An RP between Ginger-Goddess's Ghost and Mariahwhy's Tobias Current Timeline: Year 398 (possible time jumps throughout)
When a colt turned 13 there was no ceremony as with The Marking or The 17th Year. There was no big fanfare, no congratulations. Typically other horses didn't even keep track of your birthday unless you told them. Except the leader. The leader somehow always knew. Perhaps the mares remembered the days of their foals' births, and would whisper to the ruling stallion when an important year had been reached. Either way, Tobias knew. He knew he was 13. He'd felt 13 for years, but he knew that now, with the new moon in the mid of summer, he was 13. And that meant, while he wasn't yet ready to join the ranks of a stallion and choose a brood, he was finally able to take the first step to that point. He would pick his path to train under, and be assigned a mentor. The youngling had spent his short life watching the stallions, and had flip-flopped back and forth about whether he wanted to be part of the infantry or the scavengers. Each had it's perks. Deep down he wanted to be Infantry. He wanted to be on the front-line of the battle field... if they ever were to go to battle. He wanted to be right at the leader's side, hooves and teeth bared. But he watched the infantry train, their muscles rippling beneath their large hides. He wasn't the right build, he knew. Had always known. Spotted thin legs and body, more built for speed than strength, were those of a scavenger. Both of his older brothers, Ishmael and Abel, still in training themselves, were on the Scavenger path. But the leopard appaloosa had eventually talked himself into the role he was destined to play. He watched the Infantry during their mundane, every day tasks of guarding the broods and patrolling the herd. There had not been a war in any of their lifetimes, and there didn't seem to be one looming, so an army wasn't currently needed. All they could do was mull around, hoping to one day see the excitement of battle. But the Scavengers were always at work. Always finding new broods, raiding herds and loners. And they still learned to fight, just in a more stealthy way. Tobias could live with that. The youngling waited impatiently, milling about the herd and casting glances towards Klaus throughout the day of his 13th birthday. It seemed the leader would never approach him to ask him his path and give him his mentor. Did he know? Should he tell him he had come of age? As the sun began to set he vowed that, at nightfall, he would tell him. But leader always seemed to know, and just as Tobias was about to head his way the black stallion began towards him. Wide, red eyes and a twitching, anxious hide greeted the leader, and he couldn't help but blurt out his wanted rank immediately. Klaus, unfazed by the colt's excitement, nodded lightly, and listed three names of mentors he could choose from. But after the first name Tobias didn't need to listen to the others. Ghost.
One of the Elites! Tobias could not believe his ears. Very few younglings were given an Elite mentor. It was largely due to the small number of Elites, but immediately Tobias' mind told him it was because those foals weren't worthy. But he was. Klaus saw greatness in him and would give him the only mentor able to extract his potential. With head held high he set off on his first task as a trainee - to find his mentor and let him know that he had picked him as his teacher. Eyes and ears whipping back and forth he found the silver appaloosa in record time. Without hesitation he trotted right up to the large stallion, posture exhibiting every bit of the pride he currently felt. "Excuse me," he announced himself. "My name is Tobias. Klaus has assigned you as my mentor. " He gave a shallow bow, gaze never leaving Ghost's face. His red eyes scanned those of the other, trying to determine how the stallion felt about his new charge. "I am ready to start my first lesson whenever you are."

The setting sun painted the sky in deep orange and red hues, casting a soft golden glow across the summer fields. Inhaling deeply, the massive stallion savored the moment of peace and quiet, a rare luxury in his line of work. He knew it wouldn't last long though... Moments like this never did, but that's what made them something to look forward to. A young voice spoke up from somewhere near the spotted stallion, shattering the silence. "Excuse me, My name is Tobias. Klaus has assigned you as my mentor. " Ghost turned to face the young horse, frustration and annoyance plastered clearly on his face. Mentor...? He vaguely remembered Klaus coming to him a few weeks ago asking if he would be willing to mentor one of the young colts...The silver stallion had been in such a hurry that he'd just nodded in agreement. Now he was silently berating himself for not paying more attention... He studied the spotted colt's proud expression for a moment, flicking an ear forward as the youngling spoke once more. "I am ready to start my first lesson whenever you are."
Ugh...Well at least the colt seemed motivated, and he definitely had guts. That was more than Ghost could say for half of the younger stallions in the herd. Sighing heavily, he answered the black and white horse. "Your first lesson, eh?" The older stallion paused for a moment, wracking his brain for what sort of lessons he should teach the colt. Unfortunately for him, he kept drawing blanks. "Well, I have other duties to oversee tonight, so any formal training will have to wait until I'm not busy. You are more than welcome to tag along and observe though. Maybe you'll even learn something in the process." The stallion paused, snorting softly before continuing once more. "Of course, it is rather late, and I imagine you're rather tired and should probably get some sleep. It's up to you, kid." Ghost nodded slightly, feeling rather pleased with himself and his solution. He'd use the opportunity as a test, as well as a chance to feel out the colt and decipher his expectations. Slowly, he began walking toward the Riddle Mountains, glancing behind casually to see if Tobias would follow.

The youngling had to quickly remind himself to keep a calm face before it gave away his disappointment. Observe? He'd done nothing but observe all his life! He spent all of his time watching the older stallions train, and now he was ready to get in on some action. But, he supposed, there was more to being a scavenger than pillage and plunder. And if getting through some boring stuff was what it'd take to become the best scavenger that he could be... well, he'd just have to play along. He inhaled to speak as Ghost paused, but then the stallion continued and Toby closed his mouth.
Get some sleep? As if! From years of trying to tag along after stallions Toby knew very well when someone was trying to get rid of him. But no way was he going to just go to bed on his first day of training! He smiled at the turned back of his mentor, then bounded forward to place himself alongside Ghost. While he had begun to grow into himself he was still rather small and gangly, especially compared to the draft cross - and had to take two trotting steps for every step the older appaloosa took. "I'm not tired at all," he piped up, smiling at Ghost, then turning to the mountain range on the horizon. The setting sun glinted off of his red eyes, illuminating the determination behind his gaze. The youngling really did feel like he could go the rest of his life without sleep if it meant spending every minute training. Every second of his life had led up to this moment, and he never wanted it to end. Not until he became a full-fledged Scavenger, anyway.
"What are we going to do? Are you going to search for some new broods? Are there some Loners on the island that you are going to raid?" While he couldn't stem his curiosity, Toby did try to limit his questions. He was eager to learn, but he didn't want to seem too much like a little foal seeking it's mother's love and attention. Looking in front of them he tried to decipher where they were headed. The mountains maybe? To the edge of the fields to meet with some other scavengers? He could not guess, but many possibilities ran through his mind. Each and every one of them seemed like a treat to him. He was with his mentor - an elite no less - and while his formal training hadn't yet started he would still count this as his first day on the job. He was finally on the path to greatness.

Ghost sighed heavily as the colt began listing off prospects for their "mission". Tobias was eager..a bit too eager, perhaps. but it wasn't the worst thing a youngling could be. The spotted stallion remembered a time when he had been an over eager colt himself, ready to take on the world with all his delusions of grandeur, and well look at him now? He was a well respected member of the herd, and an Elite. Maybe there was hope for this colt yet.
"Well, we won't be doing anything as grand or exciting as a raid. There have been rumors of a Loner stallion who has been planning on kidnapping some of our mares. Earlier this morning, two of the broods went missing. I, along with a small party of scavengers, have been placed in charge of returning them to the herd using whatever means necessary. I honestly doubt any loner's were involved, and this is just a routine escape attempt, but I can't blame Klaus for being cautious. The last thing we need is for some young, jumped up loner to think he just waltz into our home and take our mares. There is a small camp where the others are waiting for me .." He paused briefly before continuing again. "..For us, I mean. We will begin there. I will need you to be alert, and be prepared for anything. Realistically there shouldn't be any issues...but I need you to be ready just in case."
He glanced at Tobias, trying to gauge the foal's reaction. He hoped his young apprentice would begin to understand that not everything was exciting or glorious, but he had a feeling it would be some time before the black and white colt would even begin to come to terms with that fact.
