So the War had been brought to a stalemate, had it? Alabaster’s frown deepened and he continued to stare with a mixture of hope and disbelief at the rippling surface of the prayer pool. The Olde had regrouped within their territory and he felt a slim sense of comfort at having returned home, but too many troublesome thoughts stampeded through his mind for him to feel totally at ease. He had not partaken in the fighting or healing missions of the bloody event, not this time, for his duties had called him elsewhere. He had overseen a few small activities but nothing serious. He wondered, briefly, if it was because of the troublesome proceedings he’d managed to rack up over the course of the past year that had led Vasska to appoint him to such trivial matters. Not that he had wanted to charge head on at sweaty, blood stained warriors in a fight to the death anyway. And where had the whole shenanigan gotten them anyway? Wounded and weakened. Obscura had been taken captive by their enemies and he had yet to hear if anyone else had suffered a similar fate. His niece, at least, still lived. She too had been captured by those savage bachelor stallions, but he had set out on a mission to rescue her and another mare just before war had broken out. He sighed, his breath causing the eerily green glowing water before him to ripple and distort his reflection. The snowy colored equine finished paying his respects to the unicorns and then lifted his long, elegant neck, turning away from the pool and trotting distractedly down a city road, cracked and worn and spotted with persistent vegetation. Customarily the Olde herd spent its days in the city and the nights in the valleys and forests of the natural world. Today was no different. Alabaster cantered past a herd mate or two as he headed for rundown recreational park, overgrown with grasses and wildflowers that made for nice grazing. He slowed and began to amble leisurely among the flora, stepping agilely over the remnants of what might once have been a gazebo. A distant sound caught his attention and the stallion lifted his head from a patch of clover, squinting at a spotted coat some distance away. Bones, he realized. Oh yes. He had wanted to talk to the fellow. He’d met his daughter recently and wanted to make inquiry or two out of curiosity. He began to gallop in the gangly old horse’s direction, tossing his head as he tried to capture his targets attention. “Bones!” he called in a sing-song-y voice. “Bones!”

The trek from the sea back to the city had worn Bones out. Already stressed, Bones had all but collapsed once theyd gotten to the city, and he'd been asleep all night. Morning broke, and as the sun crept back into the sky, Bones found himself waking up to a flutter of coughing. Always in the morning he supposed. The old stallions nostrils flared, and as his coughs subsided, Bones was vaguely aware of someone calling his name. Oh god it was Alabaster. Bones could have faceplanted if he'd really wanted to. Bones lifted his head, eyes bleary with sleep, and cleared his throat.
"Yeh don' 'ave ta yell" he grumbled slightly, flipping his ragged tail as he stayed down in the grass. He looked.... well not terrible but not okay either. Then again, he rarely looked great these days. He was thin as usual, but clean and well kept, which was good. Bones had a nasty habit of forgetting to take care of himself, but with most of the herd gone and off to war, he had had some time to himself to make himself presentable, that and Addie kept nagging him about how he was. Not that he minded, it was just new and strange to him. Bones shivered in the chilly morning air, and begged for a moment that this winter would be mild, mild and not full of travel. He wasn't sure he could make it through another winter like that, he was too frail for that crap again.

Alabaster acknowledged the elder horse’s words with a frisk of his ears, still elegantly high stepping toward the spotted stallion. “How have you been doing old pal? Not still mad about last time I hope. We should just let bygones be bygones, yes?” before waiting for an answer he sped right along, carrying the discussion to another topic. It seemed quite possible he could a hold conversation with himself, seeing as the lack of interest he often invested within his palaver partner’s responses. “I met your daughter, Adjara or Adhaha is it? Briefly, while the herd congregated along the coast. She’s not too bad really. Though I’m curious, where’s her mother? Will she being staying in the Olde herd now that she knows you’re here? Oh goodness! Don’t tell me you’re going to join the Exiles! That would be most unsuitable. Especially with all their bohemian traveling and whatnot. To be honest, I don’t think a horse of your age should partake in such rigorous activities…then again; maybe it would be good for you? All that exercise. How did the two of you get separated anyway? It seems unlikely you would part without good reason. No one tells me anything! The others just gossip in their little cliques now and then, whispering about the latest happenings but I’m rarely invited and it’s not like I’d just barge into their chat without asking or anything. That would be rude! Also, I didn’t want a tainted version of your story so I figured who better to hear it from the big guy himself? Who would have known you bear such a dark past!” At long last, the snowy colored stallion paused long enough to take a breath, and coincidently, better observe his quarry. “OH GOODNESS.” A strangled gasp escaped Alabaster’s throat as he looked his herd mate up and down. Perhaps he wasn’t as scruffy as usual, but it had been quite some time since the two had last met and Alabaster was unceremoniously reminded as to Bone’s cosmetic needs. Or more like emergency. “Bone’s I assure you, I have a cure. It’s called a bath.” He said matter-a-factly. “That and a bit of extra time in the meadows to graze, you could stand to gain a few pounds!” He thought over his suggestions before brightening again at a new idea, “Ah yes! We could apply an evergreen pulp to your coat and you will smell fresh as pine!”

Bones cut Alabaster off right as the pristine white stallion finished talking. "alabaster for Unicorn's sake please just shut it for two seconds" Bones grouched. Bones pinned his ears back, almost immediately annoyed.
"Her name is Adhara. If you'd listen to someone besides yerself fer once maybe it'd stick in that thick skull'a yers" Bones growled. Bones turned. "Try observin' a bit more b'fore approachin me without even knowin' my daughters name." Bones seemed pissed off, impatient, very much unlike himself. He did not like Alabaster very much, and it was quite obvious.
"OH WOULD YEH JES' SHUT IT!" He barked hoarsely as Alabaster prattled on about how Bones looked. "I don' need yeh carryin' on abou' 'ow ah smell er 'ow ah looK!" He snapped, positively furious. "Theres this thing called im OLD AND I DONT GIVE A DAMN!" He snapped, again very much unlike himself. Bones' nostrils flared, ribs heaving with exertion from his sudden, angry outburst. He turned and started limping down the hill, frustrated and wheezy. Bones walked down the hill, coughing a bit as he did so, unused to the abrupt snapping he'd just dealt out on Alabaster. Usually, he would have felt bad about doing that, but that stallion had to learn a thing or two about being respectful. One just didnt come running up and ask questions about a horse whose name he hadnt even bothered to get right. Nor was it polite to comment on an old horses looks before any sort of idle conversation. Bones found him rude and immature, and frankly, annoying.

Alabaster was on pause for a moment, just long enough for Bone’s words to slip in one elegant ear and out the other. What little exposure he’d had around the spotted equine had given him the (mistaken) impression of a grumpy, lonely old stallion who desperately needed (And surely, secretly wanted) his help and exquisitely pleasant companionship, whether he realized it yet or not. “Come now ol’ chap.” He nickered, following right along behind the appaloosa with an unwavering persistence. “There’s a cure for everything, age included! Haven’t you ever heard of the fountain of youth? We could try and find it!” Alabaster hesitated, or maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. His mane and tail might get tangle in a bush along the journey. “On second thought, a bit of rest instead, it might ease the bags under your eyes.” But enough of beauty, he hadn’t answered any of his questions about the Adh- whatever her name was. “So your daughter…where will she be staying? I’m not so sure Vasska would be pleased if you left.” He whinnied with a shrug. “By the way…how’s my forelock look to you? The wind has battered it to badly I hope, I have a…uh…meeting later and want to look my best.” At long last the snowy white equine seemed to notice Bone's cough. "Oh...you should get that cough looked at." he said, oh so very helpfully. "It could mean your sick." Another one of his fabulous ideas came to surface. "Ah yes, my niece is a healer in training I'm sure she'd be delighted to take a look at you!"

Bones growled under his breath and kept walking, though Alabaster all too easily kept up with the hobbling elder. Eventually, Bones lurched to a stop, wheezy and very nearly breathless, and turned to face Alabaster. "Go. Away. If you INSIST on chattering do it SOMEWHERE ELSE" Bones barked, splintering off into a terrible rattling cough. Bones turned away, ears pinned back against his skull as he continued to hobble off across the meadow, thwacking his ragged tail in Alabasters face, hoping, praying that would be enough of a deterrent to get the other to leave him alone.

Alabaster wrinkled his nose and spat a few tail hairs out of his mouth. Hrmm...this was proving to be difficult...but no matter! He was up for a challenge today, it would distract him from his troubles in the very least. "Wait!" he called after Bones for no apparent reason, seeing as he held an easy trot right next to him. "Let me just spruce you up a bit!" he insisted, "I'm sure it will cheer you up. You seem to be in a rather cantankerous mood."
