Araphine watched, wide-eyed and frozen, as the Oracle, too, fell into the water. She inhaled and held her breath for a moment before realizing that Eiru was safe, chest-deep in the icy water. She was quick to respond to the Oracle's calls, and she hurried to the water's edge, where she faltered. She stared down at the icy blackness, lapping at her hooves almost threateningly. The spotted mare inhaled deeply and plunged into the water after Eiru, glad that she'd taken a deep breath - the sheer coldness of the water knocked the breath out of her.
She picked her way carefully over to the Oracle, making sure not to get swept away by a wayward current. The waves slapped against her chest, and she could feel her teeth beginning to chatter. She stood next to Eiru, eyes squinted against the wind and icy water as she watched Ganymede and Synnove slowly make their way to the shore. Unless something went horribly, horribly wrong, they were going to make it! She took a few tentative steps forward as they came closer and closer, but was careful not to go too far; she could feel the water tugging at her legs, promising death if she were to get swept away, too.
"Unicorns, help them!" She whispered under her breath, her teeth chattering violently. She yearned to be back in the City, wrapped in a blanket or standing in front of a fire.
At least the bridge is broken, she thought, glancing up at the shattered remains of the ice bridge. They had succeeded, for the most part. Once Synnove and Ganymede were safe, they could go home and rest easy.

Eiru could stand her idleness no longer. With a strangled cry, she plunged forward the last few crucial feet and took a hank of Synnove's mane between her chattering teeth. Forgive me, she thought, wincing at the audacity of her actions. It was terribly uncouth to grab a lady by her mane, but in this instance it was absolutely necessary. The Oracle was was confidant that the knight would forgive her - certainly Synnove would miss her life more than a few hairs.
As the last solid pieces of the bridge crumbled, Eiru could not pause to appreciate the fruits of labor. Instead she preoccupied herself with digging her hooves into the soft, shifting sands, backing up with Synnove's mane in her mouth, tugging the knight inch by painful inch towards the shore. She knew Araphine would join the effort. All three of these mares had strong character. It was why the unicorns had selected them, and it would be the strength of their wills and the goodness of their hearts that allowed them to survive.
The Oracle's back hooves left the water, and her front soon followed. Ganymede and Synnove were not entirely free of the water, but here in the shallows they were in no immediate danger of drowning. With that peace of mind, Eiru's legs gave in, and the mare collapsed.
Beyond them, the black ocean stretched uninterrupted into the distance, only the odd floe evidence that a land bridge had ever existed.

Ganymede's eyebrows knitted together as she felt a sharp tug on her mane. Why was she swimming almost diagonally? Her legs did not seem like they would be causing her to swim like that. When she tried to right herself, it merely led to more tugging, and then she sensed the presence next to her. Was she drowning? Had the unicorns come to take her? Or maybe it was some oceanic predator that took advantage of her struggles.
Turning her head sharply, she saw a flash of light grey dapples. With a spark of recognition, Ganymede understood what was happening. She also felt like an absolute idiot for thinking anything else. Of course Synnove would have rescued her. A Knight would never let one of their own die if they could help it. Even if it risked their own life in the process. Ganymede was a bit surprised that the mare could manage to hold her above the water while still swimming. A irredeemable debt would be settled today, and no matter what the grulla mare did, she would never feel that the debt would be repaid.
With a start, the young mare felt her ankle hit solid ground. There was a flurry of water, and Ganymede could hear labored breathing. Whose it was, she would never know. Most likely a combination of them all. The tugging on her mane loosened, only to be replaced by another. Warmer bodies were pressed against her as she struggled through the freezing surf. The shifting sands also made it hard for her to stand, and she fell over a few times. Once she no longer felt the waves against her quivering legs, she collapsed onto the earth, tremors taking over. They had made it. The ice bridge was destroyed, remnants of the structure washing ashore, as well as drifting further into the sea. They were all alive, at least for now, and they suffered minimal injuries.
They had succeeded.

[Synnove | Knight]
Someone was tugging her by the mane. Blurred eyes caught the pale coat, and the Knight nodded inwardly. Ah, the Oracle. She let Ganymede's mane go and let her own head dip, neck muscles singing with small cramps earned from keeping the grulla's head above water. One more step, one more step...one more and you can sleep...forever. She sluggishly acknowledged when Ganymede stumbled but knew that, if the mare went down, she would not be able to catch her. There was no more rescue left in the grey mare's body; all reserves were tapped out.
The Oracle's soft, low-spoken words of encouragement were barely distinct to Synnove's ears, but the mare's comforting tone spurred the Knight on towards the shore. An age passed until muddy, waterlogged ground gave way to soft, dry sand. Synnove's left-front hoof sunk fetlock-deep into the sand, and something inside of her sighed with relief.
And, with a tremble of exhaustion, all four legs folded up under her.
In years to come, Synnove would recall with either embarrassment or pride this final, ungraceful collapse, but, for now, she snorted the sand from her nostrils. Her vision swimming, the Knight turned her head to count the mares around her and make sure they were safe. Ganymede, as exhausted as she was, had collapse not far from the grey mare's side. Araphine was nearby, although Synnove could not tell what she was doing, and the Oracle was also nearby doing...something.
And, the bridge was gone. It seemed silly to repeat it, but, with each refrain, it became more of a reality: The bridge is gone! We survived!
What would this mean in the long run, the Knight did not know. Strategically, it would force their enemies to either brave the icy waters, exhausting themselves as she had done or go around to another crossing that would take them suns to reach, and, Unicorns willing, suns to cross because of heavy resistance. Of course, even as bubbles of enervation burst in her brain, sinking her further into torpidity, she realized that she and her comrades would still have to face The King.
Mentally, Synnove laughed at the thought that they'd done all this only to get punished or, worse, exiled, and, as her eyes closed and her head lowered to her front legs, she decided...it was...worth it. [Word Count: 397] Total Posts: 8 (+3 Tier)
