'll keep your wounds from getting infected." Ryder said, holding the aloe leaf in his mouth. He bit the plant in half, letting some of the juice come out of it. The brown paint slathered the leaf's juice on Aragon's scrapes, making sure to be as gentle as he could with her wounds.
His blue eyes drifted over to the foals who were still watching the ongoing war with interest. "I don't think the horses that are watching them will let them get too close. I'll go over there and get them if they do though." He said around the leaf in his jaws. "I hope this war doesn't hurt Leif too badly. This is too much for any foal to see." A frown etched itself onto his face as he watched his son for a moment more. "I don't think you've ever met him, have you? Leif, I mean. I'll have to introduce you two after all of this is over." Ryder said, returning his attention to lathering Aragon's wounds with the juice from the aloe leaves.

Aragon listened to Ryder and nodded, getting the just of it as 'this is gonna hurt like hell'. Aragon watched as he pulled out all the herbs in a little shock. She had no idea that he knew so much about medicine and even had a the right herbs to use. Aragon did as instructed and ate the ginger root, she made a face as she chewed showihg her displeasure about eating the bitter root. She didn't have much time to noice the after taste as Ryder stared using the aloe. Aragon tensed up from shock then realized what he was doing and did her best to stay still and not flinch as the drops his her side. The little mare noticed Ryder was talking and tried to catch up on what he was saying as she had tuned some of the beginning out. Aragon followed their states out to the battle. A few more horses were down on their sides, heaving as they tried to breath. Aragon searched for Vasska's coat but didn't see anything then she looked for Cain and found him battling a new rival. "As sad as it seems this war is not the worst thing he will see in his life." She said quietly. Aragon looked back to Ryder, "No I don't think I ever got the chance," her tone changed from morbid to a little bit more perky "I'd love to meet him later." "Which herd do you think'll win?" She asked Ryder as she set her eyes on the battle field desperately wanting to know who was ahead in the fight.

Ryder sighed quietly. He knew that the war probably wasn't going to be the worst thing that his son would see in his life, but Ryder would make sure that he tried his hardest to make sure that it was. There was some sort of fatherly instinct inside of him that told him to go get Leif and get him as far from this war as possible, but Ryder was needed here. He had to take care of the wounded and make sure that Effie was still safe. "I can only it will be. He's just so young. Maybe he won't remember much of it." Ryder said, trying to be optimistic about the whole situation. As he worked on Aragon's wounds, his blue eyes wandered over to the battlefield. He wondered where his mate was amongst this mess, and what had become of his half-brother Bryce? Even though Ryder had technically disowned him because of the fight they had had while still on the island of Olde, Ryder couldn't help but worry about his whereabouts. They were brothers after all even after all that had gone down between them. Ryder glanced down at the ragged scar that lined his chest and part of his neck. Maybe they would be able to mend whatever was left of their relationship after all of this. He returned his attention to the present as Aragon's voice rose above the sounds of battle. "It's hard to say. The Bachelors were raised to fight since they were born, so if I had to guess, I would say that the odds are in their favor." Ryder guessed, though it was difficult to imagine that there would really be a winner to this war. Both sides would lose horses, so he couldn't really say that there would be a winner. "I just hope that we'll finally be able to figure out where we belong in this craziness." He rubbed the rest of the aloe leaves' juice on Aragon's wound and tossed the plant to the ground. "All finished. I don't think you'll be able to fight anymore at least for awhile, though I'd imagine that could be a good thing."

"Eh true enough." Aragon said watching the war. "That might be true but Vasska is determined to win this." She said "Plus there's something off about him. When we talked he seemed sure he was going to win, he wasn't arrogant or over confident he made up his mind plus I'm sure the idiot thinks the unicorns blessed him." She said and made a disgusted face.
Aragon looked to Ryder now. "I'm not sure out herd will truly belong anywhere for awhile." She said quietly. Once Ryder was done Aragon moved to a more up right position and flicked her ears foreword. "Eh maybe you're right." she said and managed to stand up. "oh man that hurts." she said before stretching her front then back legs.

Ryder nodded, looking over at the strawberry roan mare. "You were able to speak with Olde's leader? I was actually paired up with the Bachelor's leader during some sort of practice match he held before the war began. He seemed pretty darn determined too to win this war." He said, looking out over the fighting horses. All of the horses' pelts were filthy with blood and mud, making it near impossible to tell one horse from another. It was a miracle that they weren't all fighting the wrong herd at this point. Ryder chuckled softly with a shrug of his shoulders. "Cain was a bit odd too. A different kind of odd, one that makes you feel really nervous like he knows something about you. I bet Vasska does think those unicorns have his back in all of this." The brown paint shook his head. He had been brought up with tales of unicorns from his mother, but they had only been that. A tale that she had told him before bed, something to keep him entertained during their long journeys over the Southern island.
Ryder fell silent, listening to the sound of shouts and screams on the battlefield for a moment before he responded to Aragon's remark. "I'm afraid that might be true. The Southern island can't sustain an entire herd right now, and the other two herds don't exactly like us, so I can't see them letting us stay without some sort of payment like we already have with the Bachelors." Ryder sighed, shaking his head at the thought of the horrible deal that had been made. Ryder glanced back over in time to see Aragon rise to her hooves, stretching out her legs. "I think laying down might be best for right now. At least for a little while longer while the wounds close up. Plus, it might be a little more comfortable." He suggested though he knew that Aragon wasn't one to take orders, and it wouldn't hurt his feelings if the mare didn't take his suggestion.

Aragon looked back to Ryder and nodded. "Yes, I was paired up for the spar but he offered me a position to fight in the war still, although I did not last long." She said. "Cain?" She asked clarifying it was the leader. "He's such a snake." She mumbled. Finally Aragon had had enough of watching the war. "Weird.." She said thinking about that "Oh unicorns don't even get me started. He kept going on and on and on about the unicorns and how they wont accept any herd but the Olde herd. I swear it was worse to hear him talk than to fight him. What kind of gods would let him live? I wish he could get hit with some lightning." She grumbled as she spoke about the Olde king.
"Yay more time to spend at the bachelors land." She said with sarcastic joy. "They've already got our leader what else could they take?" She looked over to him and sat down awkwardly. "Yes Ryder sir." She joked before smiling at him.

Ryder listened to Aragon as the young mare spoke of her spar with the Olde king. He thought he would be the only unfortunate one to be paired up with the likes of a leader. "You lasted longer than some. I can assure you that. I decided to take myself out of the fighting portion of the war. I'd rather help the wounded than end up hurt myself." He said with a shrug of his shoulders. "Plus, I wanted to be able to make sure that Leif and Effie were still safe throughout the war. Make sure I can get to either of them if I need to." A small chuckle escaped him at her rants over the Olde leader. Rain fell steadily onto them, soaking them to the bone with cold water. "Some things about the unicorns I believe but worshiping them like they are gods when they haven't been seen in hundreds of years isn't exactly how I would be living my life." Ryder's mother had told him many stories of the unicorns and the lands across the shark-filled waters. "I just hope this war is over as quickly as possible. I can't stand seeing so many horses hurting like this, and I definitely can't stand all of these uncertainties and dangers we have been facing lately."
His blue eyes glanced over at the roan mare, seeing her sit down at his suggestion. Her sarcastic remarks made a half-smile appear on his face, pulling up one corner of his mouth. "I don't know what else they could take. Our freedom I suppose, but at the moment, we don't exactly have a lot of that to take either." His mind whirled with possibilities of what could happen to the Exiles and what the other herds could possibly take from them: their friends and family, any sense of hope that they might have left. A snort escaped him, and Ryder shook his head clear of the troublesome thoughts of the future that might not even be true. Who knew? Maybe all of this would end today with the end of the war. As long as his family and herd was safe, Ryder could stand a few more months of this island so that their own home could have time to regrow. "Nevertheless, I suppose we might be one step closer to finding out after all of this bloodshed is over."

The young arabian mare grinned "I'm just crazy enough to try and fight." she said proud of herself. Aragon looked up at the sky and wrinkled her muzzle feeling rain drops hitting it. "I think unicorns are conceded." Aragon said hearing Ryan talk about them. "I mean, just because horses disagree doesn't mean you shun them and throw them out, or disappear leaving them alone helpless till they realize what to do." She said and shrugged a little. Aragon looked to the battle field and watched quietly, seeing Cain and Vasska facing each other. She perked up more realizing this battle could end the war.
"You know what they can't take?" She asked him with and eyebrow raised. "loners." She said. "If the bachelor herd forces us to join with them 100 percent I'm leaving." She said seriously. "I'm running back to the southern island, it could at least sustain a few horses the way I see it." She said with a far away look in her eyes, looking past the horses on the battle field. She blinked a few times, exiting her trance to look back to Ryder. "Very true." She said, waiting to find out who the victor would be this time. It seemed like the Bachelors were in the lead but there was no true way to tell, after all the Olde could be a tough crowd when they wanted to be.

Ryder chuckled lightly at the young mare's words, looking down at her where she sat in the grass away from the battlefield. The rain soaked his mane, making its curly locks stick to his neck. "True, I suppose if they really were all high and mighty, they should have stayed to keep the peace instead of run away at the first sight of danger." Ryder agreed with a little shrug of his own. Seeing Aragon's eyes drift back to the fighting, Ryder's followed her gaze, seeing the Bachelor and Olde leader facing off amidst the rest of the war. Maybe this would finally all end; hopefully, it would at least. The brown paint's ears swiveled back toward Aragon as she broke his concentration on the fighting horses. His brows raised in surprise, but he nodded silently. He and Effie had thought about becoming loners at one time. Running away from all of this madness for the safety of their son, but after all of this, Ryder didn't know if he could bring himself to do so. "That's true. They don't have any say on what loners do or don't do. And that may be a good idea, for some at least. The Exiles would be even weaker in this if everyone off and left to become loners." Ryder said, shrugging his shoulders. A half-smile appeared on his face as his eyes swept over Aragon. "But if that's what you believe to be right, I'm not going to stop you. Let me know beforehand though if that's the decision you make. Maybe I can make a little care-package for your stay there on the Southern island." Ryder offered. It wasn't his place to stop her if she wished to leave, but he could at least try to ensure her safety while she was gone. Ryder turned his head back to look at the battling horses, praying silently for the safety of his mate as she fought and the end of all of this war.
TIME SKIP: To after the war
It had been quite the busy week after the war had ended for the Exiles. The Bachelor and Olde herds had left, leaving them at the end of the Summer Fields to patiently await whenever they decided it would be time to end this stalemate. Ryder had spent most of his time tending to the wounded, checking for infections and reapplying bandages. Of course, he had taken the time to marry the love of his life at the place they had met on this island. It had been a beautiful ceremony with their closest friends and family. It still felt odd to say that he was a married man, but it had also been one of the best decisions he had ever made. Not to mention that only days later, Khala had come to him, offering him a spot as a High Guard. Ryder had been baffled that he of all horses had been chosen for such a position, but he had gratefully taken it, seeing it as an opportunity to better protect his family and his herd.
Ryder walked around his herdmates, weaving around them as he looked for anyone that might need herbs or any other sort of medical treatment. Leif had been playing with a few of the other foals not too far away, and on occasion, he took the chance to sneak a peek at the rambunctious colt, smiling when he saw him happily running around as if there hadn't been a war recently. Ryder stopped when he spotted a familiar roan pelt, and he trotted over, feeling the colored beads Effie had given him bounce lightly on his withers. "Aragon! How are you today? Are your wounded healing nicely?" Ryder asked her, grinning as he came to a stop in front of her.
