The bachelor herd had been especially stressful since the arrival of the Exiles. It was hard to imagine what would become of them all after all of this, but the young brood didn't put too much thought to the topic. It would only strain her clear thinking and neutral demeanor, which are two very important qualities for not only surviving the day to day roughness of her position, but for the looming war. It was almost exciting; not that she wanted to risk the lives of the horses of her homelands but rather all this commotion was a perfect distraction for all of the bachelors. . .including the guards. Those lout, neanderthal beasts kept her from her early morning escapes and she would always hate them for that. But she soon realized she didn't have as much time for that as she had hoped for, and that was beyond disappointing.
Dusk was settling in among the bustling herd, and Elowen grazed quietly beside a few of the broods. She didn't speak to most of them often, but she quite enjoyed their company. In a herd bursting at the seams with testosterone driven barbarians, it was nice to feel the gentle warmth that radiated off of a mare. For the most part, they were predictable. . .no risk. Which, of course, was what the young mare loved.
Many new faces intrigued her, so she thought hard about most of them to help her figure out early who she should avoid. Though, now with both bachelors and exiles it was quite hard to reach everyone so she would have to be patient. It was an undisclosed trick she would use to lure in all sorts of attention. Good, bad, and everything in between. ELowen would walk among the herd, between massive bodies and chattering voices, waiting for anyone to strike up a conversation. Even a gesture or a look would do the trick. To her it was a game of cat and mouse, but in the end it might just save her hide.
Swallowing the last bit of clover and grass she had nibbled, Elowen raised her head to the herd. Things usually quieted down during the evening hours which was perfect time to play her 'game', so the mare slowly made her way to the others. She swallowed hard and arched her neck, trying to appear as the lady broods did. Sometimes she noticed she would gain more positive attention that way, perhaps because not every stallion knew her standing. But, that was okay. A positive encounter was a plus, no matter how she came to it.
She drifted about, much like a feather carried through the valley wind. Her eyes didn't leave the path of the earth she desired. Body tense and eyes hollow, she waiting for any alarm to add another check to her book.
