Caught in the Riptide Private roleplay of fawnss's Robin and ghillietoes42's Guntram
The waiting was excruciating. At the edges of the battlefield, where the more passive members of the Olde Herd anxiously waited, fearing for their loved ones, it seemed all that could be done had been done. Prayers had been said, bandages and herbs had been gathered, and more than a few tears of worry had been shed. He had tried to do so much. Tried to comfort and motivate the fearful. Tried to gather and organize supplies. Tried to keep himself from thinking about the impending battle. But now it was here. What he had helped his dear friends, family, and companions to accomplish seemed so fragile and insignificant now. Now, as the beating of hooves and the wailed cries of the fighting and wounded echoed across the plains. Despite his years, experience, and knowledge, he was at a complete loss of what to do. He felt so small, so isolated. His warrior's heart, though jaded and weary of the fighting life, yearned to be with the fighters. He needed to defend those he cared about, and nothing more could be done from here. He pushed the thoughts back once again, forcing himself to walk among the gathered herd members, trying to find someone he could help. Spotting Obscura, he felt another wrench at his heart. The poor, poor mare, the tiara from her marriage still perched in her curls. He had kept a careful eye on her as they made this journey, hoping desperately that nothing would happen in this fight to break her spirit. While she was so frequently quiet, that eerie calm she carried with her, she seemed more vacant than usual - almost in a constant trance. He did not know the mare as well as he would like, but he knew his old friend Arturo, and that he cared deeply for those who deserved his attention. And that was enough for him to keep an eye on her himself. The sounds of the battle surged once again. Guntram flicked his ears toward the battlefield, as Obscura too looked up, concern welling up in the dark pools of her eyes. He wasn't certain if he had really heard the cries of Arturo among the fray, or if it was just his frayed nerves. But it didn't matter. Heavy hooves pounding the damp grass, uncaring of the cold rain lashing against his face, the old grullo surged toward the battlefield. He could not stand back any longer. He needed to defend his own. Whether he find his friend Arturo, his commander Vasska, or any of his other herdmates in need, he needed to be there to help them. He needed to get them back home safely.

The mare sighed as she surveyed the scene in front of her, her ears flicking back and forth as she listened to the cries of the horses below. It was a sickening sight to see, so many stallions and some mares ripping into each other. She could almost feel the searing pain of teeth tearing into her flesh. Robin shuddered at the thought, wishing she had her long mane to hide her vulnerable throat. Of course, she had cut it prior to the battle, knowing she would most likely trip over it when she was running to aid another horse. She stood with her head tall, despite the other Bachelor mares and allies having their heads low to shield them from the rain. Robin didn't mind, it was quite soothing on her coat. Although, it would make terrible conditions to run in. She glanced down at the horses below, nickering lowly at the disabilities the rain would bring. With so much grass and land in the fields, it was a danger zone for horses losing their feet and falling.
Robin glanced over the mass of bodies, searching out one individual. She nickered in surprise, blinking the rain from her eyes as she saw the silver coat of her mate. Ghost. His name echoed in her mind, having a sudden urge to cry out for him. She saw his opponent, the King of the Olde herd. Robin stepped forward, watching them engage in the battle. She worried for the Elite, praying that her thoughts for the stallion reached out to him.
The cries of horse below startled her out of her thoughts, her blue eyes wide as she searched the chaos for the source of the sound. She snorted as she couldn't locate it, although it came from somewhere inside the fray. She reared back slightly, taking off at a canter towards the battle. Using her skillful years of running from the other stallions, she swerved through Bachelors, Exiles, and Olde horses fighting, staying light on her hooves. The rain whipped her face, making her blink frantically to clear her vision so she didn't collide with another horse. The mare whinnied in panic as she collided into a dark figure, almost falling to the soaked ground. Shaking her head furiously, Robin glared up at the stallion she collided with, not recognizing him as one of the Exiles or Bachelors. He wasn't fighting with anyone, so he must be searching to aid another horse. Perhaps the one she heard.
The broodmare lay her ears back, scowling at the stallion. "If you're looking for a horse to help, stay out of my way." She snapped, turning and galloping towards the source of the cries.

Guntram braced his hooves into the soggy turf as he came to a hard stop, sliding a bit from the impact with the other horse. He didn't fall himself, but it did take him a moment to shake himself out of the surprise. As the mare he had collided with - a pretty buckskin splash, also not seeming to desire the aggression of the chaos around them - pushed herself to her feet and started toward the writing mass of the battle once again, he ducked his head in apology. "I'm sorry, miss. I wish we didn't have to meet on such a day as this."
As he too began to weave through the battlefield, he continued to catch glances of the mare he had encountered. She seemed to have narrowed in on someone - dodging around flying hooves and falling bodies as she continued on her way.
Pulling his gaze and curiosity away from the mare, his gaze was pulled by a familiar coat - the buckskin of Vasska, whirling in a mist of ice crystals and mud as he squared off with a dappled grey stallion who sported even more vicious scars than Guntram himself. Guntram held back briefly as he watched the sparring, not wanting to shame his king by jumping in if he was unneeded.
