A role-play between Miles and RoninWho will be the victor? The sky was overcast as Cain announced the first phase of the war. They were to spar amongst each other, and the victors were to move on to face the Olde. Miles pinned his ears back as he glanced around, watching others find partners. He was small among the large horses of the Bachelors, and even though he had recently gained some self confidence, he realized his battle experiences were limited and only against the creatures of Chevalin. Sparring with a horse? Could he do that? A few minutes passed and soon the stragglers began noticing each other, finding partners then. Miles took another glance around and noticed the large stallion, Ronin, off to his right. Miles blinked and walked over, giving a slight dip of his head in greeting as he approached. "You haven't found a partner yet, have you?" he asked, suddenly aware at how tall Ronin was. He tried to think of a time where he had actually talked to Ronin and remembered that they had encountered each other when Klaus led part of the herd over the land bridge. Even though Ronin had similar ideals when it came to the mares, Miles remembered him being outspoken when they encountered the Olde. It was good to have that kind of confidence, and maybe Miles would learn a thing or two from him. Though, how was he supposed to even spar with someone almost twice his size? Miles suddenly wished he had trained his gift a little more...using his power would've given him an advantage...if there was water around. He'd definitely have to use his smaller stature to his advantage.

It could go without saying that despite his eagerness for war and battle, Ronin's mind was elsewhere at the present time. He scarcely heard the words of Cain, the call for spars and the promise that only the strongest of the bachelors would proceed to meet the Olde Herd in battle. It wasn't until, jarred from his thoughts by the words of another, did he realize that the bachelors were indeed pairing off to brawl and prove their abilities. He glanced around with an expression that appeared devil may care, however inside he struggled to find someone of value, someone worthy of a quick match. To his dismay, most had partnered off and were beginning their bouts. Ronin's ears fell flat and his expression grew sour.
At last, he turned his gaze upon the smaller stallion who had spoken before, he knew him from occasional encounters with the most notable being during Klaus's reign. The land bridge, if he remembered correctly. A disgruntled sigh heaved from his form, but what was he to do? His own inattention had caused this and he couldn't, no, shouldn't pout about it. "No... I haven't." He offered in reply, his tone grumpy to say the very least. "And I suppose neither have you..."
Ronin shifted slightly, heavy hooves shifting his pale body around to face the smaller lad. His face and body still bore semifresh wounds, remnants of a nasty brawl that had occurred not long before this call for war. The stallion swung his head slowly, compensating for a new blindness on his left side. Ghost had destroyed his eye, leaving an empty socket that had yet to heal entirely, and this was his biggest disadvantage. "Shall we then?"

As Miles waited intently for the taller stallion to answer, he couldn't help but notice the fresh wounds on Ronin's body, and newly missing eye. His mind raced with simple strategies as Ronin replied, his voice grumpier than Miles expected it to be. He could always leap to that side, maybe catch Ronin off guard, but Ronin would see him coming anyways since they were now facing each other. He would have to somehow trick Ronin into getting confused about his whereabouts which would give Miles the opening he would need. He tried to keep his expression neutral as he replied to the pale stallion. "No, I wasn't able to find someone, but then I noticed that you were alone...I hope you don't mind." Miles gave Ronin a quick smile before taking a few steps back, since the pale stallion was now facing him. Miles intended to do his best to impress Cain, as well as not harm Ronin too badly.
'Shall we then?" Ronin asked, and Miles nodded in reply. A look of determination crossed over his face as his mind went to work again. It seemed like he was given the first move, and he didn't want to use Ronin's huge disadvantage first, because it was probably the most obvious thing to do. Instead, he lowered his head and spread his legs, steadying himself, going on the defensive instead. He had speed, and he was going to use it to his advantage.

For a moment Ronin did nothing, said nothing, simply watched as the other stallion braced himself for the brawl to come. It was all in fun, he supposed, since major wounds wouldn’t do well for war time and yet... wouldn’t that ensure that one was selected to go on to meet the Olde? If your opponent couldn’t rightly stand in battle, what other choice would there be? He shook his head, he had been dishonorable during his fight with Ghost and he’d promised himself that such would never happen again despite how tempting it may be. For now, Ronin contented himself with waiting for Miles to move, his stance adopting that of the defensive as well. While for the most part he stood balanced, his neck was flexed in such a way that made seeing the stallion before him easy. He only had the one eye left and he hadn’t quite gotten used to the blindness that plague his left side, so it could go without saying that he was perhaps overcompensating.
“Your go, shortstuff.” He drawled out finally, figuring there was no use in blindly chasing the smaller, more agile lad. While he was loath to admit it, he’d learned a thing or two from Ghost, mostly in regards to not blindly rushing into situations where one was at a disadvantage. Sure, Ronin had size and muscle on Miles, but Ronin’s stamina and speed were lacking and that could mean all the difference. He’d have to wait for Miles to get close and hope to get lucky in that aspect, because chasing him down probably wouldn’t end well.

As Ronin dropped into a similar defensive stance, Miles wasn't sure what he should do. They couldn't just stand off and stare at one another the whole time, what would be the point in that? The pale stallion spoke, telling him it was his go and letting the opportunity of having the first attack pass. A look of determination crossed Miles' face as he pinned his ears back. If Ronin wanted him to go first, so be it. The blue roan shot forward, kicking off with all of his strength. He dropped his head, to help him pick up speed, as he charged towards Ronin. As he got closer, he looked for opportunity. Ronin could clearly still see him, and he had moved his head so that he could keep Miles in his range of vision, so trying to get to his blind side was a little harder now. Miles determined he would have to attack head on and wait for a chance to hide in the blind spot. A few feet away, Miles suddenly dug his heels into the dirt, dust flying up around him as the blue roan suddenly reared up and leapt off to Ronin's right, running past him. As he moved past, he aimed a quick buck at Ronin's shoulder, and quickly turned around once he was behind the larger stallion, his ears perked with anticipation.
