Birds of a Feather poedogs 's Dawne and blueunicornj13 's Leif Time Line: Just before the war
As horses bustled around the grassy field, a grey colt watched with interest. His blue eyes studied the horses especially the ones with the x scars on their faces. He'd seen scars before, especially since both his mother and father had plenty, but he had never seen any that were so purposefully placed. Everyone around him was tense. Their body language indicted some sort of stress. Leif furrowed his brows, thinking of what could be bothering everyone. It must be something really bad. It might not be though. Maybe everyone was just playing a game where they couldn't smile. Leif frowned, mimicking the horses that passed him. His frowns quickly turned into goofy faces as he stuck out his tongue and crossed his eyes. He earned a few odd looks from the few that spotted the young colt, but he stopped as he saw another small form amongst the bigger horses. He trotted forward with his tail wagging happily. He gave the filly a toothy grin before speaking. "Hi, my name's Leif. What's yours?" He asked, tilting his head to the side. He'd only met one other foal before, and he loved spending time with horses his age though this filly looked at least a year younger than himself. Not that you could tell from his still very lanky legs.

"Eeek!" The filly jumped at the other foal's voice and fell over, her weak legs not carrying her weight. She whimpered, tears glimmering in her eyes and looked up at the grey paint foal. He was friendly? Mommy must have been right, not all of them were trying to be mean, "Daw... Dawne." She said quietly, tears falling away and replaced with a glimmer of delight. She stood up, face contorted in concentration. "Hi Lie.. Lief." She stuttered still struck with surprise that someone besides mom or dad was being nice to her. She shook her coat free of dust and nearly fell over again but caught herself in time. She'd seen the foal around occasionally. Instead of greeting him or his friend with the darker coat she hid behind her mother so as not to be scared by them.

Leif took a small step forward as the filly fell over. Tears streamed down her face which caught him off guard. He gave her a worried and confused look before she stood on shaky legs. As she introduced herself, the colt gave her another smile, wagging his tail. "Nice to meet ya, Dawne. I don't think I've seen you around before, or I would have said hi earlier," he said with a goofy grin. He looked over as another horse, this time a very large stallion, passed by them. His hooves thundering on the ground. Leif watched the horse carefully before returning his attention to the filly in front of him. "It's really strange how all these horses are running around like that. They all look so serious," he said with a frown before it quickly changed to a pleasant smile. "Do you think they're playing some sort of game where they have to keep straight faces? Should we be playing too?" Leif asked, tilting his head at the younger foal.

The young filly watched the paint, smiling now, "I don't know, but I guess I can play with you." She frowned at him, her pale eyes turning cold as ice before bursting into giggles, "I bet you'll beat me!" She laughed and looked back at the pale foal, "This is gonna be soooo hard!" She laughed and again her face contorted into a, you could call it as such, sneer before she blew up her cheeks trying to hold in the laughter.

Leif chuckled as the filly tried her hardest to keep a straight face only to burst into giggles a few moments later. "That's the fun it. Challenges are always fun!" He said with a toothy grin. As Dawne inflated her cheeks trying to hold in her laughter, Leif furrowed his brows and turned his blue eyes on Dawne. He stood stock still for several moments. His eyes stared at the other foal intensely before he, eventually, crossed them and tilted his head at an odd angle to give Dawne an odd look. Leif erupted into a fit of giggling as he uncrossed his eyes. "You're right that was really hard. I don't know how these horses keep those serious faces on for so long," he said with a shake of his head in disbelief. "So what do you normally do for fun, Dawne?" Leif asked. Whenever he played with Kale, the older colt always seemed to make sure that they played a game both of them enjoyed, so Leif figured it was something that everyone did to make things more fun for everyone.

"Oh I... I used to play hide and seek with this mare and stallion, but I don't remember them and it caused me to be alone for forever. Anything but that game." She said quietly, smile falling away. She had a fleeting thought of Kanu, "I like pretending to be a guard and chasing away grass beasts and rats." She said shyly, it was one of her most guarded "secrets". "Can we play that?"

Leif listened intently as Dawne spoke. His brows narrowed slightly at the mention of hide-and-seek and getting lost forever. "It's okay. I don't really like that game anyways. It's only fun if you have more horses to look for," he said with a chuckle. His tail wagged excitedly as a wide grin covered his face. "Really? I love that game! I wanna be a guard like my momma when I grow up, but she said pretending is all I can do for now." He explained as he bounded to the side a few steps. "We can pretend we're fighting a whole pack of grassbeasts!"

"That would be so much fun," she said as she bounded around him. "My momma's not a guard like yours but my daddy's the highest guard. I think." She smiled brightly before zooming off to tell Lena and Kanu she'd be playing with Leif. Then she ran back and took focus on an enemy in the distance. "Look! There! A thing is there! It must be a grass beast!" She pawed the air and almost fell over but managed to keep her balance. "Come help me fight him!" And she began dashing for an unseen shape.

The colt's blue eyes widened a bit in shock. "Really? That's so cool! I bet he's super strong," he said with a toothy grin. As Dawne trotted off to tell her parents something, Leif took the opportunity to look over at his own parents who were grazing nearby. He gave them a cheery smile, nodding as if to say that he had found someone to play with. The grey colt looked back when Dawne reappeared, kicking at the air. "Oh no! A grass beast! I'll help you!" Leif called out, grinning from ear to ear as he took a few galloping steps toward the unseen monster in front of them. Leif reared onto his back legs, kicking them into the air in a clumsy fashion. "You get him on that side, Dawne! We'll chase him away from the herd for sure!" Leif said in excitement, tossing his head into the air in another rear.

Yes, this was turning out lovely! Dawne could easily see the grey furry, black tufted beast getting owned by the two foal's flashing, sharp hooves! "YEAH! Let's get him!" She reared, flanking the beast and leaping directly at the spot where the terrifying creature would be. A imaginary yip, or was it not... the filly immediately stopped her antics, cocking her head to the side and pricking her ears. "Leif, Leif I heard something like a yelp or a yip. I'm scared." The filly began to worry as she always did and backed up to join her friend, pressing closely against his side in fear.
"Should I get daddy or should we try to find the beast and chase it off?" Her voice trembled a little bit and her knees knocked. The grullo blinked several times, her big blue eyes full of false courage. She was not brave, she was a coward. Maybe if they chased the beast off though she'd become a guard and wouldn't be as much a scaredy-cougar as before? The filly pondered the thoughts in seconds, waiting for her friend to make the decision. "Oh, Leif, what should we do? You know how scared I get."

Leif giggled, hopping toward the imaginary beast as they darted toward the grey furred animal's flanks. He kicked out his hooves, imagining himself slicing away at the dangerous predator as they courageously protected their herd. His ears shot forward as Dawne jumped toward where the beast would have been. The grey colt paused in his antics, seeing Dawne freeze in fear as she looked out toward the tall grass around them. Leif pricked his ears, catching the sound of something in the vegetation near them. "I think I heard something too." His blue eyes were trained on the grass ahead of them, and he only looked away for a moment when he felt Dawne press against his side. Her eyes full of fear and nervousness.
Leif tilted his head, listening for any more signs of a possible beast, but everything around them was quiet except for the occasional rustle of the grass in the breeze. He looked down at Dawne as her knees wobbled beneath her, but from the look in her eyes, he would have never guessed that she was scared. "I think we should find it and chase it off. Can you imagine how proud our parents would be if they found out that we protected the herd from a grass beast? Don't be scared, Dawne. If it's really a grass beast, I'll be there to stop it before it can get anywhere near you or the herd. Now, come on. We've got a grass beast to find." Leif said and wagged his tail excitedly as a wide grin crossed his face. The light grey foal walked slowly into the tall grass, careful to be quiet so that no one would see them leaving. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach for a moment, but the young colt quickly pushed the nervous feeling back down. They wouldn't be going that far from the herd, and he was sure that they would be able to handle the dog if they found it. It would be a piece of cake.
