Friends or Foes Sinclair and Little Bird Setting: This is set before the current objective. ^-^
The sun shone brightly on her roan pelt as she trotted through the unfamiliar lands of the Eastern island. Her brown eyes shifted over the landscape in search of predators or horses that might of danger to her. This land was filled with horses that would love to take her into their herd for their own intentions. Ever since she had set foot on the Eastern island, Bird had made sure to keep a close watch on everything around her. The witch had called the loners to meet at the Great Pine for a meeting, and she had a feeling that she was a lot slower at traveling than some of her fellow loners. 'I just hope they are still there when I arrive. Hopefully, Ba'yagu won't be too angered,' she thought, picking up the pace slightly. Her legs ached from the journey over the mountains and through the plains. The training her father had put her through had helped with her endurance, but she couldn't help but be tired after all of that. A loud sigh escaped her, and her ears swiveled around as she thought she had caught the sound of someone nearby.

You could say it was colorless outside, dull, boring. The red hued mare dropped her green eyed gaze from the sky and fell back to pulling up tussocks of weeds. Birds chirped and clouds rolled overhead, causing patterns of pretty light to shine over the fields next to the pine. Sinclair, being curious, -and a bachelor lackey- was currently watching the rate at which loners passed through, so if need be someone had to know to plan a raid she could be a prized source of information. Alas, the flow of loners passing through was steadily dropping to just a trickle. Sinclair had seen around six in the recent days and no more. She was thoroughly disappointed with the horses, with so little coming there was no reason to report to Klaus or any of them. She sighed and looked across the fields to her stallion escort, seeing him glance up at her from time to time.
Her ears flattened and she whipped around, hearing a noise, close too. She stepped over the rise of the hills and looked straight into the eyes of a red roan. Sinclair backed up a step, she was right in front of the horse. What to do, call over the stallion to catch the small mare or hide her from the horrors. Her black mane swirled around her and her bright green eyes searched the mare, hoping a clear answer to her thought would be made known.

Bird looked up at the overcast sky with a sigh. She hated dreary days like this. It didn't help that her legs felt sore enough to fall off then and there. Birds chirped overhead as they fluttered through patches of tall grass. The roan mare hummed absentmindedly to their soft tune. The heat of someone's gaze on her pelt made her whirl around. The loner mare was eye to eye with a red mare. Her black mane swirled around her as her bright green eyes seemed to focus on her, silently telling her something. Bird glanced around, expecting there to be some sort of danger, but there didn't appear to be anyone around except the two of them.
She offered the other mare a soft smile before she spoke. "Hi. Is everything okay?" She asked. Her brown eyes filled with concern. Was this one of the mares that 'belonged' to the Bachelor herd? Surely if she were she wouldn't want anyone else to be captured by those brutes. Bird still found herself being wary. 'No one is to be trusted.' Her recently deceased father's words echoed in her head. Her mane flowed around her in the steady breeze, and her forelock fell onto her face, covering half of it.

"No, nothing is okay." The red mare spoke quietly, stepping back, away from the mare's sweet voice. Thoughts went through her head at the pace of a cheetah, she could motion her stallion over or could just leave the mare. The choice was... painful to make. She reared and a sharp cry split the meadow. The stallion, her escort, raised his head and began to make his way towards her. "I'm so sorry, but I would be punished for letting you go." Tears ran down the mare's face, having betrayed the stranger. Now, she could only hope the mare could run fast enough to get out of sight. Sinclair dropped down to all fours and backed away and then nodded her head towards the Great Pine in the distance, "Run!" Her green eyes flickered with fear upon saying the words. Hopefully her escort would never hear of those words and wouldn't take it upon himself to dole out punishment. Now if only the little roan would run. Her eyes pleaded with the mare and she stepped further away, wanting not to be a part of whatever was to happen.

Bird's ears flattened slightly as the other mare reared with a shrill whinny. At the steady sound of hooves thumping on the ground toward them, her muscles tightened as she turned and ran. Her heart hammered in her chest. Why had she done that? Her legs carried her over the plains and toward the Great Pine. It seemed so far away though. Her legs were exhausted, and she felt that she wasn't running as quickly as she normally would have been. The roan mare felt the hot breathe of the Bachelor stallion on her back legs as he bit them, trying to slow her down. Bird whinnied, kicking out with her back legs. Her hard hooves collided with the stallion's jaws, but it only seemed to make him angrier. The stallion grunted with effort as he caught up with her, slamming her with his broad body. Bird's breathe came in short pants as the stallion knocked the breathe out of her. He bit at her legs until she eventually tired out, falling to the ground.
He stood over her triumphantly. "Hello, little mare. You'll be a fine addition to the Bachelor herd," he chortled down to her. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked up at the x-scarred face of the horse above her. "No. I won't be," she said loud enough for the red mare to hear her. Bird kicked out, hitting him where his leg snapped to one side with a brutal crunch of bone. The Bachelor stallion yelled out in pain as he fell to the ground. Bird looked up the hill toward the other mare before she stood on shaky legs. Tears made streams down her face as she made her way back up the hill toward the other mare. "Come on! You can leave with me. He's down and out. He can't chase us," she said, glancing back over at the injured horse.

Sinclair watched in horror as the stallion sent her to the ground and then was further appalled when the mare snapped the stallion's leg with a well placed hoof. She gasped and backed away further. The roan was balling and Sinclair's tears had stopped falling. "I.. I.. I can't. If they ever find me again..." She trailed off, voice shaking. Then she took a step forward towards the older mare. Her heart fluttered with fear and curiosity with every step until she stood next to the mare. Waiting for a way to go, to leave. Hopefully the stallion wouldn't ever find her again. Or... Sinclair shied away from the thought and blinked it away from her memory.

Bird gave the mare a reassuring nod. "It's okay. This is your chance," she said as the other mare took a hesitant step toward her. "I'll protect you. That's what we Rangers do after all. My name is Little Bird by the way." The tears stopped streaming down her face as she heard the stallion behind her grunting with effort to stand only to fail over and over again. She snorted quietly at him, glaring at him to stay down or things would only get worse. It had surprised Bird that she had had the strength and mental security to even do something like that. Maybe with her father's death she was a bit more secure about actually fighting. There had been a time where she would have just laid there. That mare was certainly gone.

The mare's eyes danced with fear and she began to follow the mare. "I'm..." her voice broke off. In her own element wight he broodmares she was often more sassy, flirty, but her betrayal to the loner had shaken her up. She blinked slowly, long eye lashes catching the breeze. "Sorry." Her quiet voice was almost carried away by the wind and her green eyes appeared dull, broken, like her heart. She sighed and looked at the pretty roan, "A pretty name." The mare shifted in state, her mind wandering off. She began to hum quietly as they walked, farther and farther away from the homeland. She flicked her long black tail and heard it swish as it flew through the air. "I'm worried. So very worried." She spoke facing forward, as if speaking to no one. "Blood will be shed, lives lost, I feel it. Klaus is preparing for something. We all know it." She whispered into the wind, hoping her words would never find bachelor ears. She flicked her ear and began to stray away from the mare, towards the tree looming in the distance. And then she just knelt and hummed, dazed eyes full of shock and fright. "How did you find that courage?" She said speaking of the mare fighting the stallion. Much like, much like Ryder had.

Bird began walking. Her brown gaze stared down at the wounded Bachelor as he struggled and failed to stand. She turned her attention back to the mare at her side as she spoke. The wind caught at her voice almost making it where Bird couldn't hear her. "It's okay. I understand. You might have gotten in trouble if you hadn't," she said with a nod. The steady breeze slung her long mane across her neck and down her back. Her tail swished in the wind as she walked. "Thank you. What's yours?" She asked, tilting her head a bit in curiosity.
At the pretty, red mare's worried tone, Bird turned her head as they walked to watch her. There was so much pain and turmoil there that it hurt herself to even see. "There will be, but the herds are resilient. They'll find a way to survive. They always have." Her voice sounded sure even though she didn't personally know too much about herd life. She was a loner after all, but her father had taught her the ways of each herd: the lore of the Olde, the tactics of the Bachelors, and the persistence of the Exiles. They all had their perks, but there was one thing they had in common: the will to survive. Her ears perked forward at the mare's question. She shook her head slightly almost as if she still didn't believe that had happened. "I suppose I knew deep down what I had to do, and I just let my body react," she explained. Bird sat down beside the kneeling mare. "My father made me train day in and day out since I was born to be a Ranger, a protector of the herds and loners. I never thought I would be able to do it until.... he wasn't there anymore to protect me. I knew I had to learn to use the tools he had given me," she said, looking off toward the Great Pine which stood in the distance. "I guess I'm just doing what he would have wanted me to do."

"Not necessarily. Everything breaks eventually." She blinked and stood. "I have to, I have to go back." She said nervously stepping away from the mare. "I have to go help the stallion. If they find him dead... one of my friends might take the blame for me." She stepped away again and began to walk back along the path they'd taken. "Thank you though. I just won't have someone die on my conscience." Her ears drooped and she turned back to the mare, walked up slowly and nuzzled her before darting away, back to the Bachelor Herd. The only herd she knew.

Bird looked back at the mare in shock. "You're.... going to return?" She asked, tilting her head slightly. Her brows furrowed as she stood. Her legs were slightly shaky from all of the traveling and fighting she had done in the past few days. Bird watched in confusion as the reddish mare nuzzled her before trotting back to the monstrous herd she had almost escaped from. The roan mare dipped her head slightly. "You're very noble. I'll be sure to check on you, and I wish you luck," she called after the other horse. Bird waited for a few minutes until she was out of sight. She hadn't even gotten a chance to learn her name, but Bird couldn't help but hold a lot of respect for the other mare. She was sacrificing her freedom for the safety of her friends. The loner turned, walking toward the Great Pine that loomed in the distance. She wished she could be that way. Selfless and caring.
