" Thicker Than Water "
T h e P l o t Many years past, before orange flames licked the trees and catastrophic blazes scourged the land, reducing everything to dust and ash, there were two sisters, fraternal twins in fact by the names Miyra and Meira. Thriving within the Olde herd, they grew up together as normal fillies would. The twins were the pride and joy of their father, a well-respected advisor, and were expected to become two of the most beautiful ladies of the herd, most likely married off to future leaders or brave knights. However, before this dream could come to pass, tragedy struck. Bachelors infiltrated the Olde. Meira and her mother were taken. This broke their poor father's heart, and from then on he was never the same. Miyra, a now caring, independent mare did her best to comfort her grieving father, and at announcement of her engagement to a knight, some life seemed to return to him. But unbeknownst to them all, Miyra's new husband had darkess within his heart, and slowly corrupted his wife into a submissive, weak-minded being. Eventually, his darkness became too great, and he was banished from the herd, stealing Miyra away with him and escaping to the Exiles, where she bore him a son, Kiro. Meanwhile, Meira, indeed, became the bright, beautiful lady as was forseen, even under the cruel rule of the Bachelor brutes. Stubborn as her mother before her, she managed to escape one night, but not without evidence of her bondage. Shortly after, a filly was born to her, who she named Akira. Knowing she was exhausted and in need of shelter, she remembered the rumors circulating the Bachelors about the Exile herd's new recruits. So to there she traveled, ragged and tired, hoping to take sanctuary within her sister's new family.

{ Akira }
Slush. Slush. Slosh. "Akira..." Splish. Splash. Slush. "Akira...!" The young buckskin filly finally came to a slippery stop, sliding a few inches before raising her head and flicking her ears to the elegant mare in front of her. Soft rumbling from the passing storm could be heard faintly in the distance, the skies still grey with storm clouds. "Yes, Momma?" she answered cutely, her large, deep brown eyes twinkling. Immediately the mare's exhausted, tested expression melted into one of kindness, and she merely sighed. "What have I told you about playing in the puddles? Your mother is very tired, my love," she murmured softly, arching her long neck to nuzzle her daughter's muddy face. "Oh, I'm sorry, Momma... I just. I like seeing the water droplets. They're all so shiny and pretty. It's like I can make it rain whenever I want," she answered apologetically, lowering her ears and looking down. This produced a low, content chuckle from her mother as she lightly nipped the filly's pitch black puffs of mane sticking out every which way on the back of her neck. "Well I promise as soon as we get there, you can spend the entire evening playing in the puddles, alright?" At this, Akira perked up once more, doing a little hop of excitement on her lanky sooty black legs. "Really??" she questioned. "Yes, my dear. Now keep moving, we're almost there." Giving a slight shove to the little filly's rear with her muzzle, the mare once more tiredly strode forward with the hyper little buckskin in tow. However, the silence didn't last long. "Momma, where are we going again?" she inquired, doing her best to keep up with her mother's long strides. Gazing at the fertile land ahead, the mare smiled softly, though her eyes were solemn with past memories. "We're going to stay with your aunt for a while. Her herd can protect us from the bad horses who are following us. We will be safe there," she explained. "I have an aunt?" Akira stated excitedly, "Will there be any other foals for me to play with there? What is it like? Are they friendly?" This once more made her mother laugh at the sudden peppering of questions. "We'll just have to see when we get there." At this, Akira surged ahead, kicking up her hind hooves in anticipation. "Well come on, Momma! Let's go!" A warm smile came over the mare's lips and she picked up her pace to a trot as the two headed off into the distance.

"Momma...? Momma?! Momma! Momma wake up! Momma we're almost there, I can see the others. Please you have to get up!" Frantically pacing back and forth, Akira nudged her mother again and again, but the mare would not wake. Her stomach could be seen rising and falling, but she still remained unconscious no matter what her daughter did to try and revive her. Whinnying shrilly the young filly reared up on her back legs, hoping someone would hear her. "Somebody!! Somebody please help!!! SOMEBODY HELP US!" she wailed, her eyes welling up with tears, "Momma, please!!"

The storm clouds loomed overhead as the pale mare stared into the sky, feeling an unsettling feeling grow in her stomach. Something was wrong... Very wrong... Her cream eyes travelled to the small filly at her side fast asleep. Nothing had ever seemed to phase or trouble her daughter and the look she sometimes carried in her eyes made Miyra stirr with anxiety. Perhaps she would leave them, as her son had but the alterior option struck terror in her heart. Alternatively, she could become exactly what Koma had wanted Kiro to be... What her husband had tried to shape their son into was something Miyra couldn't allow herself to think too much about. It was for their own good, to protect themself and there was no other way to achieve it. The small filly suddenly perked awake beside her, staring into the distance so quickly it was as if she had never been asleep. "What is it.. Darling?" Miyra asked hesitantly trying to look in the direction Rika's attention was focused to. "Brother's back" the amber eyed filly sneered with a smirk and Miyra could indeed see a figure in the distance, heading in the opposite direction.
Kiro had come to visit his mother, and another filly he had met not long ago but his path was interrupted. He heard the cries of a small buckskin filly after he had passed the land bridge and was trotting in their direction, ears perked forwards strongly. He reached them panting lightly, searching the filly for injury but it was not herself she was crying out for. No, there was a mare beside her laying limply on the floor ridden with exhaustion. "What happened?" The young colt questioned, searching the ground below. "Ma'am? Are you in bad condition?" His ear twisted sideways with the sound of cantering hooves, finding his younger sister had joined them and his mother trailing close behind. "Kiro!" Miyra called out, eyes going wide as she saw the mare at their feet and the filly beside her. "S-sister..." She let out a gasped breath and kneeled beside her with incredulous eyes.

{ Akira }
Whipping around to face the incoming strangers with giant water eyes and a tear-stained face, the little buckskin filly did her best not to cry, though the tears continued to pour. "I-it's Momma! S-she just laid down a-and now she won't wake up!" she wailed, fidgeting frantically back and forth. She could only have been about four years old and was quite a gangly little thing with such a fragile frame. Just then the mare slowly opened her eyes, inhaling deeply as her consciousness flooded back to her. Carefully lifting her head, Meira extended her neck toward her distraught daughter and nickered softly. "Akira, Akira calm down...it's alright..." she uttered in a mere whisper, her throat parched from dehydration.
Immediately the filly was once more glued to her mother's side, burying her white freckled face into the thick pale mane of her mother, finally beginning to calm down. After several moments, she turned her head slightly, those warm brown eyes studying the strangers with a sense of fear but also curiosity, especially when they came to rest on the colt. He...looks like me, she thought to herself, never having come across another buckskin before.
Meanwhile, Meira turned her attention to the other mare, tears welling up in her own crystal blue eyes. "Miyra..." she murmured before turning her gaze to the young ones. "Oh Miyra...they're beautiful...," she whispered, immediately knowing the two little ones were her sister's children, for the physical resemblance and body language was all she needed, "I wish I could have been here...when they were born..."

Miyra stretched her neck down to her sister, touching her muzzle to hers when she woke up. When her sister spoke of her children, the mare glanced to her side and smiled faintly but there was something else in her expresion- Fear. "Outsiders don't belong here" the little buckskin filly sneered at the two, glaring at the tired face near her mother and then the other filly in their presence. She stepped forward from behind her mother and raised an eyebrow "Besides, this one looks like she won't even make it a couple of steps without falling over again!". When Rika had finished speaking Kiro quickly bared his teeth at her with a deep frown "Hold your tongue!" he snapped and bit her on the flank causing her to squeal and kick out at him. "Children..." Miyra added a little quietly, clearly not capable of maintaining any control of the two. "This is your aunt, Meira..." the mare's eyes travelled to the filly with a gentle smile, "and her daughter, your cousin". At that moment Kiro stepped forward and bowed his head "Nice to meet you ma'am" he greeted and then glanced to his mother who was looking around nervously... He knew exactly what that meant. "Could you help my sister and I carry some water to your mother please? It might do her good.." he nodded at Akira, turning so the scar on his eye was visible but, as he noticed, he made a quick effort to cover it with his fringe. "It's just over there, not too far.." the young colt's eyes shot a quick look at Rika, who returned him a defiant look but complied anyway.

Closing her eyes, Meira welcomed the soft caress of her sister's muzzle upon hers. It had been so long since she'd felt the tender touch of another. "I'm glad I found you here...and I am glad you are well," she mentioned lovingly before turning her attention to her unruly, rowdy niece and nephew. She couldn't help but chuckle at the duo's antics, though something about her niece...made her uneasy...though she couldn't put her hoof on it. Nevertheless, they were both her sister's children and she already considered them both dear to her heart as if they were her own.
As the attention suddenly fell on Akira's frail frame, she quickly backed up nervously, tripping over her mother's hind leg and squealing slightly as she thumped to the ground. Swiftly regaining her balance, she smiled shyly, a slight blush of embarrassment on her pale cheeks. Glancing to Kiro, she nodded her head, uttering a sweet "H-hi..." in response to his greeting. When he asked if she would help him gather water for her mother, she seemed to perk up a bit, though her movements were still quite timid. As Akira looked to her mother, Meira nodded her head tiredly, giving her permission. With this, the little filly smiled brightly and carefully made her way over to her new found cousin. Her eyes widened a bit as she noticed the scar across her eye, immediate concern plaguing the youngling's face. She wanted to ask what had happened, but seeing the way he tried to hide it, she decided it was probably better that she held her tongue. "I-I'm ready. I'll follow you," she piped up, shaking her scruffy mane back and forth a bit, causing her miniature braid to flop from one side to the other.
